PRENTICE LANE SMITH

Prentice Lane Smith, 95, of 416 Rufus Brewer Road, Siler City died Friday (09-12-2008) at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation. Mr. Smith was born July 18, 1913 the son of Joseph A. and Dora (Lane) Smith.

Mr. Smith was a native of Chatham County and a self-employed house painter and farmer. He was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. Prentice was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Covert Smith; two sons, Tommy W. Smith and Charles L. Smith.

He is survived by one son, Bill Smith of Greensboro; two daughters, Anne Smith and Mary Smith of Siler City; four grandchildren, Kim Dumke of Siler City, Greg Smith and wife, Amy of Raleigh, Jann Oakes and husband, Monk of Greensboro, Jennifer Harris and husband, Scott of Bear Creek; great-grandson, Logan Dumke of Siler City.

The family received friends Saturday (09-13-2008) from 7:00-8:30 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC, and other times at the family home.

Funeral services were held Sunday (09-14-2008) at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, 3631 Mt. Vernon-Hickory Mountain Road, Siler City, NC with Rev. M. Brian Wellborn officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

WYNELL STOUT COOPER

Mrs. Wynell Stout Cooper, 81, of US 15-501 North, Pittsboro, died Friday (09-12-2008) at her home following a brief period of declining health. Mrs. Cooper was born in Alamance County on February 6, 1927, the daughter of Clyde Elbert Stout and Beatrice Ollie Snyder Stout. She was a homemaker, and a member of Bynum United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Cooper is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kent Wilson Cooper and Linda Cooper of Pittsboro; daughters and sons-in-law, Jenny Cooper Bouldin and Ray Bouldin of Bynum, and Penny Cooper Boone and Tony Boone of Murrell’s Inlet, SC; grandchildren, Justin Ray Bouldin and wife Brandy, Kenneth Brandon Bouldin, Darren Kirk Bouldin, Courtney Rae Bouldin, Michael Wilson Cooper, Tony Michael Boone, and Jesse Wade Boone; and five great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Kenneth Wilson Cooper, preceded her in death August 6, 2008.

The service to celebrate Mrs. Cooper’s life was held Monday (09-15-2008) at 2:00 pm at Bynum United Methodist Church with The Rev. Jeff Babajtis presiding. Interment followed in Bynum United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 6:00-8:00 pm Sunday (09-13-2008) at Griffin funeral service in Pittsboro and at other times at Mrs. Cooper’s residence.

FRANCES DORSETT HUNTER

Frances Dorsett Hunter, 98, of 900 West Dolphin Street, Siler City, died Wednesday (09-10-2008) at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation. Mrs. Hunter was born October 1, 1909 the daughter of Vet M. and Mary Dorsett, Sr.

Mrs. Hunter was a native of Chatham County and a member of First Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Greensboro College where she majored in music.

Frances spent most of the last few years of her life as a resident of SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Siler City.

She is survived by two sons, James D. Pete Hunter of Siler City and Bill Hunter of Chapel Hill; three grandchildren, Mike Hunter, Ann Rubio and Brian Hunter; four great-grandchildren, Kyle Hunter, Jared Hunter, Stuart Buck and Rachel Buck; special friend, Shirley White.

Funeral services were held Friday (09-12-2008) at 11:00 a.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tony Capehart officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Chatham County Meals on Wheels, c/o Council on Aging, 112 Village Lake Road, Siler City, NC 27344.

OPAL HENRIOTT CHEEK

Opal Henriott Cheek, 76, of Bear Creek died Wednesday (09-03-2008) at the home of her son.

The graveside service was held on Friday (09-05-2008), at 2 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating.

Mrs. Cheek was a native of Nichols, Georgia and a retired supervisor from Novia Design. She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by sons, Thomas “Frank” Patrum of Snow Camp, James “Mike” Patrum of Elon College; brothers, Hank Henriott of Valparaso, FL, James Henriott of Apoka, FL; sister, Joanne Gay of Moultrie, GA; three grandchildren; three step-child ren; five step-grand children; and eight step-great-grand children.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, W. Chatham Relay for Life, C/O Betty Terry, 519 South Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

ADAM NEWELL AYERS

Adam Newell Ayers, 26, of Bear Creek died Tuesday (09-02-2008) at Chatham Hospital.

Services were held Friday (09-05-2008) at 2 p.m. at Church of Living Water in Staley with Pastor James Mitchell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Ayers was a native of Randolph County, a member of Church of Living Water, attended Chatham Central High School and was a graduate of Central Carolina Community College. He was employed by Discount Box & Pallet as a truck driver.

He is survived by his wife Brandi Funston Ayers; parents, Dale and Lisa Moore Ayers of Bennett; sister, Rebekah Ayers Kidd; brother, Christopher Dale Ayers; and paternal grandmother Viola Gwynn Ayers.

JOHN FRANCIS ROGERS

John Francis Rogers, 55, of Moncure, died Tuesday (08-26-2008) at his home.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday (09-06-2008) at 11 a.m. at Griffin Funeral Home in Pittsboro.

Mr. Rogers was a retired engineer from NJ Transit.

Surviving are his mother, Marie; son, Shaun; daughters, Jennifer and Kerry; and sister, Margaret.

ANN HOEKSTRA HAVENER

Ann Hoekstra Havener, 81, of Pittsboro Christian Village, died Sunday (09-07-2008), at Levine and Dickson Hospice Home in Huntersville.

The service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (09-10-2008), in the Chapel of Pittsboro Christian Village with Charles Grob and Sim Gay presiding. Interment followed in Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City.

Mrs. Havener was born in South Holland, IL. She was a homemaker, a volunteer for Life’s Key Prison Ministry, and a member of Pittsboro Christian Assembly.

Survivors include her son, Ronald Havener of Davidson; daughters, Patricia McClelland of MA, Linda Duncan of CT, and Nancy Ware of AZ; sisters, Tille Carrick of MI and Frances LaBue of CO; ten grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to Life’s Key, PO Box 10, Bethel Park, PA 15102.

MYRTLE POTTS CAMPBELL

Myrtle Potts Campbell, 81, of Chapel Hill died Friday (09-05-2008) in UNC Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday (09-13-2008) at Orange United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, David Joseph Campbell; sons, Ronnie Campbell, Larry Campbell, and Andy Campbell; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

CYTHINA DIANE MASON

Cythina Diane Mason, 52, of Siler City died Sunday (09-07-2008) at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Friday (09-12-2008) at 3 p.m. at Lambert Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Siler City, with Rev. William Harrington officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Mason was a member of Lambert Chapel Missionary Baptist Church and was employed by Quality Life Home Care of Pittsboro.

Survivors are her husband, Henry Mason of the home; children, Tonya Ewings and J.R. Mason, both of the home; mother, Josephine Caviness of Siler City; sisters, Eunice Thomas of Mebane, Jenifer Matthews of Trinity; brother, John Matthews of Seagrove; and one granddaughter.

HAZEL MARIE BALDWIN

Hazel Marie Baldwin, 62, died on Wednesday (09-03-2008).

Funeral services were held on Tuesday (09-09-2008) at Terrell Chapel Church in Pittsboro with Rev. Sharon Mitchell officiating.

Mrs. Baldwin joined Terrell Chapel Church at a very young age.

Surviving are daughters, Carolyn B. Perry of Pittsboro, Janet L. Baldwin of Staley; sisters, Nellie L. Carver of Carrboro, Blannie L. Nickerson of Graham; brothers, Alfred R. Baldwin and Willie R. Nickerson of Chapel Hill, Herman Nickerson of Henderson, and Ernest R. Nickerson of Snow Camp; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

TRUMAN JOHNSON

Mr. Truman Johnson, 86, of Siler City, died Sunday (09-07-2008) at Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Cabarrus County.

Mr. Johnson was born November 3, 1921, the son of Jesse and Emma (Thomas) Johnson. He was a native of Chatham County and worked for Blythe Brothers Construction of Charlotte for 35 years. He was a member of Brown’s Chapel UMC.

Truman was an Army veteran of WWII where he served at the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the bronze star for bravery. In addition to his love of humming birds he was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and a fan of Nascar.

He is survived by his wife Alice Walters Johnson of the home; son, Steve Johnson and wife, Terry of Heath, Texas; one sister, Estelle Cook of Concord, NC; grandchildren, Mark Johnson of Dallas Texas, Stephen Caffey and wife, Jennifer of Marlin, Texas; one great-granddaughter, “The Baby“, Emma.

Uncle Truman had numerous nieces and nephews that he loved and enjoyed including his friend, care-taker and daughter he never had, Connie Christie.

The family received friends Wednesday, September 10, 2008, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The funeral will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 255 Chicken Bridge Road, Pittsboro, NC with Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial will follow in Rocky River Friends Cemetery, 1795 Staley-Snow Camp Road, Siler City, NC.

Flowers are welcome or in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Truman to Tucker Hospice House, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

RUTH AUBURN LAUDER SCARLETTE

Ruth Auburn Lauder Scarlette, 91, formerly of Liberty, passed away on Friday (09-05-2008) at Sunbridge Nursing Home in Siler City.

A graveside service was held at Fairview Cemetery in Liberty on Sunday (09-07-2008) at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Eugene Dean, Jr. The family received friends Sunday from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home.

Mrs. Scarlette is the daughter of the late Thomas and Emma Bales Lauder. She was a kind and loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Surviving are her husband of 69 years, Robert Lee Scarlette; daughter, Hannah Auburn Scarlette Johnson (Russell); son, Thomas Lee Scarlette (Joanne); six grandchildren and 13 great-grand children.

At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Homecare Hospice, 1414 E. 11th St., Siler City, NC 27344 or First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 220, Liberty, NC 27298.
