Turner, Mary Wells
EMERALD ISLE - Mary Wells Turner, 76, of Emerald isle died August 12, 2000 at Craven Regional Medical Center after a long and gallant battle against cancer. Mrs. Turner was born on may 17, 1924 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Russell D. and Clarice Anderson Wells. She attended Wyncroft Academy and was a graduate of Syracuse University. In the 1960s she was President of the Roanoke Valley Republican Women's Club and Campaign Secretary to Linwood Holton in his successful run for Governor of Virginia. The Turners resided in Concord from 1983-1992.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Emerald Isle Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Finch officiating.

Preceded n death by her daughter, Linda Turner Sonner and brother David A. wells; she is survived by her husband, James W. Turner MacPhail of Winnetka, Illinois and Jamie Turner Bure of Oakton, Virginia; sons-in-law, Brian Sonner, Andrew MacPhail and Thomas Burke; and grandchildren John P. Sonner, J. Colin Sonner, W. Reed MacPhail, Drew H. MacPhail, T. Owen Burke, Caitlin W. BUrke and Mary E. Burke as well as a sister, Barbara W. Taylor of White Stone, Virginia.

She was an avid bridge player and a tennis enthusiast and belonged to several local clubs and groups.

Taylor, Earl Cleveland
FOREST CITY - Mr. Earl Cleveland Taylor, 86, died Saturday, August 14, 2000. Funeral is 11 a.m. Monday, August 14, 2000 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Visitation is 4-6 tonight at Harrelson Funeral Home.

Hester, Ruth Seigle
GASTONIA - Ruth Seigle Hester, 86, of 326 Queens Ct., died August 10, 2000. Funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday at Greene funeral service, Southside Chapel. The Rev. Leonard Johnson is officiating. Burial will be in Olney Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Seattle, Washington and a homemaker.

Pallbearers will be Greg Carter, Noel Heffner, Johnny Pennington, John Reid, Jimmy Sisk and Stacy Thomas; honorary pallbearer will be Jeff McGee.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Henry and Otta Jones Seigle, husband, Charles G. Hester, son, Charles `Bucky' Hester, and brothers, Cecil, Carl, John and Earl Seigle.

She is survived by her son, Buster Hester, Gastonia, NC; daughter, Janice H. O'Neal, Gastonia; sisters, Ruby German, Lenoir, NC; Addie Seigle and Bobbie Seigle, Lawrenceville, GA; grandchildren, Doris Gragg, Mandy Nievens, Nicky Hester, Clover, SC, Cathy McGee, York, SC, Mitchell O'Neal, and Chuck Hester, Gastonia, Michelle Taylor, Asheville, NC; and eight great grandchildren.

Petro, Rosemary
GASTONIA - Mrs. Rosemary Petro, 75, of Covenant Village, died August 11, 2000. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home Portland, Indiana. Carothers Funeral Home Gastonia is in charge of local arrangements.

Willis, George Gravatt
GASTONIA - Mr. George Gravatt Willis, Jr., 83, of 509 West Eighth Ave. died Friday August 11, 2000 at Gaston memorial Hospital.

Mr. Willis a native of Gaston County, was the husband of the late Helen Turner Willis, son of the late George G., Sr., and Eliza Lindsay Willis, and father of the late Elizabeth Zealy Willis. He was a retired claims adjuster from Provident Life Insurance Co., a member of First ARP Church of Gastonia where he was a Deacon Emeritus, a WWII Army Veteran serving in the 36th Infantry Division and enjoyed playing tennis.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, George G. III and Jo Ella Willis of Myrtle Beach, daughter, Nancy Merrill Willis of Gastonia; sisters, Margaret E. `Betty' Willis and Nancy Willis Massey of Gastonia; grandchildren, Lisa M. Willis of Columbia, SC, George G. Willis IV of Myrtle Beach; 2 great grandchildren; special friend, Theoria Page of Gastonia.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 14, 2000 at First ARP Church of Gastonia, The Rev. Eddie Spencer and the Dr. Harry Schutte officiating.

Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service in the church fellowship hall and at other times at the family residence 509 West Eight Ave., Gastonia. Burial will be at Gaston Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to First ARP Church 316 S. Chester St. Gastonia NC, 28052.

Wilson, Candice Nikole
GASTONIA - Candice Nikole Wilson, infant, of 115 East Fourth Ave. Apartment A, died Friday, August 11, 2000. She was born in Gaston County, NC on February 2, 2000 to Ernest S. Wilson and Tammy Bingham.

Visitation will be between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. Sunday at Greene funeral service, Southside Chapel. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Greene funeral service, Southside Chapel. The Rev. James Setzer, Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Westview Gardens, Bessemer City, NC.

She was preceded in death by her maternal great grandfather, the late Charles Bingham, she is survived by her mother, Tammy Bingham, father, Ernest S. Wilson, paternal grandparents, Audrey Jean and Mike Wilson, maternal grandparents, Candy and Monti Glenn, maternal great grandparents, Frank and Barbara Ogle, sister, Dehamma Wilson of the home, great aunt, Ann Benge; 3 aunts and 1 uncle.?

Perry, Charles David
INDIAN TRAIL - Mr. Charles David Perry, 46, of Indian Trail died Wednesday, August 9th in Shreveport, LA. funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2000 at Heritage Funeral Home in Indian Trail with interment following at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews. Visitation will be 6:00-9:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 15th at Heritage Funeral Home. Mr. Perry will lie in state one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Mr. Perry was born January 19, 1954 in Floyd County, Kentucky to Sam and Opal Perry. He grew up in Kentucky and Ohio before joining the US Marines. David was an independent truck driver. He was a member of the VFW Auxiliary No. 4309 in Brevard, NC. A `jack of all trades, ' David will be greatly missed by friends and family.

In addition to his parents, Sam and Opal of Norwalk, OH, David is survived by his wife, Linda Fazekas Perry of Indian Trail; his children, David Perry Ward, Daniel Perry Ward and Michelle Perry Ward of Ohio; his brothers, Gary Perry and Jerry Perry of Norwalk, OH and Larry Perry of Syracuse, Indiana; his sisters, Linda Daniel of Charlotte, Wanda Kessler of Gaffney, SC, Donna Kilgore of Norwalk, OH and Ruth Myers of Sandusky, OH; and one grandchild. David was preceded in death by his brother Roy and sister Mary Beth.

Memorials may be made to Deliverance Tabernacle, New London, OH 44851.

KANNAPOLIS - Leola Eggers Miller, 75, died August 11, 2000. Graveside service is 11 a.m. Monday, August 14 at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 4-5:30 tonight at Pendry's Funeral Home.

Nelson, Margaret Ann Brittain
LAKE LURE - Margaret Ann Brittain Nelson, 95, died Saturday, August 12, 2000. Funeral is 2 p.. Tuesday at Cane Creek Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-8 p.m. Monday at Crowe's Funeral Home.

Mahaffey, Philip E.
LANCASTER - Mr. Philip E. Mahaffey, 42, of 1726 Dogwood Lane, Lancaster, died Friday, August 11, 2000 in Duke Medical Center, Durham, NC. Born in Lancaster County, he was a son of Mary Jo Gilreath Mahaffey and the late Marion E. Mahaffey. He was a retired Liberty Life Insurance Agent and a member of Second Baptist Church. Mr. Mahaffey was a member of the NLCAA All American Basketball Team and had Played Basketball for the USC-L and Erskine Colleges, coached Dixie youth Baseball for 7 years and also coached recreation basketball for 8 years.

Mr. Mahaffey is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ronda Gainer Mahaffey of Lancaster; 1 son, Bobby Mahaffey; 1 daughter, Miss Amanda Mahaffey; his mother, Mrs. Mary Jo Mahaffey of Lancaster and a brother, Martin M. Mahaffey of Lancaster.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Covenant Baptist Church by Dr. Hubert Weslch, the Rev. Jimmy Fore and the Rev. Larry Pressley. All former basketball and baseball players of Coach Mahaffey will serve as honorary pallbearers. Active pallbearers will be Bobby Landers, Tim Boling, Buck Rollings, Steve Frank, Adam Chittam and Jay Horne.

The family will receive friends at Mahaffey Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening.

Memorials may be made to Covenant Baptist Church, 165 Craig Manor Rd., Lancaster, SC 29720 or to American Lung Association.
