SALLY BATES MATTHEWS

Sally Bates Matthews, 58, of Sanford died Monday, October 25, 2004 at the UNC Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home in Sanford.

Mrs. Matthews was preceeded in death by her husband, Ralph Matthews.

Survivors include daughters, Crystal Tobin of Hope Mills, Cindy Hart of Sanford; sons, Stephen (Stevie) Matthews of Richlands, Raymond Matthews of Sanford, Mark Matthews of Bonlee; brothers, George Bates of Broadway, Stephen Bates of Fayetteville, David Bates of Broadway; sisters, Shirley Kennedy of Sanford, Glenda McCardle of Sanford; 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

JOHN BRUCE JESTER

Mr. John Bruce Jester, formerly of Edith Lane, Greensboro, died Tuesday, October 26, 2004.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, North Elm Street, Greensboro.

An avid fisherman, Mr. Jester was a member of the Guilford Wildlife Club. He was retired from J. P. Stevens. He was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Constance P. Jester and a daughter, Sara Lynn Burkett.

Mr. Jester is survived by his son, Alan Jester and wife, Darlene of McLeansville; stepdaughters, Leslie Hall and husband Bob of Siler City, Sandi Patterson and husband, Gary of Jonesville; brother, Lonnie Edenfield of Robbins, Ga.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

L.M. (Buck) PETTY, Jr.

L. M. (Buck) Petty, Jr., 79, of Siler City died Friday, (10-22-2004) at his home.

Funeral services were held Sunday, (10-24-2004) at 3:00 pm Plainfield Friends Meeting, Siler City with Larry McEntire and Will Carter officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors include a son, Kerry Petty of Siler City; daughters, Kaye P. Hinshaw and Joan P. Perry, both of Siler City, Sandra P. Cooper of Snow Camp; sisters, Lib Farrell of Pittsboro, Adell Brooks and Pat Andrews, both of Siler City; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of UNC, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312 or Plainfield Friends Meeting Cemetery Fund, c/o Grace Hargrove, 1953 Silk Hope-Liberty Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

DUANE EUGENE SCHUMACHER

Mr. Duane Eugene Schumacher, 62, of Siler City died Thursday, (10-14-2004) at his residence.

Services were conducted at 7 p.m., Saturday, (10-16-2004) at Griffin funeral service and Cremation in Pittsboro.

Mr. Schumacher, a native of Hume, NY, was a retired carpenter after several years in the construction business.

Survivors include daughters, Diane Short of Gibsonville, Becky Palmer of Goldston, Paula Flint of Moncure, Donna Davis of Siler City, Mary Jane Taylor of Pittsboro, Cindy Pasnik of Middleport, NY; sons, Duane Schumacher of Chapel Hill, David Schumacher of Siler City; mother, Pearl Morgan Schumacher of Gasport, NY; brothers, Robert Schumacher of Medina, NY, Allan Schumacher of Middleport, NY, Roy Schumacher of Brockport, NY, Paul Schumacher of Lockport, NY; sister, Judy Weaver of Lakeland, FL; fourteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and former spouse, Judy Schumacher of Pittsboro.

HERBERT ARTHUR SHOPLAND

Mr. Herbert Arthur Shopland, 81, of Pittsboro Christian Village died Thursday (10-14-2004) at UNC Hospitals.

Services were held at 10 am Monday, (10-18-2004) at Pittsboro Christian Village worship center with Pastor Simeon Gay. Interment followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Mr. Shopland, a native of Dedham, Mass., served in the US Navy Air Corp during World War II and was a retired Clinical Information Systems Salesman.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Craig Shopland of the residence; son, Mark David Shopland of Indiana, PA; daughters, Barbara J. DePinto of Sunbury, PA, Janet Ellen Irvin of Satellite Beach, FL; brother, Edward Shopland; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

LOTTIE DIXON GILMORE

Mrs. Lottie Dixon Gilmore, 79, of Pittsboro died Thursday, (10-14-2004) at her residence.

Graveside services were conducted at 3 pm Sunday, (10-17-2004) at Pittsboro Baptist Church cemetery with Rev. Tripp Harmon officiating.

Mrs. Gilmore was a native of Siler City and a member of Pittsboro Baptist Church.

Survivors include a brother, Nesbitt Dixon of Pittsboro; and a sister, Ellen Dixon Clark of Augusta, GA.

ROBERT EARL BREWER, SR.

Mr. Robert Earl Brewer, Sr., 65, died Thursday, (10-14-2004) at his home.

A memorial service was held Saturday, (10-16-2004) at the chapel of Knotts funeral service in Pittsboro.

Mr. Brewer was a native of Pittsboro, a graduate of Horton High School. a veteran of the US Army, and a member of Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church.

Survivors include a son, Robert Earl Brewer, III; a sister, Earnestin Mangum of New Jersey.

LESSIE JOHNSON HARRIS

Lessie Johnson Harris, 82, of Pittsboro died Sunday (10-17-2004).

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday (10-22-2004) in Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Rex Brooks, officiating.

Friends will be received immediately following the graveside service.

She was a native of Chatham County and a retired office manager with University of North Carolina System.

There are no immediate survivors.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.

ERNEST F. (Dick) WILLETT

Ernest F. (Dick) Willett, 75, of Siler City died Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at his home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 9, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Loves Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Helms officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Willett was a native of Chatham County, and retired as owner-operator of Willett's American Auto Repair. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and attended Loves Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Steven H. and Sue Trogdon Willett and a sister, Hilda W. Willette.

Survivors include his wife, Polly Stone Willett of the home; daughter, Katherine Willett Hackney of Raleigh; sister, Hazel W. Clay of Siler City; granddaughter, Mary Katherine Hackney of Chapel Hill; grandson, William Spencer Hackney II of Wilmington; and great-grandson, Nathan Spencer Hackney.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of UNC, Chatham Unit, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312 or Loves Creek Baptist Church Bus Fund, 14680 US64W, Siler City, NC 27344.

W. NORMAN SHARPE

Mr. W. Norman Sharpe died April 24, 2004 at age 101 in Roanoke, VA as a result of old age.

He was born October 23, 1902 in Burlington, the sons of Walter E. Sharpe, a trustee of Elon College, and Sallie Fearrington Sharpe, whose homeplace has become Fearrington Village. Mr. Sharpe was a member of the first graduating class of Duke University in 1926 after the name was changed from Trinity College. In 1928, he married Margaret Horne Womble of Chatham County, who predeceased him in 1976. They had two sons; David Womble Sharpe who died in 1996, and William N. Sharpe, Jr. now of Baltimore, MD; sister, Eloise England of Cary; brother, Edwin Sharpe of Burlington; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Sharpe became a successful poultry farmer in Chatham County in the 1940s and 50s; he also worked as a social worker for the Chatham County Welfare Department from 1947 until his retirement in 1972. In 1976, Mr. Sharpe moved to Roanoke, VA where he still enjoyed traveling and numerous activities available to senior citizens. He was honored on his 100th brithday in October, 2002 with a party attended by family and friends.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mr. W. Norman Sharpe will be conducted by Mr. Thomas Danek at 3:00 p.m. Friday, October 22, 2004 at Griffin funeral service and Cremation in Pittsboro. Mr Sharpe's cremated remains will be privately interred next to his wife in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.

His son David Sharpe founded and served as first president of the Delta Rho Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity at NC State in 1950. A scholarship has been established in David's honor, and the family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to: Delta Rho Foundation, % Sean Lloyd, 305 Westridge Drive, Raleigh, NC 27609.

Arrangements are under the care of Griffin funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

G. ODELL TILLMAN

G. Odell Tillman, 69, of 145 Joe Brown Road, Bear Creek died Thursday, October 14, 2004 at Chatham Hospital, Inc.

Memorial services were held Sunday, October 17, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Siler City with Rev. Darrell Williams, Rev. Jim Wall and Rev. C. R. Smith officiating. Inurnment followed at Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Bear Creek.

Honorary pallbearers were Bill Long, James Andrews, Julian Alman, Philip Powers, Tom Clark, Alan Rosenbloom, Ed Stone, Lewis Phillips, Francis Grimes and Robert Hancock.

Mr. Tillman was a native of Chatham County, a member of the First Baptist Church, Siler City, an Army veteran and was Gulf Oil Corporation Distributor for 35 years. He was a cattleman, active past president of the the Siler City Jaycees, member of Siler City Moose Lodge, NC Oil Jobbers Association, Cattleman’s Association and Siler City Kiwanis.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Ivey Tillman of Bear Creek; sons, Christopher Odell Tillman and Elisa Prestwood of Raleigh, David L. Tillman and wife, Athena of Siler City; grandchildren, Seth Tillman, Ivey Grace Tillman; brother, Ernest Tillman of Siler City; sisters, Alberta Reitzel of Daytona Beach, FL, and Louise Cotner of Asheboro.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216; First Baptist Church, 314 North 2nd Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344; or Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 715 Sandy Branch Church Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207.

ELSIE MANN HARGRAVES

Mrs. Elsie Mann Hargraves, 83, of Pittsboro died Friday, (10-15-2004) at Laurels of Chatham.

Services were held at 3 pm on Monday, (10-18-2004) at Orange Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Pat Sykes officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Hargraves was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of Pittsboro School, a homemaker and a member of Orange Chapel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Riley of Pittsboro; son, James Hargraves of Pittsboro; sister, Hazel Ray of Chesapeake, VA; brother, John Mann of Pittsboro; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Orange Chapel Memorial Association (Cemetery Fund), 1634 Orange Chapel-Clover Garden Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

L. D. MARSH

L. D. Marsh, 64, of Siler City died Sunday (10-03-2004) at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, (10-08-2004) at Gees Grove A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Allen Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Marsh was a native of Chatham County and a retired employee of Boling Chair and Chatham Novelty.

Survivors include his wife, Eddie Lee Marsh; sons, Jackie T. Marsh of Clanton, AL, Larry D. Marsh of Waco, TX., Michael Marsh and Issac Marsh, both of Pittsboro; daughter, Beverly M. Burnett of Pittsboro; sister, Dorothy Toombs of Aberdeen, MD.; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
