FOREST CITY — Mr. Max William Mosley, 75, of 2985 U.S. Highway 221, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Autumn Care Center in Forest City. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Ron Boone and Ad Hopper officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family received friends Monday at The Padgett & King Mortuary. Memorials may be made to Sulphur Springs Baptist Church Building Fund, 221 Sulphur Springs Road, Forest City, NC 28043; or to the American Diabetes. Association, 3109 Poplarwood Court, Suite 125, Raleigh, NC 27604-1043.

Gertrude Cohen
CHARLOTTE — Mrs. Gertrude Posner Cohen, 97, formerly of Shelby, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry S. Cohen, and a daughter, Rella Cohen Kort. She is survived by daughter, Anita Cohen Grey of Charlotte; a son, Melville Cohen of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Steven Cohen, Jeff Cohen, Doug Cohen, Adam Cohen, Stacey Weber, Mindy Jaffe, and Paula Kommor; a godson, Jack Leader; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was buried on Thursday in Hebrew Cemetery in Charlotte, with her grandsons and godson as pallbearers. Memorials may be sent to Temple Israel, 4901 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226. Harry and Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Calvin Camp
RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Calvin Trent Camp, 32, of 112 Levi St., died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Frye Regional Medical Center of Hickory. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at St. Gabriels Church with Father Scott Shumate officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at Thompson Brothers Funeral Home of Forest City.

Mae Baynard
SPINDALE — Mrs. Mae Philbeck Baynard, 87, of 215 Pleasant St., died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Spindale United Methodist Church with the Revs. Dan Ramsey and Joseph Fulk Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Crowe’s Mortuary. Memorials may be made to Spindale United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 241, Spindale, NC 28160; or to Rutherford County Hospice, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.

Henry Black
RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Henry Leroy Black, 72, of 245 Robertson Road, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Autumn Care Nursing Home. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Danny Black and Reid Parker officiating. Burial will be in Huntley Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the Funeral Home.

Herman Melton
BOSTIC — Mr. Herman Daniel Melton, 86, of 520 Waters Road, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home.

Beatrice Barnes
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Beatrice Laws Barnes, 87, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at McDowell Nursing Center. Formerly of Kings Mountain, she retired from textiles as a spinner. She was preceded in death by her father, J.D. Laws; her mother, Cora Lee Robinson Laws; and her husband, Jesse Barnes. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard and June Laws of Waco and Ronald Barnes of Gastonia; a sister, Ruby Moss of Kings Mountain; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral is today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Lutz-Austell Funeral Home in Shelby, with the Rev. Robert Dimmick officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.

Roy Jolly Sr.
UNION, S.C. — Mr. Roy Chandler Jolly Sr., 76, of 125 Toney Road, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Born in Union, S.C., on Nov. 26, 1925, he was a son of the late Milton Humphries Jolly and Mattie Irene Young Jolly. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church, where he formerly served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher and was counselor for the Royal Ambassadors for 19 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as an Army Staff Sergeant in the Philippines. He was a member of the Textile Baseball League and was known as “Knuckle Ball.” He was retired plant supervisor for Bloomsburg Mill in Monroe. He is survived by his wife, Alice Ingle Jolly of the home; two daughters, Joann Jolly Mills of Mooresboro and Patty Jolly Coleman of Union; two sons, Roy C. Jolly Jr. of Greenville, S.C., and Terry L. Jolly of Union; three sisters, Nell J. Crawford and Lillian J. Bentley of Union and Margaret J. Gregory of Delray Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Raymond Jolly and C.B. Jolly of Union; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Hebron Baptist Church, with the Revs. David Toney and Jerry Ford officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, with military honors. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home, and at other times at the home.

Jerry Waters
GASTONIA — Mr. Jerry Gale Waters, 59, of 602 East 8th Ave., died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of Pauline Blanton Waters of Shelby and the late Arthur Lee Waters. He was a former employee at ATS Transmissions. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Demples D. Waters of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Jesse Burnette of Charlotte; four sons, Jerry Scott Waters of Lowell and Vincent Lee Holland, Joseph Frankewitz Jr. and Jamie Frankewitz, all of Gastonia; a brother, Ronald Waters of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Ronnie Edmondson of Boiling Springs; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Colonial Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia, with the Rev. Bob Withers officiating. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at the funeral home, 312 W. 2nd Ave., Gastonia. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, P.O. Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054.

Alton Ivey
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Alton Ivey, 81, of 812 E. Ridge St., died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at home. Born in Macon, Ga., he was the son of the late George and Lillie Osborne Ivey. He was a retired textile worker and an active member of First Baptist Church of Kings Mountain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Ivey and Paul Ivey. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Hord Ivey of Kings Mountain; a son, Thomas Alton Ivey and his wife, Sophia, of Crete, Greece; a daughter Judith Ivey Robbs and her husband, Eddie, of Kings Mountain; four sisters, Sarah George, Mildred Parker, Marian Cloninger and Hazel Poteat, all of Kings Mountain; six grandchildren, Sarah Ann Ivey, Leah McGraw, Carolina Holland, Tammie Ivey, Shelley Human and her husband, Rusty, and Amy Yarborough and her husband, Chris; and six great-grandchildren, Joshua Human, Grace Yarborough, Hope Yarborough, Briana Holland, Alexis Holland and Michael McGraw. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, with Dr. John Sloan officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Harris Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 786, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

‘Jack’ Joyner
SHELBY — Mr. Carlos “Jack” Wilson Joyner, 88, of 717 Ridgeview Drive, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Elmore Joyner The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, with Dr. John Boggs and the Rev. Joe Reeves officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Jim Lutz, 801 Phillips St., Shelby.

FOREST CITY — Mr. William Max Mosley, 76, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at AutumnCare Center in Forest City. Funeral arrangements will be announced by The Padgett & King Mortuary.

CHARLES FRANKLIN HARRY III
SHELBY — Mr. Charles Franklin Harry III, 65, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Grover, he was the son of the late Charles Franklin Harry Jr. and Estelle Johnson Harry. He was president of Grover Industries and an active community leader serving multiple terms as a county commissioner. He was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church, a member of the Dover YMCA Endowment Board, a board member of the Heineman Research Center and a past chairman and current board member of the Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was also a founder of the former Carolina State Bank and board member of the now First Charter National Bank, as well as serving on many other corporate and community boards. He was a Mason at the State Line Masonic Lodge #375 and a life member of the Scottish Rite and of the Oasis Shrine Temple, Charlotte. He is survived by his wife, Ann Gray Lutz Harry; a daughter and son-in-law, Robin Harry and Loyd B. Smith Jr. of Shelby; a son and daughter-in-law, Franklin Scott and Elizabeth Ellis Harry of Wilmington; two brothers, O. John Harry of Grover and James A. Harry of Gastonia; a sister, Jean Harry Francis of Grover; and four grandchildren, Loyd Baxter Smith III, Wesley Gray Smith, Elizabeth Pearson Harry and Bayard Bishop Harry. A graveside service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Grover Cemetery with Masonic Rites by Stateline Masonic Lodge #375. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church with Dr. Luke Harkey and the Rev. Allen Huff officiating. The family received friends Saturday at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Dover YMCA at 411 Cherryville Road, Shelby, NC, 28150 or to the Heineman Research Center, in care of Carolinas Medical Center, 1000 Blythe Blvd., Charlotte, NC, 28232.

MAXINE WILLIAMS
SPINDALE — Mrs. Maxine Cantrell Williams, 66, of 402 Ohio St., died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Obici Hospital in Suffolk, Va. Arrangements will be announced by Crowe’s Mortuary and Chapel.

MAUDIE ROBERTS
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Maudie Mae Wehunt Roberts, 89, of 317 N. Dilling St., died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at her home. She was born May 14, 1912 in Barrow County, Ga. She was retired from Sade Mill in Kings Mountain. She is preceded in death by a daughter, Anne Carfrey. She is survived by a daughter, Virginia McCurry of Bessemer City; six grandchildren, Vera Taylor, Gina Black, Sheila Neal, Judy McCurry, Jeri Loftin and Kenny Towery; eight great-grandchildren; and eight great- great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Brackett officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Greene Funeral Service Westside Chapel.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Mrs. Janette Marie Putnam Crotts, 70, of 2144 Celanese Road, and formerly of Shelby, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Piedmont Medical Center. A graveside service will be today at 3 p.m. at Grandview Memorial Park on Cherry Road with Dr. Jerry Sosebee officiating. The family will receive friends after the service. Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel in Rock Hill is handling arrangements.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Mr. Adolphus Surratt, 86, formerly of Lincoln County, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002. Arrangements will be announced by J.W. Gill and Sons Funeral Home.

RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Jimmy Bruce Splawn, 63, of 151 Debby Lane, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte. The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Evangel Fellowship Church with the Revs. Roger Gosnell and Terry Howell officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Crowe’s Mortuary and Chapel.
