MARY ELLEN “MAMIE” PHILLIPS

Mrs. Mary Ellen “Mamie” Phillips, 88, of Bear Creek, died Saturday, August 23, 2008, at her residence.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at Fair Promise United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. with Rev. Ken Buckingham officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Phillips was a Chatham County native, a daughter of Henry Thomas and Addie Jones Lambert, and was a homemaker and a member of Fair Promise United Methodist church. In addition to her parents, a sister, Maggie Lambert, also preceded her in death.

Surviving are husband Dabney Phillips of the home; sons Roger Phillips of the home, Roland Phillips and wife Carolyn, of Bear Creek; sister Oma Lee Beal of Bear Creek; grandchildren Angela P. Hughes and Mack Phillips both of Bear Creek; great-grandchildren Cameron and Taylor Hughes of Bear Creek; special nieces and nephew Linda Mangum and Laura Luck of Asheboro and Elizabeth Pilson and Jerry Beal of Bear Creek.

The Phillips family also extends a special thanks to faithful care-givers Elmo Phillips, Marie Barber, Margaret Caviness and Elizabeth Pilson.

Memorials should be directed to Fair Promise United Methodist Church c/o Lois Oldham, 6750 N.C.Hwy 42, Bear Creek, N. C. 27207.

Visitation was held Monday (8-25-2008) from 6 – 8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett.

JOHN L. HARDISTER

John L. Hardister, 70, of Bonlee died Wednesday (08-13-2008) at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation of Siler City.

Private family services were held.

Mr. Hardister was a native of Moore County and a retired timber worker.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Hardister of Siler City; brother, Ray Hardister of Bennett; sisters, Sue Baker of Raeford, Eula Burns, Elsie Phillips, both of Bear Creek, and Mary Frances Snuggs of Albemarle.

ROBERT G. “CORKY” JOURDAN

Robert G. “Corky” Jourdan, 77, of Gulf died Thursday (08-14-2008) at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday (08-17-2008) at Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Herring officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Jourdan was a native of Lee County and a member of Bethany Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School class. He was a retired supervisor from Cherokee Brick in Sanford.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Mashburn Jourdan of the home; daughters, Marsha J. Brown of Gulf, Brenda Jourdan of Apex; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church, 503 Alton King Road, PO Box 188, Gulf, NC 27256.

MARY WELCH POWERS

Mary Welch Powers, 64 of Bear Creek died Friday (08-15-2008) at her home.

Graveside services and burial was held at 2 p.m. Sunday (08-17-2008) at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Goldston with Rev. Gyles Saunders officiating.

Mrs. Powers was a native of Chatham County and a homemaker. She attended Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Alton Powers of the home; son, Doug Powers of Bear Creek, Danny Powers of High Falls; daughter, Karon P. Little of Bennett; brother, David Welch; sister, Doris Fields; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

IRENE BROWN COWARD

Irene Brown Coward, 76, of Staley died Tuesday (08-19-2008) at Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (08-21-2008) at Pleasant Grove Christian Church with Rev. Bruce Brown and Rev. Mark Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Coward was a native of Randolph County and a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church.

There are no immediate survivors.

Visitation was held Wednesday, (08-20-2008) from 7-9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, and other times, at the home of Brinda Bridges, 342 Pine Court Drive, Siler City.

MARVIN EVERETT JESSUP

Marvin Everett Jessup, 87, of Siler City, died Thursday, August 14, 2008 at his home.

Mr. Jessup was born on July 23, 1921 to the late Levi and Doasha Jessup.

He was a retired farmer. He proudly served his country in WWII. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his beloved dog, Abby. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jessup.

He is survived by two daughters, Carol Jessup Phillips and husband Newby of Siler City, Susan Jessup Loflin and husband Kenneth of Bear Creek; grandchildren, Mark Phillips and wife, Angie of Rougemont, Chris Hart and Jessica Loflin of Bear Creek; great-grandchildren, Lauren, Dalton and Sarah Beth Taylor of Rougemont; brothers, Lester Jessup of Burlington, Rex Jessup of Siler City, Richard Jessup of New Jersey, Levi Jessup, Jr. of King; sisters, Eva Ward of McLeansville, Inez Brown, Mary Creason, June Dixon, Rachel Johnson of Siler City, Linda Sink of Winston-Salem and Laura Hauser of Walkertown.

The family received friends Saturday, August 16, 2008 from 1:30 p.m. –

2:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 16, 2008 at Chatham Memorial Park, 13260 Hwy 64 West, Siler City with Rev. J. R. Bouldin officiating.

Memorials may be made to West Chatham Veterans Memorial Committee, C/O The Fidelity Bank, P O Box 564, Siler City, 27344.

SHERIDAN TAYLOR SCARTH

Sheridan Taylor Scarth, 17, resident of 2222 Glover Road, Durham, died Wednesday morning at his home. Born in Durham, he was the son of April Taylor Rogers and William Sheridan Scarth. He attended the Bethel Christian Center and was employed with Premier Painting and Home Improvement Company.

Sheridan was truly an outdoorsman who enjoyed baseball, water skiing, hunting and fishing. He could easily brighten a room with his warm smile and charisma. All who knew Sheridan will miss him greatly.

Surviving are his father, William S. Scarth of Durham; his mother and step-father, April Taylor Rogers and Allen Rogers of Chatham County; two brothers, Dylan Scarth of Durham, William Lee Scarth of Apex; one sister, April Nicole Mullins of Pink Hill; maternal grandparents, Sam and Linda Taylor of Durham; paternal grandparents, Jimmy R. Scarth of Laverkin, UT and Barbara A. Lezette of Hillsborough.

A Celebration of Sheridan’s Life was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 16,

2008 from the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Home with Pastor Don Westbrook presiding. Burial followed in Markham Memorial Gardens.

Friends visited with the family Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Sheridan’s father to help defray funeral costs.

JEAN MOORE POTEAT

Jean Moore Poteat of 76 Pine Forest Drive, Siler City, died Monday,

August 18, 2008 in the evening at her home surrounded by her family. She was a native of Madison, North Carolina, where she was a member of the First Baptist Church and served as its organist during the late 1950s. She was the daughter of the late Louise Peay Moore and Jake Moore.

Mrs. Poteat was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wake Forest University with a bachelor’s degree in religion. She continued her organ studies in the music department while there. She received her master’s degree in education from UNC-G, and began her thirty-year teaching career at Grimsley High School in Greensboro. After moving to Siler City with her husband, she taught math for over twenty-five years at Jordan-Matthews High School where she was the faculty sponsor for the Bible Club.

As an active member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City, she taught in the children’s department and later became a teacher in the Faith Sunday School class. She was a member of the handbell choir.

Mrs. Poteat had a great passion for life. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed Wake Forest sports, tennis, crossword puzzles, and her beloved dachshunds. She had a very rewarding teaching career and had fond memories of many special students. She was a faithful supporter of Relay for Life and had organized a team every year until 2007.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years Harold Poteat of the home, daughter Kelly and son-in-law Dan Perrone, grandson Matthew Daniel of Matthews, NC, son Dave and daughter-in-law Jenifer Poteat, granddaughters Samantha, Jordan, and Bailey Poteat of Apex, NC.

Her service will be at the First Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 21, 2008 conducted by the Reverend James P. Wall, Jr. A service of commitment will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Madison, North Carolina at 3:00 p.m.

Visitation will be on Wednesday evening at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m.

E. RUSSELL JOHNSON

E. Russell Johnson, 79, of 159 Laura Johnson Road, Pittsboro died Monday, August 18, 2008. Mr. Johnson was born April 22, 1929, the son of Eddie Winford and Laura (Johnson) Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was a native of Chatham County and a retired dairy farmer.

He was a member of Hickory Mountain Baptist Church. Russell was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Hilliard Johnson.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Boyd Johnson of Bear Creek; one daughter, Rose Johnson Ashley and husband, Curtis Ashley, Jr.; and one granddaughter, Laura Faye Ashley.

The graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Chatham Memorial Park, 13260 Hwy 64 West, Siler City, with Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. The family received friends at the home of Barbara Johnson, NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek and at the home of Rose and Curtis Ashley,

317 Laura Johnson Road, Pittsboro.

CARL F. PHILLIPS

Carl F. Phillips, of 700 Worth Street, Asheboro, died Monday, August 18, 2008, at Randolph Hospital. Carl was the son of Fred and Pearl Kivett Phillips and a true native son of the city of Asheboro, being the first baby born in the Asheboro Memorial Hospital on March 21, 1920. It was a fifteen bed facility and the only hospital in operation in the city at that time. It was located in the old Fisher Mansion on Sunset Avenue.

Carl grew up in Asheboro, graduating from Asheboro High School and attending UNC­CH. With the exception of one year when he was the office manager of Newton Rayon Mills located in Newton, and three and a half years during World War II, Carl was a lifelong resident of Asheboro.

During World War II, Carl was assigned to the Sixth Armored Division which served as one of the armored spearheads in General George S. Patton Jr.'s Third Army during five campaigns in Northern and Central Europe. In addition to the EAMET ribbon with five campaign stars, he was awarded the Bronze Star by the United States, the Croix de Guerre avec Etoile de Bronze by France and the La Croix de Guerre 1940 avec Palme by Belgium.

After military service Carl entered the accounting profession and was a practitioner for fifty-seven years (nineteen years as an individual practitioner and thirty-eight years with other accounting firms).

Carl was a fifty-six year perfect attendance member, a Paul Harris Fellow and a past president of the Asheboro Rotary Club; a member and past commander of Post 1159 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S.; a member of American Legion Post 45 and a member for over seventy years of First United Methodist Church of Asheboro.

Carl is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Helen Brown Phillips; his son Bob and wife Judy Bowman Phillips of Asheboro; son John and wife Debbie Mann Phillips of Cary; granddaughter Erin Phillips of Cary; grandson Ben Phillips of Redondo Beach, California; brother, Dr. Marvin Phillips of Thomasville; brother-in-law Clifton and wife Eula Brown of Huntersville; brother-in-law Howard Brown and wife Eleanor Brown of Lombard, IL and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 19, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro

The funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Susan Mitchell and Dr. J.C. Grose officiating. Burial followed at Oaklawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Home of N.C., Inc., P.O. Box 127, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450; or First United Methodist Church, 224 North Fayetteville St., Asheboro, NC 27203.
