DOROTHY DARK MacDANIEL

Dorothy (Dot) Dark MacDaniel, 89 of 301 South Fir Avenue, Siler City died Saturday, April 23, 2005 at Sunbridge Care Facilities after several months of declining health.

Graveside services and burial was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at Piney Grove United Methodist Cemetery, Siler City with Rev. Herbert Lowry and Rev. Jim Wall, officiating.

Mrs. MacDaniel was a native of Chatham County, a member of First Baptist Church, Siler City, and a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Marshall MacDaniel of the home; daughter, Sabra J. (Jan) Scott and husband, Lester of Siler City; sister, June Dark Huddleston and husband, Richard of Siler City; grandson, Marshall Lee Allen of Siler City; and several nieces and nephews.

HENRY LEATUS BRAY

Henry Leatus Bray, 94, of 1248 Sunset Drive, Siler City died Sunday, April 24, 2005 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Funeral services were held at 11 am on Wednesday, April 27, 2005 at Brush Creek Baptist Church, Bear Creek with Rev. Patrick Fuller and Rev. Edward Lowder officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Bray was a native of Chatham County, a life-time member and oldest surviving member of Brush Creek Baptist Church where he held numerous positions. He was elected deacon emeritus of Brush Creek Baptist Church on October 11, 1987. He retired after 39 years with Boling Chair Company, Siler City.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Wright Bray and sister, Dorothy Bray Hough.

Survivors include daughters, Nancy Bray Adkins and husband, Jim of Charlotte, Becky Ann Bray of Siler City; brothers, Clestor Bray and wife, Versie, J.C. Bray and wife, Marie, both of Siler City; sister, Fleta B. Shaw of Greensboro; nephews, Dennis Shaw and Greg Bray; nieces, Jane Crump, Shelia Rose, Lin H. Mitchell; and seven great-nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Judy Lane, 45 John Lane Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207.

SARAH SMITH JONES

Sarah Smith Jones, 65, of 1285 Moon's Chapel Church Road, Siler City died Saturday, April 23, 2005 at her residence.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at 11 am at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City, with Rev. John Harmon officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Jones was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and member of West End United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a sister, Sally Smith Oldham.

Survivors include her husband, Lynn Willard Jones; sons, Jeffery Lynn Jones and wife. Vickie, Phillip A. Jones and wife, Susan, all of Siler City; daughters, Lisa Jones Perry and husband, David of Hillsboro, Denise Jones Burgess and husband, Robert of Coleridge; brother, Kerney Smith, Jr. of Siler City; sisters, Jane Shaw of Ramseur, Linda Burgess of Siler City, Patsy Howard of Pittsboro; twelve grandchildren, Chad Allen, Kevin Jones, Amanda Jones, Crystal Riddle, Phillip Jones, Jr., Stephen R. Tanner, Tabatha Tanner, John Nicholas Bowman, Tiffany Ann Bowman, Troy C. Donahue, Katie D. Donahue, Samantha N. Burgess and four great-grandchildren, Haley Brooke Jones, Logan Jones, Madison Jones, and Connor G. Jones.

RUTH LAMBETH MOODY

Ruth Geddie Lambeth Moody, 84, of Bear Creek died Monday, April 25, 2005 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Graveside services and burial are being held at 11:30 am on Thursday, April 28, 2005 at Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Bear Creek, with Rev. Robert Capps officiating. Charles Safrit will play the Scottish Bag Pipes.

Mrs. Moody was a native of Lee County and a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church. She attended Appalachian State College, Rex School of Nursing and was accepted to serve as a nurse during WW II and served as a nurse in Lee County, Chatham Hospital and SunBridge Rehabilitation Center in Siler City. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Curtis Moody, Sr.

Survivors include her daughter, Jane Lambeth Moody; son, William Curtis Moody, Jr., both of the home; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was scheduled for Wednesday, April 27, 2005 from 7 to 9 pm at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City. At other times, the family will be at the family home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the local humane society.

BUFORD H. BARROWS

Buford H. Barrows, 87, of Siler City died Monday, (04-25-2005) at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, (04-27-2005) at Siler City Presbyterian Church with Rev. J. Sue Flippin and Rev. Sam McGregor officiating. Burial followed at Hickory Mountain Baptist Cemetery, Siler City.

Mr. Barrows was a native of Kansas City, MO. He attended the University of Missouri at Columbia. He was an Army veteran of WW II and retired from Siler City Mills. He was an active member and deacon of the Siler City Presbyterian Church and a fundraiser for Chatham Habitat for Humanity.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Crawford Irvin Barrows of the home; daughters, Betti B. Barrows of Scotch Plains, NJ, Karen A. Barrows, Hamilton, NJ; son, Thomas H. Barrows, Denver, CO; and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to: Siler City Presbyterian Church, 720 West Third Street, Siler City, NC 27344; Community Home Care and Hospice, 1514 South Horner Blvd., Sanford, NC 27330; or to Chatham Habitat for Humanity, 467 West Street, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

GEORGE RAYMONDE "RAY" BABER

Mr. George Raymonde "Ray" Baber, of Chatham County passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at his home. Ray was born on May 12, 1954 in Charlottesville, Virginia. A 1972 graduate of Prince Edward Academy in Farmville, VA. Ray also attended Virginia Polytechnical Institute in Blacksburg, VA. where he studied engineering. For thirty years, he was employed by Bellsouth where he was a Facility Technician until his death.

Ray is survived by his wife Cheryl K. Baber, stepdaughter Tammy Upchurch and husband Chris and their son, Thomas Ray of Chapel Hill.

In addition, Ray is survived by his parents, Jacob and Nellie Baber; sister, Sharon Wagner and husband Jim; brother, Doug Baber and wife Anne; nephews, Matt Wagner and Christopher Baber and great-nephew, Bailey, all from Durham.

Ray was a warn and loving man who was devoted to his family. He was a friend to all with his easy smile and contagious laugh that warmed those around him. His legacy will live on in the lives of those he touched.

Friends visited with the family Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 at Orange Chapel United Methodist Church, where a memorial service was held on Saturday, April 16, 2005, at 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Building Fund at Orange Chapel United Methodist Church.

Honorary pallbearers were Employees of Bellsouth.

Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill was in charge of arrangements.

ELNORA B. BURKE

Elnora Bolling "Granny" Burke, 87, 334 Sandy Branch Church Road, Bear Creek died Thursday, April 14, 2005 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Graveside services and burial were held Sunday, April 17, 2005 at Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Val Chadwick and Rev. Robert Capps officiating.

Mrs. Burke was a native of Pennsylvania County, VA and a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church. She was owner/operator of Burke Ideal Beauty Shop and was preceded in death by her husband, Robey Louis Burke and parents, Charlie and Hester Bolling.

Survivors include a son, Robey Lee Burke, Sr. and wife, Cynthia H. Burke of Bear Creek; daughter, Carolyn Burke Binkley of Graham; seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Sandy Branch Baptist Church, 715 Sandy Branch Church Road, Bear Creek, N.C. 27207 or Chatham County Council on Aging, PO Box 715, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

CLYDE CULLEN SHORT

Clyde Cullen Short, 83, of 401 North Fir Avenue, Siler City died Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at Chatham Hospital, Inc., in Siler City.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 16, 2005 at 2:00 P.M. at Loves Creek Baptist Church, 14680 US 64W, Siler City with Rev. Roy Helms, Rev. L. M. Williamson, Rev. Randy Jetton and Rev. J.R. Bouldin officiating. Burial followed in Loves Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Short was a native of Chatham County, a member of Loves Creek Baptist Church where he was president of #3 Men's Sunday school class, past deacon and former Sunday school superintendent. He was an Army veteran of WW II and was retired after 40 years from Thompson and Arthur Paving where he was a foreman and heavy equipment operator.

Active pallbearers were Jeffrey Brown, Lester Gaines, Charles Jordan, Jamie Kennedy, Larry Kiser, Don Pike, Johnny Shaw and Anthony Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Men's No. 3 Sunday school class: Eugene Andrew, C.B. Brooks, Clifton Brown, Graham Dowd, Buddie McLaughlin, Ernest Richardson, Alton Phillips, Lynton Womble, Buddie Smith; and the Men's Fellowship group: James Fields, Alton Gaines, Fisher Hamer, Julian Hamer, Reid Jones and Ralph Wilson.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Nadine Womble Short of the home; brother, Earl E. Short and wife Hilda of Siler City; sister, Jo Short Pike of Siler City; and several nieces and nephews.

WILLIAM ROY JOHNSON

William Roy Johnson, 62, of Siler City died Monday, April 11, 2005 at his home.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2005 at Pleasant Hill Christian Church by Rev. Howard Spray. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Johnson was a member of Pleasant Hill Christian Church. He was a retired farmer and a collector of classic Ford Mustangs. He loved to ride horses and was a former member of the Pleasant Hill saddle club.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Betty Overman Johnson; daughter, Sheila Wakeman and her husband Jeff of Charlotte; son, William Everett Johnson and his wife Jena of Goldston; mother, Mrs. Cuma Johnson Shea of Ramseur; sisters, Ida Glidewell and husband Ralph of Liberty, Elizabeth Ann Cox of Franklinville; grandchildren, Justin, Haley, Natalie and Lindsey Johnson, Courtney, Emily and Julia Wakeman.

WILLIAM E. HORNER, JR.

William E. Horner, Jr., 67, of Sunset Beach died Thursday (04-14-2005).

Memorial services were held at 11 am Tuesday, (04-19-2005) at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Sanford.

Survivors include a son, Bill Horner, III; daughter, Belinda Horner Cooper of Hampstead; sisters, Louise Horner Bowles of Greensboro, Nancy Horner Hulin of Carolina Beach; and three grandchildren.

Mr. Horner was a native of Sanford, graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill, served in the U.S. Navy and was the retired publisher of The Sanford Herald. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club, both of Sanford, and was active on the board of directors for Southern National (later BB&T). He also served a term as director for the North Carolina Press Association.

Memorials may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center, 10 Doctors Circle, Suite 4, Supply, N.C. 28432, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

MR. CHARLIE “LIGHTING” RODGERS

Mr. Charlie “Lightning” Rodgers, 90, of Siler City, died Thursday, (04-14-2005) at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 4 pm on Sunday, (04-17-2005) at Evans Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church

with Dr. J. C. White officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Euphenia S. Rodgers, of the home; sons, Bobby Rodgers of the home, Charlie Rodgers, Jr. of Greensboro, Howard Rodgers of Richmond, VA., LeRoy Rodgers of Durham; daughters, Doris R. Belton of Pleasant Garden, DeLois Alston of Pittsboro; sisters, Claudia DeGraffenreidt, Codella Foust, Tina Gilmore, all of Greensboro; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
