IRENE MOFFITT SHAW

Irene Moffitt Shaw, 87, of Siler City, died Monday, (01-04-2010) at Chatham Hospital, Inc.

Funeral services will be held Friday, (01-08-2010) at 11 a.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with her son, Joseph Edward Shaw officiating. Burial will follow in Loves Creek Baptist Cemetery.

Mrs. Shaw was born August 3, 1922, the daughter of Kirby Edgar and Ida Kidd Moffitt. She was a native of Chatham County, a member of the First Wesleyan Church of Siler City and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark O. Shaw; brothers, William and Horace Moffitt; sisters, Gladys Waddy, Etta Holt and Pauline M. Moody.

Survivors include sons, Joseph Edward Shaw of Kingsport, TN, William Michael Shaw of Canaan, MA; one sister, Doris M. Brooks of Richmond, VA; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday, (01-07-2010) from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

FORREST DANE ANDREWS

Forrest Dane Andrews, 27, of 1291 Harold Andrews Road, Siler City died Monday, January 4, 2010.

Mr. Andrews was born December 4, 1982, the son of Darrell R. and the late Janice Cox Andrews. He was born in Guilford County and was a 2001 graduate of Jordan-Matthews High School, and employed with Darrell Andrews Trucking. Forrest was a loving and devoted father to his son, Ayden, and a diehard Carolina fan. He loved going to the lake. He was preceded in death by his mother, Janice Cox Andrews.

He is survived by one son, Ayden Andrews; father, Darrell R. Andrews; two sisters, Donna A. Stone and husband, Scott of Siler City, Angel A. Dwyer and husband, John of Jamestown; niece and nephew, L'oreal and Andrew Jones; great-niece, Kiley Prestyn Dixon; and grandmother, Juanita Baxter Cox of Bennett.

The family received friends Tuesday, January 5, 2010 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and other times at the home of Darrell Andrews, 1273 Harold Andrew Road, Siler City.

The funeral was held Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 2:30 at First Wesleyan Church, 608 N. 3rd Avenue, Siler City with Rev. Eddie McClure officiating. Burial followed in Bethlehem Wesleyan Church Cemetery, Snow Camp.

JACK MONROE

Jack Monroe, 84, of Franklinville died Saturday (12-26-09) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday (12-30-09) at El Shaddai Messianic Ministries in Asheboro, with Rev. Eric Branch officiating.

Mr. Monroe was a native of L.A. County, CA, a retired salesman for PGA Golf Equipment and a golf pro. He was a mason, having completed both the Scottish and York rites, a member of the Shriners, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a WW II Navy veteran, and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Henderson Monroe of the home; daughter, Margie Monroe of Franklinville; son, George D. Monroe of Knoxville, TN; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family received friends at the residence immediately following the services.

Memorials may be made to El Shaddai Messianic Ministries, PO Box 27, Franklinville, NC 27248.

LOTTIE HANCOCK PURVIS

Mrs. Lottie Hancock Purvis, 88, of Bennett died Saturday, (01-02-2010) at Chat-ham Hospital in Siler City.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, (01-05-2010), at Beulah Baptist Church with Rev. Gene Booker and Dr. Curtis Barbery officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Purvis was a Guilford County native, a retired floor lady at Ithaca Mills in Robbins and the widow of Vernon Purvis.

Survivors include daughter, Helen P. Ferree of Oak Island; sons, Dr. Henry Purvis and wife Kim of Sanford, Hoyle Purvis and wife Ally of Bennett. There are 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Rachel Cagle of Asheboro; and brother, Ray Hancock of Morton, Illinois.

Visitation was held Monday, January 4, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett

Memorials may be directed to Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 8454 Howard Mill Road, Bennett, NC 27208.

ROBERT “BOB” GLEN RECTOR

Winston-Salem – Mr. Robert “Bob” Glen Rector, 75, formerly of Sanford, died Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Hospital in Winston-Salem. Born in Gaston County, NC on February 3, l934, he was the son of the late Carl and Nell Rector. Bob and his loving wife, the late Margaret R. Rector, lived in Siler City, for 20 years where they raised their three daughters. Bob was a member of the Siler City Jaycees, the Masonic Lodge, where he served as the Grand Patron, the Shrine Club, and many business associations. Bob was an important part of the Construction Management program at East Carolina University where he was a member of the board that started the program and was very proud of this accomplishment. He was employed by American South Contractors of Sanford and was a member of their board until his death. Bob was a devoted husband and father and was loved deeply by his three daughters. They will miss him greatly, but have wonderful memories that will last forever.

Bob Rector is survived by his daughters: Ann Slade and husband Tom of Raleigh, Bobbie Johnston and husband Mitchell of Leesburg, VA, and Debi Parker and husband Tim of Advance; eight grandchildren, and four great-children. He is also survived by two brothers Ted (Betty) Rector of Charlotte, and Gene (Nancy) Rector of Macon, GA.

The funeral took place Sunday, January 3, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford, with burial following at Buffalo Cemetery. The family received friends 30 minutes prior to the funeral at Miller-Boles Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation, Inc., 30 East 33rd Street, New York, New York 10016; or to the First Baptist Church of Sanford, Capital Improvement Fund, 202 Summitt Dr., Sanford, NC 27330.

Miller-Boles Funeral Home is serving the family.

SYLVIA L. BURNS

Sylvia L. Burns, 88, died peacefully December 30, 2009 at the Hospice House, 501 Park Street, Charlottesville, Virginia.

A long time resident of Lake Monticello, Sylvia was a member of Effort Baptist Church in Palmyra. She grew up in Siler City, North Carolina - Southern California was her home for forty years. She served in the Women’s Appointed Volunteer Emergency Services (WAVES) during World War II, after which she resumed her teaching career in North Carolina and California. She also taught U. S. military dependents in Japan and Germany.

Two brothers, Carlos and Robert Burns, and many nieces and nephews survive her. Her family and friends will miss Sylvia. A private service will be held in Siler City, North Carolina.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lake Monticello Rescue Squad, 10 Slice Court, Palmyra, Virginia 22963; or Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, Virginia 22911.

RALPH SMITH

Ralph Smith, 77, of Bear Creek died Friday (12-25-09) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Graveside services and burial with military honors were held at 3 p.m. Sunday (12-27-09) at Pleasant Grove Christian Church Cemetery near Bennett with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating.

Mr. Smith was a Chatham County native, an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, a retired farmer and a member of Pleasant Grove Christina Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Dell Johnson Smith of the home; sons, Lee Smith, Billy Smith, both of Bear Creek; bother, Joe Smith of Greensboro; sister, Lois Branson of Siler City, and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice.

JOHN CARLTON SWAIN

John Carlton Swain, 54, of Bear Creek. died Saturday, (12-26-09) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, (12-29-09) at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett with Minister Bob Mason officiating. Burial followed in Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Swain was a native of Wilmington, a graduate of Chatham Central High School, a retired independent trucker, and a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Casteel Swain of the home; step-daughter, Faye Henderson of Douglasville, GA; step-sons, Roy J. Moulder of Stockbridge, GA and Kenneth A. Moulder of Fayetteville, GA; and eight step-grandchildren.

Memorials should be directed to Childrens Health Care, cfo Dr. Jeffrey Lewis, 1001 Johnson Ferry Rd. N.E., Atlanta, GA. 30342

MARY CLARK MOORE

Mary Moore, 99, of Pittsboro, died Thursday (12-24-09) at Pittsboro Christian Village.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, (12-30-09), at Pittsboro Christian Village Chapel. Burial followed at Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City.

Ms. Moore was the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Clark. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Moore.

She is survived by children, Bill Moore of Simpsonville, SC, Ernest Moore of Osorno, Chile, Stan Moore of Statesville, Arlene Robinson of Toronto, Canada, Jim Moore of Kent OH; 16 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family received friends at 1 p.m. at Pittsboro Christian Village Chapel prior the service on Wednesday.

JUNE CAROL LIGHT KELLY

June Carol Kelly, 81, of Siler City died Saturday, (12-26-09) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, (12-29-09) at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, with Rev. Scott Faw officiating.

Mrs. Kelly was the daughter of the late Henry and Essie McMasters Light. She was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and member of West End UMC. She was preceded in by her husband, Leonard Rufus Kelly.

Survivors include daughters, Linda K. Plowman of Siler City, Marcia Kelly of Pittsboro; and two grandsons.

JESSE HORACE MANN

Mr. Jesse Horace Mann, 82, of Pittsboro died Saturday, (12-26-09) at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation Center Siler City.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (12-30-09) at Hickory Mountain Methodist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.

Mr. Mann was born in Pittsboro, the son of the late Oscar and Stella Smith Mann. He was the owner/ operator of Manco Dairy Farm of Pittsboro and a long term member of the National Holstein Association. He was a 4-H leader in Chatham County, and a veteran of WWII, serving in Germany. He was predeceased by a sister, Katharine Mann Newton Williams, and brother, Fletcher Mann.

Survivors include his wife, Pheobia Braxton Mann; children, Ellen Mann Allen of Cary, Jesse Lynn Mann of Pittsboro; sisters, Mrs. Stella Jones of Pittsboro, Mrs. Viola Young of Boone; and four grandchildren;

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Hickory Mountain Methodist Church, % Maxine Tillman, 3326 Goldston-Glendon Road, Goldston, NC 27252, or to the charity of your choice.
