Robert McBride Futrelle (Mack)

Southport — Mack Futrelle obit picRobert McBride Futrelle (Mack), of Southport, passed from this life on March 13, 2014.

Mack was born icon Aug 15, 1944 in Whitmire, SC. His father, Andrew Silas Futrelle preceded him in death. He grew up in Wilmington and later attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He served in the US Air Force with service in Vietnam.

He was employed by Southern Bell for many years living in Wilmington, Raleigh, and Charlotte, NC. Mack’s life — long love of the ocean began in 1958 when his dad won the Lions Club boat raffle. After that he was never without a boat. That love inspired his family and many others to share that enthusiasm, as they spent many happy times with him on the water.

He so loved his family and leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his wife of 45 years, Judith Clark Futrelle (Judy), his mother, Kathleen Futrelle Massengill; his children, Angela Futrelle Williams and her husband, Matthew Perry Williams, Matthew McBride Futrelle and his wife, Stacey Clark Futrelle, John Robert Futrelle and his wife, Wendy Rush Futrelle; his grandchildren Elizabeth Grayson Williams (Lisa), Matthew Clark Williams (Clark) and Samuel McBride Williams (Mack); his sister, Kathy Futrelle Britt, husband Gerald, brothers William Andrew Futrelle, wife Sue, and George Richard Futrelle; his brothers in law Donald and wife Daisy, Bill and wife Carroll, and sister in law Mary Akins and husband John.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport.

The family would like to thank the staff of Dosher Nursing Center for their wonderful care during Mack’s illness.

Memorials may be made to Airlift Hope or to the charity of your choice.

Peggy Garrison Benson

Oak Island — Peggy Garrison Benson, age 68, of Oak Island passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

Mrs. Benson was born icon in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on November 21, 1945, daughter of the late Marias Page Garrison and Katherine Peele James. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Virginia Beach school system until retirement. She loved shag dancing and was a member of the Virginia Shag Dancers Hall of Fame. Mrs. Benson was dedicated to her children, grandchildren and her church which was Bethel Baptist Church in Southport.

Survivors include her husband John Samuel Benson who would have celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary on her day of passing. Other survivors include her daughter Robin Page Theriault of Jacksonville Beach, Florida; son, Brian Edward Lukas of Oak Island; sister, Sylvia Hallock and her partner, Rosa Jimenez — Vazquez; step — brother, Bill James and wife Shirley of Winnabow; 4 grandchildren, Kristen Page Theriault, Trevor Alan Gwisz, Kali Nicole Lukas, and John Edward Lukas; and 1 great grandchild, Elijah Deneb Madera.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday March 22, 2014 at Bethel Baptist Church with Reverend Jeff Saggus officiating. A reception will follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 1628 N. Howe Street, Southport, North Carolina 28461.

John William Hewett, Jr.

Southport — John William Hewett, Jr., age 84, of Southport passed away Monday, March 10, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Hewett was born icon November 2, 1929 in Brunswick County, son of the late John William Hewett, Sr. and Ronie Sellers Hewett. He worked as a shrimp boat captain and ran several boats until he was 75 years old. Mr. Hewett loved sitting at the Southport waterfront completing his mind teaser puzzles and he also loved to tell old stories. He was a former member of Bethel Baptist Church. Mr. Hewett was preceded in death by his wife Doris W. Stevens Hewett, sons, Mike Hewett and Fred “Nugie” Hewett, daughters Katherine Beason and Belinda Hope Howie.

Survivors include sons, Kenneth William “Bill” Hewett and wife Teresa of Southport, John Anthony “Tony” Hewett and wife Cindy of Albemarle; daughters Barbara Buchacker and husband Jim of Charlotte and Rose Mary Perkins and husband Jerry of Asheville; two brothers Kenny Hewett of Hamlet and Warren Hewett of Florida; one sister, Carrie Medlin of Cary; several grandchildren, including Billie Hewett who was like a daughter, and several great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm Friday, March 14, 2014 at Peacock — Newnam & White funeral service Chapel with Reverend Jeff Saggus officiating.

Phyllis Ann Cameron Bradford

St. James — Phyllis Ann Cameron Bradford was born icon on December 28, 1929 to Alistair Cameron and Mary Oxendale Cameron in Ida Grove, Iowa. She was a 1947 graduate of Ida Grove HS and then graduated from Iowa State Teachers College. Beginning in 1949, she taught kindergarten in Denison, Iowa. During her teaching career she also taught in Ames, Iowa and San Diego, CA. In the mid 1950’s, Phyllis worked as a Director for the YWCA and in 1957, under the leadership/tutelage of Civil Rights legend Dorothy Height, she helped run the YWCA’s national conference in St. Louis. She graduated with a degree in Education from Winona State College, Minnesota in 1962.

She married John Norman Bradford in San Diego, CA on April 6, 1963. During their 50 plus year marriage, they lived in San Diego, CA, Ames Iowa, Missoula Montana, and Manhattan Kansas, before settling in Lexington, Massachusetts from 1969 to 1996, where they reared their two children and Phyllis substituted in the public schools for a number of years later working at Cary Memorial Library. After her husband’s retirement they moved to St. James, NC in 1996.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, daughters Janet Bradford of McLean Virginia and Margaret Bradford Pace of Wethersfield, CT, two sons in — law: Christopher Hudson and Paul Pace and four grandsons: Cameron and John Hudson and Andrew and Connor Pace, John’s brother’s Lynn Bradford and his wife Suzanne and William Bradford and his wife Kathleen. Her brother, William John Cameron and sister — in — law Joan Miller Cameron predeceased her.

The family is grateful to her loving friends and family for the many visits, cards and support and the compassionate care from Lower Care Fear Hospice. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The American Cancer Society.

The family will have a visitation from 2 to 4 PM on Thursday March 13, 2014 at Peacock Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service Southport . Interment will be at the Ida Grove Cemetery, Iowa at a later date.

Helen Elizabeth Meyer

Southport — Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Meyer, 99 of Southport, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2014 at Dosher Nursing Center.

Mrs. Meyers was born icon February 19, 1915 in New York City, the daughter of the late Josef and Anna Tatarewitz.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and had lived in Southport since 2002. Mrs. Meyer was preceded in death by her husband Charles Meyer.

She is survived by a son Donald Meyer of Southport.

Mrs. Meyer’s funeral mass will be private.

Walter Avent “Buck” Hurley, Jr.

Oak Island — Walter Avent “Buck” Hurley, Jr

Walter Avent “Buck” Hurley, Jr., age 89, of Oak Island, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Ocean Trail Nursing Center.

Mr. Hurley was born icon April 13, 1924 in Hillsborough, North Carolina, son of the late Walter Hurley, Sr. and Maude McBride Hurley. He worked for many years for Continental Bakery. Mr. Hurley loved to read and travel but most important was his family and spending time with them camping in The Outer Banks. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty — one years, Jean Hurley who passed away in 2007, a son Danny Bruce Hurley, several brothers and sisters.

Surviving are two daughters, Carla Martin of Southport and Cindy Everhart of Florida; seven grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 pm Friday, February 28, 2014 at Peacock — Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Charlie Carter officiating.

Clarence Russell “Russ” Morrison

Southport — Clarence Russell “Russ” Morrison of Southport passed away on February 23, 2014 at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick with his family by his side.

Russ was born icon on June 10, 1935 in Erwin, North Carolina. He was the only son of Clarence Morrison and Louise Morrison Scruggs. He graduated from Ashley High School in Gastonia, North Carolina and served four years in the United States Air Force as a radar instructor at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado.

Russ worked for Martin Marietta in Denver, Colorado as an electronic technician on the Titan missile sites. Russ moved his family to Las Vegas, Nevada where he worked at the Nevada Test Site on underground nuclear testing. In 1970, he moved his family to Long Beach and was the co — owner of Scruggs and Morrison Realty for twenty — six years.

Russ was always involved in serving his community. He was instrumental in starting the first little league baseball team on the island. He served four years as a Town Commissioner and was the chairman of the Erosion Control committee for many years. He worked for the Town of Oak Island in the town greenhouse raising and planting sea oats on the dunes. His greatest pleasure was volunteering on the construction team for Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity and helped in the construction of thirty homes. Russ was a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Island. He was preceded in death by his parents and step — father, James B. Scruggs.

Russ is survived by his wife of fifty — four years, Joan Morrison of the home and four children: Craig Morrison and wife Regina of Boiling Spring Lakes, Kelly Royal and husband Jay of Bolivia, Kristy Smith of Boiling Spring Lakes, and Lynn Reyes of Denver, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Ashley Braswell, Alexis Cheatham, Sara Hatch, Brooke Smith, Johnathan Schronce, Jeremy Shaver, and Shannon Angelo; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at First Baptist Church of Oak Island with Reverend Charlie Carter officiating. Burial will follow in Northwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Richard Colwell, Gary Lyles, Mike Johnson, Darby Whitlow, Ronnie Shannon, and Jerry Kennedy.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 pm Wednesday at the church or other times at the family home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, North Carolina 28422 or Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity, 4578 Long Beach Road, Southport, North Carolina 28461.
