EDWIN “ROGER”GARVEY
Edwin “Roger” Garvey, 65, of 1079 Henderson Tanyard Road, Pittsboro, died Saturday, February 18, 2012 at his residence.

Mr. Garvey was born April 19, 1946 in New York, the son of Edwin Roger and Edith Corinne (Gibbons) Garvey, Sr. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Roger was employed by Performance Bicycle in Chapel Hill as facility maintenance. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Linda (Douglas) Garvey; four children, Kennith Garvey of New York, Christine, Eric and Craig; brothers, Kevin and Brian Garvey both of NY; sisters, Suzanne Poggio of Chicago, Maureen Garvey of California; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Lineberger Office of External Affairs, Campus Box # 7295, Chapel Hill, NC 27599. Note on check “In Memory of Roger Garvey”.

RUTH PIKE BURKE CRABTREE
Chapel Hill – Ruth Pike Burke Crabtree, 85, wife of the late William “Bill” James Crabtree, passed away Saturday evening, February 25, 2012, surrounded by family. She was the daughter of the late Seawell Carr Burke and the late Olive Pike Burke. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sylvania Elizabeth Burke. Ruth is survived by three daughters, Donna C. Cash and husband Ken, Denise C. Currin and husband Joe; Dawn C. Jackson and husband Gary, all of Chapel Hill. She has ten grandchildren, Chris and Mark Cash, Candace Currin White, Patrick, Suzanne, and Brandon Currin and Kendall, Will, Brandon, and Rachael Jackson and eight great-grandchildren.

A native of Chatham County, she retired from UNC-Chapel Hill after 32 years of service. Ruth was a member of The Women’s Fellowship of the Southern Convention of Congregational Christian Churches. She was a member of Damascus Church for 67 years where she served as Sunday School teacher, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, Director of Bible School, Director of Youth Fellowship and Church Librarian.

funeral service were conducted by Pastor Ernie Keck on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Damascus Church. She laid in state one hour prior to the service. Following the committal service in the church cemetery, the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall, and at other times at the residence.

Flowers are welcome. Memorials may be made to Damascus Congregational Christian Church Sunday School, 522 Damascus Church Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.

KEVIN DAVID LAGATOL
Kevin David Lagatol 58, of 6670 Bonlee-Bennett Road, Bear Creek died Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at his residence.

Mr. Lagatol was born in Bergen County, NJ on March 24, 1953 and was employed as a carpenter.

He is survived by, Donna Broderick; one daughter, Sara Yuppa of Hillsdale, NJ; one son, Kevin D. Lagatol II, of Ramsey, NJ; mother, Doris Kuhnert Tordini and husband, Armando of Bear Creek; a grandson, Rich Yuppa of Hillsdale, NJ; two brothers, Thomas Lagatol and wife, Janice of Westwood, NJ, Glenn Lagatol and wife, Carmen of Sparrow Bush, NY.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City with Thomas Lagatol officiating.

WILLIAM “BILLY” REED MARTIN
William “Billy” Reed Martin, 60, of Liberty passed away Friday, February 24, 2012 at his home.

He was retired from the US Postal Service, a loving father, loved to fish and play guitar.

A graveside funeral service was held Monday, (02-27-2012) at 2 p.m. at Staley Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Jack Livingston. The family received friends Sunday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was the son of the late Charlie Reed and Della Spencer Martin and was also preceded in death by one son, Travis Martin.

Billy is survived by his wife, Myra Bunton Martin; one daughter, Angie Martin of Liberty; two sons, Reed Martin of Albemarle, Christopher Martin of Mebane; one sister, Carolyn Smith of Liberty; four brothers, Charlie Martin of Virginia, Otis Martin of Siler City, Donald Martin of Liberty, Bobby Martin of Seagrove; and two grandsons, Tyler and Travis Martin.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Randolph County, PO Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27203.

BRIAN CHRISTOPHER COBB
Mr. Brian Christopher Cobb, 25, of Cary died Sunday (02-12-2012) at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

Funeral services were held Saturday (02-18-2012) at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church.

Survivors include parents, Freddie and Jacqueline Riggsbee Cobb of the home; daughter, Arana Adams; and sister, Kimberlee Cobb of the home.

KATHRYN SCOTTON
Kathryn Scotton, 88, of Siler City died Friday (02-03-2012) at U.N.C. Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 12 noon at First Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Barry Gray officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

A native of Chatham County, she was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Chatham County School System. She was a 2012 recipient of the Humanitarian Award at the Martin Luther King Day celebration. She was preceded in death by a son, Willie James Scotton.

Surviving is her husband, Willie James Scotton; daughter, Amber S. Horton; sons, C.T. Scotton, Lawrence Scotton, Michael Scotton, all of Siler City; brother, Clyde Thomas Headen of Siler City; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

HAZEL ELLIS BLAND
Mrs. Hazel Ellis Bland, 82, of Pittsboro, died Tuesday, (02-14-2012) in her home.

The celebration of life service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, (02-17-2012) from the graveside at Pittsboro United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Ben Alexander and Rev. Ray Gooch officiating.

A native of Chatham County, Mrs. Bland was born May 25, 1929 to Cecil and Josephine Hackney Ellis. She was a graduate of Pittsboro High School and operated a beauty salon from her home for a number of years. A member of Pittsboro United Methodist Church, she was active in the Diabetic Support Group at the Council on Aging. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bland was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Bland, Jr. and a daughter, Peggy Chason.

Survivors include her daughter, Sally Carr of Franklin, VA; brother, Charles Ray Ellis of Pittsboro; Hurdalene Ellis of Pittsboro; and one granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Diabetes Association, 2418 Blue Ridge Road, Suite 206, Raleigh, NC 27607, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

JOHN HERBERT ALLRED
Mr. John Herbert Allred, 88, died Saturday (02-18-2012) at his home.

The celebration of life services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday (02-21-2012), at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, with pastor Ray Gooch presiding.

Mr. Allred was born in Franklinville, January 20, 1924, the son of Michael Lewis Allred and Dora Hammer Allred. He served in World War II as a member of the US Army Air Corps and was stationed in Guam. He retired from Crawford and Company and was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Jan Allred; sister, Gladys Norman and brother, Bill Allred.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Taylor Allred; son, Herb Allred of Siler City; daughter, Carol Lawrimore of Grayson, GA.; brother, Robert Reese Allred of Lake Havasee City, AZ; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren;

LLOYD NOOE, JR.
Mr. Lloyd Nooe, Jr., 74, formerly of Pittsboro died Monday (02-20-2012) at Barbour Court Nursing Center in Smithfield.

The services to celebrate his life was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (02-22-2012) from the graveside at Pittsboro Presbyterian Church cemetery, with the Reverend Dr. Troy Lesher-Thomas presiding.

The son of Lloyd Nooe, Sr. and Mary Reva Baggett, Mr. Nooe was born November 25, 1937 in Wake County. He was a member of Pittsboro Presbyterian Church.

There are no immediate survivors. Friends visited with family in the church fellowship hall after the service.

EMILY RUTH DIXON
Mrs. Emily Dixon, 96, of Pittsboro, passed away at home, Tuesday, (03-21-2012).

Arrangements are incomplete at this time, and are in the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service.

James Wayne "Jim" Hart

Mr. James Wayne “Jim” Hart, 68, of 707 North Ninth Street, Mebane died at his residence on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 6:48 p.m. following a brief illness.

He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Dorothy Bradsher Hart, who survives and the son of Roy Hart and Mozelle Phillips Hart, both deceased. He retired from Western Electric and worked part time at Mebane Graham Lake. He was a founding member of the AT&T; Family Federal Credit Union and member of the Pioneer Club. Mr. Hart was a former Boy Scout leader, a past Board member of Piedmont Health System Agency and past State Director of C.O.P.E. He was of the Christian faith.

In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Terri Hart Andrews and husband, John of Graham and Miss Traci Hart of Graham; three sons, Mr. Jay Hart of Wilmington, Mr. Jeremy Hart of Mebane and Mr. Joshua Hart of Boone; three grandchildren, Kristen Ellington of Graham, Kyle Hart of Wilmington and Abby Andrews of Graham; and a brother-in-law, Mr. Larry Bradsher of Mebane.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Howard Hart.

The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Graham on Friday, July 17, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. by Rev. Steve Braswell. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Graham on Friday from 10 until 11 a.m. prior to the service. Other times they will be at the residence.

DAVID THOMAS OSBORNE
David Thomas Osborne, 61, of 320 Martin Luther King Boulevard, Siler City, died Thursday, February 16, 2012 at his residence. Mr. Osborne was born August 18, 1950 in Middletown, Ohio, the son of Charles Richard and Marilyn Allen Osborne.

David was the torch bearer for the Special Olympics and the group home representative for the North Carolina House of Representatives. He played soccer and baseball at Campbell College and loved to dance. David was preceded in death by his step-father, Martin Freed and his father, Charles Osborne. David was loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

Mr. Osborne is survived by his mother, Marilyn Allen Freed.

A graveside memorial service was held Monday, February 20, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Chatham Memorial Park, 13260 Hwy 64 West, Siler City with Father James Fukes OFM officiating. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the entire staff of the group homes, particularly David Welch.

ELEANOR WILSON THOMAS
Mrs. Eleanor Wilson Thomas, 95, died February 18, 2012 at Twin Rivers Independent Living in Pittsboro.

Mrs. Thomas was born July 16, 1916 in Orange County, NC, a daughter of Robert Lee Wilson and Blennie Clark Wilson. Mrs. Thomas loved her family; she also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, cooking and sewing. She liked being outdoors and tending her garden. Described as a “bridge shark”, Mrs. Thomas reveled in playing bridge and was a member of several bridge clubs. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and John Gee of Greensboro, Roxie and Andy Hardy of Wilmington; grandchildren, Lisa (Andy) Blair and Thomas (Jennifer) Leary, all of Greensboro; Karen (Shawn) McCall and Joel (Leigh) Hardy, all of Wilmington; six great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Vance, Jackson, Lucas, Emory and Yates; and sister, Ann Lloyd of Durham.

Mrs. Thomas was predeceased by her husband, William Benjamin Thomas.

The service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Eleanor Wilson Thomas was held at 2 o’clock Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Interment followed in the Mt. Zion U.M.C. cemetery. Friends visited with the family from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Special thanks to Dr. James Holt and Jane of Hospice for their kind and loving care. Also our gratitude to her caregivers Lisa, Regina, and Missy. Also, special thanks to Bob Harris.
