DEBRA SUE MOORE EVANS

Debra Sue Moore Evans, 59, of Sanford, died Saturday, (04-05-2014) at Central Carolina Hospital.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date in.

She was born in Montgomery County, AL, on January 15, 1955, to the late James Moore and Peggy Clark Moore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a husband, Doug Evans; a grandson Robert Young and a brother Crayson Moore. Mrs. Evans worked as a CNA-2 for Central Carolina Hospital.

Survivors include a daughter, Christina Murchison of Sanford; brothers, Don Moore of Burlington, Eddie Moore of Mebane; sisters, Ann Britt, Diane Engel, both of Burlington, Patty Carver of Prospect Hill, Nancy Jane, Jody Starling, Theresa Burnette, all of Burlington and Brenda Alio of Columbia, Maryland; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

DALLAS JUNIOR “BUCK” MOFIELD
Mr. Dallas Junior “Buck” Mofield 73, of Aberdeen, passed away Friday, (04-04-2014) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral services were held Monday, (04-07-2014) at 2 p.m. at Brown’s Chapel Christian Church with Rev. Jeff Karnes and Rev. Larry Bullard officiating. Burial will follow at a later date at the church cemetery.

Mr. Mofield was a Moore County native and was an Army Veteran. He was a retired supervisor from Doxey Furniture and had also worked at Hal Enterprises. He was preceded in death by his son, Travis Wayne Mofield, his parents, Dallas and Bertha Mofield, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Moore Mofield of the home; sons, Michael Mofield of Riverview, FL, Keith Mofield of the home; daughter, Lisa Gwynn of Aberdeen; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sister, Ann Rogers of Ellerbe.

ULESS EDWARD “JIMMY” GORDON
Mr. Uless Edward “Jimmy” Gordon, 73, of Bear Creek, died Wednesday, (04-02-2014) at his home.

Graveside funeral services were held Saturday, (04-05-2014) at 2 p.m. at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jeremy Gordon officiating.

Mr. Gordon was born in Surry County, the son of the late Ulyess G. and Lula Gordon. He retired from Klopman Mills, and attended Red Hill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy, great-grandson, Axel David Lee, sister, Lala, and brother- Ray.
He is survived by his wife, Priscilla Mae Gordon of the home; sons, Timothy Gordon of Bear Creek, Joey Gordon of the home, Mark Gordon of Bear Creek; daughters, Lynne Nall of Calabash, Rita Ellis of Bynum; sisters, Lena Gordon, Nancy Morgan, both of Bear Creek; brothers, Rodger Gordon, Monroe Gordon, Willie Gordon, all of Bear Creek, Roy Gordon of Siler City. 15 grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to: Joyce-Brady Chapel, P.O. Box 89, Bennett, NC 27208 to help with funeral expenses.

BEULAH NEWBY BREWER
Beulah Newby Brewer, 80, of Siler City died Wednesday, (04-02-2014) at her home.

Funeral services were held Monday (04-07-2014) at Holy Trinity United Holy Church at 11 a.m. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Brewer was a native of Chatham County and a graduate of Chatham County Training School. She was a member of Holy Trinity United Holy Church where she was a member of the Mother’s Board and the senior choir. She was also retired from Boling Chair Company.

Survivors include sons, Clarence Renard Brewer ofFort Walton Beach, FL, Frank E. Brewer of the home; daughter, Jacalyn Goldston of Siler City; sister, Maggie Baines of Siler City; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

RICKY DEAN GAINES
Ricky Dean Gaines, 64, of NC Hwy 42, Goldston, died Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Gaines was born in Lee County on May 3, 1949, the son of Robert C. and Gertie Lee Gaines. He was a self employed carpenter and farmer. He enjoyed time spent with his family, playing cards, horseshoes and corn hole toss. Ricky was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carolyn Gilliland.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Brenda (Talley) Gaines; two daughters, Angie Gaines Kay, Allison McNeil; one son, Robbie Gaines and wife Daisha; sister, Brenda G. Beal; brother, Roger (Bow) Gaines and wife Peggie all of Goldston; six grandchildren, one great-grandson and two step-grandchildren.

The family received friends Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, and other times at the home of the daughter, Allison McNeill.

The funeral was held Friday, April 4, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 2981 Hwy 42, Goldston with Rev. Phillip Nelson officiating. Burial followed in Gaines Grove Cemetery.

LOUISE BROOKS WOOD

Louise “Sis” Brooks Wood, 81, of Country Club Drive, Siler City died Sunday, April 6, 2014 at First Health Hospice and Palliative Care, Pinehurst.

Mrs. Wood was born in Chatham County on August 12, 1932, the daughter of Louise Cunningham and Frank Gibbons Brooks, Sr. After graduating from Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia, she returned to Siler City, married her high school sweetheart, and established lovely homes where her culinary skills and hospitality expertise soon became apparent to all. She entertained with flair and was acknowledged as a hostess of considerable talent.

She was devoted to her family, active in various activities of the community, and dedicated to the First Methodist Church, where she faithfully attended for decades and was a choir member. She found great pleasure in golfing occasions, as golf has always been a family passion. Generations of her family delighted her as they pursued and excelled at the game of golf.

She was a gracious Southern lady, generous of spirit and kind in heart. Many also admired her for the tenacity and courage she exhibited while battling cancer on six occurrences.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry B. Wood, Jr.; an infant son, Andy B. Wood; her parents; and brothers, Jim and Yank Brooks.

She is survived by one daughter: Frankie W. Tate and husband, Alan; two sons: Jerry B. (Twig) Wood, III and wife, Betty, Craig B. Wood and wife, Margaret all of Siler City, NC; grandchildren, Jerry B. Wood, IV, Stephen F. Wood, Craig B. Wood, II, Ashley A. Wood; Lindsay A. Tate and Austin K. Tate.

The family received friends Tuesday, April 8, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1101 West Raleigh Street, Siler City, NC. The funeral was held Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Clyde Denny and Rev. Joe Casteel officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City.

LOUIS BENSON MITCHELL
Louis Benson Mitchell, 88, of Pittsboro, died Sunday, April 6, 2014 at his home, following several years of declining health. He was surrounded by his family.

Benson was born in Chatham County, NC, the son of the late Earlie and Arzona Mitchell. A combat veteran of WWII, he was most proud of his service in the US Army. He was a Combat Infantryman who was assigned as a Heavy Machine Gunner during the liberation of the Philippines and the occupation of Japan.

Benson retired from Cooper-Harris Ford in Pittsboro many years ago. While in retirement, he enjoyed working in his woodshop, fishing at the coast, gardening or spending time with his family. He loved music and playing his harmonica. He also loved everything related to nature, especially birds.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Jenny Pierce and two brothers, Caley Mitchell and Laddie Mitchell.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Beal Mitchell, of the home, and children Linda Jones (Bill), Pamela Shuping (Bill), Kaye Mitchell-May (Norman May), Midge Mitchell, Tommy Mitchell (Marty), eight grandchildren (Melanie Chew, Elizabeth Rice, Megan Suttles, Christina Jones, Katie Jarvis, Kyle Mitchell, Erin May and Andrew Shuping), and three great grandchildren (Camille Chew, Eli Rice and Isaac Rice). He is also survived by two brothers, Earlie Mitchell and Homer Mitchell.

The family received friends on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. A funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Gum Springs Baptist Church in Moncure, NC, with the Rev. Jackie Franks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Guests were invited to join the family for a reception in the church fellowship hall immediately following the graveside service.

His family and friends will miss his genuine and thoughtful qualities.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne funeral service and Cremation, Pittsboro.

KATHERINE (KAY) SANSON SMITH

Katherine (Kay) Sanson Smith of Gulf Breeze, FL died at the age of 91 on April 6, 2014. Kay was the wife of the late Billy Cevus Smith, attorney, of Pittsboro, North Carolina. Born in Atoka, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of David Alexander Sanson and Bertha Jorndt Sanson. After her father died, her mother married Harry John Reynolds.

Kay moved to Gulf Breeze, Florida in 2004 to live with her son, Don, and his wife, Karen. Although in her later years, she attended Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church in Gulf Breeze, she retained her membership in the Pittsboro United Methodist Church.

Kay attended college in San Diego, California and worked as an office manager for her husband and for McNeill and Roberts Building Supply in Pittsboro for many years. She was an active member of her church. A member of a U.S. Coast Guard family while growing up, she was the first woman to join the Coast Guard from the Mobile, Alabama area during WWII. She served as a switch board operator, attaining the rank of petty officer during the war.

Surviving are her children, Don Smith and his wife, Karen, of Gulf Breeze, Florida; Joanne Ryan and her husband, Dan, of Jupiter, Florida; her nephew Andrew Branch, who lived with the family throughout high school and college; her sister Joan Wolfe of Charlotte, North Carolina; her sister Barbara Clark of Houston, Texas; her grandchildren, Henry Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada; Chad Ryan of Tallahassee, Florida; Cameron Ryan of Denver, Colorado; and Chris Ryan of Los Angeles, California; and a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Mary Hendricks, Margie Devinney, and Shirley Sanson.

Kay will best be remembered as a very compassionate, nurturing person. She cared for those who were sick, unhappy, or just needed help. She was a wonderful mother and a very good friend.

A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Friday April 11, 2014 at Hall-Wynne funeral service in Pittsboro. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Pittsboro United Methodist Church in Pittsboro. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to Covenant Hospice, 5041 North 12th Avenue, Pensacola, Fl. 32504.

The family is being assisted by Hall-Wynne funeral service.

RONALD S. (RONNIE) HENDERSON
Ronald S. (Ronnie) Henderson, 62, of Bear Creek, passed away at UNC Hospital on Sunday (03-23-2014).

A memorial service has been planned by the family at the Southwest Community Center/American Legion Post #101, 6031 Old US Hwy 421 South, Bear Creek, on Saturday, (04-05-2014) at 2 p.m.

WILLIAM “CONE” HILLIARD, JR.
Mr. William “Cone” Hilliard Jr., 78, of Staley passed away Wednesday, (03-26-2014) at Siler City Center.

Funeral services were held Saturday, (03-29-2014) at 2 p.m. at Horseshoe Presbyterian Church where he was a member with Rev. Tom Currie officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Hilliard was a Chatham County native and had been a truck driver for 47 years.

Survivors include his wife of almost 58 years, Shirley Burke Hilliard of the home; daughters, Amanda McMasters of Staley, “Sam” Prevatte of Siler City, Rachelle Tucker of Staley; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brothers, Johnny Hilliard of Siler City, and Odell Hilliard of Bear Creek.

BERTA MAE BRADY McDANIEL
Ms. Berta Mae Brady McDaniel 80, formerly of Bennett, passed away Saturday (03-29-2014) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, (04-01-2014) at 2 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church where she was a member with Dr. Neal Jackson and Dr. Curtis Barbery officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

Ms. McDaniel was a Randolph County native and worked in the textiles industry and retired from Chatham Hospital as an ER Clerk. She was the daughter of the late Erastus and Cratie Ritter Brady. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold McDaniel, sisters, Artie Teeter, Bessie Brady, and brothers, Lloyd, Bill, and Voyage Brady.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia “Pat” Clark of the home; son, Michael Spoon of Asheboro; brothers, Jerry Brady of Bennett, Joe Mack Brady of Coleridge; and three grandchildren.
