James E. Brown

Southport — Mr. James E. Brown age 65 of Southport died Sunday January 12, 2014.

Mr. Brown was born icon in Hyden, Kentucky on September 10, 1948 and was the son of James Edgar and Edith Muncy Brown. He owned and operated James Brown Inc. for 36 years. Mr. Brown was a member of Town Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Vincent E. Brown.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Beverly West Brown; a daughter, Amy Brown Tyler and husband Michael James Tyler; grandchildren, Jennifer L. Cumbee, Nikole L. Brown, R. Vincent Brown; a sister, Patricia Howard and husband Kenneth “Eddie” Howard; a niece, Tracy McCrary; a nephew, Kenneth “Bubba” Howard.

The family will receive friends at Peacock — Newnam & White funeral service, Southport on Wednesday January 15, 2014 from 6 — 8 pm.

Graveside services will be held Thursday January 16, 2014 at 11am at Northwood Cemetery, Southport

Jimmy Champion

Oak Island — Jimmy Champion, age 83, of Oak Island died Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Ocean Trail Nursing Center in Southport.

Mr. Champion was born icon April 16, 1930 in Shelby, North Carolina, son of the late Eber and Ruth Smawley Champion. He worked as a plumber for many years. Preceding him in death were his wife Margaret in 2009, his brothers, and sisters.

Survivors include his two sons, Ernie and wife Suzanne of Oak Island and David and wife Wendy of Charlotte; one daughter April Mattacionne and husband Nick of Clemmons; 5 grandchildren, Ella, Zach, Josh, Nicole, and Seth.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 pm Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Northwood Cemetery in Southport.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the food pantry of your choice.

John F. Shortridge Jr.

Oak Island — Mr. John Frank Shortridge Jr., son of the late John Frank Shortridge, Sr. and Julia Lusk Shortridge of Hamlet, North Carolina, passed away the evening of Saturday, January 11, 2014. He is survived by a large and loving family, including his wife Martha “Sissy” Shortridge; his children, Maggie Shortridge of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, Julie Shortridge and her husband Ehren Hill of Washington, DC, and Johnny Shortridge and his fiancée Ciara Gardner of Nashville, Tennessee; his step — children Laurie and Daniel Hamrick of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, Robbie and Ginger Rhyne of Wilmington, NC, and Ginger Davenport of Savannah, GA; his grandchildren James Holroyd, Mercer and Bennett Rhyne, Reed Davenport, and Jacob, Lindsey, and Seth Hamrick; his siblings Hatsy and Phil Youtz and Mary Darling; as well many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends

John was born icon in Winston — Salem, N.C. on May 7, 1947 and grew up in Hamlet, NC. His sense of humor and warm personality made him many childhood friends who remain close to this day. He graduated from Hamlet High School and North Carolina State University with an engineering degree, before serving his country in the United States Army in Vietnam. He married Linda Adams of High Point, NC, the mother of his children, in 1970. John, Linda, and his eldest daughter Maggie moved throughout the country while John worked for Southern Railway, enjoying camping trips and family vacations at the beach. After settling down in Cincinnati, he founded SRECO Transportation Services Inc. (later Interstar North America, Inc.) in 1983, an intermodal transportation services provider that grew to serve the entire United States, as well as Mexico and Canada. He spent many happy days playing with his children and their friends at the Terrace Park pool, enjoying family vacations along the Carolina coast, and rooting for the Cincinnati Reds. He grew to love the beach at Isle of Palms, SC, generously buying property there so that his extended family could vacation there together every summer and making many close friends in the Charleston area. In 2005 he married Sissy Cashion, a life — long friend from Hamlet, NC. He and Sissy settled down on Oak Island, NC, enjoying a life full of travel, fulfilling work, loving family and great friends.

John’s life was defined by the tremendous love he had for his family and friends. He was adored by everyone who crossed his path for his warm personality, caring and generous nature, wonderful sense of humor, and unrelentingly positive outlook on life. While he will be missed terribly, he leaves us with an abundance of joyful memories which will never be forgotten.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 at 2pm, at Ocean View United Methodist Church in Oak Island, NC.

Thomas H. “Tom” Florkiewicz

Southport — Mr. Thomas H. Florkiewicz

Mr. Thomas H. Florkiewicz, 59, of Southport died Saturday January 11, 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Tom was dispatched in Schenectady, New York on October 10, 1954 and was the son of the late Edward John and Marion Jeanne Wickham Florkiewicz Floyd. Tom was a devoted community servant to the city of Southport serving in many capacities for many years. He was a member of Southport Fire Department, Southport Rescue Squad and served with Southport Police Department. He loved the Fourth Of July Festival and could always be seen at the waterfront enjoying the beauty of the Cape Fear River and it’s scenery . He was an avid photographer and also enjoyed all the movies filmed in Southport. Tom was a retired Fire Inspector with Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point. He loved to teach Fire Prevention and Safety every year with the Southport Fire Department going to the schools in the county and surrounding areas. He was devoted to the city of Southport and the people of the town. He gave his whole life to charity’s involving the Southport Fire Department, Southport Rescue Squad and being an auxiliary policeman with Southport Police Department. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Jones Florkiewicz ; his best, worst, and only daughter Ariel R. Florkiewicz and fiance’ Joshua German; two sisters, Carol Norwood and husband Ron of Oviedo, Fl., Anne Castro and husband O.G. of Lexington, SC and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday January 15, 2014 at 3pm at the Chapel of Peacock — Newnam & White funeral service, Southport with Reverend Charles Drew officiating. Burial will follow in the Northwood Cemetery with Fireman’s Honors accorded by the Southport Fire Department.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday January 14, 2014 from 6 — 8 pm at the funeral home.

Kelli Darnell Ellison

Oak Island — Kelli Darnell Ellison, age 44, of Oak Island passed away Thursday, January 9, 2014.

Kelli was born icon in Gastonia, North Carolina on June 25, 1969, daughter of Mervin and Cecelia Goodson Darnell. She was a loving mother and also loved her animals. Kelli was loved by all and will be truly missed.

Survivors include her parents Mervin and Cecelia Darnell of Oak Island; her companion of 14 years, Mark Edwards; two sons, Kevin Ellison and Brennan Shaw, both of Southport; and one brother, Dale Darnell of Oak Island.

A memorial service will be held on the beach in the spring.

Iris Ann Clinard Morris

Boiling Spring Lakes — Iris Ann Clinard Morris, 75 of Boiling Spring Lakes passed away on Friday, January 3, 2014 in the SECU Hospice House in Bolivia. She was born icon October 6, 1938 in Wilmington the daughter of the late Francis and Helen Pugh. Mrs. Clinard Morris was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had been a Dosher Hospital Volunteer. She was a loving mother, wife, and neighbor who did a lot of work for her church. She was preceded in death by her husband Cliff Morris.

Surviving is her two sons Charles J. Daw II of Redondo Beach, CA and Ronald F. Daw of Anaheim; CA a daughter Debra Heaton of Santa Ana, CA; a brother Richard Pugh of Leland; eleven grandchildren and one great — grandchild.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 14, at 7:00 pm in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 8264 River Rd, Southport, NC 28461.

Rose Ferrandino

Southport — Rose Ferrandino was born icon Rose Santaniello in Brooklyn, New York on October 24, 1913. Her parents were Luigi and Assunta Santaniello who were born icon in Avellino, Italy. In 1948, Rose married Louis Ferrandino and they lived primarily in Queens, New York. In later life, they lived in Blacksburg, Virginia and Steubenville, Ohio. Before moving to Southport, Rose lived in New Market, Maryland.

Rose is survived by three children: Donna Ferrandino (husband Steven Simon) of Southport, North Carolina; Susanne Ferrandino (husband Dennis Gibbs) of Cary, North Carolina; and Linda Butler (husband George Butler) of Indian Trail, North Carolina. She has six grandchildren: Alyson and Andrew Butler, Brianna and Kira Anderson, and Natalie and the late Gabrielle Simon. Her two great grandchildren are Avery Jury and Skyler Simon.

Rose spent her last two years of life at Dosher Nursing Center in Southport, North Carolina. Her family wishes to express its gratitude to the staff at Dosher for the excellent care Rose received until the end of her life.

Rose was a homemaker, enjoying cooking, needlework, music, dogs, and spending time with family. She and Lou travelled extensively to Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Europe with family members. She passed gently on July 24, 2014 at the age of 100 years and 9 months, and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

A memorial service was held on Friday, July 25, 2014 at Peacock — Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service in Southport.

Donations may be made in Rose’s name to Dosher Nursing Center, c/o Michelle Lawrence, 924 N. Howe Street, Southport, NC 28461.
