Christine Cushman
Boiling Spring Lakes - Christine Ann Russell Cushman, 79 of Boiling Spring Lakes, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center.
Mrs. Cushman was born
November 13, 1934 in East Orange, NJ the daughter of the late Charles and Florence Russell. She was raised on Martha’s Vineyard and became a well know realtor in New Hampshire before retiring to Boiling Spring Lakes. Mrs. Cushman was well known for her ability to spend Saturdays finding treasures at yard sales. She enjoyed living on the big lake and paddling her kayak throughout the county.
She is survived by her high school sweetheart, husband of 63 years, Richard Austin Cushman; daughter Carolynn Ann Lee of New Hampshire; son Rick Cushman of Boiling Spring Lakes; daughter Kathleen Spence of Virginia; a sister Martha Peladeau of Rhode Island; four grandsons; and one granddaughter.
At Mrs. Cushman’s request, no services will be held.
The family would like to thank the many friends and neighbors for their love and support during this difficult time.

James Edward McDavid III (Jim)
Southport - James Edward McDavid III (Jim) was born
in Columbia, South Carolina December 31, 1933 and passed away on April 24, 2014. Jim was the son of the late James Edward and Lillian Bonnette McDavid. He has one sister the late Bonnie Ahrens, and a sister in law Anne Brennan Buller of Harrisburg, PA .
Jim married the late Joan Claire Brennan of Coaldale, PA and together raised four Children James, Marybeth, Patrick and Anne Maureen. Jim and Joan married in Columbia, SC on February 23, 1957 and were devoted to each other until Joan passed away August 23, 2006. Jim remarried Bettie Dunn Cranford of Lexington, NC in 2008, she was at his side when he passed away.
Jim Graduated from the Citadel in 1956 and was commissioned an Officer in the United States Marine Corps serving in Vietnam in 1965-1966 and received a Bronze Star for valor. Following his service he worked in several management positions with companies of Scott Paper, Mobile Al, RCA Andros Island Bahamas, General Electric in Memphis, TN and Lockheed Martin in Colorado Springs, CO and retired in 1994 to Huntersville, NC. Jim and Joan later moved to Southport, NC in 2003 to be near their daughter Marybeth.
Jim was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport. He is 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and former Faithful Navigator. Jim was a member the Sea Notes Choral Group.
Jim is survived by his wife Bettie McDavid of Southport, sons and wives, Jim and Amy McDavid of Fredericksburg, VA, Patrick and Jane McDavid of Mount Pleasant, SC, Daughters and husbands, Marybeth and George Ray of Southport and Anne Maureen and Chuck Cates of Galloway Twp, NJ, step son and wife Brent and Jamie Cranford of Cooleemee, NC, and step daughter and husband Cheryl and Paul Fox of Butler, TN. Jim has 12 grand children and 6 step grandchildren a great grand daughter and a 2 step great grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport. Military honors will be provided by the United States Marine Corps.
Jim will be greatly missed and his memory cherished. In lieu of flowers please donate to the ALS Association or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

Michael Ralph DeSantis
Southport - Michael Ralph DeSantis, 73 of Southport, passed away on April 21, 2014.
Mr. DeSantis was born
March 18, 1941 in Long Island, NY the son of the late Michael and Florence DeSantis. He was a loving husband, father and brother. Mr. DeSantis worked for 16 years for Lowes Home Improvement including 8 years in Southport.
Surviving is his wife Paulette DeSantis, a son Michael DeSantis of New York, a daughter Suzanne DeSantis Harvey of Ohio; three sisters Jeanette Zagarino, Ann Ormsby, and Elise Marinello; and 4 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 25, 2014 in the South Harbor Chapel, Fish Factory Road, Oak Island with Pastor Tim Stansbury officiating.

Ann Brock Duke
Southport - Ann Brock Duke, age 71, passed away at noon on April 22, 2014 at home, surrounded by her loving and adoring husband and children, following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born
in Eastern North Carolina to Marshall and Jenny Brock in 1942. She graduated from Meredith College and was a successful business owner, co-founding Indoor Plantscaping of Greensboro NC, which provided beautiful interior plant design for businesses in the Triad and Triangle areas for over thirty years.
married to William (Bill) Duke, she retired to a beloved historic home in Southport, NC where she and Bill continued to live until her death. With their combined skills, she a Master Gardener, they enhanced and beautified their historic property and created a welcoming and beautiful space for their family and friends. She delighted in her family, providing the best grandparent time and location for biking, sailing, and just being together. Enjoying her bridge group, garden club, book club, Cape Fear Yacht Club, yoga, and simply spending time with her many dear friends; she also was instrumental in the establishment of the Southport Waterfront Market, involved in the Dosher Memorial Hospital Annual Gala and volunteered in many other efforts for the benefit of her community.
She is survived by her husband, William O. Duke, three daughters Martha (JC) Poindexter of Roanoke VA, Virginia (Jeffrey) Mayone of Raleigh NC, Shannon (Amy Zeller) Lambeth of Decatur GA and three step-children Charlotte (Tom) Duke Englehart of Raleigh NC, Bill (Kellie) Duke of Raleigh NC, and David Duke of Wilmington NC. Gigi will be so very missed by all of her beautiful grandchildren – Taylor, Parker, Maggie, Matthew, Mary Virginia, William, Georgia, Emma, Wyatt, and Lucas.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport NC on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 11am and on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 1:30 pm at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, NC.

Evelyn Delaney Wharton
Southport - Evelyn Delaney Wharton, age 93, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2014 at Dosher Nursing Center.
Mrs. Wharton was born
September 4, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York. She was the daughter of the late Jeremiah Delaney and Emma Barnes Delaney. Evelyn moved here in 1992 from White Plains, New York and enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, reading, and being involved with her family. She was a sweet and loving person who had many friends. She will be missed by all who knew her. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husbands, Edward Ahlstrand and William Wharton and step-daughter, Martha Sue Eckert.
Survivors include her son, Donald Ahlstrand and wife Carol of The Villages, Florida; daughter Linda Gambino and husband Chuck of Boiling Spring Lakes; step-daughter, Sally von Solkema and husband Frits of Winter Park, Florida; grandson Edward Ahlstrand and wife Sarah of Arlington, Virginia; two granddaughters, Jill Gambino-O’Leary and husband Scott of Boiling Spring Lakes and Ashley Giere and husband Eric of Orlando, Florida; two great grandsons, Alex O’Leary and William Ahlstrand; 7 step grandchildren; and 11 step great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 am Friday, April 25, 2014 at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Southport.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service, Southport.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude and appreciation for the loving care she received from the wonderful staff at Dosher Nursing Center, with special thanks to Michelle and Connie.

John Polites
Southport - John Polites, age 83, of Southport NC, passed away April 15, 2014 at his home. John was born
in Perth Amboy NJ, December 13, 1930, to the late James and Sophia Polites. He was also preceded in death by his older sister, Joan Laskaris and cousin Peter Conomikes.
John graduated from Perth Amboy High School and attended classes at Middlesex County College. He owned and operated Polites Luncheonette, also in Perth Amboy, for 18 years and then was employed and retired from ECOLAB in Avenel NJ after 20 years. He enjoyed the horse races, card games, crossword puzzles and most importantly, he loved his family and many friends.
John is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Diane Lee Polites, daughters Michelle Tranter and Carlene Thomson, son James Polites, four grandchildren; Jacqueline Tranter, Kathryn Polites, John Polites and George Thomson. Also surviving are nephews, Peter Laskaris and James Laskaris, and cousin George Conomikes.
If friends would like to make a memorial contribution in John’s memory, his favorite charities are St. Jude’s Children’s Research Center and St. Joseph’s Indian School.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5269 Dosher Cut Off, S.E., Southport, NC 28461
Committal services will be held in Perth Amboy, NJ at a later date.
