Clifford Henry Davis
May 4, 1929 – September 20, 2011

Clifford Henry Davis, 82, of Wilson died Tuesday. Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Thursday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. The Rev. Bobby Fletcher will officiate. A committal service will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Maplewood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 5:30 – 7 p.m. Thursday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway.

Clifford spent most of his career in automotive sales. He loved baseball, and played in a semi pro league in North Carolina and in Germany while he was serving in the U.S. Army.
He was a devoted member of Evansdale United Methodist Church, and was a loving husband, father, and “Papa” to his family.

Mr. Davis is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Jean Davis; a daughter, Leigh Ann Pruden and husband, Chuck of Wilson; two sons, Gary Davis and wife, Renee¢ of Billings, Mont., and Jeffrey Davis and wife, Dawn of Kinston; eight grandchildren, Joshua Davis, Jeremy Davis, Maja Davis, Creighton Davis, Mackenzie Davis, Addison Davis, Chip Pruden, and Meredith Pruden; one great-granddaughter, Lyrica; five sisters, Ruth Jenkins, Frances Lucas, Doris Burdette, Eleanor Rose and Linda Perry, and a special caregiver, Anna Knight.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Evansdale United Methodist Church Building Fund, 4334 Evansdale Road, Wilson, NC 27893.

Eunice Kaye Denton Boyette
November 20, 1931 – September 18, 2011

Eunice Kaye Denton Boyette, 79, died peacefully on Sunday at Parkwood Village surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway. The Rev. Steve Strickland will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.

She was a member of Grace Baptist Church having served as bereavement chair, and also was a past senior regent of the Wilson Chapter of the Women of the Moose. She was retired from both the Credit Bureau and Wilson County Department of Social Services.

She is survived by a daughter, Pam Boyette of Wilson; two sons Royce Jordan Boyette Jr. of Wilson and Robert Allen Boyette and wife, Wanda of Zebulon; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Jean Medlin and husband, J.B. of Rocky Mount, and Kay Carter and husband, Richard of Wilson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Royce Jordan Boyette; her parents, Simon Allen Denton and Edna Cone Denton; and her special aunt, Iva Denton Trevathan.

William David "Rabbit" Thorpe Jr.
October 31, 1936 – September 16, 2011

William David "Rabbitt" Thorpe Jr. of Sims, 74, died Friday. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. The Rev. Ray Well will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service and at other times at the home.

Mr. Thorpe retired from Owens and Minor after 35 years and was a life long member of the Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Nell McKeel Thorpe; a daughter, Carol Thorpe and friend, Joe Duncan of Clayton; a son, William David Thorpe III and wife, Joy of Kinston; four grandchildren; nine step children; thirteen step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed the Wilson Moose Lodge 989, PO Box 7016, Wilson, NC 27895.

Jerry Andrew Hummer
November 5, 1939 – September 14, 2011

Jerry Andrew Hummer, 71, of Elm City died September 14, 2011. A funeral service will held 2 p.m. Saturday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson. The family will receive friends 6 – 8 p.m. Friday at Joyner’s Funeral Home and other times at 6046 Stagecoach Rd.

Mr. Hummer retired after 47 years of employment with Saint Gobain Container.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Toler Hummer; two daughters, Sherri Sturgess and husband, Bruce of Cleveland, Ohio, and Tuwanna Waters of Elm City; three granddaughters, Amanda Sturgess, Maghan Sturgess, and Heidi Crocker; three grandsons, Christopher Hummer Duncan, Joshua Hummer Duncan, and Daniel Draper; four great-grandchildren; sister, Luella Dibatiste of Dunkirk, IN; several nieces and nephews.

Sarah “Lottie” Stallings May
July 14, 1910 – September 15, 2011

Sarah “Lottie” Stallings May, 101 years old, passed away on September 15, 2011, at home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 18, 2011, at Bailey United Methodist Church, 12437 Green St., Bailey, NC. Interment will follow in the Bailey Town Cemetery. Dr. Branson Sheets will officiate, assisted by Rev. Eldrick Davis and Rev. Paul Tedder.

The family will receive friends Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson, NC and other times at 11345 South NC 581, Bailey, NC.

Sarah was born icon July 14, 1910, in Edgecombe County, to Sheriff Wright L. and Celia Jenkins Stallings. She grew up in Pinetops, one of 12 siblings. She graduated from South Edgecombe High School, salutatorian of the class of 1927, and graduated from ECU (then E.C.T.C.) in 1929. She later completed her education with a degree in Elementary Education from Barton College, then Atlantic Christian College. She began her career of 35 years at Coopers School in Nash County, where she was the oldest living member of the original faculty. She completed her career in education at Bailey Elementary School.

She was loved and respected by her many students, sharing much insight about life with her pupils. These are some of her words of wisdom: “You are building the house you are going to live in”; “If a task is once begun, never leave it till it’s done, be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all”; “Many hands make light work”.

Among her special honors: Lay leader of Bailey United Methodist Church 1998, Grand Marshall of Bailey Christmas Parade 2007, and induction into the ECU Education Hall of Fame 2010. During 2011 a stained glass window, in her honor, was placed in Bailey United Methodist Church. She received The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, and an article about her was in the Scope Magazine of Barton College in 2011. Bailey United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, held a special place in her heart. She held offices in the United Methodist Women and Ruth Underwood Circle. She was Sunday School Superintendent, a Sunday school teacher, and she served on the church council.

Always active in her community, she was a member of the Bailey Bridge Club, board of directors of Wesley Privette Library, Virginia Dare book club, American Legion Auxiliary, Bailey Chapter # 159, Order of the Eastern Star, Golden Year’s Club, and a docent for the Country Doctor Museum.

Among her many talents were art, poetry, and flowers. She enjoyed art classes at Wilson Community College for 20 years. She shared the fruits of her labor with many family and friends. Poetry was a special passion for her. She wrote numerous poems for family and friends honoring special occasions in their lives. She loved arranging and sharing flowers from her yard.

She cherished family gatherings, especially holidays and birthdays. The “Cousins” reunion in March and family reunions in June, when she made her famous corn pudding, were very special to her. She took great pride in telling family stories and family history.

Mrs. May is survived by her daughters: Celia Glover of Bailey, and Betsy May of New Bern; a granddaughter, Michelle G. Laws and husband, Greg of Apex; a grandson, Kevin D. Glover and wife, Eileen of Savannah, Ga.; and four, great-grandchildren, Joshua Glover, Andrew Glover, Rachel Laws, and Will Laws.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theophelus Celcirt “T.C.” May, son-in-law, Dwight Glover, special nephew Dick Stallings, all eleven of her siblings, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jimmy Ray Mumford
April 5, 1941 – September 13, 2011

Jimmy Ray Mumford, 70, of Lucama died peacefully at home Tuesday. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Spring Hill Presbyterian Church, 7335 Springfield School Road, Lucama. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. Dr. Sefton Strickland, Rev. Charles Love and Rev. Ray Barnhill will officiate.

The family will receive friends 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson and other times at the residence.

He was a member of the Lucama High School Class of 1959. He was an Elder of Spring Hill Presbyterian Church and a member of Lucama Masonic Lodge #527. He was a driver for Pilot Freight Carriers and Thurston Motor Lines. He worked for Grizzard Funeral Home and Shingleton Funeral Home. Jimmy was owner and operator of B & M Log Cabin Restaurant and B & M Construction in Lucama. He also worked for NASE Health Insurance.

Mr. Mumford is survived by his wife of 51 years, Faye Love Mumford; two daughters, Rebecca “Becky” Hellard (Mike) of Elm City and Lisa M. Williams (Brad) of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren, Anna Hellard, Courtney Williams and McKenzie Williams; a sister, Elaine Smith (Bill) of Concord and a brother, Barney Mumford (Bonnie) of Garner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim Mumford, Jr. and Doretha Lamm Mumford.

A special thanks to the following for their compassionate and excellent care: Dr. Dudley Anderson and staff, Dr. Thomas Hooper and staff, Dr. Keith Lerro and staff, Dr. Peggy Metts and staff, Dr. George Newsome and staff, Wilson County Home Health, WilMed Home Care and Hospice, and Wilson Medical Center physicians and staff.
