JEFFREY LYNN “JEFF” THOMAS

Jeffrey “Jeff” Lynn Thomas, 43, of Graham, formerly of Siler City, died Friday, (09-02-2011) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

The funeral was held Monday (09-05-2011) at 3 p.m. at Oakley Baptist Church, with Rev. Brian Sandifer officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Thomas was born August 6, 1968, the son of James Don and Mary Elizabeth “Lib” (Brooks) Thomas. He was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of Jordan-Matthews High School, and a former member of Chatham Rescue Squad. He was employed as a photographer with Life Touch National School Studio's and was a member of Oakley Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Candy (Poe) Thomas of the home; daughters, Jessica Lynn Thomas, Makayla Louise Thomas, both of the home; parents, Don and Lib Thomas of Bear Creek; and brother, Eric Thomas of Lexington.

GEORGE LEE CROSS

Mr. George Lee Cross, 64, of Bear Creek died Tuesday, (08-30-2011).

Funeral services were held Saturday (09-03-2011) at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev. Kenneth M. Brooks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

A graduate of Horton High School, Mr. Cross served in the Vietnam War. He was a member of Staunton Memorial CME Church and was president of the male chorus.

Survivors include his wife, Rosia Mae Cross of the home; daughters, Michelle Grant of Pittsboro, Geleica Rockwell of Fuquay-Varina; step-daughters, Kim Alston, Angela Wilson, both of Holly Springs; stepson, Larry Wilson, Jr. of Tabor City; brothers, John Cross of Moncure, Wayne Cross of Brown Hill, Archie Cross of Pittsboro; six grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

SARAH INEZ HOBSON SPEIGHT

Mrs. Sarah Inez Hobson Speight, 78, of Bennett, passed away Tuesday, (09-06-2011).

Graveside services will be held Thursday (09-08-2011) at 11 a.m. at Bennett Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Thurman Williams officiating.

Mrs. Speight was a Scotland County. Native, retired from Mid-State Poultry Inc., and attended Mountain of Faith Christian Church.

Survivors include daughters, Annette Maness, Sandra Perez, both of Bennett; sons, George Speight of Ramseur, Timmy Speight, Danny Speight, Ronnie Speight, all of Bennett, Ricky Speight of Asheboro, 18 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after the service and other times at the home of her grandson, J.R. Maness, 205 South 10th Avenue, Siler City.

Joyce-Brady Chapel is assisting the Speight Family.

PHILLIP ANTHONY SPIVEY

Phillip Anthony Spivey, 57, of 644 Reno Sharps Store Road, Bear Creek died Sunday, September 4, 2011 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Mr. Spivey was born June 29, 1954, the son of Purvis and Rosella (Phillips) Spivey. He was a native of Chatham County, attended Goldston Elementary School and graduated from Chatham Central High School. Phil had worked for Kayser Roth and also worked as a fork lift driver for Structural Woods Perserving in Coleridge. He was preceded in death by his father, Purvis Spivey.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Lindley) Spivey of the home; mother, Rosella (Phillips) Spivey; one sister, Phyllis S. Williams and husband, Jimmy of Moncure; one brother, Herman Spivey and wife, Mae of Sanford; step-sons, Tony Watts of the home, Michael Watts of Ramseur, Ricky Watts of Sanford; nieces, Amy Phillips of Ramseur, Annette Blell and husband, Matt of Sanford; nephew, Anthony Phillips of Gulf; great-niece, Brittany Sykes of Ramseur; great-nephews, Joshua York of Ramseur, Mason Blell of Sanford; step-grandsons, Lil Ricky Watts of Mt. Airy, William Watts of Mt. Airy; and step-granddaughter, Cheyanne Watts of Mt. Airy.

The family received friends Tuesday, September 6, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Gulf Presbyterian Church, 1325 Gulf Road, Gulf with Rev. Bruce Benton officiating. Burial followed in Whites Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Liberty.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Phillip Spivey Memorial Fund, c/o 644 Reno Sharps Store Road, Bear Creek, NC 27207.

JANICE NALL POE

Janice Nall Poe, 92, of Sanford died Monday (08-22-2011).

Memorial service will be held Friday (09-02-2011) at the First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Poe was born in Chatham County, the daughter of the late James Nicholas Nall and Melissa Phillips Nall. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for more than 20 years, retired from J C Penney. She was a member of Optimisses and the Home Extension Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry C. Poe; and brother, James Russell Nall.

Survivors include daughters, Judith Poe Cancellaro of Johnson City, TN, Sarah Poe Ribeiro of Jefferson, MA; sons, Ronald Henry Poe of Denver, Anthony Clarence Poe of Bennett; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the Church Parlor beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, prior to the Memorial service.

TAFT THOMAS PHILLIPS

Taft Thomas Phillips, 79, of Goldston died Sunday (08-28-2011) at E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center in Lillington.

Graveside service were held at Edward Hill Friends Meeting Tuesday (08-30-2011) at 11 a.m. with Rev. Tim Strider officiating.

Mr. Phillips was the son of Arthur E. and Nora Joyce Phillips, a native of Chatham County and owner/operator of Goldston Grocery. He was preceded in death by brothers, Jack Phillips, Wayne Phillips, and sister, Barbara Webster.

Survivors include his wife, Lilly Hutchins Phillips of Goldston; son, Eddie Phillips of Goldston; daughter, Rene Duggins of Sanford; brothers, Jimmy Phillips of Bonlee; sisters, Joyce Stone of Sanford, Hilda Moore of Greensboro; and two grandchildren.

JOHN HARVEY LAWRENCE, JR.

John Harvey Lawrence, Jr., 77, of Moncure died Wednesday (08-24-2011) at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday (08-28-2011) with Rev. Gary More officiating. Burial followed in the Haywood Independent Bible Church cemetery.

Mr. Lawrence was born in Raleigh, son of the late John H. Lawrence, Sr. and Norma Thomas Lawrence. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, and was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Bullard Lawrence, sisters, Ruth Wright, Kathrine Lucas, and Hellon Lawrence Utley.

Survivors include his daughter, Carol L. Besley of Moncure; sons, Joe Lawrence of Grifton, Donald Merle Lawrence, John “Lynn” Lawrence, all of Moncure; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cemetery Fund at Haywood Independent Bible Church, c/o Sarah Faye Wimberly, 83 Wimberly Road, Moncure, NC 27559.

MAGGIE LINENS JONES

Maggie Linens Jones, 89, of Siler City died Friday, (08-26-2011) at her residence.

The funeral was held Monday, (08-29-2011) at 2 p.m. at the First Wesleyan Church with Rev. Eddie McClure officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Jones was born March 22, 1922, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Frazier) Linens. She was a native of Chatham County, a member of the First Wesleyan Church of Siler City and a homemaker. Maggie was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil H. Jones.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda J. Burke of Siler City; son, Harold Dean Jones of Lexington; sister. Mary Carol Byrd of Siler City; three grandchildren; two step- grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1414 E. Eleventh Street, Siler City, NC 27344.

PEARLIE R. PITTMAN

Pearlie R. Pittman, 89, of Siler City died Monday (08-29-2011) at Siler City Rehabilitation and Care Center.

A memorial service will be held Saturday (09-03-2011) at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Great Bridge, VA.

Mrs. Pittman was a native of Martin County.

Survivors include daughters, Violet Davidson of Siler City, Virginia Murphy of Chesapeake, VA; son, Wayne Pittman of Virginia Beach, VA; sisters, Rose Crouch of South Boston, VA, Evelyn Leffett of Hampton, VA, Dorothy Cullipher, Shirley Roebuck, both of Williamston; brothers, William Ernest Roberson of Torrance, CA, Mayhue Roberson, Vance Roberson, both of Williamston, Dennis Ray Roberson of Tarboro; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

AARON LEE WASHINGTON

Mr. Aaron Lee Washington, 29, of Pittsboro., died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, (08-28-2011).

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, (09-02-2011) at Emmaus Baptist Church, with Pastors Steve Moore, Ronnie Byrd and Jeff Jones presiding. Interment will be in Bell’s Baptist Church Cemetery.

Aaron was born in Wake County, November 23, 1981, the son of William Rickey and Katherine Peters Washington. A member of Bells Baptist Church, he was a graduate of Northwood High School, the Basic Law Enforcement Program at CCCC, and worked for the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department. He was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Ann Washington, and grandparents, William Lee and Faye Denton Washington

Survivors include his wife, Lisa Marie Mancino Washington; sons, Warren Lee Washington, Matthew Walker Washington, Luke Denton Washington of the home; parents, Rick and Kathy Washington of Siler City; brothers, Stephen Washington of Fletcher, Paul Washington of Pittsboro, Ethan Washington of Siler City; sisters, Melia Sanders of Apex, Joy Washington of Savannah, GA; and grandparents, Bob and Margaret Peters of Hayesville.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hall – Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro.

Memorials may be sent to the Lisa Washington Special Memorial Account at any branch of the State Employees Credit Union. Please note on the memo line of the check “Lisa Washington Memorial Account”.

Arrangements are under the care of Hall – Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

JOYCE McDANIEL FESMIRE

Joyce McDaniel Fesmire, 84, of 214 East Elk Street, Siler City died Thursday, August 25, 2011 at Chatham Hospital, Inc.

Mrs. Fesmire was a native of Chatham County, born October 27, 1926 the daughter of Mathew and Mollie (Campbell) McDaniel. She had worked for Siler City Mills, Wrenn & Wrenn Insurance Agency and James S. Vann Insurance Agency. Joyce was a member of Edward Hill Friends Meeting where she had served as Clerk of the Meeting, a Sunday School teacher and also served on Ministry and Council. She enjoyed sewing, needle work and watching game shows. She also enjoyed carrying her granddaughter to watch the train as it came into town and spending time with her. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Lane Fesmire.

She is survived by two daughters, Lana Collins of Durham, Ellen Seagroves and husband, David of Siler City and granddaughter, Jessica Seagroves of Siler City.

The family received friends Saturday, August 27, 2011 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Sunday, August 28, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Edward Hill Friends Meeting, 92 Ed Leonard Road, Siler City with Josh Conrad officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
