MARY ELIZABETH SPIVEY BEAL
Mary Elizabeth Spivey Beal, 71, of 1221 West Eleventh Street, Siler City died Monday, March 19, 2012 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Beal was born in Lee County on February 20, 1941, the daughter of Floyd and Frances Elizabeth (Beal) Spivey. She was employed as a housekeeper with Brian Center, Chatham Hospital and Universal Health Care. She attended Faith Baptist Church. Mary had a good sense of humor and loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and enjoyed spending time at White Lake. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bailey Beal; son, Bobby Gene Beal; son-in-law, Anthony Oldham; grandson, Bruce Anthony Beal; brother, Jack Spivey; and sister, Carolyn Spivey.

She is survived by three daughters, Margaret Ann B. Oldham of Siler City, Betty Lou Beal of the home, Brenda Gail B. Flippin and husband, David of Siler City; two sons, Charles Anthony Beal and wife, Joyce of Siler City, Ricky Lee Beal of the home; grandchildren, Crystal Wilson (Shane), Tylena Johnson, Lee Johnson (Katina), Kelly Oldham, Toni Hayes (Chris), Anthoniette Williams (Stephen), Natasha Beal, Jessica Beal, Marissa Beal, Sammy Flippin, Lois Hayes, David Flippin, Shane Beal, Chad Beal, Chucky Moody, Scottie Moody, Angie Hinson and Cindy Lytton; twenty-two great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

The family received friends Wednesday, March 21, 2012 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and other times at the home of Ann Oldham.

The funeral will be Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Community Baptist Church, 2575 Hamp Stone Road, Siler City with Rev. Mark Agan and Rev. Bobby Shutt officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, West Chatham Relay for Life, c/o Betty Terry, 519 South Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

GARETH LYNWOOD JOHNSON
Mr. Gareth Lynwood Johnson, 69, of Burlington, passed away at the Alamance-Caswell Hospice Home on Tuesday, (03-06-2012).

A memorial service was held at Burlington Assembly of God on Sunday, (03-11-2012) at 2 p.m. with Rev. Howard Thompson officiating.

A native of Siler City, he was preceded in death by his parents, Norman M. Johnson and Christine Wright Johnson.

He graduated from Jordan-Matthews High School, NC State University, and worked in textile management with Burlington Industries, retiring after 35 years. He also served as a US Coast Guard Reservist from 1965 to 1971. He was a member of Burlington Assembly of God where he was a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and participated in the nursing home, prison and men’s ministries.

Survivors include his wife, Donna S. Johnson; sons, Keith of Greenville, Craig of Rocky Mount; daughter, Julie of the home; brother, Ray Johnson of Snow Camp; and two granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to the Burlington Assembly of God Missions Fund, 821 Tucker Street, Burlington, NC 27215; or the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

KLAUS PETER SENKIW
Mr. Klaus Peter Senkiw, 66, of Easley, SC passed away Friday, (03-09-2012) at Baptist Hospital, Easley, SC.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, (03-12-2012) in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, Easley, SC.

Born March 3, 1946 in Bennigsen, Germany, he was the son of the late Stefan and Hedwig Martel Senkiw. Coming to the US in 1951, he grew up in Chatham County and graduated from Pittsboro High School. He served in the Navy, and did a tour of duty in Vietnam. Peter attended radio announcing school in Atlanta, GA, and was a radio announcer for many years in TN, NC and SC. After that, he began driving a long distance truck, retiring in 2008 with CFI. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dixie Lynn Senkiw, of the home; son, Richard Bradley Senkiw of Anderson; sisters, Elsbeth S. Johnson of Pittsboro; Irma S. Whipps of Hampstead; and Ella S. Oldham of Wilmington.

LARRY FRANKLIN STALEY
Larry Franklin Staley, 52 of Siler City died Saturday, (03-10-2012).

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday (03-13-2012) at Gilmore Memorial Park.

Mr. Staley was born December 27, 1959, the son of Arthur Eugene and Lillian Haithcox Staley. A native of Chatham County, he was a carpenter. Larry was preceded in death by brother, Dale W. Staley.

He is survived by a daughter, Juliann Frances Staley Elvington of Asheboro; parents, Arthur Eugene and Lillian Haithcox Staley of Siler City; sister; Tammy Staley of Siler City; and two grandchildren.

VIRGINIA DAVIS LYNCH
Mrs. Virginia “Jenny” Davis Lynch, 96, died Thursday (03-08-2012) at Laurels of Chatham.

The service to celebrate Mrs. Lynch’s life was held at 1 p.m. Monday (03-12-2012) from the graveside at Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington.

Born January 23, 1916 in Chatham County, Mrs. Lynch was the daughter of Leonidas and Delcie Oldham Davis. She was a graduate of Goldston High School, and a member of Emmaus Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son Harry L. Lynch of Pittsboro. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry L. Lynch, Sr.; siblings, Julius Davis, Robert Davis, Betty Davis, Ruth Davis Taylor and Alfred Davis.

Memorial contributions may be sent to either the AWANA or UPWARD Children’s Ministries / Programs at Emmaus Baptist Church, 2430 Silk Hope – Gum Springs Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

KRISTI LYNN HANSEN
Kristi Lynn Hansen, 35, of Chapel Hill died unexpectedly, along with her yet to be born daughter Aria Dulce Shepherd, at their home on Tuesday, (03-06-2012).

Friends honored Kristi and Aria at a memorial gathering at 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon, (03-10-2012) at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Kristi will be cremated following the memorial gathering, and a public memorial service will be held later in St. John.

Kristi was born March 16, 1976 in Sanford, Maine, the daughter of Paul Henry Hansen and Deborah Ann Munch Hansen. She was a graduate of Johnson and Wales University.

Surviving are her parents, Paul and Deborah Hansen of Acton, ME; her sister, Kelly Leigh Hansen-Fortin of Waterboro, ME; brother, Keith Paul Hansen of St. John, USVI; and her grandmother, Dolores Munch of Gales Ferry, CT.

MAGGIE BROOKS LAKE
Mrs. Maggie Brooks Lake, 88, of Pittsboro died Sunday (03-04-2012) at her home.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday (03-08-2012) at Alston Chapel Church with Elder Jerry W. Powell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Lake was a member of Alston Chapel Church.

Survivors include sisters, Mrs. Vernice Perry, Pattie Richardson, both of Pittsboro; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

MAXINE DAVIS PHILLIPS
Maxine Davis Phillips, 81, of Carthage died Monday, (03-12-12 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, (03-15-2012) at 12 p.m. at Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

Mrs. Phillips was born June 29, 1930 in Bear Creek, the daughter of Alfred Lee and Stella (Phillips) Davis, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Phillips; her parents; son, Joey Canterbury; siblings, Alfred “Junior” Davis, Wilbur Davis, Josephine Webster and Lessie Cross.

Survivors include daughters, Susan D. Parsons of Carolina Beach, Debbie D. Robinson of Prince Frederick, MD; son, Jimmy “Jim” W. Davis of Asheboro; sister Dorothy D. Phipps of Los Angeles, CA; step-son, Rick Phillips of Greensboro; seven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Wednesday, (03-14-2012) from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimers Association, Carolina Piedmont Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.

EDITH IRENE JONES WEBSTER
Edith Irene Jones Webster, 95, of Bonlee died Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at Beacon Place Hospice, Greensboro.

Mrs. Webster was born, October 29, 1916 in Stokesdale, the daughter of Buford and Elvie Lemons Jones. She was a homemaker, a member of Stokesdale Christian Church, and faithfully attended Sandy Branch Baptist Church over 70 years until her health failed. She was a member of the Hazel Moody-Mary Margaret Dunn Sunday School Class. She loved gardening, flowers and looking after other family members.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Carrick Webster; sisters, Grace Hart, Ruby Jones, Iris Jones; brothers, Thurman Jones, William “Jerry” Jones, James “Jim” Jones, Donald “Donnie” Jones and Ira Jones.

She is survived by one sister, Mattie Jones Browning of Stokesdale; one brother, Paige Jones and wife, Mary of Stokesdale; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 9, 2012 at 2 p.m., in Sandy Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Marc Sanders and Rev. Tony Capehart officiating.

Pallbearers were Brantley Webster, Lowell Hart, Keith Walters, Cory Walters, Jon Garrett and Jonathan Bare, with honorary pallbearer Dan Webster.

The family received friends in the church fellowship hall, immediately following the committal service.

Memorials may be made to Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

The Jones family wishes to thank the Webster family for the care and support over the years with a special thanks to Brantley and Pam for their tender loving care.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Wesley Long Palliative Care Unit and Beacon Place of Greensboro. Our special thanks to Dr. Mary John Baxley.

MURIEL EHRLE WILLIAMS CARLSON
Muriel Ehrle Williams Carlson, 87, of 2378 Alex Cockman Road, Pittsboro died Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at her residence.

Mrs. Carlson was born August 16, 1924 in Manhattan, New York, the daughter of Harvey B. and Pauline Ehrle Williams. Mrs. Carlson was a homemaker, the foundation of her family, a loving mother who enjoyed spending time with them. Muriel was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Carlson and a daughter, Arlene A. McKillop.

Survivors include one son, Leif Carlson and wife, Ronda of Pittsboro; daughter, Elaine J. and husband, Marty Henle of Pittsboro; grandchildren, Rachael M., Kyle L., Eric M. Carlson, John R. Henle, Cara Arlene McKillop Cain, Nicholas Sean, Katherine Maria McKillop and nine great-grandchildren.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home assisted the family.

DOROTHY (DOTTIE) ASHLEY SMITH
Mrs. Dorothy (Dottie) Ashley Smith, 85, of 188 John Emerson Road, Siler City, died at her home on Sunday, March 11, 2012.

Dottie was the wife of Rev. C. R. Smith, Jr. who preceded her in death on March 18, 2005. She was born August 15, 1926 in Williamston, SC, the youngest of ten children born to Samuel Joshua and Linnie Martin Ashley of Anderson County, SC. She was a graduate of Lander University where she received her degree in Elementary Education. Dottie, a master teacher for 40 years, began her career in South Carolina. When Rev. Smith was called to the pastorate of First Baptist Church in 1962, Dottie accepted a teaching position in Siler City. She continued until her retirement in 1991. She was a dedicated teacher and influenced many young lives throughout her career.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City. She was a Sunday School teacher of various classes through the years, most recently the Esther Class of which she was a member. She was also a member of the Barrow Mission Group and was currently the leader of the Mission Study and Prayer Committee. Dottie was very dedicated to missions and had been an active member of the WMU serving as Director, member of the Prayer and Program committees. She taught many creative and meaningful mission studies. When the church began a food pantry for the needy, Dottie was a faithful volunteer and continued to serve at the West Chatham Food Pantry from its opening until her health began to decline. Dottie was also a member of Joy in the Morning, the Senior Adult group of the church.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Randy Smith of West Palm Beach, FL; two grandsons, Spencer Smith of Fort Myers, FL and Blake Smith of Coral Gables, FL; one sister, Miriam Lark and husband Earl of Anderson, SC; and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Tuesday, March 13, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral service was held Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 314 North Second Avenue, Siler City with Rev. Tony Capehart and Dr. Leon Smith officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 314 N. 2nd Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

RONALD EDWARD BROOKBANK
Ronald Edward Brookbank, age 66, of Snow Camp, died Sunday, March 11, 2012 at his home, “The Country”, surrounded by his loving family.

Ronnie was born September 21, 1945 in Liberty, NC. He was the only child of Wilbur Francis (Bill) and Stella Ava McBane Brookbank. He graduated from Liberty High School in 1963. Ronnie served in the US Marine Reserves (Sergeant E-5) from 1966-1972. He worked in the steel fabrication industry as a structural steel draftsman/designer for 45 years. Employers include Carolina Steel, Steel and Pipe, Paschal Machinery, Contract Steel, Basic Machinery, Cofab Steel and New Ventures Drafting. Ronnie was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Siler City, and Gideon’s International.

Funeral services will be at First Baptist Church, Siler City, on Friday, March 16, 2012 at 2 p.m. with burial to follow at Bethlehem Wesleyan Church in Snow Camp. Reverends Tony Capehart and James Wall will be officiating. Visitation will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home on Thursday, March 15, 2012 from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the home.

Ronnie is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sharon Seals Brookbank; daughters Angela Burgess (husband Sam) of Greensboro and Kelly Brookbank (husband Keith Fox) of Delray Beach, FL. Other survivors are grandsons Carson and Andrew Burgess, granddaughter Lela Skye Fox, step-grandchildren Joe and Allie Fox; step-brothers Charles and Larry Hursey. He is preceded in death by his parents Bill and Ava and his step-mother Daisy Hursey Brookbank.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First Baptist Church of Siler City, Gideon’s International, Maha Shakti Foundation, Inc. (daughter Kelly’s Foundation that brings Yoga and Music therapy to the underprivileged) or Bradley’s Fun for All Playground (at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro).

The family offers a special thank you for the care given Ronnie during his last days to the physicians and staff of the 8th Bed Tower at UNC Memorial Hospital and Liberty Hospice.

Whether enjoying a Carolina ballgame, participating in exercise class, witnessing to inmates, sharing fellowship with friends, or spending time with his family, Ronnie was a man who truly loved life and will be greatly missed by all. Semper Fi.
