MRS. SEVERINA ERFE SAGUIL
Mrs. Severina Erfe Saguil, 82, of Pittsboro, died Monday (05-05-2008) at Duke Hospice of the Meadowlands in Hillsborough.
A remembrance gathering was held at 11 a.m. Saturday (05-10-2008) at Griffin funeral service. Interment followed in Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City.
Mrs. Saguil was born in the Philippines and worked as a nurses’ aide.
Survivors include a daughter, Josie Santos of Pittsboro; son, Albert Saguil of Florida; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
MRS. HELEN MARIE SMITH HOWARD
Mrs. Helen Marie Smith Howard, 88, formerly of Bynum died Wednesday (05-07-2008) at Crescent Green Assisted Living in Carrboro.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday (05-09-2008) at Bynum United Methodist Church with Rev. Chuck Winner officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Howard was a native of Burlington, worked for JM Odell Mfg. in Bynum and later for NC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. She was a member of Bynum United Methodist Church.
No immediate survivors.

GATHUE E. ALSTON
Gathue E. Alston, 87, of Siler City died Friday (05-09-2008) at her residence.
Funeral services were held Tuesday (05-13-2008) at Mitchell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Kenneth Brooks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Alston was a native of Chatham County and a homemaker.
Survivors include daughters, Mildred Reives, Flossie Chance, Wilmer Tyson Sellars, all of Siler City, Janice Alston, Eva Hyde, both of Greensboro; son, Howard Alston of Pittsboro; sister, Bessie Siler of Siler City; brothers, Roland Eubanks, Willie Eubanks, Ronnie Clyde Eubanks, Roy Eubanks, all of Siler City; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
LAWRENCE HOYLE PETTY
Lawrence Hoyle Petty, 86, died Thursday, (05-08-2008) at his home in Troy, Illinois.
Funeral and burial services were held in Troy, Il. on Monday (05-12-2008).
He was born in Pittsboro and attended Pittsboro School. He served in the US Army in the Philippines during WWII, and worked many years at the University of North Carolina.
Surviving are three daughters, Susan Petty Kassing, Donna Petty Franquemont, both of Troy, Il., Teresa Petty of Wake Forest; two sisters, Nora Petty Shook of Newport, Leora Petty Ritter of Baltimore, Md; brother, Robert Harris Petty of Sanford; and three grandchildren.
ZULA GENEVA EASTER
Zula Geneva Combs Easter, 83, of Siler City passed away Monday (05-12-2008) in Chatham Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (05-15-2008) at St. Paul Church of the Brethren with Rev. Shelton Weeks, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Easter was a native of Carroll County, VA and a former resident of Galax, VA.
Survivors include sons, Larry Easter of Siler City, Elvin Easter of Delco; daughter, Melissa Byrd of Wilmington; brothers, Carlie Combs, J.D. Combs, both of Cana, VA; and five grandchildren.
W. HENRY SPARROW
Mr. William Henry Sparrow, 84, of Pittsboro, died Tuesday (04-29-2008) at his home.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday (05-02-2008) at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Wachs and Rev. Dennis Hill presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Sparrow was born in Orange County, attended Chapel Hill High School, and served in the US Army Air Corps. He was in the food services industry at various locations, having operated Henry’s Restaurant in Pittsboro for 14 years. He then worked in the cafeteria of Northwood High School. He was a founding member of the Carrboro Farmer’s Market and participated at the Fearrington Village Market.
Survivors include children, David Martin Sparrow, Ruth Sparrow Thomas, Mary Carol Sparrow, all of Pittsboro; step-children, Lisa Clark Stanley, Marie Clark Lipofski, both of Pittsboro, Michele Clark Reams of Durham; six grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

Mrs. Epsie P. Ratliff, 89, of Pittsboro died Tuesday (04-29-2008) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday (05-02-2008) at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev. Kenneth M. Brooks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Ratliff was a member of Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church.
No immediate survivors.
ISAAC “IKEY” WOMBLE STRAUGHN
Isaac “Ikey” Womble Straughn, 72, of Pittsboro died Saturday (05-03-2008) at his home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday (05-05-2008) at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Straughn was a native of Chatham County, a veteran of the U.S. Army, and member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. He was former owner and manager of Chatham Cleaners in Siler City.
Survivors include his wife, Lessie Scott Straughn; daughter, Betsy S. Mitchell of Pittsboro; son, Kerry Scott Straughn of Pittsboro, Ted Chapman Straughn of Durham; and six grandchildren.
LISTON RAY SMITH
Liston Ray Smith, 71, of Sanford, died Wednesday (04-30-2008) at his residence.
Graveside services and burial were held at 4 p.m. Saturday (05-03-2008) at Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Robert Capps officiating.
Mr. Smith was a native or Bladen County, served in the US Army and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Sloan Smith of the home; son, Tony Ray Smith; daughters, Javetta Clark, Jennifer Thomas, all of Bear Creek; stepsons, Ray Holland, David Holland; step-daughters, Kathy Holland, Becky Snyder, all of Sanford; sister, Eunice Shepherd of Crockett, VA; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Graham Jackson Williams, 56 of Staley, died Wednesday (04-30-2008) at Randolph Hospital, Inc. in Asheboro.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday (05-03-2008) at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Goldston with Rev. Gyles Saunders officiating.
Mr. Williams was a native of Harnett County and attended Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lynda B. Williams, of the home; daughters, Carrie Pritchard of Bennett, Tammy Blackstock of Greensboro: stepdaughter, Michelle Williams of Danville, VA; stepsons, Keith Williams, Paul Williams, both of Bristol, TN, Theodore Williams of Charlotte; sister, Shelby Dean of Bear Creek; brother, Billy Williams of Asheboro; four grandchildren and eight step -grandchildren.

Henry Franklin Garner, 77, of Ramseur died Thursday (05-01-2008) at Moses Cone Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday (05-05-2008) at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Bruce McLanahan officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Garner was a native of Randolph County, a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, and retired from Sears.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Atkins Garner of the home; son, Reggie Garner; daughter, Tara Goins, both Ramseur; brother, Charlie Garner of Cherokee; sisters, Clarice McCuistion of Ramseur, Dorothy White, Faye Hunt, both of Asheboro, Judy Cox of Randleman; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

David Otis Hicks, 37, of Siler City died Saturday (05-03-2008) at his residence.
A private family memorial graveside service will be held at Chatham Memorial Park at 3 p.m. Friday (05-09-2008) with Dr. Al Martin officiating.
Mr. Hicks was a native of Chatham County and worked as a welder.
Survivors include his son, Michael Shane Hicks of Greensboro; sisters, Sybil Ann Warren of Siler City, Becky Vess of Rock Hill, SC, Debbie Marley, Sandy Maness, both of Bear Creek;
brothers, Ricky Hicks of Thompson, GA, Ronnie Hicks, Michael W. Hicks, Jerry L. Hicks, all of Siler City and Jimmy Hicks of Snow Camp.

Esther Sharpe Richardson, 77, of Graham, died Sunday (05-04-2008) at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday (05-07-2008) at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Shelton officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Richardson was a native of Alamance County, a retired bookkeeper for the Alamance County School System, a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
Survivors include her husband, James A. Richardson; daughters, Donna Sue Snyder of Columbia, TN, Paula Annette Izaquirre of Tavernier, FL; sons, Ronald Reid Richardson of Bear Creek, James Wilbert Richardson of Rougemont; sisters, Brenda Stafford of Graham, Eudell Matthews of Hunt Valley, MD; brother, W. Dalton Sharpe of Graham; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
