CATHERINE WATTS VAUGHN

Catherine Watts Vaughn, 71, of Pittsboro, died Thursday, (10-18-2012). Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, (10-20-2012) at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home, Pittsboro.

LLOYD COOLIDGE GARNER

Mr. Lloyd Coolidge Garner 79, of Seagrove, passed away Thursday, (10-18-2012) at Woodland Hills in Asheboro.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, (10-21-2012) at 2:30 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church, where he was a member, with Rev. Brian Faircloth and Rev. Gerald Ward officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Garner was a Randolph County native and a retired sawmill worker. He was an avid musician, a master banjo picker, having played with several groups over the years.

Survivors include his wife, Penny Cox Garner of the home; step-son, John Christie of Asheboro; sister, Mavine Yow of Seagrove; brother, Amon Garner of Asheboro; and three step-granddaughters.

LEVI MARTIN JESSUP

Levi Martin Jessup, Jr., 72, of King died Friday (10-19-2012) at his home.

Funeral services were held Sunday (10-21-2012) at 3 p.m. at Howell-Nelson Funeral Chapel with interment following at Westfield Friends Meeting Cemetery.

Mr. Jessup was born February 14, 1940 to the late Levi and Doasha Jessup. He was a self-employed forklift mechanic. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Boyd, Howard, Marvin Jessup and sister, Bessie Brewer.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta Hillegas Jessup of the home; sons, Perry Lee Jessup, Sr. of Rural Hall, Gregory Martin Jessup of Advance, Brian Samuel Jessup of King, Leland Eric Jessup of Pinnacle; daughters, Luanne Jessup Cardwell of Winston-Salem, Valorie Leigh Jessup Williams of Elkin; sisters, Eva Ward of McLeansville, Inez Brown, Mary Creason, June Dixon, Rachel Johnson, all of Siler City, Laura Hauser of Walkertown, Linda Sink of Winston-Salem; brothers, Lester Jessup of Burlington, Rex Jessup of Siler City, Richard Jessup of New Jersey; 17 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, PO Box 863, Walnut Cove, NC 27052.

HARLOW WAYNE PAUL

Harlow Wayne Paul, 84, of Bear Creek died Monday, (10-22-2012) at the VA Medical Center in Durham.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, (10-25-2012) at 11 a.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Darrell Garner will officiate.

Mr. Paul was born in Jefferson County, IA, June 2, 1928, the son of Marion Harlow and Pearl (Shill) Paul. He was a retired Army Chief Warrant Officer (4), and had served two tours in Vietnam. He retired from the Pentagon, and later served as a Chatham County Magistrate. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Scott Paul and daughter, Paula Brooks Lovell.

Survivors include daughters, Terri M. Hillars of Newton, IA, Karen Brooks Green of Chapel Hill; son, Larry Paul of Newton, IA; four grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 200 Sanford Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

ELSIE MOON LINDLEY

Elsie Moon Lindley 95, of Pittsboro died Friday, October 19, 2012 at Hospice & Palliative Care Center Of Alamance-Caswell, Burlington, NC.

Mrs. Lindley was born March 8, 1917 in Chatham County. She was the daughter of Arthur and Clara (Terry) Moon. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wayne Lindley, a son, Bobby Lee Lindley; brothers, French and Elmer Moon, sisters, Lou Alice Moon Gray and Hilda Gray Moon Petty.

Elsie attended Mud Lick School until the 5th grade and then Silk Hope School where she loved basketball and played all through high school. She was an All-County and All-State player during those days. Up until it was too difficult for her to get in the stands, she attended high school and college games.

Elsie retired from Burlington Industries, formerly Mays Hosiery, where she worked for 35 years. She often said “I loved every minute of working there”. She continued friendship with former co-workers throughout her life. She was a member of South Fork Friends Church and the Missionary Society. She was a dear friend and neighbor to many, often taking them to doctor’s appointments and other activities until she could no longer drive (at age 89). Wilma Andrew was like a sister to her.

Elsie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother…and a good Christian lady who will be missed by all. After retiring from Burlington Industries, she worked for Richard Fox at Best Foods for over 10 years cooking and cultivating many new friendships. Elsie was not one to sit at home and be idle. She was a member of the Garden Club and the Home Demonstration Clubs in Chatham County for many years where she made baskets, pillows, quilts, and other handmade items which she gave to friends and family.

She is survived by one daughter, Elaine Woody LeBuhn (Robert) of New Jersey and Colorado; daughter-in-law, Ethel Covert Lindley of Siler City; grandchildren, Sharon Lindley Bowers (Nelson) of Pittsboro, Jason Lindley Woody (Suzanne) of Greenwich, CT, Jamie Covert Lindley (Gina) of Siler City; step-grandchildren, Tony Wright, Tammy Wright Bass, Anne LeBuhn MacCowatt, Ellen LeBuhn Walsh, Robert LeBuhn and Richard LeBuhn; ; great-grandchildren, Courtney Bowers Andrews (Jim) of Hillsborough, Kelsey Bowers Maynard (Alex) of Roxboro, Aubrey Bowers of Pittsboro, and Tucker Cole Lindley of Siler City; Samuel Lindley Woody and George David Woody of Old Greenwich, CT; step great-grandchildren, Tanner and Jaycee Dooley, Morgan Wright, Hunter Bass, Mimi, Liza and Tommy MacCowatt, David and Julia Walsh, Katie, Emmaline and Johanna LeBuhn; great great-grandchildren, Avery Lee Ann Andrews and Evan James Andrews of Hillsborough; many nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Sunday, October 21, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Monday, October 22, 2012 at 11 a.m. at South Fork Friends Church, 359 South Fork-Bethel Road, Snow Camp with Andrew Needham officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

JESSE LEWIS MANESS

Jesse Lewis Maness 24, of 885 Bill Lambert Road, Bear Creek passed away.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 4 p.m at Tyson’s Creek Baptist Church where he was member with Rev. Bob Wachs and Rev. Mark Strickland officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Maness was a Lee County native and was in the 2006 class at Chatham Central High School. He attended Sandhills Community College. Mr. Maness was over Inventory at Accutite Fasteners in Winston-Salem. He loved basketball and fishing. He attended Pleasant Grove Christian Church with his grandparents, Bobby and Rama Maness. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Russell Phillips.

Mr. Maness is survived by his mother and step-father, Kathy and Danny Gaines of the home; father and step-mother, Gary and Tammy Maness of Bennett; sister, Amanda Maness of the home; brother, Chase Gaines of the home; step-brother, Casey Gaines of Roanoke, VA; maternal grandmother, Olga Phillips of Bear Creek; paternal grandparents, Bobby and Rama Maness of Bennett.

Visitation was held Monday, October 22, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel, 3833 Chatham Street, Bennett, and other times at the home.

Joyce-Brady Chapel is serving the Maness family.

GREGORY “GREGG” VAN WALKER

Gregory “Gregg” Van Walker, 66, of6593 Silk Hope Liberty Road, Siler City, passed away at his residence on Friday, October 19, 2012.

A native of Alamance County, he was the son of the late Joseph Ebb Walker and the late Sybil Perry Walker. He retired from Walker Brothers Grading and was a member of the Mason’s Siler City Lodge #403, Cowboys for Christ, and the Fish House Gang. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kent Walker.

Survivors include two daughters, Anita Weddington and her husband Anthony of Raleigh, Julie Dawn Young and her husband Jeff of Benson; four grandchildren, Nicholas Weddington, Chase Weddington, Blakely Weddington, Grayson Young; one brother, Barry Walker of Graham; one sister, Judy Hayes and her husband Tommy of Graham; and one sister-in-law, Ellen Walker.

A graveside service was held at Graham Memorial Parkon Monday, October 22, 2012 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Howard Thompson, officiating.

The family received friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory in Graham on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. At other times they were at7822 Pleasant Hill Church Road, Snow Camp.

JEAN KATHRYN WRENN HIGGINS
March 5, 1919 – October 21, 2012

Jean Kathryn Wrenn Higgins passed away Sunday, October 21, 2012 at KBR Hospice Home. Jean was born March 5, 1919 to J. Speight and Pauline Wrenn inSiler City, NC, the third of four children. She graduated from the University of NCat Greensboro. After college she joined the Navy as a WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Services) at the start of World War II. While in the military she met her husband, Victor Hugh Higgins, a marine officer. In 1945 they married. Jean was a high school English teacher for over 30 years in Georgia and North Carolina.

Jean is predeceased by her husband, her parents, three siblings, two nieces and one nephew. She is survived by her three daughters, Alice Kenney, Margaret Bennett and husband Richard, and Patricia Higgins, all of Winston-Salem; her son, Robert Higgins and wife, Julie of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Joshua and wife Allison, Mary Bennett and Suzanne, Thomas, Amy, and John Higgins; one step-granddaughter, Morgan Yarborough; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Carolina Bennett and one niece, Jean Bergin of Michigan.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 25 at 11 a.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church in the Chapel with a reception to follow. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church at 646 West Fifth Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or KBR Hospice Home at101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses at the KBR Hospice Home for their compassion and care of Jean.

AMOS ROBERT BUTLER
Amos Robert Butler, 88, of Roseboro, passed away on Monday, October 22, 2012 at Cambridge Hills Assisted Living in Pittsboro.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Roseboro United Methodist Church with Rev. Bobby Herring officiating. Burial followed at Roseboro Cemetery.

Mr. Butler was born October 17, 1924 to Edgar and Lela Jane Butler in Clinton, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Alice, two brothers and one grandchild. Mr. Butler was a graduate of NC State University and veteran of the US Army. He was a part of the Roseboro community for over 60 years. He was an owner and operator of Butler & Crumpler Milling Company in Roseboro for 35 years. He served on numerous boards and civic groups including the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Cross Creek Savings & Loan, Roseboro Area Economic Development, Boy Scouts, Girls Haven (now Boys and Girls Home of Lake Waccamaw) and other Sampson County organizations. He was also an active member of the Roseboro United Methodist Church since 1952. At the church, he was at various times a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Delegate to the Annual Conference, Lay Leader, Finance Committee Chairman and Administrative Board Chairman. Among his many hobbies were gardening, wood-working, traveling, civic activities and visiting his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include one daughter, Janie L. Butler (Bob Andrews) of Siler City; four sons, Dr. Stephen R. Butler (Marilyn Butler) of Sacramento, CA., David G. Butler (Sharon Butler) of Morganton, Dr. R. Dean Butler of Charlotte, G. Lynn Butler (Taryn Butler) of Winston-Salem; eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family received friends on Wednesday morning from 10 to 11 a.m.. in the church Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Roseboro United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8, Roseboro, NC, 28382.

“JAKE” FRANK BURNS, JR.
J. “Jake” Frank Burns, Jr., 67, of Siler City died Wednesday, (10-10-2012) at VA Medical Center, Durham.

The funeral was held Saturday, (10-13-2012) at 11 a.m. at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Phillip Nelson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Burns was born in Chatham County on September 22, 1945 at Siler City, the son of Frank and Annie (Wilson) Burns, Sr. He was a member of Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Jake was employed as a construction contractor. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Earl Burns.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Dowd Burns; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Burns of Staley; sons, Thomas Jake Burns of Norfolk, VA, Russell David Burns of Siler City; sister, Betty Lou Sanders of Eagle Springs; and five grandchildren.

BETTY JEAN McKNIGHT

Betty Jean McKnight, 77, of Port St.Lucie, Florida, died Tuesday, (10-09-2012) at the Treasure Coast Hospice, Fort Pierce.

Funeral services were held at Forest Hills Funeral Homes, Palm City Chapel at 2 p.m., Saturday (10-13-2012). Interment followed in Forest Hill Memorial Park in Palm City.

A native of Pittsboro, she was a bookkeeper for Olympic Pools in Palm City, FL, retiring after 24 years.

Survivors include daughters, Heather Mazzotta of Shillington, PA., Vali Sheridan of Sunbury, PA., Melanie Gonya of Sylvania, GA.; sister, Leslie Jo Foley of Atlanta, GA.; brothers, George Wright of Deerfield Beach, FL., Roy Wright of Bradenton, FL.; and four grandchildren.

G. RAY HUGHES
G. Ray Hughes, 75, of Sanford died Wednesday, (10-10-2012) at the E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center in Lillington.

No services are scheduled at this time.

Mr. Hughes was born in Ft.Wayne, IN, the son of the late Noah Hughes and Alta Spencer Hughes. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corp.

Survivors include his wife, Helen McNeill Hughes; daughters, Wendy Mosteller of Lincolnton, Gloria Branch of Virginia, Debbie Farr of Indiana; sons, Randy Sessoms, Eddie Sessoms, both of Pittsboro; sister, Mary Ormiston of Indiana; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
