RAY McMAHON, SR.
Ray McMahon, Sr., 67, of Siler City died Tuesday (01-27-2009) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
No funeral services are planned.
Mr. McMahon was a native of Olphant, PA and was owner of Shady Oaks Mobile Home Park.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen Ann Connoly McMahon; daughter, Linda McMahon Heaton of Asheboro; sons, Ray McMahon, Jr, Paul McMahon, both of Sanford; sister, Mary Rokowski of Spring Lake; brother, Roy McMahon of Sanford; four grandchildren.
ALTA BELLE P. MILLS
Mrs. Alta Belle Pendergraph Gilmore Mills, 81, of Pittsboro died Wednesday (01-28-2009) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday (01-31-2009) at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Mills was a native of Durham County, the daughter of John Erie Pendergraph and Addie Farrell Pendergraph. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by husbands, William Gilmore, Otis Mills; son, Randy Mills; and five brothers and sisters.
Survivors include sons, William Gilmore of Chapel Hill, Ted Mills of Chatham County; daughters, Florence Gurley of Pittsboro, Sharon Holland of Sanford, Kathy Jenks of Siler City; sister, Maudie Nash of Franklinton; 15 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
ELAINE GENDRON CONSTABLE
Elaine Gendron Constable, 55, of Pittsboro, died Thursday (01-29-2009) at her home.
No services are planned at this time.
Mrs. Constable was a native of Taunton, MA.
Survivors include her husband, Mark Constable of Pittsboro; sons Keith Constable of Greenville, Justin Worsley of Wake Forest; parents, Aime and Edith Jones Gendron of Rehoboth, MA; brothers, Tommy, David, Daniel Gendron, all of Taunton, MA, Jeffrey Gendron of Maine; sister, Helen G. Sauerlinder, of East Providence, RI; and three grandchildren.
JOAN JACKSON HILL
Mrs. Joan Jackson Hill, 78, of Pittsboro, died Wednesday (01-14-2009) at her home.
Interment will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park in Vestal, NY.
Mrs. Hill was a native of Jersey City, NJ and the daughter of Walter Richard Jackson and Agnes Frances Burns Jackson. She graduated from Ithaca College, and received her Masters Degree from Syracuse University. For 14 years she taught elementary school and/or high school. She was preceded in death by her husband Louis.
There are no immediate survivors.

KIRK BRYAN ALLRED
Kirk Bryan Allred, 44, of Pittsboro, died Friday (01-30-2009).
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, (02-04-2009) at Pittsboro Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Allred was the son of Adrian Allred and Harolene “Tot” Morris Allred. He was employed in the Telecommunications Department at UNC- Chapel Hill, and was a member of Pittsboro Baptist Church.
Survivors include his son, Caleb Elias Allred of Hillsborough; brothers, Kyle Allred of Sunset Beach, and Kent Allred of Pittsboro. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Kimber Pilkington.
DOROTHY MAE FRAZIER SMITH
Dorothy Mae Frazier Smith, 84, of Ramseur died Saturday, (01-31-2009) at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (02-04-2009) at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, with Rev. Reece Ledbetter officiating. Burial followed in Moon's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was a native of Randolph County and the daughter of Jessie Mae and Esther Needham Frazier. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie P. Smith.
She is survived by two daughters, Rosa Mae McDaniel, Rachel Holt, both of Siler City; son, Harold Smith of FL; sisters, Estelle Siler Ward, Lucille Hayes, both of Staley, Evelyne McDaniel of Siler City; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
DONNA BRANSON APPLEWHITE
Donna Branson Applewhite, 47, of Bennett, died Sunday (02-01-2009) at her residence.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (02-04-2009) at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, with Rev. Mark Strickland and Rev. Tim Strider officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Applewhite was a native of Guilford County and retired manager of Kimbrell’s in Siler City.
Survivors include her husband, Roy T. (Frog) Applewhite of the home; daughters, Stacy Applewhite, Casey Applewhite, both of Nashville, TN; mother, Ruby Branson of Siler City; sisters, Deborah Saunders of Bennett, Pamela Brown of Knightdale; and brother, Michael Branson of Michigan.
WALTER THOMAS GAINES
Walter Thomas Gaines, age 84, of 1480 Delphus Stinson Road, Goldston died Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro. Mr. Gaines was born March 16, 1924 the son of David T. and Cora (Carroll) Gaines.
Mr. Gaines was a native of Chatham County and retired logger. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith and a Army veteran of WWII. Walter was a member of the NC Trappers Association and loved his gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Nellie (Tally) Gaines; one daughter, Audrey G. Culberson and husband, Robert of Siler City; and two sons, Dewey Gaines and wife, Janice of Randleman, Steve Gaines and wife, Tina of Goldston; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren
The family received friends Monday, February 2, 2009 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The graveside services were held Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 17721 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial followed in Gaines Grove Cemetery, Goldston
JULIAN WELFORD CAMPBELL
Julian Welford Campbell, age 92, of 1716 Legion Road, Chapel Hill, formerly of 1634 White Smith Road, Siler City died Friday, January 30, 2009 at Britthaven of Chapel Hill.,
Mr. Campbell was born January 6, 1917, the son of Alford Gad and Lucy (Crutchfield) Campbell. He was a native of Chatham County, a retired dairy farmer and a member of Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church. Welford was a member of Silk Hope Ruritan Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Love Campbell
He is survived by one son, Keith Campbell and wife, Carolyn of North Myrtle Beach, SC; two daughters, Janice C. Dixon and husband, Billy of Siler City; Shelby C. McLaurin and husband, Clinton of Siler City; seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
The family received friends Sunday, February 1, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Monday, February 2, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church, 5016 Silk Hope-Gum Spring Road, Pittsboro, with Rev. M. Brian Welborne, Rev. Paul Edwards and Randy Martinez officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

RICHARD L. BATTISTA

Richard L. Battista, 65, of Pittsboro formerly from Garner, went to be with the Lord on January 30, 2009. Richard was preceded in death by his wife Patricia; father, Sam; and step-daughter, Brenda Harms.
He is survived by his mother, Lucy Battista; brother, Donald Battista; sister, Joanne Joseph; four step-sons, James, George, Vince and Patrick Harms; step-daughter, Melissa Harms; and six grandchildren.
There will be a private memorial service at a later date.

BETSY RILEY HARRIS
Mrs. Betsy Riley Harris, 80, of Pittsboro, died Wednesday (01-21-2009) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m., Saturday, (01-24-2009) at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery, with the Rev. Jimmy Owens and Rev. Rex Brooks officiating.
Mrs. Harris was a native of Burlington, the daughter of Leslie Walter Riley and Laura Valentine Fogelman Riley. She was a retired bank teller, and a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby H. Harris, Sr., her parents, a brother and two sisters.
Survivors include sons David Harris, Bob Harris, both of Pittsboro; and three grandchildren.

MARY LEE WILKIE
Mary Lee Wilkie, 89, of Coventry House, Siler City, formerly of Goldston, died Monday, (01-26-2009) at Chatham Hospital in Siler City.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, (01-28-2009), at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Barry Lawrence officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Wilkie was the daughter of Doyle and Rena Andrews Hatch, a native of Chatham County, a graduate of Goldston High School, and a retired homemaker. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and was a member of the WMU. She had worked as a volunteer at Sunbridge.
Mrs. Wilkie was preceded in death by her husband, Frank I. Wilkie; a son, Doyle Wilkie; and her parents.
She is survived by daughter: Margaret W. Kidd of Raleigh; son, Andy Wilkie of Goldston; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
