MELVIN LEE COX
Melvin Lee Cox, 75, of Bennett, passed away Monday (10-01-2012) at his home.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, (10-03-2012) at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church where he was a member with Rev. Mark Strickland and Rev. Thurman Williams officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Cox was a Randolph County native and a heavy equipment operator, welder, and mechanic.

Survivors include sons, Melvin Lee Cox, Jr. of Savannah, Ga., William Mitchell “Mickey” Cox of Asheboro; daughter, Susan Thomas of Asheboro; step-sons, James E. Tyson of Pennsylvania, Jeff Tyson of Asheboro; step-daughters, Sandy Surrant, Lisa Hunt, Johnnie Elliott, Patty Willard, all of Asheboro; sisters, Nancy Kidd of High Falls, Margaret Ann Hayes of Asheboro, Joan McRae of Troy, Jane Gordon of Bennett; 15 grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Memorials should be directed to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1414 E. Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

DAPHNE ANDREW KING
Daphne Andrew King, 89, of Bonlee School Road, Bear Creek died Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at her residence.

Mrs. King was born in Chatham County on March 9, 1923, the daughter of Annie Andrew. She was an active member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, serving in various positions through the years including Sunday School teacher of the Ladies Class, director of VBS and WMU, a member of the choir and the Sandy Creek Baptist Association. She served as a poll worker and election judge in the Bonlee precinct. During her working career she spent time working with Fleet Baldwin, Jack Moody, Earl Fitts and was the owner/operator of Daphne King Income Tax Service. Daphne was preceded in death by husband, Hugh King; mother, Annie Andrew; son, Ronald H. King; grandchildren, Jill T. King, Michael and Anthony Barbaza, Jason Teleki and daughter-in-law, Gail J. King.

She is survived by daughters, Jane K. Teleki, Brenda K. Nall and Johnnie, Annie K. King-Gaines and John, Alice L. King and David Miller, Rose M. King; sons, Terry A. King, Samuel L. King and Leslie, Nathan King and Theresa Woody; grandchildren, Marisa Barbaza and Mike, Sean King and Liz, Charles Nall and Jo, Andrew Nall, Gavin Nall, Andrea Porter and Lloyd, Quinton King, Brandon King and Amy, Brent King, Justin King-Gaines and Lindsay, Tristan White; step-grandchildren Daniel Rhodes and Annie Rhodes; great-grandchildren, Zachary Nall, Sarah Nall Austin and Dustin, Oscar Barbaza, Quinn Barbaza, Carter King, Colby King; great-great grandchild, Camdon Austin; daughter-in-law, Diane King; special friends, Elmer Teleki, Kent Godwin, Blanton Bracey and Manley Jones.

The family received friends Thursday, September 27, 2012 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 17721 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek. The funeral was held Friday, September 28, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hickory Grove Baptist Church Missions, c/o Bronna Cockman, 17721 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek, NC 27207.

FLOYD TAYLOR HOUGH
Floyd Taylor Hough, 76, of Siler City died Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.

Mr. Hough was a native of Chatham County. Floyd was a member of Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church and retired from Joan Fabrics. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Hoyle and Lillie Hough, brother, Melvin Hough and sister, Ruth Brown.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Johnson Hough; daughters, Mary H. Buchanan and husband, Gary of Morganton, Colleen H. Avery and husband, Don of Morganton; step-sons, William “Bill” Brower and wife Catherine of Cummings, GA, Craig Brower and wife Kendra of Purcellville, VA; brothers, Robert Hough and wife Marjorie of Apex, Terry Hough and wife Susan of Kernersville; grandchildren, Charlie and Will Avery, Paula and Marianna Buchanan, Kayla, Zackary and Forrest Brower, Allen and Carolyn Brower.

The family received friends Monday, October 1, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church, 17475 US Hwy 64 West, Siler City with Rev. Mark Richardson and Rev. Jerry Foley officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City.

DOROTHY “DOT” MOODY HENSON
Dorothy “Dot” Moody Henson, 77, of US Hwy 64 West, Siler City, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Care View Rest Home, Snow Camp.

Mrs. Henson was born in Stokes County on November 1, 1934, the daughter of Gurney and Lena (Stultz) Moody. Dot, a graduate of Asheboro High School, was a homemaker and member of Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church where she sang in the choir. She helped at Brownie Lu Restaurant and assisted with election polls. Dot was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Sherry Dawn; brothers, Jimmy and Robert Moody.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Jack Henson; sons, Greg Henson and wife Pam of Siler City, Rick Henson and wife Connie of Siler City; daughter, Vickie Morris and husband Danny of Liberty; brother, David Moody of Asheboro; grandchildren, Emily H. Pellitt, Jack Henson, II, Brooke L. Little, Meredith Henson, Michael Morris and Megan M. Daniels.

The family received friends Wednesday, October 3, 2012 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church. The funeral was held at 11 a.m. at Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Jerry Foley and Rev. Mark Richardson officiating. Burial followed in Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro.

Memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1414 East Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

JIMMY LEE JOHNSON
Mr. Jimmy Lee Johnson, age 73, of Bolivia died Saturday September 29, 2012 at Premier Living of Lake Waccamaw.

Mr. Johnson was born in Chatham County, NC on July 21, 1939 and was the son of the late Jesse Lee and Mary Ruth Johnson. He was U.S. Navy veteran serving three years aboard the USS Taconic, and was a member of Holden Beach VFW Post #8866. He was employed with Allied Chemicals for fourteen years and then served as a supervisor with Brunswick County Water and Sewer Department. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. His hobbies were woodworking, painting, gardening, reading and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a son in-law, Harvey C. Mallard.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Carlisle Johnson of the home; four children, Lisa Kennedy of Longs, SC, Teresa Mallard of Ash, Sheri Mills and husband Jerry of Shallotte, Lee Johnson of Holden Beach; four grandchildren, Devane Tolbert, Jesse Mills, Stephen Mallard, Destiny Kennedy; two brothers, Benny Johnson of Supply, Earl Johnson of Newberry, SC; two sisters, Leslie Roach of Supply and Faye Galloway of Varnamtown.

A memorial service was held Wednesday October 3, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Sharon United Methodist Church with Pastor Eddie Hill officiating.

The family received friends one hour prior to the memorial service at the church and other times at the residence, 521 Colonial Landing Road, Bolivia NC 28422.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holden Beach VFW Post 8866, Supply, NC 28462 or a charity of one’s choice.

THOMAS GUTHRIE JONES
Thomas Guthrie Jones, 77, of 5402 Mt. Olive Church Road, Pittsboro, died Sunday, September 30, 2012 at the Hospice Home.

Mr. Jones was a native of Alamance County, and a graduate of N.C. State University with a degree in Agriculture. With his brothers, he was an owner and operator of Jones Brothers Dairy and Poultry Farm. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church where he served in many capacities.

Survivors include his sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Jones of Graham; niece, Gwen Jones Norwood and husband Chris of Graham; nephews, Steven Jones and wife Suzanne, Dan Jones and wife Laurie, all of Pittsboro, Kevin Jones and fiance Chipper of Raleigh; eight great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, A.M. “Bud” Jones and Lena Guthrie Jones; brother and sister-in-law, Alvis M. and Nova Jones; brother, Samuel M. Jones.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Rev. David Crowther and Rev. E. Paul West, Jr. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 5043 Mt. Olive Church Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312; or Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance/Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

SHUKURA FARRAR-CHIHOTA
Shukura Farrar-Chihota, 30, of Columbus, Ohio died Saturday (09-08-2012) at Mt. Carmel West.

Funeral services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Dehl-Whittaker Funeral Home Chapel in Columbus, Ohio with Pastor Jonathan McRey-nolds officiating.

A graveside service was held Saturday (09-15-2012) at 12 noon at Oakland McCrary Cemetery in Ramseur.

Mrs. Farrar-Chihota was a graduate of Gahanna Lincoln High School and a member of Oakley Full Gospel Church. She was employed by the OSU James Cancer Center and was enrolled at Fortis College, School of Nursing. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Geraldine Siler, Royland Siler, Bonnie Farrar and Thomas Farrar, Sr.

Survivors include her husband, William Chihota; stepdaughter, Natasha of Columbus, Ohio; parents, George and Concheata Farrar of Gahanna, Ohio; and brother, Jabari Farrar of Lillington.

RAY WILLIAM PHILLIPS
Ray William Phillips, 79, of Bear Creek, died Wednesday, (09-19-2012) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

The funeral was held Sunday, (09-23-2012) at 3 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military rites by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

Mr. Phillips was born in Chatham County on November 2, 1932, the son of Ollie Frances Gaines. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War, a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, a poultry and tobacco farmer and a retired truck driver. Ray was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Bill Phillips.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Harrison) Phillips; daughters, Sylvia Sharpe of Bear Creek, Ann Campbell of Bear Creek; son, Andy Phillips of Sanford; sister, Louise Gilchrist of Bear Creek; brother, Lester Gaines of Angier; eight grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be directed to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, External Affairs Office, UNC-CH CB#7295, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7295.

JAMES L. SIMPSON, SR.
James L. Simpson, Sr., 72, of Pittsboro passed away at The Laurels, Saturday, (08-25-2012) .

Services for Mr. Simpson will be held at a later date in Liberty, KY.

Mr. Simpson was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky, on November 12, 1939, to the late Jesse James Simpson and Dorothy Tapscott. A U.S. Marine Mr. Simpson served his country in Korea and was with the 1st Marine Corps Strike in Viet Nam. After the war, he attended Berkley and became a Master Mechanic & Welder.

He is survived by sons, James L. Simpson, Jr., of Jacksonville, Fl., Johnny L. Simpson, Sr., of Gonzales, LA, Jeffrey L. Simpson, also of Jacksonville; daughters, Joanna S. Guido, of Pittsboro, Judith S. Carter, of Virginia Beach, VA, Jacqueline S. Erbach of Manhattan, KS; ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

MRS. CALLIE WADDELL
Mrs. Callie Waddell, 91, of Sanford died Saturday (09-01-2012) at her home.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, (09-05-2012) at Knotts Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Waddell was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include sons, Franklin and Milton; sisters, Pauline Hardy, Celia Brown, Margaret Edwards; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

SHANDARON “SHAN” BURNETT BURTON
Shandaron “Shan” Burnett Burton, 60, of Graham died Monday (08-27-2012) at Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Burlington.

Funeral services were held Friday (08-31-2012) at 1 p.m. at Union Grove Baptist Church in Hurdle Mills with Rev. Rufus L. Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the church

Cemetery.

Mrs. Burton was a native of Chatham County and a graduate of Southern High School in Graham.

Survivors include her husband, James Burton; and two brothers, Shelton Reed Williams and Dean Burnett.

BILLY WAYNE BROOKS
Billy Wayne Brooks, 68, of 5755 Goldston-Glendon Rd., Goldston, died Thursday, August 30, 2012 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Mr. Brooks was born May 13, 1944, the son of Harvey and Clara Belle Jones Brooks. Billy was a native of Chatham County, retired as a Cable Manager Installer for UNC Hospitals. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing and was very devoted to his dog, Pepper.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Gaines Brooks of the home; daughters, Kelly B. Hadley of Charlotte, Heather B. Gaddy of Greensboro, and Patti Binkley of Sanford; brother, James Earl “Jimmy” Brooks and wife, Candy of Asheboro; eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Smith and Buckner Funeral Home is assisting the Brooks family.
