JOYCE BENN WARREN

Joyce Benn Warren was born in Montreal, Canada on July 29, 1930. Her mother, Louise Walker, emigrated from Wales, her father was Canadian, George Benn. In 1951 Joyce met Richard Warren on a trip to North Carolina. They married six months later. Tom Warren was soon born, followed by brother Bruce. The family resided at Fort Bragg where Richard served with the 82nd Airborne and Special Forces. Orders came to travel to Okinawa, Japan in 1962 where daughter Laura was born. New orders sent the family back to Fort Bragg where Joyce and Richard retired. Joyce found great joy in volunteering with the Red Cross, first at Womack Army Hospital then in Okinawa. When the kids were grown and gone, Joyce started volunteering for various Red Cross disasters around the country and served as Disaster Coordinator from coast to coast, from the California earthquakes, hurricanes in Florida, Alabama, and North Carolina, to ice storms in New York. She served with the Red Cross for nearly 50 years in over 40 states and territories. In addition to her work, she had many adventures at home. Joyce was an avid gardener, dancer and lover of life. She participated in many championship bowling leagues and she loved working with the Special Forces Association. Her great joy was helping others and she leaves a legacy of service, inspiring all who knew her.

Joyce moved to Pittsboro, NC in 2004 to be close to Laura, her husband Pierre and grandchildren Rhys and Riana. She became a regular at neighborhood parties, baseball and softball games and bingo at Twin Rivers Independent Living where she resided.

The family wishes to offer heartfelt thanks to Twin Rivers’ director Patricia Kim, aides Lisa Coe, Ashley Truitt, Brandie McCandless, Joyce Heath and Nurse Libby and the entire team from UNC Hospice. The care Joyce received was compassionate and loving every day.

Joyce was predeceased by husband Richard, son Bruce, brothers George, Ronnie and Eddie Benn. She leaves her children, Laura and Tom, son-in-law, Pierre, grandchildren Rhys and Riana Lauffer, Nick (Erin), Kyle and Paige Warren, and their mother Leslie Warren to cherish her memory.

Please consider volunteering in your community and making a donation to the Red Cross in her memory.

The memorial service will be conducted by Rev. Ann Ritter at 5 p.m. Friday, December 9, 2011 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Friends may visit with the family following the service.
