Kenneth Wade Pennell

Kenneth Wade Pennell, 51, of Wilson, died Friday. Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Tuesday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bailey Town Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening immediately following the service at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.
Surviving are his wife, Rhonda Willis Pennell of Rocky Mount; his aunt, Sandra Johnson of Morehead City; two uncles, James Carter High of Chesapeake, VA and Clinton Whitley of Wilson; several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Pennell and Phyllis High Williford.

Edward Thomas “Tommie” Etheridge
June 1, 1931 – November 7, 2011
Edward Thomas “Tommie” Etheridge, 80, of Wilson died peacefully at home Monday. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Rock Hill Cemetery, Lamm Road, Wilson. The Rev. Jeff Smith, the Rev. Patsy Spence and the Rev. Mark Pridgen, Jr. will officiate.
The family will receive friends Tuesday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway immediately following the service and other times at the residence.
He was a retired Wilson County farmer. He was a member of Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church and also attended Northside Community Baptist Church in Rocky Mount where he was baptized.
Mr. Etheridge is survived by his wife, Beulah Carlyle Etheridge of the home; two sons, Junior Etheridge and friend, Judy, and Terry Etheridge and wife, Rene all of Wilson, two daughters, the Rev. Patsy Spence of Wilson, and Jeanette Fulghum of Holly Ridge; seven grandchildren, David Etheridge and wife, Angel of Wilson, Brookie Jo Cummings and husband, Travis of Lucama, Matthew Spence and wife, Nicole of Kenly, Holly Belle Viverette and husband, Shane of Kenly, John Spence of Lucama, Allen Fulghum of Holly Ridge and Landon Etheridge of Wilson; three great-grandchildren, Emma Ann Etheridge and Owen Thomas Etheridge both of Wilson and Gabriel Luke Spence of Kenly; sisters, Ruby Wells of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Margaret Hoard of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Ethel Peele of Tarboro and, a brother, Louis Etheridge and wife, Ernestine of Wilson; special friends of family, cousin, Ray Etheridge and wife, Doris and Kathryn Lamm.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Raymond Etheridge and Nora Pridgen Boswell Etheridge; two sisters, Dorothy Faye “Dot” Webb and Barbara Ann “Bobbie” Kelsey.

Mark Steven Raper
March 27, 1962 – November 9, 2011
Mark Steven Raper, 49, of Lucama died Wednesday. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wildwood Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Raper Family Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Ball will officiate.
The family will receive friends 6 – 9 p.m. Saturday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson and other times at 5963 Little Rock Church Road, Lucama.
Mr. Raper is survived by his wife, Donna Moore Raper; a daughter, Courtney Raper and a son, Brooks Raper both of Wilson; a step-daughter, Jessica Bass of the home; his mother, Martha Evonne Raper of Lucama; a brother, William Chris Raper and wife, Sonya of Wilson; a niece, Kristen Raper; a nephew, Tyler Raper and his grandmother, Martha “Mema” Lamm of Lucama.
He was preceded in death by his father, George “Pete” Raper.
Helen Mae Corbett Williams
July 5, 1917 – November 6, 2011
Helen Mae Corbett Williams, 94, died at the Brian Center of Wilson Sunday. Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Evergreen Memorial Park. Minister David Clements will officiate.
Mrs. Williams is survived by three great-nephews, John Lucas, David Lucas, and Thurman Lucas Jr.; special caregivers, Teresa Ruffin, Dooley Ezzard and Don Williams.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Williams and special caregiver, Thurman Lucas

Gail “Valentine” Taylor Mercer
February 13, 1939 – November 8, 2011
Gail “Valentine” Taylor Mercer, 72 of Kenly died Tuesday. Memorial services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.
The family will receive friends Friday at funeral home immediately following the service and other times at 1165 Scott Road, Kenly.
Gail retired from Griff’s Steak Barn after 40 years of service. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt who will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Mrs. Mercer is survived by four daughters, Angie Reeder of Wilson, Lisa Fortson and husband, Joey of Winston Salem, Hope Moore and husband, Dale of Kenly and Mandy Barnes and husband Jerry of Pikeville; five grandchildren, Justin Bissette and wife, Denise of Wilmington, Josh Bissette and wife, Candice of Sims, Shyanne Barnes and Brad Barnes both of Pikeville and Ryan Moore of Kenly; three great-grandchildren, Cody Lawson, Alyssa Brantley and Tyler Bissette; a sister, Clara Taylor Langley and husband, Edbert of Fountain, and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Waldo Mercer; her parents, Paul and Clara Bailey Taylor; son-in-law, Danny Reeder; sisters, Marie Lord and Janet Walston; brothers, Ray Taylor, Joseph “Bunk” Taylor, Paul Taylor, Jr., Marvin Taylor and Donnie Taylor.

Rachel Daniel Bass
February 4, 1914 – November 4, 2011
Rachel Daniel Bass, 97, of Lucama died Friday, November 4, 2011. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Stanhope Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. William Bussey will officiate. There will be a private burial.
The family will receive friends 6 –8 p.m. Sunday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.
Born in Nash County, February 4, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Justus Gilbert Daniel and Cornelia Ricks Daniel.
She graduated from Spring Hope High School, attended Peace College, and graduated from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College). She was a retired school teacher, having taught in Nash and Wilson County Schools for 33 years. She was a member of the Stanhope Baptist Church, serving as church clerk and Sunday school teacher for many years. She was active in WMU at Stanhope and First Baptist in Wilson. She was a member of the Wilson County Retired School Personnel, Democratic Women of Wilson County, American Legion Auxiliary, AARP, NCAE, NEA, and a member The Friendship Sunday School class at First Baptist in Wilson and the Salt Council.
Surviving is her loving husband and best friend of 66 years, Dr. E. Hugh Bass. She is also survived by two nieces, Peggy D. Looney of Rocky Mount and Connie D. Guthery of Charlotte; two nephews, Bert Daniel of Stanhope, and Justus Gilbert Daniel, III of Charlotte, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Justus Gilbert Daniel, Jr. and Elmer R. Daniel, and a nephew, David R. Daniel.

Evelyn Little Burress, 91, of Fountain died Thursday. Funeral services will be conduced at 2 p.m. Saturday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Queen Anne Cemetery, Fountain. The Rev. Rex Edwards will officiate.
The family will receive friends 1 –2 p.m. Saturday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson and other times will be at 5959 West Lang Street, Fountain.
Mrs. Burress is survived by two daughters, Lois Amerson and husband, Bill of Fountain and Karlette Whitley of LaBelle, Fla.; a son, Carlton Burress and wife, Barbara of Arnett, W. Va.; seven grandchildren, Cynthia Webb and husband, Randy, Diane Dillon and husband, Garland., and Michelle Jarrell all of Beckley W. Va., Patricia Turner, Phyllis Skinner and husband, Jamie all of Wilson; Deborah Tripp and husband, Jimmy of Saratoga, and Bonnie Armistead of West Palm Beach, Fla.; eleven great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dow Burress; her parents, Eddie and Lina Walston Little, and a brother, Dick Little.
