ROSE REITZEL “RED” PARRISH

Mr. Rose Reitzel “Red” Parrish, 81, a resident of Siler City and a former resident of the Deep River community in High Point died Friday February 2, 2012 in Chatham Hospital in Siler City. Mr. Parrish was born in Guilford County, the son of Rose Ethelbert and Mamie Lavada Morris Parrish. He was a member of the graduating class of 1949 at Jamestown High School. He was a dairy farmer all of his life and trained horses for steeple jumping and fox hunting for Dan Whitaker who was Master of the Sedgefield Hunt Club. Mr. Parrish was a member of the Siler City Church of Christ. He was married on December 23, 1948 to the former Mary Frances Allred who preceded him in death on February 1, 2001. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Hope Parrish Tillitson, Frances Parrish Goodson and brother, Henry Clay Parrish.

Surviving is one daughter, Shirley Frances Parrish of Zebulon; one son, Robert “Bob” Reitzel Parrish of Dunn; two brothers, Tommy Parrish of Trinity and Delmer Parrish of Thomasville, numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel conducted by minister Neal Fain. Interment followed in Guilford Memorial Park. The family received friends at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Any memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.

EUNICE MAE SHEPARD

Crockett, VA – Eunice Mae Shepard, age 86, of 711 Crockett Road, Crockett, VA. died Sunday, February 5, 2012 at Wythe Community Hospital.

Service will be held Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Sandy Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Marc Sanders officiating. Visitation was held Wednesday, February 8, 2012 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City.

Mrs. Shepard was born in Sampson County, NC on December 1, 1925. She attended church during her prior residential stay in Bear Creek at Sandy Branch Baptist Church. She enjoyed the coast, mountains and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Willard Shepard of Virginia; sons, Ron Shepard of North Carolina, Keith Shepard of Georgia and Wally Shepard of Minnesota. She is preceded in death by brothers, Liston Smith and Harold Smith. She is survived by nieces Javetta Clark and Jennifer Thomas of North Carolina; nephew, Tony Smith of North Carolina. She is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City is handling the arrangements.

TRACY DAWN TATE
Siler City – Tracy Dawn Tate died on January 28, 2012 at her residence. She was born in Davidson County on January 24, 1984.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, with the Rev. Bobby Shutt officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Tracy was preceded in death by her sister, Krystal Lynn Tate; uncle, David Tate; paternal grandmother, Carrie Tate Tosh; maternal grandparents, Winston C. Holland and Edna W. Holland.

She is survived by daughter, Alyssa Ortiz of Thomasville; two sons, Cameron and Nicholas Ortiz of Pulaski, VA.; father of Tracy’s children, Robert Ortiz of Chicago, IL, the one she loved and held dearest to her heart from the day she met him until the day the Lord took her home. She was also survived by her parents, Johnny and Vickie Tate; two sisters, Teresa Lynn Scott of Siler City, Tonya Hornaday of Greensboro; god-parents, Ashley and Kenneth Hall, Logan, Lyndsey, Karsyn and Ryan all of Pittsboro; special aunt, Julie Fullen; special aunt and uncle, Rev. James and Linda Martin; aunt and uncle, Carol and Marvin Tate of Lexington, cousins and aunts, Tia, Kayla, Brandon and Keenan Tate of Lexington, Bobby, Tiffany, Buster and Beronica of Thomasville; aunt and uncle to Tracy’s kids, Raymond and Nickie, two cousins and Cody Ortiz; brother-in-law, Jeffrey Scott of Siler City; nieces, Yasmine and Madison Scott of Siler City. Survivors also include a very special friend and dearest person to her heart, mother-in-law, Diane Ortiz of Miami, Florida; and numerous other relatives and friends in Thomasville.

Tracy touched a lot of peoples’ lives and loved her family more than anything, especially grandmother Carrie.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home is assisting the family.

LECY M. ALSTON

Ms. Lecy M. Alston, 65, of Durham died Saturday, (02-21-2012) at her home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday (01-25-2012) at 1 p.m. at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev. Anthony Davis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Ms. Alston was a graduate of Horton High School and Deshazor Beauty School and was a licensed cosmetologist. She was a member of Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church.

Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Ruth Alston of Pittsboro; brother, Johnie London Alston of Pittsboro; sisters, Elna Alston Smith, Cynthia Alston Suggs, both of Durham, Annette Alston of the home; adopted children, Kendra Smith of Richmond, VA and K. T. Jones of the home.

ANNIE E. TAYLOR
Mrs. Annie E. Taylor, 90, of Moncure died Monday (01-23-2012) at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday (01-27-2012) at 3 p.m. at Liberty Chapel Church with Rev. Norman Bryant officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Taylor was a member of Liberty Chapel Church where she served at a member of the deacon board and the usher board. She was also a member of the C. Wesley Samuels #664 order of the Golden Circle, Eastern Star, and G. Wesley Allen Assembly #324.

Surviving are her children, Burnice Taylor of Durham, Helen Alston of Pittsboro, Jerry Taylor of Moncure, Harold Taylor of Moncure, Maurice Taylor of Winston-Salem, Michael Perdy of Baltimore, MD; sisters, Carrie Scott of Brooklyn, NY, Elsie Dill of Washington, DC, Corene Richardson of Sarasota, FL; 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

MICHAEL GROSS
Michael Gross, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, saw life through a different lens. His beautiful soul departed this earth on January 21, 2012.

This gifted photographer and artist taught those he knew to see the little things; to appreciate the beauty all around us; to find glory in the fall of light on a child’s face.

Michael’s kind, generous and caring nature was always evident in the way he treated children, animals and strangers who quickly became friends.

His smile and laughter were cherished by all who knew him.

He leaves behind thousands of photos, hundreds of memories, dozens of friends and one family who will miss him always.

Funeral services were January 23, 2012, at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society, American Lung Association or local Humane Society.

BERTIS ELMER MOORE
Bertis Elmer Moore, 81, of 491 Elmer Moore Road, Bear Creek died Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Universal Health Care Of Ramseur.

Mr. Moore was born September 17, 1930 in Chatham County, the son of Elmer and Annie Bell (Beaver) Moore. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War and a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church. He was a cattle farmer and owner/operator of the Old Place Restaurant. Bertis was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Moore; brothers, Aster, John Albert, Thomas Elbridge and Jack Moore and a sister, Kathleen Moore Cook.

He is survived by one daughter, LuAnne Moore of Bear Creek; one son, Todd Moore of Siler City; one brother, Claiborne Moore and wife, Joyce of Henderson, KY; granddaughters, Laura Collins and husband, Chad of Bear Creek, Stephanie Moore of Bear Creek; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral was held Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, 715 Sandy Branch Church Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Marc Sanders, Rev. Val Chadwick and Rev. Darrell Williams officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

ANNIE RUTH GARNER ZIGLAR
Annie Ruth Garner Ziglar, 92, of 260 Village Lake Road, Siler City died Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Coventry House of Siler City.

Mrs. Ziglar was born in Lee County on February 26, 1919, the daughter of Efland and Sarah (Maness) Garner. She was a graduate of Siler City High School and Wingate College. A former resident of Newport News, Virginia, she was a member of Noland Memorial United Methodist Church. She was the first woman assigned as payroll clerk for the Newport News ship yard, a position she held for over forty years. Ruth was a sports fan and enjoyed playing golf. She also enjoyed reading. She was preceded in death by her husband, Phil F. Ziglar in 1999 and a brother, Efland Garner, Jr.

Survivors include one sister, Virginia Lupton of Siler City; nieces and nephews, Rennee’ Fields and husband, Steve, Mitchell Gurley and wife, Cindy, Keith Gurley, Amanda Gurley, Amber Teague and husband, Jeff; and special friends, Charles and Florence Turner.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, January 31, 2012 in Newport News, Virginia.

Smith & Buckner is assisting the family with local arrangements.

SAMUEL OLIVER JOHNSON
Samuel Oliver Johnson entered his eternal heavenly home on Sunday, January 29, 2012 at the age of 87. Born March 20, 1924, he was the son of Robert Lee and Maude Tucker Johnson. A lifelong residence of Chatham County, he was a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church and worked for most of his life in the poultry industry. He was an Army Veteran of WW II. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Samuel was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Johnson; a sister, Lucille Cheek; and a grandson, Jeffrey Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lucille Dark Johnson; one son, Edward L. Johnson and wife, Vickie of Siler City; two daughters, Linda Kay Johnson of Siler City, Carol J. Deaton and husband, Don of Siler City; grandchildren, Michael Johnson and wife, Carolina of Charlotte, Rynn Nicks and husband, Luke of Snow Camp, Haley Cox and husband Steven of Coleridge, Jill Oates and husband, Chad of Siler City, Karen Asbill and husband Darren of Erect; great-grandchildren, Jase Glenn Nicks, Lawson Gregory Cox, Nicolas Samuel Johnson, Emily Taylor Oates, Amber Rae Oates, Morgan Leanne Asbill, Jacob Max Asbill; and sister-in-law, Polly Johnson.

The family received friends Tuesday, January 31, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, other times at the home of his son, Edward Johnson, 1889 Wrenn Smith Road, Siler City.

Services were held Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church, 5345 Airport Road, Bear Creek with Rev. Dwight Jenkins and Rev. Sam Talley officiating. Burial followed at Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

Memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1414 E. Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

ROBERT LINCOLN GOODWIN, JR.

Robert Lincoln Goodwin, Jr., 76, of 1836 Devils Tramping Ground, Bear Creek died Saturday, January 28, 2012 at his home.

Mr. Goodwin was born March 7, 1935 in Apex, the son of Robert Lincoln and Margaret Johnson Goodwin, Sr. He was a retired construction worker, loved hunting, going to the beach and was a baseball sport fan. Robert was a member of the AKC and enjoyed breeding beagle dogs.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Carolyn Hall Goodwin; one son, Ronald Lincoln Goodwin of Annapolis, MD; twin daughters, Sharon Goodwin Hensley of Asheboro, Karen Dawn Goodwin of Centreville, MD; two grandchildren, Caroline Grace and Zane Robert Goodwin; and a sister, Amanda Goodwin of Apex.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 31, 2012 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, 715 Sandy Branch Church Road, Bear Creek with Rev. J. R. Bouldin officiating.

Memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1414 E. Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

LEE CARRICK EMERSON
Lee Carrick Emerson, 88, of Bear Creek died Sunday, January 29, 2012 at Blue Ridge Health Care Center, Raleigh.

Mr. Emerson was born January 27, 1924 in Chatham County, the son of William B. and Rosa Bell (Wilkinson) Emerson. He was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, choir member and Sunday School teacher. Lee was a retired supervisor for Perdue Farms. Lee was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Raymond Louis Emerson.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mannie (Dunn) Emerson of the home; one son, Garry L. Emerson and wife, Legina of Bear Creek; two brothers, William T. Emerson of Charlotte, James I. Emerson of Burlington; grandsons, John Emerson and wife, Shannon of Bear Creek, and James Emerson of Bear Creek.

The family received friends Wednesday, February 1, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral will be Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Bear Creek with Rev. Marc Sanders and Rev. Val Chadwick officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

MARY WOOD BASTIN
Mary Wood Bastin, formerly of Chatham County died Monday, (01-09-2012) in Pueblo, Colorado.

A memorial service was held at the Primrose Retirement Community in Pueblo.

Mrs. Bastin was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1934, was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and a member of the Chapel Hill Society of Friends. She was a member of the Chatham County Transportation Advisory Committee, Chatham County Chamber of Commerce, Siler City Rotary Club, Siler City Merchants Association and Pittsboro Merchants Association. She was founder and first president of the Chatham Citizens for Effective Communication.

Survivors include sons, Stuart Bastin of Pueblo, Colorado, Alan Bastin of Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the ALS Association, 7403 Church Ranch Blvd (Suite 109), Westminster, CO 80021.
