BADIN -- Mr. Harry Gene `Red` Cole, 53, died Thursday, May 17, 2001. Funeral and burial were Tuesday. Kelsey Funeral Home of Albemarle served the family.

Phillips, Charles Alan

HICKORY -- Mr. Charles Alan Phillips, 53, died May 22, 2001. Funeral is 9 AM Friday, Longview Church of God, interment in the V. A. Cemetery in Black Mountain. Visitation 7-8:30 PM tonight, Bass-Smith Funeral Home, Hickory.

Tillman, Viola Little

ALBEMARLE -- Mrs. Viola Little Tillman, 87, died Sunday, May 20, 2001. Funeral Thursday, Greater Mt. Zion Ministry; burial in church cemetery. Visitation at the church 30 minutes prior to service. Kelsey Funeral Home is entrusted with plans.

Lockey, Caleb Paul

Caleb Paul Lockey, III, 78, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at the Brian Center. Funeral is 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2001 at McEwen funeral service, Charlotte Chapel. Interment will be in Forest Lawn East Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.

Mr. Lockey was born in Charlotte, May 4, 1923, a son of the late Caleb Paul Lockey, Jr. and Adele Kirby Lockey. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corps as a military policeman, was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church and was a retired tile setter.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Alice Leonard Lockey of Charlotte; son, Paul Lockey, IV, of Charlotte; daughters, Donna Roxanne Lockey of Atlanta, Ga. and Rebecca Kooyman of Charlotte; four grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and sisters Ida Helms of Charlotte and Mary McLemore of Long Beach, NC.

Arrangements by McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Charlotte Chapel.

Cotten, Essie Goodwin

APEX -- Essie Goodwin Cotten, 99, resident of the Rex Nursing Center in Apex, former longtime Church Street resident in Morrisville, died Monday morning at home.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 24, at 2 pm in the First Baptist Church of Morrisville. Reverend O. T. Hooks and Reverend Myron Yandle will officiate. Burial will be in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Highway 70 in Raleigh.

Mrs. Cotten was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Cotten, and two daughters, Celestine C. Nutt and Dorothy C. Leffler. She is survived by two daughters, Dixie C. Reitano and her husband Joe of Memphis, TN, and Betty C. Hardee and her husband Wayne of Cary; a special niece, Emma H. Johnson and husband Raymond of Morrisville; sisters, Hilda G. Womble of New Hill and Magdalene G. Briggs of Gastonia; and a brother, Lewis Goodwin of Aiken, SC. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 pm this evening, May 23, at the Apex Funeral Home, 511 W. Williams Street (Hwy. 55) in Apex, and other times at the home of Betty and Wayne Hardee, 101 Windward Court, Cary.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Morrisville's Building Fund, 209 Church Street, Morrisville, NC 27560.

Apex Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mills, Jimmie

PAGELAND -- Mr. Jimmie Mills, 75, died Monday, May 21, 2001.

funeral service is 4 pm Thursday at Providence Baptist Church in Pageland, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm Wednesday at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home in Chesterfield.

Mr. Mills was born in Pageland, SC, a son of Mae Hendrix Mills of Pageland and the late Townley Thomas Mills. He was a retired employee of Springs Industries, a U.S. Veteran of World War II, and a member of Providence Baptist Church. Mr. Mills was preceded in death by a brother, Harold T. Mills.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Mills is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Laney Mills of the home; two sons, Joseph M. Coles of Atlanta, GA, and Johnie E. Coles of Asheland City, TN; two daughters, Jackie M. Griffin and Judy Mills, both of Pageland, SC; one sister, Dorothy Evans of Augusta, GA; and five grandchildren, Sherrie Banovatz, Angela Griffin, Jonathan Coles, Jennifer Maples and Kimberly Griffin.

Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home is serving the Mills family.

Young, George C.

MONROE -- Mr. George C. Young, Jr., 78, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at Hospice of Union County. He was born in Union County, N.C., on March 9, 1923, son of the late George C. and Pearl Curlee Young. Mr. Young was an active Boy Scout leader, where he was the recipient of the Eagle Scout and Arrowhead Honor. He was retired from the N.C. Agriculture Extension Service.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 AM in the St. Lukes Lutheran Church conducted by Pastor Kenneth Fink. Burial will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Griffin Young; sons, George C. Young, III of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Bill Young of Monroe; daughters, Cindy Cox of Front Royal, Virginia, Susan Steele of Easley, SC, and Betty Ann Thompson of Monroe; and 6 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7:00 - 8:30 at Gordon funeral service.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Union County, 700 West Roosevelt Boulevard, Monroe, NC 28110 or St. Lukes Lutheran Church, 909 Circle Drive, Monroe, NC 28112.

Alexander, Ms. Edna

MONROE -- Ms. Edna Alexander, 49, died May 20, 2001. Funeral is 3 PM Friday at the Grier Funeral Chapel, interment in Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation is 11 AM until 7 PM Thursday at Grier Funeral Chapel of Monroe.

Williams, Walter Glenn `Pete`

LEXINGTON -- Walter Glenn `Pete` Williams, 66, died Monday, May 21, 2001. Funeral 2pm Wednesday, Davidson Funeral Home; burial Forest Hill Memorial Park with military rites. Visitation was Tuesday at the funeral home.

Lawrence, Alex

Mr. Alex Lawrence, of 1601 Whisnant Avenue, departed this life on Tuesday, May 22, 2001. He was born in Mecklenburg County to the late Fred and Beulah Lawrence. He attended Plato Price High School and York Road High School, and was employed with the City of Charlotte.

At an early age, he joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Matthews, NC where he served as a Deacon, and was President of the Usher Board until his health declined. He was a member of Solomon Lodge #257 of the Modern Free Masonic Order.

He was preceded in death by his son, Maurice Beacham. He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife, Joretta, and his son, Alex L. Lawrence; three grandchildren, Daisy Crowder, Emerald Lawrence and Alexis Lawrence; his mother, Beulah Lawrence; three sisters, Elizabeth Murphy, Millie McDowell and Belvatine Gray; five brothers, John Lawrence, Richard Lawrence, Angelo Lawrence, Johnny McCLain and Thomas Jerry McClain, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM on Saturday, May 26th in the Family Mortuary Chapel, 2310 Statesville Avenue. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM on Friday, May 25th at Family Mortuary Chapel.

Roseman, Fred Sylvester

SALISBURY -- Mr. Fred Sylvester Roseman, Jr., 79, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001. Funeral 2pm Thursday, Summersett Memorial Chapel; burial at City Memorial Park. Visitation 1-2pm Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Bullard, Frances Rhodes

ARDEN -- Frances Rhodes Bullard, daughter of the late Will and Minnie Duckey Rhodes, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001.

Frances was a retired teacher and media specialist of North Carolina Schools. She graduated from Asheville Normal and Teachers' College and Winthrop College. Frances was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church where she participated as a choir member and pianist. She was a member of the North Carolina Writers Network and Charlotte Writers' Club, the Tuesday Group, the Oakdale Book Club, the Pleasant Years Club, the Joy Sunday School Class and the Women of the Church. Frances was a charter member of the Manorhouse of Gastonia.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Shelby O. Bullard, Sr., and brothers, James, Bill, Woodfin, Raymond and Bruce Rhodes. She is survived by a son, Shelby O. Bullard, Jr. and wife Mary Jo Bullard, grandson Kenneth Bullard and wife Lori and daughter Kailee, granddaughter Tina Dunn and great grandchildren Joshua and Amanda, and great, great grandchildren Alexis and Makayla, brothers Vernon and Max Rhodes and sisters Louise Gregory, Margaret Brown and Jean Carter.

The family will receive friends Friday, May 25, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church prior to the funeral service at 11:30. A private interment service will be held at Sharon Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Avery's Creek United Methodist Church in Arden, NC, or to the Rhodes Scholarship Fund at J.C. Roberson High School at Skyland, NC.

Dunmire, James Allen

James Allen Dunmire, 77, of Charlotte died May 23, 2001 at the Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital.

He was a native of Youngstown, Ohio and was son of the late Allen Lee & Margaret Langford Dunmire.

He was a Retired Vice President of Marketing and an Army Veteran of WW II where he received two Bronze Stars and a combat infantry badge.

He is survived by his wife Martha Krempels Dunmire; son, James B. Dunmire; 5 daughters, Linda Walters of Hamstead, NC, Patricia Cox of Mt. Holly, Robin Millerstrom of Lincolnton, Sheila Abernethy of Holden Beach and Sherri O'dell of Kings Mountain; brother, Richard Dunmire; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be conducted by the Rev. Ralph Ellis at 11 a.m. Saturday at Carothers Funeral Home, 226 S. Main St., Mt. Holly. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral.

In Lieu of flowers Memorial Condolences to the Presbyterian Hospital Foundation to benefit Harris Hospice Unit, PO Box 33549, Charlotte, NC 28233.

Carothers Funeral Home in Mt. Holly is serving the family.

Creson, Tommy Frank

UNION MILLS -- Mr. Tommy Frank Creson, 55, died May 26, 2001. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Garden Creek Baptist CHurch. Visitation is 6-9 p.m. Sunday at Westmoreland Funeral Home.

Dozier, Cleo Sparks

MOORESVILLE -- Cleo Sparks Dozier, 88, died May 25, 2001. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Glenwood Memorial Park. The Rev. Phil DeBerry, Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be after the service.

She was a retired secretary and was last employed by Rock Hill Finishing. Her husband James Livingston Dozier died in 1990.

Survivors are son, James Dozier Jr. and wife Maryinda of Bishopville, SC; daughter, Gail Geddings and husband Warren of Charlotte; granddaughters, Traci Dozier of Columbia, SC and Joy Dozier of New York City; sister, Carrie Rudisil of Port Ritchey, FL.

Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 214 North Academy Street, Mooresville, NC 28115.

Beagle, John Charles

CARY -- John Charles Beagle, Jr., 74, of 414 Ann Street, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at Cary Health and Rehab after an extended battle with lung cancer. Mr. Beagle attended UNC at Chapel HIll and while there was a member of the last US Navy Pre-Flight Class of WWII. `Charlie' was a member of the Cary Masonic Lodge #198, The Good Sam's Club, and White Plains United Methodist Church where he was active in the Pathfinders Sunday School Class. He was founder and owner of B&B; Hardware of Durham.

funeral service is 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at White Plains United Methodist Church, Cary with burial at Hillcrest Cemetery, Cary.

Surviving are son, Kim Beagle of Cary; daughter, Terry Beagle of Raleigh; half-sister, Connie Schooler of Florida.

Mr. Beagle was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Lamb Beagle on July 23, 1998.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 7:00-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at L. Harold Poole funeral service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home, 414 Ann Street, Cary, NC 27511.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to White Plains United Methodist Church, 313 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511.

Covington, Travis Lon

RUBY -- Travis Lon Covington, 18, died May 25, 2001. Funeral is 3 p.m. May 28, 2001 at Sweet Home Baptist Church, Ruby, SC. Flemming Funeral Home of Chesterfield is in charge of arrangements.
