JOHN CALVIN MARLEY

John Calvin Marley, 88, of Siler City, died Saturday, (03-26-2011) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation Center.

Graveside services, with military rites, were held Tuesday, (03-29-2011) at 2 p.m. at Chatham Memorial Park, with Tim Gessner officiating.

Mr. Marley was born October 13, 1922, the son of James A. and Iler (Kelly) Marley. He was a native of Chatham County, and a retired furniture employee, having worked at Bassett Furniture and Chatham Novelties. John was an Army veteran of WW II, and was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Wright Marley.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy M. Hill of Snow Camp; son, James (Jimmy) L. Marley of Siler City; three grandchildren and five great-grand-children.

Memorials may be made to the Food Pantry, 126 Village Lake Road, Siler City, NC. 27344

BARBARA COPELAND HORTON

May 22, 1932 ~ March 27, 2011

Barbara Copeland Horton, 78, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 27, 2011. She showed strength, courage, and a positive outlook during her extended battle with lymphoma.

Barbara was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her devotion to her family and her church was evident as many benefited from her God given talent of hospitality. She enjoyed sharing her delicious home-cooked food served in her home, with neighbors, and in her church. Many will remember the delicious icicle pickles she made to serve at the church barbeques. She was an award-winning seamstress as well as an avid gardener.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Palmer and Maggie Copeland, and her son Barry Jackson Horton.

Left to cherish Barbara’s memory is her loving husband of 59 years, Ernest Terri Horton; a daughter, Angela Horton Joyner and husband, David; a daughter-in-law, Terri Horton; grandchildren, Seth Horton and wife, Katie, Aaron Horton and wife, Heather, Alyson Joyner Shumate and husband, Jordan, Ryan Joyner and wife, Jessica; and great granddaughters, Willow Horton and Lily Grace Horton. She also leaves behind a sister, Jeannine Dollar, a sister, Sharon Martin and husband Craig; a brother, Ronald Copeland and wife, Jean, all of Apex; a sister-in-law, Maple Cross, of Portsmouth, Ohio; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

The family will receive family and friends on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Bells Baptist Church in Apex from 6-8 p.m. A service to celebrate her awe-inspiring life will be held Friday, April 1, 2011 at Bells Baptist Church at 11 a.m. A private interment will be at the Bells Baptist Church Cemetery.

Flowers are welcome or the family requests that memorial contributions be made either to the Bells Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Expansion Fund, 1274 Farrington Road, Apex, NC 27523, or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, North Carolina Chapter, 401 Harrison Oaks Boulevard, Cary, NC 27513.

DOROTHY “DOT” ROBINSON PURVIS

Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Robinson Purvis, 83, of 4278 Chatham Street, Bennett, died Thursday, March 24, 2011 at First Health Moore Regional in Pinehurst.

Graveside funeral service and burial was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Neal Jackson officiating.

Mrs. Purvis was a Gaston County native and daughter of the late Arther L. “Pop” and Mary Summey Robinson. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and retired from Collins and Aikman in Siler City.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. B. Purvis, sons, Joe, Larry, Boyd and daughter, Cindy Shaw, two brothers and a sister.

Survivors include daughters, Brenda Gilliland and husband Ethan of Bennett, Janet Clark and husband Harold of Whispering Pines; brother, Charles “Buddy” Robinson of Robbins; sister, Lorena Brown of Robbins; three grandchildren, two step-grand-children, six great-grand-children, four step-great grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild.

The family was at Joyce-Brady Chapel, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2011 and other times at the home of Ethan and Brenda Gilliland, 2675 Bernard Purvis Road, Bennett.

Memorials should be directed to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, P.O. Box 78960, Phoenix, Az. 85062-8960.

PATRICIA FARRELL JACQUES

Patricia Farrell Jacques, 57, of Pittsboro, died Wednesday (03-16-2011) at her home.

It was Pat’s desire for cremation with a private burial, with no visitation.

Mrs. Jacques was born in Lee County January 8, 1954, a daughter of Maxine Cook Farrell and Roscoe M. Farrell, Sr. She was involved with Pittsboro Relay for Life, the Chatham County Council on Aging and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of Pittsboro United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed working with the Women’s Annual Bazaar. She was preceded in death by her mother, Maxine Farrell.

Survivors include husband, Robert “Robin” Jacques; son, Rob; father, Roscoe Farrell; sister, Janet Farrell; and brother, Roscoe Farrell.

Memorial contributions may be directed to either the Chatham County Council on Aging, PO Box 715, Pittsboro, NC 27312; Pittsboro United Methodist Church, PO Box PO Box 716, Pittsboro, NC 27312; or Pittsboro Relay for Life, PO Box 874, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

RUBY JOHNSON ABEE

Ruby Johnson Abee, 78, of Winston- Salem, formerly of Siler City, died Saturday, (03-19-2011) at the Brian Center in Lexington.

funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Monday, (03-21-2011) in Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Marshall Tallent officiating. Burial followed in the Loves Creek Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Abee was born April 29, 1932, the daughter of Eulas and Lillie (Elmore) Johnson. A native of Chatham County, she was of the Pentecostal faith and retired from AT&T. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Albert Abee.

She is survived by sisters, Margaret Hough of Siler City, Doris Tallent of Yadkinville, June Easter of Siler City; brothers, Rexford Johnson of Elon, Roland Johnson of North Wilkesboro, and Paul Johnson of Burlington.

EDNA MARTHA HILL WILKIE

Edna Martha Hill Wilkie, 85, of Siler City died Friday, (03-18-2011) at her residence.

funeral service was held Monday, (03-21-2011) at 2 p.m. at Providence Independent Methodist Church with Rev. Brian Caldwell, Rev. Richard Farmer and Rev. Josh Conrad officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Wilkie was born November 28, 1925, the daughter of Luvia Richard and Laura (Phillips) Hill. She was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and member of Providence Independent Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lacy Wilkie; her parents; sisters, Thelma Nobles and Dorothy Horne; brothers, Wade, Robert, Clayton and Harvey Hill.

Survivors include daughters, Jeanette Morris and Mary Lois Lemons, both of Siler City; sons, Rick Wilkie of Stoneville, Eddie Wilkie of Siler City; eight grandchildren; seven great-grand-children and one great-great- grandson.

Memorials may be made to Providence Independent Methodist Church, 905 Providence Church Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

CECIL LEE KELLY, JR.

Cecil Lee Kelly, Jr., 55, of Siler City died Saturday, (03-19-2011).

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Kelly was a native of Chatham County, born August 23, 1955, the son of Cecil Lee and Joyce Alice (McLaughlin) Kelly. He had worked with A. J. Schneierson as an office manager and attended Brookdale Baptist Church. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Surviving is one daughter: Shawn Kelly of Siler City.

EVELYN LYNN FAULK

Mrs. Evelyn Lynn Faulk, 88, of Pittsboro died Wednesday (03-16-2011) at Laurels of Chatham.

Funeral services were held Saturday (03-19-2011) at 3 p.m. at Mitchell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Kenneth M. Brooks officiating. Burial followed in the Lynn family cemetery.

AUDREY MAE JARRETT TROGDON

Audrey Mae Jarrett Trogdon, 80, of Asheboro, died Monday, (03-21-2011) at Randolph Hospital.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, (03-23-2011) at Edward Hill Friends Meeting with Rev. Frank Barrett and Todd Nance officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Trogdon was born April 4, 1930, the daughter of Adam and Alma Brady Jarrett. She was a native of Randolph County and a homemaker. Her husband, Joseph V. Trogdon, a son, Stephen Adam Trogdon and daughter, Ellen Trogdon Nance preceded her in death.

She is survived by a daughter, Karen T. Kidd and son, Joseph Trogdon, Jr., both of Asheboro; eight grandchildren, and fifteen great-grand-children.

The family received friends from 1–2 p.m. at Edward Hill Friends Meeting, prior to the service.

THOMAS WAYNE SMITH

Thomas Wayne Smith, 40, of Julian, died Thursday (03-17-2011) at his home.

A celebration of life was held at 4 p.m., Tuesday (03-22-2011) at Davis Funerals and Cremations Chapel in High Point.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Ledford High School and a past member of the U.S. Army National Guard. He was preceded in death by his father, William Thomas Smith.

Survivors include a daughter, Brittany of Thomasville; mother, Barbara Frazier of the home; sisters, Raye Carroll of Trinity, Cathy Smith Judge of Siler City; brothers, Steve Smith of Reidsville and Jeff McDaniel of Asheboro.

MARJORIE FIELDS McMANUS

Bear Creek: Mrs. Marjorie Fields McManus, 91, of 1315 Hoyt Scott Road died Saturday March 19, 2011 at Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.

There will be a memorial service for Mrs. McManus at Fair Promise United Methodist Church, where she was a member, at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 27, 2011 with Rev. Jonathan Mills officiating.

Mrs. McManus was a native of Guilford County and the daughter of the late Herbert and Elizabeth Campbell Fields. During her early years she was a secretary for a real estate company. For many years she and Melvin spent time in both Guilford and Chatham Counties, but for the past eleven years have resided in Chatham County.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. McManus was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl L. Greene and a son, Robert Leon Greene.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Melvin McManus of the home; daughters, Sandra Greene Wayt and husband Merritt of Greensboro, Edith McManus Neeves and husband Mack of Roanoke, VA, Ann McManus Bonagura and husband Mark of Kernersville; son, Dr. John Greene and wife Therese of Overland Park, Kansas; eleven grandchildren and six great-grand-children.

The McManus family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the staff of both Liberty and Randolph Hospice for the loving care received from both during the illness of Marjorie.

Marjorie was a body donor and her family honored her wishes. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Randolph Hospice, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, N.C. 27203; Liberty Home and Hospice, 401 East Third Street,. Siler City, N.C. 27344; or Fair Promise Methodist Church, 192 Glendon-Carthage Road, Goldston, N.C. 27252.

EDWARD JENNER ALLRED

Edward Jenner Allred, 93, of Siler City, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Wesley Long Community Hospital

A memorial graveside service for both Mr. and Mrs. Allred will be held in Siler City, the date is to be determined.

Mr. Allred was born April 22, 1917 in Randolph County to the late Burgess Milton and Annie Victoria Cox Allred. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Thelma Pendergrass Allred, who died on May 8, 2010, his brothers, Ray Herndon Allred and Elmer Lee Allred.

Mr. Allred grew up in Franklinville, NC. He retired from UNC Public Television where he was a TV Engineer for over 15 years. He was a World War II veteran and a member of the US Army Air Corp. Mr. Allred, a pilot, maintained his love of flying and was a private flight instructor for many years. He also earned his Amateur Radio License (Ham Operator) and spoke across the world under the call sign W4NHF. Guitar, songwriting and his family were his passions

He is survived by his daughters, Lou (Louise) A. Early and husband, Wallace L. Early of Reidsville and Marty (Martha) A. Keith and husband, Preston W. Keith of Greensboro.

There will no formal visitation at this time.
