GERALD MILTON WHITE, SR.

Raleigh – Gerald Milton White, Sr., born March 28, 1934, died March 1, 2011 at his home after an extended illness.

He was with the NC Highway Bridge Design Department for approximately 42 years, where he was an expert on Modified Lztex Concrete. Mr. White did a lot of special work on NC bridges, including the Green River Bridge in the NC mountains. He worked part-time with DOW out of Richmond, VA as a consulting engineer after retiring from the NCDOT. He had many friends nationally from bridge conferences and the ACI. Mr. White was a State Registered Engineer and Land Surveyor. He also served on the Soil and Water Board. Gerald ushered his church, Highland United Methodist, at the 8:30 a.m. service for many years. He also served as president of his Sunday School class – Fisher, Thompson, Jennings.

Mr. White is survived by his wife of over 57 years, Lula Bunker White; his two daughters, Jennifer Eichenberger and husband David; and Stacy White; four grandchildren, Ethan and Lauren Eichenberger, Jade and Nate White Mills; former son-in-law, Bruce Saunders; his aunt, Foye Mann; and many more family and friends.

Mr. White was predeceased by his two sons, Samuel Dennis and Gerald M. White, Jr. who died in his sleep at his parents’ home on January 9, 2011 due to a heart attack coming from an enlarged heart (inherited genetics) that caused Pulmonary Vascular Congestion and Edema. He was 38 years old, staying with his parents for a few months helping to look after his father. This was such a terrible loss to the family, especially to his father. Gerald, Sr. was also predeceased by a very special uncle, Ralph Riddle, who died at age 99 in 2010. They had many good times together.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 4, 2011, from Highland United Methodist Church, with visitation immediately following. A service of committal was held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ in Pittsboro, with interment in the church cemetery.

Flowers are welcome, but the family would appreciate memorials to Highland Church, 1901 Ridge Rd, Raleigh, NC 27607; Hanks Chapel Church, PO Box 366, Pittsboro, NC 27312; or to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607-6372.

The family wishes to thank his doctors and nurses; Dr. Lue, Marlene, Dr. Bertics, Bonnie, Dr. Reddy, Dr. Woellfer, Hospice of Wake Co., the neighbors, church family, relatives and friends, and his special daily care givers Rosalind Thompson, La Quinta Ellerbe, Andrea Eller and Trina Daniels.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service, Pittsboro.

FRANK FULTON ROBERTS

Frank Fulton Roberts was born February 20, 1917 and died February 20, 2011 in Florida at the age of 94. He was born in Siler City to George and Berta Fields Roberts, but lived most of his adult life in High Point, retiring to Lakeland, Florida in 1997.

He was a WW II Navy veteran, a fifty-year active Boy Scout leader and a barber by trade. Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Lee Roberts; two brothers, Harold and Billy Roberts and a granddaughter, Sharon Swofford.

He is survived by his daughter, Betsy Hunt and husband Rick of Charlotte, eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Gravesides services will be held Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City.

Arrangements are being made by Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

RACHEL DAWN BECK

Rachel Dawn Beck, 22, of 18831 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek, died Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg.

Ms. Beck was born July 5, 1988, the daughter of Ricky Thomas and Barbara (Colvin) Beck. She was born in Lee County, a graduate of Chatham Central High School in 2007 and Central Carolina Community College. Rachel was office manager of Piggly Wiggly in Pittsboro.

Survivors include her father, Ricky Thomas Beck; mother, Barbara Colvin Beck and John Simpkins, Jr. of Dayton, TN; one sister, Kathy "Nikki" Beck of North Myrtle Beach, SC; three brothers, Jody Thomas Beck of Bear Creek, Matthew Chestly Beck of Bear Creek, Adam Lewis Carroll of Fayetteville.

The family received friends Thursday, March 3, 2011 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and other times at the family home.

The funeral was held Friday, March 4, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 17721 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek, with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, 4217 Park Place Court, Glenn Allen, VA 23060; or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.

LEWELLYN (DORIS) BETTS

Lewellyn (Doris) Betts passed away on February 23, two years after being diagnosed with cancer. She was born July 15, 1953, in Columbia, SC, but grew up in Sanford, NC, where she attended its public schools. She was the daughter of the late District Judge Lowry M. Betts, and of Professor Doris W. Betts, Pittsboro, NC. She was married to Professor Thomas Mroz, Clemson, SC, who survives.

After graduating from Sanford Central High School she received her A.B. degree from UNC-Greensboro, where she was active in the dramatic arts. She was part of its theater troupe that took its performance of “The Orestia” by Aeschyles, to the Kennedy Arts Center in Washington, D.C. Later she worked both as actor and stage manager at Parkway Playhouse Theater in Burnsville, NC, and with various dinner theaters before settling in Washington, DC, where she became a champion duplicate bridge player, and managed Garrett’s bar in Georgetown.

In the early nineties she moved back to North Carolina and was employed as a grants specialist and business manager at the Carolina Population Center, UNC-Chapel Hill, where she met her future husband. They were married June 1996 at the Horace Williams House and lived in Chapel Hill. While in Chapel Hill she became a potter and attended the Penland School of Crafts in the North Carolina mountains. In 2007 she and her husband moved to Clemson, SC. There she served as vice president of the board of the Clemson Child Development Center.

Lewellyn is survived and loved by her husband, her mother, by brother David Lowry Betts and his wife Catherine Johnson Betts, Pittsboro, NC, and a niece, Anna Josephine Dendy Betts; by brother Erskine Moore Betts and his wife Mary Wilcox Betts, Apex, N.C., two nephews, Matthew Palmer Betts, and William Alston Betts; and by Ellen, Mary and Rowena Betts, Columbia, S.C; and Rowena B. Brockman, Fletcher, N.C. She is also survived by her husband’s family: Edmund Mroz, Sr. of Winchendon, MA; Edmund Mroz, Jr and wife Celia Shapiro, and nephew Nathaniel of Chestnut Hill MA; Elaine Mroz of Lunenburg MA; Carolyn and Frederick Sellars of Townsend, MA and nieces Emily and Althea and nephew Andrew; Richard Mroz of Bainbridge Island, WA and nephew Samuel; Gerald and Paula Mroz of Melrose, MA and nephews Nicholas and Matthew and niece Lydia; Francis and Maureen Mroz of Framingham and nieces Angela and Sarah and nephew Michael.

There will be two memorial services. The first will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday March 19 at the Pittsboro Presbyterian Church in Pittsboro, NC. The second memorial celebration will be from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday April 16 in the home she shared with Tom at 128 Ashley Road in Clemson, SC.

AXEL DAVID LEE GORDON

Axel David Lee Gordon, 3 months, of 1145 Dorsett Road, Siler City, died Monday, February 28, 2011. He was born November 6, 2010, the son of Timothy James and Jeannie (Burke) Gordon.

He is survived by parents, T.J. and Jeannie Burke Gordon of Siler City; grandmother, Sheila Roark of Siler City; grandfather, Anthony E. Burke of Ramseur; step-grandmother, Robyn Burke of Ramseur; paternal grandparents, Timothy E. and Geneva Everwine Gordon of Siler City; maternal great-grandparents, Jeannie and James Roark of Beckley, WV; paternal great-grandparents, Uless and Priscilla Gordon of Bear Creek; aunts, Amanda Gordon and Hannah Barth, both of Siler City; uncle, David Gordon of Siler City; uncle, Blade Burke of Ramseur; numerous aunts and uncles; numerous great aunts, uncles and cousins of West Virginia; and God Parents, Dallas Heaton and Crystal Oldham of Siler City.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 7, 2011 at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 2981 Hwy 42, Goldston, with Rev. Herman Brennan officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

PHILLIP LEWIS WALTON, SR.

Phillip Lewis Walton, Sr., 72, died March 5, 2011 among family in Greensboro. The son of King Phillip “Bootsie” Walton and Sophia Emma Tayman Walton, he was born on June 26, 1938 in Calvert County, MD.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Jennie Ellen Collins Walton, and daughter-in-law Lynn Briggs Milligan Walton.

Survived by wife of 18 years, Nancy Elaine Hawk Walton; sister, Anita Louise Walton Peacock; sons and daughters, Phillip Lewis Walton, Jr., Connie Ellen Walton Jenkins and husband James Alan Jenkins, Peggy Sue Walton Jenkins and husband Melvin Stacey Jenkins, Geneva Walton Matthews, Tania Rene Arroyo Jope & husband Nicholas Jope; Christian Conrad Salvador Arroyo and wife Melissa Anne Blanchard Arroyo, and Tyla Yvette Arroyo Olson and husband Nick P. Olson.

He is also survived by grandchildren, Derrick Wayne Walton, William Randy Walton, Samantha Marie Walton, Alexis Michelle Walton, Nora “Nunu” Walton, James Phillip Edward Jenkins, Eric William Lee Jenkins, Melissa Rebecca Yvonne Jenkins, Gene Michael Ray Jenkins, Jessie Dwayne Jenkins, Andrew Steven Jenkins, Ellen Nicole Jenkins, Michael Thomas Christian Matthews, Amanda Marie Matthews, Steven Phillip Christian Matthews, Zachary Edward Sasha Matthews, Emma Kate Arroyo, Bennett Salvador Arroyo, Casey Lee Olson, Katie Reneé Olson; ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He worked for Marlboro Auto Parts in MD, and at the Plant City, FL Water Department for many years. He coached Little League, raced stock cars, and loved animals. He most enjoyed spending time with his family, vacationing at the beach, baking, gardening, reading the Bible and singing hymns.

A memorial service will be held at the church of Christ at 1511 West Raleigh St., Siler City, NC 27344 on March 13, 2011 at 3 p.m. Donations can be made to the church of Christ toward funeral expenses, 919-663-3012.

JEWEL BEAMAN HEADEN

Mrs. Jewel Beaman Headen, 76, of Pittsboro, died Tuesday (02-22-2011) at UNC Hospitals.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, (02-26-2011) at Union Grove AME Zion Church in Bear Creek.

Mrs. Headen was born to the late Crosby Guthrie and Fannie Reaves, January 6, 1935 in Chatham County. She was educated in the Chatham County Schools, and was a member of Union Grove AME Zion Church.

Survivors include a son, Lewis Colden Headen of Sanford; daughters, Cora Brower of Bear Creek, Callie Cuthbertson of Ringold, VA, Jacqueline Alston of the home; sisters, Christine Emerson of Greensboro, Hazel Peoples of Bear Creek, Emma Pugh of Chapel Hill and Irene Davis of Greensboro.

TERRY DAVID WILSON

Terry David Wilson, 61, of Bennett, died Wednesday, (02-23-2011) at his home.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date. No visitation planned.

Mr. Wilson was a Chatham County native, a retired truck driver, and a member of Prosperity Friends Church.

There were no immediate survivors.

Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett assisted with arrangements.

JOSIE LUCILLE JOHNSON CAUDLE

Josie Lucille Johnson Caudle, 81, of Sanford died Thursday, (02-24-2011) at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.

The funeral was held Sunday, (02-27-2011) at 3 p.m. at South Fork Friends Meeting, with Rev. Billy Joe Brady officiating. Burial followed in church cemetery.

Ms. Caudle was born September 10, 1929, the daughter of Walter and Lillie Clapp Johnson. She was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and member of South Fork Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by Cecil Harold Caudle; her parents; brothers, Eugene "Bood" Johnson, Marvin "Pap" Johnson and sister, Pauline J. Guthrie.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen C. Culberson, of Sanford; son, Harold Caudle, of Siler City; four grandchildren, and four great-grand-children.

Memorials may be made to South Fork Friends Meeting, 359 South Fork-Bethel Road, Snow Camp, NC 27349.

DOROTHY MARIE HILL HORNE

Dorothy Marie Hill Horne, 91, of Siler City died Thursday, (02-24-2011) at Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.

The funeral was held Sunday, (02-27-2011) at 2 p.m. at Providence Independent Methodist Church with Rev. Ricky Wilkie and Rev. Brian Caldwell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery

Mrs. Horne was born February 26, 1919, the daughter of Luvia Richard and Laura Phillips Hill. She was a native of Chatham County, a member of Providence Independent Methodist Church and had worked at Hadley Peoples Manufacturing and in the laundry room at Brian Center Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dock Horne, sister, Thelma Nobles and brothers, Wade, Robert, Clayton and Harvey Hill.

She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Dillinger of Broadway; sons, Billy Wilson of Siler City, Jimmy Wilson of Greensboro; sister, Edna H. Wilkie of Siler City; four grandchildren, five great-grand-children, and two great-great grandchildren.

CLYDE THOMAS WEBSTER

Clyde Thomas Webster, 75, of Bear Creek died Saturday, (02-26-2011) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

The funeral was held Tuesday, (03-01-2011) at 2 p.m. at Bear Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Bob Wachs officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Webster was born April 16, 1935, the son of Roy S. and Della Beamon (Wilkie) Webster. He was a native of Chatham County, retired from the NC Department of Transportation and a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Clyde was one of the Founding Members of the Bonlee Fire Department where he held several positions and ranks. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Phillips Webster.

He is survived by one daughter, Sheila Webster Bass of Bear Creek; sons, Michael E. Webster of Bear Creek, and Stephen T. Webster of Siler City.

Memorials may be made to the Bonlee Fire Department, PO Box 236, Bonlee, NC 27213.

JIMMY MARLEY

Jimmy Marley, 56, of Pittsboro died Sunday, (02-27-2011) at his residence.

The family received friends Wednesday, (03-02-2011) from 12-1 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home. Graveside service was held Wednesday, (03-02-2011) at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, with Rev. Shelby L. Stephens officiating.

Mr. Marley was born February 6, 1955, the son of Julious Delbert and Wilma Faye Dodson Marley. He was a native of Chatham County, and a self-employed farmer and welder. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda Haning Marley and one brother, Michael Marley of Pittsboro.
