Stafford, William L. `Bill`

CHESTERFIELD -- Mr. William L. `Bill` Stafford, 71, died Monday, May 28, 2001. funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Chesterfield with burial in the church cemetery.

Mr. Stafford was born in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late Charles Franklin `John` and Nezzie Teal Stafford. He was a retired employee of Burlington Industries. Mr. Stafford was an avid fisherman and C.B. operator, known to many as `The Pump Man.` He was preceded in death by 5 brothers, James, June C., Tom, Joseph and E.H. Stafford, and a sister, Mary Stafford.

He is survived by his son, William Leverne Stafford of Chesterfield, Sc; daughters, Pansy Owen and husband Jim of Ruby, SC, Barbara Gulledge and husband Glenn of Chesterfield, and Jeanie King and husband Jerry of Chesterfield, SC; 7 grandchildren, Austin Owen, Dylan Owen, Meghan Owen, Jamie Owen, Chance King, Ben King, and Kelley King; and sisters, Nellie Martin of Chesterfield, SC and Cubie Jean Hill of Florence, SC.

Dunn, Thomas Augustus

MOUNT HOLLY -- Mr. Thomas Augustus Dunn, Jr., 79, of 207 Norton Road, died Sunday, May 27, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late Thomas A. Dunn, Sr. and Louise Hollis Dunn, served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Tech Sergeant with the 262nd Military Police stationed at Attu, Aleutian Islands. Mr. Dunn was a boxer since the age of 14, and won 3 Golden Glove Awards before serving in the Army. During his military service, he was undefeated after 25 fights.

Following his discharge, Mr. Dunn returned to Mount Holly and graduated from Belmont Abbey College. For many years, Mr. Dunn was a boxing coach and referee with the Golden Gloves for Children, program. Mr. Dunn served for 18 years on the Mount Holly City Council, and was Mayor pro-tem for one term, and was instrumental in the building of the Highway 273 railroad underpass and the present water treatment plant. Mr. Dunn was retired credit manager for Tarheel Ford Trucks in Charlotte, was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mount Holly, where he served as an usher and was on numerous church boards, was a member of the American Legion Post #152, and the Mount Holly Jaycees. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Flowe Dunn.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Greason Dunn; a son, Richard (Dicky) Dunn and wife Christal of Asheville; a daughter, Mary Lou Hogan and husband, Tommy of Stanley; a step son, Tod E. Slawter and wife, Susan of Raleigh; two step daughters, Tamara Baird and husband, Allen of Lenoir and Teresa Stroup and husband, Richard of Concord; a brother, Hollis Dunn of Mount Holly; two sisters, Louise McMullen of Ft. Worth, Texas; Josephine Dunn of Charlotte; and grandchildren, Matthew and Kelly Dunn, Amber and Taylor Hogan, R.J. Stroup, Cameron and Carson Slawter.

Funeral services conducted by the Reverend Mitchell Murrow will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Gardens. The family will receive friends at Woodlawn Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Wallen, Willie Carter

RALEIGH -- Mrs. Willie Carter Wallen, 88, formerly of 1714 Foxwood Drive, Garner, NC, died Monday, May 28, 2001 at Rex Hospital, following a long illness at Hillside Nursing Center, Wake Forest, NC.

She was born on July 23, 1912, in Buncombe County and was the daughter of the late Walter Gray Carter and Sarah Jane Roberts Carter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Jean Wallen; an infant daughter, Peggy Jo Wallen; sisters, Mrs. Eula Irine C. Norwood, Mrs. Willard Leona C. O'Neal, Mrs. Belah Beatrice C. Wallen and Flossie C. Roberts; brothers, William Noble Carter and Winston Westall Carter.

She attended school in Weaverville, NC and was a member of First Alliance Church, 4400 Buffaloe Road, Raleigh, NC since 1944. In addition, she was a homemaker as well as being employed at Rex Hospital, Person Street Pharmacy and Person Street Variety Store in Raleigh.

Surviving are her five children, a son, Billy Gene Wallen and his wife, Betty of Greensboro, NC; daughters, Mrs. Jackie Wall and her husband, R.B. of Raleigh, Mrs. Pat Jackson and her husband, Larry of Raleigh, Mrs. Lillian Krahl and her husband, Kenneth of Fayetteville, and Mrs. Linda Richardson and her husband, Glenn of Garner; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-9pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road.

A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at First Alliance Church in Raleigh. Interment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.

Lail, Gaither Lee

HICKORY -- Gaither Lee Lail, 91, died Monday, May 28, 2001. Funeral 2pm Wednesday, Bethlehem Church of God; burial in church cemetery. Visitation 7-8:30pm Tuesday, Hickory Funeral Home, to whom plans are entrusted.

Ledford, Daniel Forrest `Dan'

HICKORY -- Mr. Daniel Forrest `Dan' Ledford, 41, died Saturday, May 26, 2001. Funeral is 1 p.m. Tuesday from the graveside at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home.

Rudisill, Hubert Eugene `Rudy`

LYMAN -- Mr. Hubert Eugene `Rudy` Rudisill, Sr., 75, of 201 Earl Drive, and 913 Poplar Drive in Surfside Beach, SC, died Sunday, May 27, 2001 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

A native of Lincolnton, NC, he was the son of the late Jessie Guy Rudisill and Eugenia Lockman Rudisill. He was a graduate of Paw Creek High School near Charlotte, NC, a World War II Veteran of the United States Navy, and retired from ITT Grinnell.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Swanee Blackwell Rudisill, daughter, Sheree Rudisill Turner of Lyman and a son, Hubert E. Rudisill, Jr., of Chapin, SC. In addition to his wife, two children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, he is also survived by his brothers, Robert G. Rudisill of Denver, NC, Lawrence E. Rudisill of Lucia, NC, Lewis Rudisill of Mt. Holly, NC, and predeceased Loy Rudisill of Hickory, NC.

Mr. Rudisill was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church of Wellford, a lifetime member of Jackson Masonic Lodge, and was active for many years in the Surfside Beach Float Fishing Association.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 PM Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at Wood Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, May 31, 2001 at Wood Mortuary conducted by Rev. Robert Wofford, Pastor of Immanuel United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Wood Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 282, Wellford, SC 29385. The family is at the home.

Winkler, Honor Dee Redmond

BOONE -- Mrs. Honor Dee Redmond Winkler, 97, died May 27, 2001. Funeral is 11 AM today at Boone Advent Christian Church, interment in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens. Austin and Barnes Funeral Home is in charge.

Faulkner, Stephen Mack

GASTONIA -- Mr. Stephen Mack Faulkner, 51, of 417 E. Club Drive, died May 28, 2001 at his home.

funeral service is 11 AM Thursday at Lowell Church of God, with Reverend Joe Heffner officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9 PM tonight at Greene funeral service Southside Chapel.

Mr. Faulkner was a native of Gaston County, born on December 1, 1949. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill Mack and Evelyn Haas Faulkner, and by a stepbrother, Billy Mack Faulkner.

Mr. Faulkner is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Rick Black of Salisbury; stepbrother Malachi Faulkner of Gastonia; uncles and aunt Howard, Floyd and Grady R. Haas, and Jewel Baker; and grandchild Tyler Black of Salisbury.

Greene funeral service Southside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Pressley, Clara Louise East Howard

HARRISBURG -- Clara Louise East Howard Pressley, 70, of 3833 Riverside Drive, died Monday, May 28, 2001 at her home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 PM at Carter Funeral Home, Ellerbe Chapel, with Reverend Donnie Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Little River United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Pressley was born April 27, 1931 in Montgomery County, a daughter of the late Sam and Helen McPhaul East. She was a member of Little River United Methodist Church, a nursing assistant and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by a son, John E. Howard, and brothers Hugh Lee East, Lawrence Weaver East and Sam East, Jr.

Surviving are a son, Michael A. G. Howard of the home; daughter-in-law Pamela Fesperman Howard of the home; grandsons Michael Wade Howard, of the home, and Jeremy Howard, of Concord; brothers Knox East and Wilton East, both of Mt. Gilead, and Bill East of Monroe; sisters, Marie E. McQueen and Betty Dennis, both of Ellerbe.

The family will see friends from 7-8:30 PM Wednesday at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cabarrus County.

Carter Funeral Home of Ellerbe is in charge of arrangements.

Godfrey, James Henry

FOREST CITY -- Mr. James Henry Godfrey, Jr., 74, died May 28, 2001. Graveside service is 2 PM Thursday in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation is 10 AM until 1 PM Thursday at Padgett and King Funeral Home of Forest City.

Crump, Lynn Renee

LENOIR -- Lynn Renee Crump, age 42, of Neighborly Place, died May 28, 2001. Funeral W. Lenoir Bapt. Church, May 30, 4PM. Burial Blue Ridge Mem. Park. Vstn: at the church May 30 3-4PM. Pendry's Lenoir Funeral Home is in charge.

Fair, Cornelia Ball

Cornelia Ball Fair, 72, died Sunday, May 27, 2001 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, N.C. She was born in Statesville, N.C. on March 29, 1929 and was the daughter of David Vance Ball and Viola Johnson Ball. Cornelia finished Dillon High School in Dillon, S.C. and attended the Woman's College of The University of North Carolina in Greensboro and Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, N.C. She with her husband, James Carlisle Fair had lived in Charlotte, N.C. since 1954. She was a member of Saint John's Episcopal Church and Carmel Country Club. Cornelia, a loving wife and mother, devoted her entire life to her family. When her two sons became old enough, she worked with a manufacturers representative organization for a number of years.

Cornelia's strong belief in God allowed her to accept her illness as part of His plan. She embraced it with tremendous courage, handling it with dignity and grace.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, David Fair of Davidson, and Jeffrey Fair and his wife, Lyn and their Children, Corrie, Bradley and Jaime of Chapel Hill. Other survivors include her mother, Viola Ball Boyle of Davidson, the wife of the late Reverend William Patrick Boyle; sister, Patsy Boyle Phillips and husband, Jim of Black Mountain; niece Laura P. Kerr of Albemarle; and nephews, Raymond Phillips of Port Huron, Michigan, and William Caballero of Sewickley, Pennsylvania. In addition to her father, her sister, Nancy Boyle Caballero preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 1, 2001 at Saint John's Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road in Charlotte with the Reverend Gale Cooper officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held in the church parish hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint John's Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28226, or Lineberger Center, UNC Hospitals, 101 Manning Drive, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599.

Jenkins, Glenn

Mr. Glenn Jenkins, Jr., 60, of Charlotte, died Friday, May 25, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. The funeral will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at McEwen funeral service, Charlotte Chapel. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family received friends Monday at the funeral home.

Glenn Jenkins was born December 12, 1940 in Swain County, NC, son of the late William and Eliza Jane McLean Jenkins. Glenn attended church at New Grace Baptist Church in Iron Station. He was the owner of Precision Mechanical Co. for over 30 years. Glenn was always helpful and caring to anybody in need. His grandchildren were the lights of his life.

Mr. Jenkins is survived by his daughter, Michelle Lanier and Ted Faulkner of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Brittni, Samantha, and Tiffany; three brothers, Elmer, Tom, and Jerry; one sister, Mary; six nieces; and four nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia T. Jenkins in 1999.

Harris, Jonathan Lamar

Mr. Jonathan Lamar Harris, 26, of Matthews, died May 25, 2001 in Charlotte.

funeral service is noon Thursday, May 31, at Reeder Memorial Baptist Church, with Dr. C. Donald Steger officiating. Interment will be in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Charlotte. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Harris was a native of Waukegan, IL. He accepted Christ at an early age, and untied with Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Zion, IL. He attended St. Joseph High School in Kenosha, WI. Mr. Harris was a graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technology, and completed course work at Tech. Train Computer School in Charlotte, NC.

Survivors include his parents, Manuel and Bessie H. Harris of Matthews; three brothers, Orlando Harris of Ft. Wayne, IN, Carl A. Harris, Sr. of Zion, IL, and Will McPhaul, Sr. of Mint Hill, NC; one sister, Valerie L. Harris of Ft. Wayne, IN; grandfather Clayton Harris, Sr. of Waukegan, IL; and grandmother Tempey Hamilton of Eutaw, AL.

Long and Son Mortuary Service is serving the Harris family.

Davis, Lacy Leward `Creek'

CHESTERFIELD -- Mr. Lacy Leward `Creek' Davis, 71, died May 27, 2001. The funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Friendship United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mr. Davis was born in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late Henry Cleaon and Mannie Griggs Davis. He was a retired employee of the S.C. Dept. of Highways and Public Transportation, with 41 years of service, and was an active member of the Friendship United Methodist Church. Mr. Davis was a member of the Chesterfield Masonic Lodge #220, and was preceded in death by a brother, Junious C. Davis.

Survivors are wife, Betty Eddins Davis of the home; 2 sons, James Davis of Gaffney,k SC and Tim Davis of CHesterfield, SC; 1 daughter, Kathy Goodale of Florence, SC; 2 brothers, Robert Lee Davis of Chesterfield, SC and J.B. Davis of Kershaw, SC; 1 sister, Eloise Stancil of Chesterfield, SC; also five grandchildren, Rebecca Davis and Ryan Davis of Chesterfield, SC, Pierce Goodale, Lacey Goodale, and Collin Goodale of Florence, SC.

Memorials may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, c/o Dawn Funderburk Rt. 1, Box 98, Ruby, SC 29741.
