Pamela L. “Sister Pam” Bumgardner
Southport — Pamela L. “Sister Pam” Bumgardner, age 57, of Southport passed away Saturday, February 1, 2014 at SECU Hospice of Brunswick in Bolivia.
Sister Pam was born
January 19, 1957 in Harrisburg, Illinois, daughter of Lorene Bolander and the late Bill Hooten. She was the director of Tiny Tots Day Care for many years. Sister Pam was a member of Lighthouse Pentecostal Church and was a great servant of the Lord; always putting the needs of others before herself. One of her greatest joys in life was being caregiver to her aunt, Pastor Betty McKendrie and Sister Eulene Lee who everyone knew as “Me — Maw.” The joy of her heart for the last five years was spoiling her grandchildren who called her “B.” She was preceded in death by a granddaughter Kenly Hope Bumgardner.
Survivors include her husband George E. Bumgardner of Southport; mother and stepfather Lorene Bolander and husband Guy of Varnamtown; one son, George E. Bumgardner, Jr. and wife Crystal of Soperton, Georgia; one brother, Reverend Mark Hooten and wife Doris of Boiling Spring Lakes; two sisters, Patti Payne and husband Gayle of Raleigh and Belinda Crawford and husband Mark of Varnamtown; two grandchildren, Jacy and Erica; five nephews, four great nephews, and one great niece.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at Lighthouse Pentecostal Church with Reverend Charles Drew officiating. Burial will follow in Northwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Peacock — Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service in Southport.

Edith Johnson Cochran
Southport — Edith Johnson Cochran, age 96, of Southport passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Dosher Nursing Center.
Mrs. Cochran was born
in Branchville, Maryland on April 27, 1917, daughter of the late Albert and Annie (Hofman) Johnson. She grew up in Branchville, Maryland and relocated to several locations, including Washington, DC and Silver Spring, Maryland before retiring to Ocean Pines, Maryland where she lived for 19 years. Mrs. Cochran then moved to Hampton, Virginia to live for eight years before moving to Southport in 2007. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Mrs. Cochran was preceded in death by her husband Jack A. Cochran.
Survivors include two daughters, Jackie Holman of St. James, North Carolina and Patti Pezzuti of Annapolis, Maryland; two brothers, Ginn Johnson of Frederick, Maryland and Lawrence Johnson of Clinton, North Carolina; three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
Burial will be private.

Desetta Boesser Loughlin
Southport — Desetta Boesser Loughlin died peacefully at her home in Southport on January 18th, at 99 years of age. She was born
Desetta Agnes Boesser on June 2, 1914, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Christian Jacob Boesser and Desetta Debrick Boesser.
Desetta (“Dee”) worked as a governess for one family from 1933 to 1944. She later graduated from North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Winston — Salem, N.C., and served in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps. She then worked for many years as a pediatric nurse at Babies Hospital in Wilmington, N.C.
Dee Boesser married James D. Loughlin, a Cape Fear River pilot in Wilmington, North Carolina. They moved to Southport, N.C. Sadly, Jim died just several years following their marriage. Dee was also preceded in death by her brothers, Christian Mark Boesser and Burton C. Boesser, and by her niece, Wilhelmina (“Mina”) Boesser Ferguson, who lovingly cared for Dee for many years.
Dee is survived by another niece, Mrs. Mary Paparazo of Goldsboro, N.C., and her family, and by a nephew, the Venerable Mark Alan Boesser of Juneau, Alaska, and his family.
Mrs. Loughlin was buried beside her late husband at Northwood Cemetery.

Jacqueline D. Ely
Oak Island — Jacqueline D. Ely
Jacqueline D. Ely, age 88, of Oak Island passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Brunswick Novant Medical Center.
Mrs. Ely was born
December 12, 1925 in Charleston, West Virginia, daughter of the late Herman Dillard and Dorotha and Rex Riffe. She worked as an executive secretary for the state of West Virginia. Mrs. Ely was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Earl Richard “Dick” Ely and grandson.
Survivors include one son, Earl Richard Ely, II and wife Janice of Oak Island, North Carolina; three daughters, Kitty Ramos and husband Terry of Greenville, North Carolina, Patricia Burton and husband Ralph of South Charleston, West Virginia, and Dee Lewis and husband Bill of Leland, North Carolina; special cousin Pat Dewey of St. Albans, West Virginia; 9 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2:00PM Monday, January 27th, 2014 at Oak Island Presbyterian Church with Reverend Walter Taylor officiating. Inurnment will be held at Cunningham Memorial Cemetery in St. Albans, West Virginia at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Oak Island Presbyterian Church, 1503 E. Oak Island Drive, Oak Island, NC 28465 or Dosher Nursing Center, 924 N. Howe St. Southport, NC 28461.

Mary Catherine Long “Mammie”
Winnabow — Mary Catherine Long “Mammie”, 82, of Winnabow went home to her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 22, 2014.
Mammie was born
to the late Charles and Caroline Hughes on November 21, 1931 in Ash, NC. She married her love, Don Laverne Long, Sr. in 1946. Mammie was a founding and lifetime member of Peace Memorial Baptist Church in Winnabow, North Carolina. She was known by all her family for her fried chicken, pork chops, and cornbread. Mammie never knew a stranger and would welcome all who came to her front porch. She had a contagious smile and her hugs were never ending. Mary is preceded in death by her husband Don Laverne Long, Sr.; son, Ronnie Long, Sr., and grandchildren Brittany Brendle, Colby Scearce, and Ronnie Long, Jr.
We all look forward and will cherish the day when we hear our Mammie say once again, “Come here and give Mammie some sugar!”
Mammie was a devoted mother who raised 6 children: Ronnie Long, Marylin Lewis (Junior), Janet Murray (Roy), Cathy Scearce (Frank), Donnie Long Jr. (Debbie), and Richard Long (Dee)
She was a devoted and loving grandmother to 11 grandchildren, Michael Long (Stephanie), Ronnie Long Jr., Valerie Stanley (Steve), Denise Lewis (Becky), Jeremy Lewis (Hope), Heather Robertson (Chris), Kevin Long (Lacie), Savanna Taylor (Stephen), Colby Scearce, Brittany Brendle, Tyler Long.
Mammie also had 11 great grandchildren, Katilyn, Madison and Sierra Long, Justin Long, Jamie Stanley, Winter Lewis, Lilly and Sophie Roberston, Connor and Trenton Long, Gage Taylor, and one great great — granddaughter, Aleah Long.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, January 24, 2014 at Peace Memorial Baptist Church with Reverend Doug Fairfax and Reverend Hoyt King officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00pm Friday at the church.

Joyce Ann Malpass
Leland — Joyce Ann Malpass, age 80, of Leland passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014.
Mrs. Malpass was born
August 6, 1933, daughter of the late Edward and Annie Spooner Thomasson. She was a member of Lighthouse Pentecostal Church. Mrs. Malpass was preceded in death by a son, Barton Keith Malpass, a brother, Edward Thomasson, and a sister, Mary Rackley.
Survivors include her husband James Linwood Malpass of the home; two sons Linwood Gene Malpass of the home and James Dexter Malpass and wife Daun of Leland; three daughters, Joyce Christine Hyatt and husband Thomas of Bolivia, Pam Braun and husband Keith of Winnabow, and Beverly Lopez of Bolivia; one sister Beulah Yarboro of Wilmington; 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 3:00 pm Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Lighthouse Pentecostal Church with Reverend Charles Drew officiating. Burial will follow in Lighthouse Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Keith Braun, William Lewis, Adam Malpass, Alex Malpass, Joe Lopez, and Garrett Chappell.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 2 — 3pm at the church.
