Atwater, Helen Justice
Helen Justice Atwater, 82, of Charlotte and formerly of West Palm Beach, FL, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at Wesley Nursing Center after a long illness.
A memorial service will be held 11 am Thursday, May 3, 2001 at McEwen Pineville Chapel, with The Reverend Robert Williard officiating.
Born August 8, 1918 in Wingate, NC, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Justice Austin and Virginia Pearl Heafner Austin. She was married 53 years to the late Col. A.S. (Jack) Atwater, and enjoyed her role of a military wife, living and entertaining all over the world. Mrs. Atwater was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, and her sister, Magaret Austin Helms.
She is survived by her nieces, Dawn Courtney and Gail Phaup and her nephews, Julian Helms, Bryan Helms and Michael Helms, all of Charlotte, George Helms of Bloomfield Hills, MI, and The Reverend David Helms of Southern Pines, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 500 E. Morehead St., Suite 211, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Walcott, Ivan Leroy
Ivan Leroy Walcott, 88, of Huntersville, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at Huntersville Oaks. Son of the late Arthur Walcott and Ruby Monroe Walcott, he was born June 3, 1912 in Comstock, Michigan.
Survivors include sons, Jerold Ivan Walcott of Kentwood, Michigan, Wayne Arthur Walcott of Davidson, and Randal Martin Walcott of Bellingham, Washington; sister, Inez Carpenter of Marne, Michigan; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
There will be no service at this time.

Schroeder, Robert Charles
Robert Charles Schroeder, age 77, a resident of Charlotte, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at the Stewart Health Care Center. He was born October 30, 1923 in Alexandria, Minnesota, the son of the late Ernest and Emma Rodberg Schroeder.
Following a private inurnment at the church columbarium, a Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Thursday, May 3, at Carmel Presbyterian Church Sanctuary, 2048 Carmel Road, with Phillip Hargrove officiating. The Schroeder family will receive friends immediately following the service at 3600 Cypress Club Drive, Villa B., Charlotte, in the first floor parlor.
Mr. Schroeder was a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in chemical engineering. He had served in the US Army during WWII as a Second Lieutenant in the Chemical Mortar Battalion. Before retiring in 1986, Robert was the President of Celanese Fibers Operations of Charlotte and Corporate Vice President.
Bob served as a director of both the Greater Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and Wachovia Bank & Trust Company's Southern Regional Board. He also sat on the Board of Directors of North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry and served as a member of the Governor's Business Committee for Mathematics and Science Education. Mr. Schroeder was on the Board of Visitors of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte and served on the Board of Directors of the Business Foundation of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and of the University North Carolina at Charlotte Foundation. While on the Board of Directors for the University of North Carolina, Inc., he established the Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Schroeder Scholarship Endowment Fund for students majoring in an engineering discipline, math, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or related areas. Bob was also involved with the Boy Scouts of America.
An avid hunter, golfer, freshwater fisherman and bridge player, Bob enjoyed many years as a member at Quail Hollow Country Club and Carmel Country Club. He was also on the Board of Directors and a life member of the Tower Club of Charlotte.
Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Bjorklund Schroeder; his daughter Nancy Schroeder Tarring and her husband, Bob Tarring and step-grandson Brent Tarring of Towson, Maryland, daughter Susan Schroeder of Charlotte and grandson Adam Robert Tyler of Farmington Hills, Mi, son Mark Robert Schroeder and his wife, Penny Schroeder, granddaughters, Sarah Schroeder and Kimberly Schroeder of Trumbull, Ct., and son Scott Ernest Schroeder and his wife, Aleta Schroeder of Winston-Salem, NC. Also surviving is his brother Richard Schroeder and his wife, Sharon Schroeder of Fargo, ND.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Association of Mecklenburg County, 1401 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204, or the Hospice of Charlotte, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.

Freeman, John L.
BENNETTSVILLE -- Mr. John L. Freeman, Sr., died Sunday, April 29, 2001 at his home. Born in Marlboro County, he was the son of the late James E. and Sallie Mae Sanders Freeman. He was retired from J.P. Stevens Delta Plant in Wallace after 38 years of service. He attended Bennettsville Church of God prior to becoming homebound due to an illness. He was a past president of the YPE in the statewide Church of God. He was a loving husband and father.
He is survived by his wife, Helen H. Freeman of the home; daughters, Linda Chavis of Loris, SC, Agnes Sturdivant of East Laurinburg, NC, Bobbie Jean Davis of Hope Mills, NC, and Ms. Sandra Patterson of Bennettsville, SC; brothers, Leon Freeman of Lynwood, CA, and Henry Freeman of McColl, SC; sisters, Sallie Mae Sanderson of Detroit, MI, and Rosie Sanders of Bennettsville, SC; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, John L. Freeman, Jr.
Services will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at 4:00 pm at the Bennettsville Church of God with interment in Sunset Memorial Park in Bennettsville.

Mrs. Barbara Ann Griffin, 39, died April 27, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.
Funeral is 2 pm Thursday at King's Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in the Macedonia Cemetery in Midland. The family will receive friends starting at 1 pm for one hour prior to the service at King's Funeral Home.
Mrs. Griffin is survived by her parents, Mrs. Beverly Polk and Mr. Bennie Davis; eight sisters, Laura Holmes, Teresa Ann Ervin, Yvonne Polk, Charlene Burrough, Tawana Burrough, Alkena Harris, Tiffany Love and Pamela Brown, all of Charlotte; three brothers, Samuel Polk, Anthony Burrough and Bennie Ray Harris, Jr., all of Charlotte; her beloved fiance, James Marian Ervin of Charlotte; and a host of aunts, uncles, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Walter Edward Blanton, age 92, of Charlotte, died Monday, May 1, 2001 at his residence. Mr. Blanton was born April 26, 1909 in Dallas, NC son of the late Joseph Edward Blanton and Mary Lucinda Blanton.
A graveside service will be 3:30 PM Friday May 4, 2001 at Sharon Memorial Park officiated by The Reverend Gary Hudson.
Survivors include two daughters, Dora Cadenhead and her husband Robert, of Wilmington, NC; Nora Muroe and her husband Tony, of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Ricky McManus of West Poland, Maine, Mike Cadenhead and his wife Pam, of Denver, NC, Eddie Cadenhead and his wife Trena, of Charlotte, Sarah Hill and her husband, David, of Shelby, NC; five great-grandchildren, Kati Cadenhead, Jesse Cadenhead, Emma Cadenhead, Scott Cadenhead, Erin Hough, Breanna McManus, and Alicia McManus.
Mr. Blanton was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah P. Blanton.

McManus, Willie Mae
LANCASTER -- Mrs. Willie Mae McManus McManus, 76, of 6673 Taxahaw Road, died Tuesday afternoon, May 1, 2001 at Springs Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 7, 1924 in Lancaster County, the daughter of the late Mr. Aaron McManus and Mrs. Viola Hinson McManus and was the wife of Mr. Hawley McManus. Mrs. McManus was a homemaker and a member of Taxahaw Baptist Church.
Mrs. McManus is survived by her husband, Mr. Hawley McManus of the home; one son, Dr. Donald McManus of Concord, NC; four daughters, Mrs. Matrell Taylor and her husband Tommy, Mrs. Margaret Henry and her husband Glenn, Mrs. Dorothy Boone and her husband Wayne, and Ms. Dianne McManus all of Lancaster; one brother, Mr. George Mason McManus of Florida; two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Owens and her husband Dr. Harold Owens of Lancaster, and Mrs. Ann Ivey of Greer, SC; as well as eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
The funeral service for Mrs. McManus will be 4 pm Friday afternoon, May 4, 2001 at Taxahaw Baptist Church by Reverend Rodney Nicholson and Reverend Della Sparks. Burial will follow in the Taxahaw Baptist Church Massey Cemetery.
The family of Mrs. McManus will receive friends from 6-8 pm this evening, May 3, 2001 at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC, and suggest memorial contributions to Taxahaw Baptist Church, c/o Mr. Larry Robertson, 1876 Overbrook Road, Kershaw, SC 29067.
