MARY HELEN STUTTS

Mary Helen Stutts, 71, of Siler City, died Monday, (04-25-2011) at her residence.

The funeral will be Thursday, (04-28-2011) at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Jimmy Gray and Dan Stoupe officiating. Burial will follow in Gaines Grove Cemetery.

Ms. Stutts was born February 3, 1940, the daughter of Addison and Mattie Thelma Gaines Stutts. She was a native of Chatham County, attended Gaines Grove Primitive Baptist Church, and was employed by Chatham Trades for 29 years. She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by four sisters, Mildred G. Hart, Blanche S. Birchett, Alice S. Frazier, all of Siler City, Virginia S. Birchett of Mebane; and brother, Ralph Gaines of Asheboro.

FRANCES DAVIS DUNN

Frances Davis Dunn, 88, of Siler City died Tuesday, (04-26-2011) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.

A graveside service will be held Friday, (04-29-2011) at 2 p.m. at Goldston United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Don Davidson officiating.

Mrs. Dunn was born November 19, 1922, the daughter of Walter and Lula Graham Johnson. She had been employed by Webster Poultry in Pittsboro and was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by one sister, Mary Florence Scott of Bear Creek.

The family will receive friends Thursday, (04-28-2011) from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

BETTY LUCK THOMAS

Betty Luck Thomas, 76, of Siler City died Sunday, April 24, 2011 at Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

Mrs. Thomas was born January 24, 1935, the daughter of William Fredrick and Caroline (McNeil) Luck. She was a native of Moore County and a seamstress, having worked at Tie Rite, A. J. Schneierson and Sons, Siler City and Ardin Carvet of Ramseur. Betty was a member of Brookdale Baptist Church. She loved her grandchildren, cooking, reading, going to the beach, sewing, working in her flower garden and doing yard work. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy L. Thomas, five brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by one son, Fred L. Thomas and wife Jennifer of Siler City; two daughters, Teresa Thomas Wright and husband Zebbie of Siler City, Lisa Thomas Melby and Mike Goldston of Sanford; one sister, Sarah Fulton of Sanford; grandchildren, Robyn Thomas and finace, Jonathan Craven, Erik Melby, Sarah Wright, Georgia Melby; and a special sister-in-law, Evlyeen Luck of Deep River.

The family received friends Tuesday, April 26, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. At other times the family was at the home of Fred and Jennifer Thomas, 30 Lambert Chapel Road, Siler City. The funeral was held Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Brookdale Baptist Church, 1133 West Third Street, Siler City, with Rev. Christopher St. Jean and Rev. Walter Jones officiating. Burial followed in Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

ANN ELIZABETH Von GRUENIGEN

Ann Elizabeth VonGruenigen, 77, of Siler City, NC, died on April 12, 2011 in a motor vehicle accident in Chapel Hill, NC.

She was born January 11, 1934 in Sandusky, Ohio to the late Wade Wendton Dauch and Elizabeth (Fiesinger) Dauch Pierce. Ann graduated from Sandusky High School, attended Ohio Weslyan and obtained her bachelors and masters degrees in English from Bowling Green State University. She began her teaching career at Huron High School in Huron, Ohio and was then a Professor of English at St. Mary’s College in Raleigh, NC and later a professor of Engineering English at North Carolina State University where she retired in 1998. She is the author of several books used in Engineering classes.

Ann loved to travel and for two summers in the early 1960’s, she managed a hotel and pub in Bourton-on-the-Water, England.

In 1974 Ann bought a farm in Siler City, NC where she raised beef cattle and horses and was still running the farm by herself until her death. The farm was the central part of her life and she loved caring for all her animals.

She was an active member of many animal rights and nature conservancy organizations and a patron of the arts, most especially opera.

Ann is survived by her son Wade Brown, daughter Mary Ann Bumbera, sister Mary Davis and nieces and nephews.

Services are to be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Siena Hotel, 1505 E. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 with celebration of life following.

AUSTIA DAVIS LAMBE

Austia Iola Lambe, 92, of 814 Sunny Slope Road, Bear Creek died Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.

Mrs. Lambe was born August 29, 1918, the daughter of William and Flossie May (Emery) Davis.

She was a native of Warren County, Tennessee and a homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church and a former member of Brush Creek Baptist Church. Austia was an avid quilter and seamstress and was preceded in death by her husbands, William Hoyt Blackwood and Clyce Lambe.

She is survived by one daughter, Doris Blackwood Hatfield and husband, Gerald of Bear Creek; one grandson, William Anderson "Andy" Hatfield and wife, Sherrie of Bear Creek; one granddaughter, Tammy Teague and husband, Jeff, of Siler City; three great-grandsons, Zachary Lee Brown, William Avery Hatfield and Jesse Austin Hatfield; one step-daughter, Rachel Lambe Cheek of Asheboro; one sister, Ola Davis Thurman of Staley; and two brothers, Edward Davis and wife, Lona of Ridge Top, TN, Aubra Davis and wife, Billie Faye of Bennett; ten step- grandchildren, eleven step great-grandchildren, 14 step-great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Tuesday, April 26, 2011 from 6-8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, 5946 Pleasant Grove Church Road, Bennett with Rev. Mark Strickland and Rev. Edward Brown officiating. Burial followed in the Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

JULE BRYAN HACKNEY

Jule Bryan Hackney, 82, formerly of Moncure, died peacefully in the Shallotte home of her daughter and son-in-law on Sunday, April 24, 2011. She was employed with Federal Spinning Corporation in Sanford from 1959 until 1984.

Ms. Hackney is survived by the daughter, Mary Margaret Saffos and husband Dean; one sister, Pat Lyles Drury and husband Walt of Sanford; two nephews, Charlie T. Lyles and wife Tina of Atwatter, CA, and John W. Lyles and wife Tana of Warrenton.

CYNTHIA “CINDY” EVERETT SCOTTEN

Cynthia "Cindy" Everett Scotten, 56, of Bear Creek died Monday, (04-11-2011) at her residence.

The funeral was held Friday, (04-15-2011) at 2 p.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Al Martin officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Scotten was born June 7, 1954 in Goldsboro in Wayne County, the daughter of Clifton L. Everett and Ina Marie (Small) Johnson. She was a 1976 graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and employed as a dental hygienist.

She is survived by her husband, John "Scotty" Scotten; daughter, Cassadi Scotten Walden of Chapel Hill; parents, Ina Marie (Small) and Bunky Johnson of Jacksonville, FL; and brother, Curtis Gene Everett of Jacksonville, Florida.

Memorials may be made to Brush Creek Baptist Church, 5345 Airport Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207.

BETTY WILSON PURVIS

JOHN Betty Wilson Purvis, 77, of Bennett, died Wednesday, (04-13-2011) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, (04-16-2011) at Beulah Baptist Church with Dr. Neal Jackson, Rev. Robert Kidd, Rev. Michael Fulp, and Rev. Phillip Nelson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Purvis was a Moore county native, the daughter of the late Clarence and Seagle Kidd Wilson and former librarian in the school system.

Survivors include her husband, Rev. Robert “Bob” Purvis of the home; daughter, Sharon Scott of Highfalls; sons, Steve Purvis of Garner, Greg Purvis of Bear Creek; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

DALE COBLE EDWARDS

Dale Coble Edwards, 89, of Siler City died Thursday, (04-14-2011) at the Hospice Home of High Point.

The funeral was held Sunday, (04-17-2011) at 2 p.m. at Moon's Chapel Baptist Church, with Rev. Scott Faw officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Edwards was born in Alamance County, January 13, 1922, the daughter of Ezekiel and Retta (Williams) Coble. She was a member of Moon's Chapel Baptist Church, and a caterer, known for making wedding cakes. Dale was preceded in death by her husband, Glosson Ross Edwards; son, Garry H. Edwards, and granddaughter, Laura Edwards.

Survivors include sons, Barry Edwards of Siler City, Roger Glosson Edwards of Huntersville; daughter, Sharon E. Burton of Winston-Salem; thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

R. DWIGHT HALL

R. Dwight Hall, 66, of Gibsonville, died Friday, (04-15-2011) at VA Medical Center, Durham.

The funeral was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bobby Shutt officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Mr. Hall was born January 17, 1945, the son of Dock Edward and Ruby (Wilson) Hall. He was a native of Guilford County, of the Baptist faith, a retired grading foreman with Apac in Florida and a Marine Veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Keith Bryant Hall and granddaughters, Logan Taylor Hall and Lindsay Hall.

Survivors include his wife, Jewel (Teague) Hall; four sons, Kenneth Dwight Hall of Graham, Jeff Scott Hall of Gibsonville, Robert Craig Hall of Graham, Timothy Lee Hall of Haw River; brothers, Robert M. Hall of Austell, GA, and Raymond Earl Hall of High Point.

Memorials may be made to American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060.

JOHN BUXTON “JB” SHAW

Mr. John Buxton “JB” Shaw, Jr., 83, of Pittsboro died Sunday, (04-17-2011) at UNC Hospital in chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, (04-20-2011) from the graveside at Center United Methodist Church Cemetery with Reverend John Varnum presiding. Friends visited with the family from 10–11 a.m. at the cemetery

Mr. Shaw was born July 11, 1927 in Alamance County, the son of JB Shaw, Sr. and Sarah Newlin Shaw. He was a graduate of Eli Whitney School. He worked for 30 years for Webster Poultry, and ran a large poultry farm after retiring from Webster’s.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Campbell Shaw; daughter, Linda Shaw (Boodman) of Snow Camp; sons, Jim Shaw and John Shaw, both of Moncure; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

INFANT MADISON BLAIRE DOWDY

Madison Blaire Dowdy, Pittsboro, infant, born and died Saturday, (04-16-2011) at U.N.C. Hospitals.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Survivors include her mother, Candice Dowdy of Pittsboro; father, Ray Lewis of Bear Creek; grandparents, Laura Dowdy of Pittsboro, Robert Phillips of Sanford, and Randy and Karen Lewis of Bear Creek.
