ROCKWELL -- Mrs. Maribeth `Beth` King Bost, 53, died May 15, 2001. Funeral is 11am Thursday at Grace Lowerstone UN Church of Christ. Powles Funeral Home is serving the family.

Hughes, James Clyde `Jim`

CONCORD -- James Clyde `Jim` Hughes, 78, of Dakeita Circle, died Monday, May 14, 2001 at his residence. The funeral service will be conducted Friday, May 18, 11:00 AM at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home Chapel, with the Reverend Jack Phillips officiating. The burial will be at Candor Cemetery. The visitation is Thursday, 7-9 PM Briggs-Candor Funeral Home in Candor.

Mr. Hughes was a native of Mitchell County and was born on October 1, 1922 the son of Garfield and Dorothy Street Hughes. He was a retired construction superintendant. He was also a veteran of World War II, serving in the army. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Hughes in July, 2000.

Survivors are his daughter, Delena Ann Rosie of Chesapeake, VA, 2 sons: James Sidney Hughes of Concord and Keith Hughes of Creedmoor; brother, G. Hughes of Houston, TX, 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cabarrus County, PO Box 1235, Concord, NC 28026.

Briggs-Candor Funeral Home of Candor is serving Mr. Hughes' family.

Hovis, Clyde Lee

ROBBINSVILLE -- Clyde Lee Hovis, 88, of The Tuskeegee Community in Robbinsville, NC, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Britthaven of Graham.

A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late Luther and Ellen Pierce Hovis.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Casey Hovis of Robbinsville, NC; son, Kenneth Hovis of Denver, NC; step-daughter, Marie Vinice of Merritt Island, FL; brother, Sumner Leonhardt of Lincolnton, NC. He has fourgrandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Tuskeegee Baptist Church. The Reverends Larry Grindstaff and Roger Millsaps will officiate. Burial will be in Breedlove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 Wednesday at the church, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tuskeegee Baptist Church Building Fund, 270 Lower Sawyer Creek Road, Robbinsville, NC 28771Townson-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Austin, George Willis

George Willis Austin, age 65, of Mooresville, formerly of Charlotte, died Sunday, May 27, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. There will be a memorial celebration at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Page officiating. Those attending are invited to a reception in the fellowship hall of the Church following the service. The interment will be private in Sharon Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of The Tom Bowers Class and The Laird Lewis Sunday School Classes. Active pallbearers will be BIll Bailey,k Steve Bunker, Phil Gamble, Bill House, Bob Lindsay, Tom Bowers, Walt Coker, and Joe Caudell.

George was born March 15, 1936 in Smithfield, North Carolina, a son of Lucille McLemore Austin and the late, William Joseph Austin. He grew up in Smithfield where he was an all-county basketball player for Smithfield High School in Johnston County. He was also a prominent member of the Choral music program at his high school.

George worked for Campbell Soup Company for thirty-eight years. He received the honor of induction into the Campbell Food Service Hall of Fame. He graduated from Wake Forest University where he played basketball and received a degree in history and English. A member of Charlotte's First Baptist Church, George has been active in the choir, a frequent soloist and an ordained deacon. Prior to moving to Charlotte he was active in the Asheville Community Theater. He also had been a member of Opera Charlotte and The Lifestyle Singers.

George was a multi-talented, multi-faceted individual who loved everyone and was known for his warmth, his talent, and his puns. He could get on a bus full of strangers and have them all singing and laughing in no time at all. He loved crossword puzzles and playing bridge. He will be remembered by many who past him jogging on Albemarle Road or on the streets of Mooresville.

In addition to his mother, George is survived by his wife, Emory Earp Austin, two sons, George Willis (Billy) Austin, Jr. and his wife, Debra Sue of Charlotte, and Joseph Burnford Austin and his wife, Amy Robillard of Wake Forest, NC; a daughter, Beth Austin Phillips and her husband Larry of Charlotte; a sister, Margaret LeMaster and her husband, Leonard of Tucson, Arizona; a brother, William Joseph Austin Jr. and his wife, Gail Russell of New Bern, NC; grandchildren, Mikaela Erika Austin, Sarah Anne Austin, Gary Jennings Phillips and William Joseph Austin III; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Music Ministry, First Baptist Church, PO Box 31046, Charlotte, NC 28231.

Davis, Ida Mae E.

CONCORD -- Mrs. Ida Mae E. Davis, died Sunday, May 27, 2001. Funeral 11am Wednesday, Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel; visitation 6-8pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Wilkinson Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

McAuley, Leroy

ELLERBE -- Leroy McAuley, 86, died Monday, May 28, 2001. Funeral 4pm Wednesday, Rourk Presbyterian Church; burial in church cemetery. Carter Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Haywood, Beulah Baucom

MONROE -- Mrs. Beulah Baucom Haywood, 75, died Sunday, May 27, 2001 at the Union Regional medical Center.

Born March 26, 1926 in Union County, she was widowed by Charles Jackson Haywood and a daughter of the late Justus and Lessie Simpson Baucom.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at 2 PM from the Chapel of McEwen Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-9 PM at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe.

Mrs. Haywood is survived by a son, Gary Haywood of Monroe; a daughter, Lesa Almond of Indian Trail; three brothers, Beamer Baucom of Concord, Keith Baucom and Glenn Baucom of Monroe; four sisters, Dean Hicks of Concord, Pauline Hinson, Mary Crowell and Jackie Rushing, all of Monroe; as well as four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28112.

The McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is caring for the Haywood family.

Reese, Ronnie J.

Mr. Ronnie J. Reese, 42, of 10218 Woody Ridge Road, died Monday, May 28, 2001 in Charlotte. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at 6:00 p.m. at Calvary Christian Church, 3001 Kilborne Drive, Charlotte, NC, with Bishop Edward C. Roberts officiating. funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. at Faith Apostolic Church, Birmingham, AL. Interment will follow at the Highland Memorial Gardens, Bessemer, AL.

Mr. Reese was Minister of Music at Grace Memorial Baptist Church. He was employed as a manager at Public Storage and was also employed with USAirways in the Utilities Department.

Surviving are his wife, Aleasha Reese, son Ronnie Reese, Jr., daughter Amber Reese, all of Charlotte, NC; mother, Mrs. Gladys Reese Terry and step-father Wadell Terry, both of Birmingham, AL; 13 brothers and sisters.

A.L. Jinwright funeral service is serving the Reese Family.

Hetzer, Lillian Theresa

Miss Lillian Theresa Hetzer, 82, of Huntersville Oaks, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at University Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, in the Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel with the Reverend Monsignor Joseph A. Kerin officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. A rosary was said at 7:00 p.m. Monday at Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel followed by visitation.

Miss Hetzer was born February 9, 1919, a daughter of the late Michael Hetzer and Lillian Voelker Hetzer, and was a retired accountant having worked for Charlotte Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her sister, Emily Mary Hetzer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Patrick's Cathedral, 1621 Dilworth Road East, Charlotte, NC 28203 or to St. Mark Catholic Church, 15415 Ranson Road, Huntersville, NC 28078.

Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Boulevard.

Schafer, Doris E.

Doris E. Schafer, 86, of Carmel Hills Retirement Community, died on Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital. Mrs. Schafer was born on March 12, 1915, in Nutley, New Jersey, a daughter of the late Hampton Auld and Sarah Hansen Auld.

She put her faith in the Lord Jesus at a very early age and passed on her Christian values to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a friend to many and was always faithfully hospitable to everyone she met.

Mrs. Schafer is survived by her son, Bronson C. Schafer, and his wife, Martha Schafer, of Los Angeles, CA; her daughter, Marcia A. Merryman, and her husband, Odell L. Merryman, of Pittsburgh, PA; four grandchildren, Kelly E. Jung, Heather G. Neuses, Barton L. Schafer, and Megan S. Eicher; four great grandchildren, Cody D. Jung, Collin S. Jung, Hannelore E. Jung, and Ashton H. Neuses; and one brother, Norman W. Auld, of Keystone Heights, FL. Mrs. Schafer was preceded in death by her husband, Crafword H.F. Schafer, in 1997.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 28, 2001, at Harry and Bryant Chapel, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC with Mr. Gib Warrick officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Griffin, Frances M.

Mrs. Frances M. Griffin, 88, of Hunterwood Nursing Home, died May 26, 2001. The funeral will be 1 p.m. May 30, 2001 at Gethsemane Baptist Church, Dr. Carver Rd., Charlotte, with the Rev. Glen Gerald III officiating. Burial will be in Bethel AME Zion Church in Catawba, SC. Visitation will be from 11-1 p.m. May 30, 2001 at Gethsemane Baptist Church.

Born December 2, 1912 in Catawba, SC, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Channie Walker. She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church for over 55 years. She was a virtuous woman and a mother to those she met. She was a great intercessor, praying on behalf of others. She loved working in her flower garden and fishing. She was a homemaker.

Survivors are sons, Eddie L. Griffin (Nellie), William Taft Griffin both of Charlotte, NC; daughters, Mamie Loretta Neely, of Catawba, SC, Tina Twitty of Boston, MA, Carrie Kennedy and Dorothy Kizzie (Henry) both of Charlotte, NC; brother, Wylie Walker and sisters, Carrie Mackey, and Ida B. McCruel, all of Catawba, SC; 23 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren.

Grier funeral service is serving the family.

Peace, Stephen Wayne

LINCOLNTON -- Mr. Stephen Wayne Peace, age 59, of 201 West Church Street, died Monday, May 28, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Navey officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mr. Peace was born on March 21, 1942 in Cleveland County to the late Isom and Ellen Blanton Peace. He worked in the construction industry.

Survivors include sons, Marcus W. Peace and Steven R. Peace of Lincolnton; daughter, Miss April D. Peace of Concord; brothers, Terry Jo Peace of Concord, NC, John W. Peace of Gastonia, NC, Jerry Peace of Shelby, NC, Robert Peace of Gaffney, SC, and Dennis Peace of Lincolnton, NC; sisters, Mrs. Nancy Brewer of Shelby, NC, Mrs. Diane Burleson of Concord, NC and Mrs. Susan Crawley of Vale, NC; grandchildren, Marcus L. Peace, Kevin W. Peace, Stephiane Peace and Makayla Cook.

Davis, Taffy John

Mr. Taffy John Davis, 52, of Charlotte, died May 27, 2001 at his residence. Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington, Dilworth Chapel.

Disher, Addie B.

Mrs. Addie B. Disher died Sunday, May 27, 2001. at Mercy Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete. Grier funeral service is in charge.

Duckworth, David Adams

David Adams Duckworth, 54, of Charlotte, died May 27, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital. A memorial service is planned at a later date. Carolina Funeral and Cremation Center is entrusted with the arrangements.

Miles, James Ernest

JEFFERSON -- Mr. James Ernest Miles, 69, of Midway, GA and originally of Jefferson, SC, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 in Savannah, GA.

funeral service is 2 PM Wednesday at Sutton Funeral Home, with interment in Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 PM tonight at Sutton Funeral Home.

A native of Jefferson, Mr. Miles was a son of the late Oscar and Mary Sullivan Miles. He was retired from Chemtall Chemical Company. In addition to his parents, Mr. Miles was also preceded in death by his sister, Betty Jean, and his brothers, Hazel and Carroll.

Survivors include his ex-wife Lexie M. Goodine of Valrico, FL; two daughters, Regina Barton of Monroe, and Jeanie Laiosa and her husband Mike, of Valrico, FL; as well as his grandchildren Timothy Lambert, Derryck Barton, Lexie Barton, Nicole Hill, Jeremy Hill and his wife Melanie, and Cameron Nicole, who is due in July.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 1229 Greenwood Cliff, Suite 109, Charlotte, NC 28204.

Sutton Funeral Home of Pageland is in charge of arrangements.

Gossett, Harry G.

MONROE -- Mr. Harry G. Gossett, Sr., 84, died Sunday at Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of Monroe. Mr. Gossett was born August 6, 1915 in Greenwood, SC, son of the late Jessie Allexander and Nancy Gossett. He was a retired insurance representative with Kanawha Insurance Company, a member of Monroe Masonic Lodge #244, a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church, and he also ran the Union County Homeless Shelter for many years.

Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the McEwen Colonial Chapel with Dr. Randall B. Jordan and Elder Larry Austin officiating. Interment will follow in the Monroe City Cemetery.

Harry was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Lois Sistare Gossett. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mae H. Gossett of the home; two sons, Harry Gossett Jr. of Saint Joseph, Michigan and Ronnie Gossett of Florence, SC; one daughter, Lynda Keziah of Monroe, NC; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a step-son, Lanny Pressley of Monroe, NC; four step-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Mill Creek Baptist Church, 5417 Morgan Mill Road, Monroe, NC 28110. The family will receive friends from seven until nine p.m. Tuesday at the McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe.
