Mr. Justin Scot Alston, Age 26, of Greensboro died Saturday, January 17, 2004 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 2:00PM Thursday, January 22, 2004 at Southeast Baptist Church. Entombment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 9:00PM Wednesday evening at Forbis & Dick, North Elm Chapel.

Survivors include his mother, Gloria M. Alston of the home; maternal grandfather and step-grandmother, Edmund S. and Marie Maleski of Anchorage, Alaska; aunts, Ruth A. Forrest of Greensboro, Cheryl M. Bridwell (Wayne) of Virginia Beach, VA and Jeanne M. Atkins (Kelvin) of Kernersville and one uncle, Arville B. Alston (Helga) of DeRidder, Louisiana. There are many other relatives and a host of friends.

Mrs. Elizabeth Pike Hudson

Graveside services will be held 2:00PM Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at New Garden Cemetery.

Elizabeth Pike Hudson, 96, died Sunday, January 18, 2004 at Friends Homes Guilford where she had been a resident for the past thirteen years.

A graveside service will be at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, January 21, at New Garden Cemetery officiated by David Bills.

Mrs. Hudson was born in Chatham County and had been a resident of the Guilford College community since 1938. She was a member of New Garden Friends Meeting.

Her husband, Thomas Boyd Hudson, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sons, Russell Hudson, and wife, Jean of Greensboro, and Wayne Hudson, of Huntsville, AL; two sisters, Eula Beane, of Siler City and Anna Belle Cheek of Asheboro; five grandchildren, Lynne Bostic, of Winston-Salem, Cheryl Fox, of West End, Scott Hudson, of Charlotte, Ken Hudson, of Huntsville, AL, and Jennifer Hudson, of Tampa, FL. Seven great-grandchildren also survive her.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 1:45 pm, on Wednesday, prior to the graveside service at Forbis & Dick Guilford Chapel.

Funeral services will be held 2:00PM Friday, January 16, 2004 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

GREENSBORO – Jack McLean Fleming, age 88, of McLeansville died on January 14, 2004 at Wesley Long Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday January 16, 2004 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Internment will immediately follow at the church cemetery.

Jack Fleming was born on October 18, 1915 in McLeansville where he lived his entire life. He grew up on a dairy farm and delivered milk to Greensboro. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army and served in the European theater during World War II, where he earned three battle stars. Jack was a faithful member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church for 81 years. He was also a member of the Methodist Men of Mt. Pleasant and served on various church committees. Jack worked for 51 years at M. G. Newell Corporation as a field engineer. On March 12, 1985 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina Dairy Association. He was also a member of the McLeansville Wildlife Club.

Mr. Fleming is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Eleanor “Chris” Fleming, son Jack M. Fleming Jr. and wife Shirley, and daughter Judy Fleming all of McLeansville. He is also survived by four grandchildren Drew Fleming, Jacklyn Fleming, Travis Hathcock, and Justin Hathcock; one brother Dan Fleming of Florida, and two sisters Mildred Bray of McLeansville, and Margaret Price of Florida. He is preceded in death by his granddaughter Abbi Fleming.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:30 PM on Thursday, January 15, 2004 at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home on N. Elm St.

Memorials may be sent to Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Building Fund at 5120 Burlington Rd Greensboro NC 27405.

Mr. Samuel Charles Talbert

Funeral services will be held 11:00AM Saturday, January 17, 2004 at New Garden Friends Meeting. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Samuel Charles Talbert St., 96, of 6100 West Friendly Avenue, died January 14, 2004 at Friends Homes West. Mr. Talbert was born January 19, 1907 in Abbeville County, South Carolina to Joseph M. and Sallie Mathis Talbert. He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Scarborough Talbert. He was a retired grocer and real estate broker in the Guilford College community where he had lived since 1932. He was a member of New Garden Friends Meeting and the New Garden Men’s Brotherhood Sunday School Class. He was a trustee of the New Garden Cemetery Association for many years. He also served as the charter president of the Guilford College Lions Club. He attended the Citadel and Clemson University.

Surviving are daughters Elizabeth “Betty” Talbert Jackson and husband Rodney D. of Winston-Salem; Sara “Sally” Talbert Cannady and husband Thomas L. III and a son, Samuel Charles Talbert Jr. and wife Mary Kate of Greensboro. Grandchildren surviving are Kathleen Wrenn of Greensboro, Michael Cannady of Cary; Joseph Cannady of Westport, CT; David Cannady of Franklin, TN; James and John Jackson of Winston-Salem; Jeffrey Jackson of Canton, GA; S. Charles Talbert III and Jason Talbert of Greensboro; great-grandchildren Jay, Daniel, Thomas, Christopher and David Jackson, Sara Wrenn Cotrone, Matthew, Mary Ashley, Jennifer, Thomas and Joseph Wrenn, Megan, Justin and Anderson Cannady and one great-great-granddaughter, Anna Cotrone. A brother, J. Wallace Talbert of Greensboro also survives.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 11:00 at New Garden Friends Meeting with burial in New Garden Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mr. Talbert’s grandsons and Mr. David Wrenn. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9pm on Friday, January 16, 2004 at Forbis and Dick Guilford Chapel. Other times the family will be at the home of David and Kathy Wrenn, 501 Lindley Road.

The family suggests memorials to Friends Home, Inc., 6100 W. Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410 and/or New Garden Friends Meeting, 801 New Garden Road, Greensboro, NC 27410, or a charity of donor’s choice.

Mr. Joseph Rolland Whitley

Mr. Joseph Rolland Whitley, Jr. of Greensboro died Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at his residence.

Graveside services will be held 2:00PM Friday, January 16, 2004 at Providence Friends Cemetery.

Survivors include his sisters, Carolyn Wicker and Peggy Ridge both of Shelby, NC and brothers, Dowg Whitley of Altanta, GA, Garry Whitley of Greensboro and Jerry Whitley of Shelby, NC.

The family is being served by Forbis & Dick, Pleasant Garden Chapel.

Mr. Albert Dwayne Droege

Mr. Albert Dwayne “Al” Droege 54, of 5605 Wildrose Drive died Wednesday January 14, 2004 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 16, 2004 in Christ Community Church.

Al Droege was born in Seymour, Indiana on March 15, 1949 to the late Ralph and Dorothy Smith Droege. Al was a graduate of Clemson University where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was a sales representative with La-Z-Boy Furniture for 25 years and a member of Christ Community Church where he served as an Elder.

Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Candy Crane Droege of the home; two sons Drew Droege of Los Angeles, California and Garrett Droege and his fiancé Abbey Wade both of Wilmington; a brother Don Droege and his wife, Phoebe of Charlotte; two nieces Kristy Hawkins of Winston-Salem and Kim LeNeave of Charlotte.

The family will receive friends from 7 – 9 PM on Thursday evening at their home and from 10 – 11 AM on Friday at Christ Community Church.

Memorials may be made to Christ Community Church Building Fund, 369 Air Harbor Road, Greensboro, NC 27455.

Mrs. Sadie S. Vaughn, 85, of 3529 Cherry Lane died Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, January 16, 2004 at Forbis & Dick, North Elm Chapel. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Vaughn was a member of Reedy Fork Baptist Church where she was the Faith and Love Sunday School Class Teacher. She was a former member of Magnolia Street Baptist Church, an avid reader and enjoyed needlework, knitting and sewing. She was happiest when she was with her family

Survivors include her husband, Marshall Pershing Vaughn of the home; daughter, Kay V. Crawford and her husband, Bill of Browns Summit; grandchildren, Steven R. Crawford and his wife, Susie and Kelly C. Hamby and her husband, David and great grandchildren, Billy, Ben, Brad and Bailey Crawford, David Scott and Kay Marie Hamby.

Mrs. Vaughn is preceded in death by her parents, Carl Edgar and Beulah Oakes Sawyer and brother, W. Raymond Sawyer.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30PM Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Mrs. Joyce Oliver Venable

Mrs. Joyce Venable of Greensboro died Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at her residence.

A celebration of life will be held 2:00PM Friday, January 16, 2004 at Guilford Park Presbyterian Church.

Joyce is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, J.R. "Bo" Venable; daughter, Marti Randall and husband, Brian; son, Jim Venable and wife, Kim; grandsons, Chad Randall and wife, Jennifer, Aaron Randall, Wesley Venable and John Venable; brother, Leonard L. Oliver and wife, Ruth and two nieces and one nephew.

Forbis & Dick North Elm Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Robert L. Phillips, M.D.
SERVICE DETAILS: When: January 15, 2004 3:30 PM
A Memorial service will be held 3:30PM Thursday, January 15, 2004 at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Robert L. Phillips, M.D., age 78, died January 13, 2004 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital, following an automobile accident on September 17, 2003.

Surviving are wife, Linda F. Phillips of the home; daughter, Missie Dowdy and husband, Eric; sons, Eric, Kirk and Robin Phillips. He was the proud grandfather of Eliza, Zach, David, Scott, Ren, Sara Katelin and Jessie Phillips.

Funeral services will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Thursday, January 15 at 3:30PM. The family will receive visitors immediately following the Memorial Service.

Mr. James Harrison Lowdermilk

Funeral services will be held 2:00PM Thursday, January 15, 2004 at Calvary Bapatist Church. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park.

Mr. James Harrison Lowdermilk, 83, of 5337 Shoffner Road died Monday, January 12, 2004 at his residence.

Mr. Lowdermilk’s funeral will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 15, 2004 in Calvary Baptist Church with Reverend Terry Larsen and Dr. Thomas Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park.

James Lowdermilk was born in Guilford County on November 5, 1920 to the late Emsley and Florence Stack Lowdermilk. He was a retired real estate broker; a member of the NC Realtors Association; and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. Lowdermilk was a U. S. Navy Veteran of World War II; a member of VFW Post 121 and Disabled American Veterans – NC Chapter 20.

Survivors include his wife Agatha “Gaye” Lowdermilk of the home; two children J. Wayne Lowdermilk and Sue Lowdermilk Butner of McLeansville; sister Mrs. Marjorie Upright of Julian; four brothers Charles Lowdermilk of Greensboro, Homer Lowdermilk of Julian, Porter Lowdermilk of McLeansville, and Winburn Lowdermilk of Greensboro; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Lowdermilk was preceded in death by a daughter Deborah Anne Lowdermilk.

The family will receive friends from 7 – 8:30 PM on Wednesday evening at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street and other times at the residence.

Memorials may be made to either Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405 or to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 930 Knox Road, McLeansville, NC 27301.
