JOHN MOORE RUTH
John Moore Ruth, 90, passed away in the early morning of Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Washington Adventist Hospital in Tacoma Park, MD.
Mr. Ruth was born to the late Thomas Cook Ruth and Lorena Moore Ruth on May 26, 1924 in Chatham County, NC. He received a Doctorate of Science in Chemistry from The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and spent the early part of his life working on nuclear weapons projects in Oakridge, TN and Los Alamos, NM. He would eventually settle in College Park, MD, working in agricultural labs for the U.S. Government around Washington, D.C. John was a scholar who authored numerous papers and scientific articles. One of his finest achievements was serving as President of The American Chemical Society.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two brothers, “T.C.” Thomas Cook Ruth, Donald Ruth; his sister, Joy Ruth Burke; and his niece, Kay Peedin.
Survivors include his brother, Gilbert “Gib” Ruth and his wife Linda of Pittsboro; his niece, Sue Cagle and her husband Butch of Toms River, NJ; three great-nieces, Jennifer Bodnarchuk, Stephanie Cagle, Taylor Ruth Peedin; and a great-great-nephew, Nathan Bodnarchuk.
The family would like to convey their gratitude to Mr. Bill Eby and family for the many years of great friendship with John Ruth.
A funeral service for Mr. Ruth will be held graveside at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014 in the Moses-Ruth cemetery in Pittsboro.
MALCOM TALMADGE “PETE” RAY
Malcom Talmadge “Pete” Ray, 80, of Siler City, died Monday, June 9, 2014 at Universal Health Care of Ramseur.
Mr. Ray was born in Franklin County on July 10, 1933, the son of Bunny C. and Eva (Williams) Ray. He was retired from Goldkist Hatchery after 40 years of service as a manager. Pete was a member of the Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church where he had served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, usher and had worked with the Royal Rangers boys’ ministry. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, trips to the beach and mountains and time spent with his family. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alice (Glover) Ray; one daughter, Jeanette R. Stinson and husband Roy of Siler City; sons, Malcolm Danny Ray and wife Kay of Siler City, Dale Ray and wife Ann of Bear Creek; brother, Nelson Ray and wife Ruth of Pilot; six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
The family received friends Wednesday, June 11, 2014 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church, 17475 US 64 W, Siler City.
The funeral followed Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Mark Richardson officiating. Entombment will be in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

CAROL JOANNE BOWLING CHACON
Mrs. Carol Joanne Bowling Chacon, 54, of Carthage, died Tuesday (05-27-2014), in Sanford.
All services will be private.
She was born on October 4, 1959, to the late Russell Lawrence Bowling and Marjorie Currin Bowling. She was the manager of the Project Help Thrift Shop.
Survivors include her mother, Marjorie Currin Dickens of Sanford; brother, Mike Bowling of Sanford; sister, Patricia B. Rosser of Broadway; and half-sister, Rushell Bennie of Greenville, S.C.

W.L. “BILL” LASSITER
W. L. “Bill” Lassiter, 76, of Fayetteville, formerly of Sanford died at Cape Fear Valley Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, (05-28-2014).
A funeral service was held at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel at 12 noon on Friday (05-30-2014) with Chaplain Joel Cameron presiding. A private burial followed.
He was born in Moore County on July 7, 1937, to the late Leonard Lassiter and Clarice Matthews Lassiter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jessie Braddy. Mr. Lassiter was retired from Avondale as a supervisor.
Survivors include his son, Len Lassiter of Cameron; a daughter, Regina Thomas of Sanford; and two grandsons.
DENNIS RAY DIXON
Dennis Ray Dixon of Chatham County died at his home on Thursday, (05-22-2014).
Ray had worked on several dairy farms, with Terminix, and retired early from Goldkist Plant. He was the son of Kathleen J. Dixon and the late Griffin Dixon. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Kathy Foushee. Other survivors include his wife of 45 years, Kathy Breedlove Dixon of the home; children, Tammy Walker and David Dixon, both of Chatham County; one step-daughter, Angela Deal; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; siblings, Janice Inman, of Chatham County, Wendy Barber of Newport, Joey Dixon of Sanford; Valerie Nelson of Bear Creek, and Sandy Dixon of Goldston.
CARMEN ESTEFANY VILLATORO GUTIERREZ
Carmen Estefany Villatoro Gutierrez, 23, of Sanford, died Tuesday, (05-27-2014), at her home.
Funeral services were Saturday, (05-31-2014), at 12 noon at St. Stephen The First Martyr Roman Catholic Church with Father Robert Ippolito officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
Miss Gutierrez was born October 31, 1990, in El Salvadorto Jesus Villatoro and Carmen Zavala-Gutierrez. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, David F. Gutierrez and a sister, Clara Lopez-Gutierrez.
GARRY WAYNE WHEELER
Garry Wayne Wheeler of Pittsboro died Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Hospice Home of Alamance in Burlington.

JOHN HENRY COVINGTON
Pastor John Henry Covington, 73, of Pittsboro, died late Saturday, (05-31-2014).
A funeral service will held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, 05-03-2014), at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Elmore officiating. Burial followed at the Church Cemetery
John was born July 11, 1940 in Salisbury. He was the pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church for the last five years.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two sons, John and Jeffrey Covington.
He is survived by his wife, Tina Covington; sons, Johnathan Covington of Pittsboro, Mark Young of Lexington; daughter, Deborah Young of Youngsville; brothers, Jerry Covington of Knightdale, John R Covington of Vale; sisters, June and Judy; twelve grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
RICKIE WESLEY HALL
Mr. Rickie Wesley Hall, 65, of Sanford, died Thursday, (05-29-2014) at his home.
The funeral service was held Monday, (06-02-2014), at 11 a.m. at New Life Fellowship Church with Dr. Gail Dickens and Pastor Dale Sauls officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Hall was born in Lee County, on February 11, 1949 to the late William McKinley Hall and Ruby Douglas Hall. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife Sandra Thomas Hall, brother, William Hall and sister Margaret Douglas. Rickie was retired from Honeywell then worked for the Harnett County Department of Transportation. He was a member of God of New Beginnings Church, as well as worship leader.
Survivors include two daughters, Angela H. Beard of Fayetteville, Amanda Hall of Franklinton; sisters, Della Steward, Jackie Stack, Jean Hall, Kathy Jordan, all of Sanford, Donna Hall Borowiec of Richmond Hill, GA; and three grandchildren.
OSCAR PHILLIP “PETE” MARSH
Oscar Phillip “Pete” Marsh of Sanford died Sunday (06-01-2014), at his residence.

JOHN WILLIAM LAYTON
John William Layton, 57, of Liberty passed away Sunday, (06-01-2014) at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday, (06-05-2014) at 11 a.m. at Smithwood Christian Church Cemetery. The family received friends on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty.
Mr. Layton was the son of the late William Album Layton, Sr. and Betty Jane Bunton Layton. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Charlie Layton.
John is survived by his wife, Sandra Ball Layton of the home; daughters, Crystal Layton of Graham, Ashley Layton of Snow Camp; sisters, Jane Lucas, Marie Layton; brothers, Jim Layton, Clyde Layton; and one grandson.
At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to help with expenses to Jane Lucas, PO Box 910, Siler City, NC 27344.
ELIZABETH “GRANDMA” DANIEL
Elizabeth “Grandma” Daniel, age 87, of Chapel Hill, NC died early Wednesday, May 28, 2014.
Mrs. Daniel was born September 24, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, VA.She worked at UNC for sixteen years. Janie was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie W. Daniel and two sons, Charles and Robert “Shorty” Daniel.
She is survived by her daughters, Lillie McAnge of Blacksburg, VA, Molly Womble of Chapel Hill, NC, Nancy Turner of Hillsborough, NC, Ann Workman of Pittsboro, NC, Sue Chadwick of Bear Creek, NC and Frances Skinner of Oxford, NC; her sister Louise Pollard of Garner, NC; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A visitation was held at Mays Chapel Baptist Church from 10-12 p.m. on Friday, May 30, 2014. The funeral service began at 12 p.m. with the Rev. Bob Wachs officiating services. Burial followed at Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro, NC.
