John W. Stephens

The funeral for John Warrick Stephens Jr., 75, formerly of Leasburg, who died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Roxboro Nursing Center, was conducted at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Leasburg United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeanne Neal. Burial with Masonic rites was in Leasburg Community Cemetery.
Mr. Stephens was a native of Caswell County, the son of the late John W. and Nancy Newman Stephens. His late wife was Elaine White Stephens.
He was retired from the Flue-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corp.
He was a member of Leasburg United Methodist Church.
A Mason, he was a member of Person Masonic Lodge 113.
Surviving are two sons, Jack Stephens of Roxboro and Mike Stephens of Simpsonville, S.C.; a daughter, Suzanne S. Baker of Durham; five grandchildren, Allison, Jay, Will, Katie and Kendall Stephens.
Pallbearers were Oakley Davis, Steve Tatum, Bobby Fulcher, Danny Holt, G.B. Holt and Jay Stephens.
Memorials may be made to Leasburg UMC, P.O. Box 98, Leasburg, NC 27291.

Jeannette C. Carver

The funeral for Jeannette Cole Carver, 93, of 1404 Longhurst St., who died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, in Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 10, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Jackie Carver. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Carver was a native of Scotland County, the daughter of the late George and Dora Genes Cole. Her late husband was Henry B. Carver.
She was retired from the former Longhurst Cotton Mill.
She was the oldest member of North Roxboro Baptist Church.
She played the piano for more than 50 years during which time she accompanied silent movies in Roxboro.
Surviving are a daughter, Maxine Cash of Timberlake; two sons, Randy Carver and H.B. (Pete) Carver Jr., both of Roxboro; a sister, Frances C. Gentry of Roxboro; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., today, April 8, in Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Pete Carver, 168 Summitt St., Roxboro.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Poindexter, Travis Poindexter, Tracey Carver, Kevin Chambers, Matt Brown and Jay Poindexter.
Memorials may be made to North Roxboro Baptist Church, P.O. Box 3067, Roxboro, NC 27573, or to Helena UMC, P.O. Box 66, Timberlake, NC 27583.

Elizabeth M. Pate

The funeral for Elizabeth Ann Murray Pate, 61, of 820 Lyle St., who died Saturday, April 5, 2003, in her home, was conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Ken Childers.
Mrs. Pate was a native of Rockingham County, the daughter of Vera Massey Murray Kimball of Florida, who survives, and the late Walter Murray.
She was a retired sales clerk.
Surviving in addition to her mother are four sons, Robbie Pate, Glen Pate, Ronnie Pate and Carl Pate, all of Florida; two daughters, Debora Duncan of Roxboro and Lisa Pate of Florida; a brother, Charles Murray of Utah; a sister, Priscilla Mulligan of Florida; and 10 grandchildren.

Jerlian W. Smith

MEBANE – The funeral for Jerlian Williams Smith, 76, of 4647A White Level Rd., Mebane, who died Saturday, April 5, 2003, in her home, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, April 9, in St. James Baptist Church in Leasburg. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Shepherd Carver and Beatrice Bumpass Williams. Her late husband was Sylvester Smith. Her late son was Ike Smith.
Surviving are two sons, Harold Smith of Queens, N.Y. and James Smith of the home; three daughters, Katie Haith, Frances Smith and Carolyn Jones, all of Mebane; two brothers, Walter Williams of New York and Harry Williams of Mebane; two sisters, Clara Williams and Beatrice Gibbons, both of Burlington; 19 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Blackwell Funeral Home.

Numond Stewart

The funeral for Numond Stewart, 84, of 1416 Jackson St., who died Sunday, April 6, 2003, in Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, April 9, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Deirdre Britt and the Rev. Jimmy Pulliam. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Stewart was a native of Person County, the son of the late Emmitt Luther and Virginia Loyd Stuart Stewart.
He was retired from Merion Cricket Club, Haverford, Pa., after 23 years of service.
He was a member of Longhurst United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Lois Coleman Stewart; two sons, Lynwood D. Stewart of Pennsylvania and Richard A. Stewart of Pittsboro; four daughters, Sylvia S. Arnold, Cheryl S. Walker and Gail Stewart-Allen, all of Virginia, and Glenna S. Boyer of Pennsylvania; a sister, Onie F. Stewart of Roxboro; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Stewart, Lacy Stewart, Steve Stewart, Ronnie Epps, Norman Talley, Chris Walker, Alvin Coleman and Elmo Coleman.
Memorials may be made to Longhurst UMC, 291 Providence Rd., Roxboro, NC 27573.

Addie S. Wade

The funeral for Addie Shotwell Thomas Wade, 91, of 56 Kendrick Dr., who died Monday, April 7, 2003, in Person Memorial Hospital following an extended illness, will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 10, in Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Tommy Robertson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Wade was a native of Halifax County, Va., the daughter of the late Bunnie and Nannie Sue Wilborn Shotwell. Her late husbands were Sam Thomas and Robert Wade. Her late sons were Ruffin Thomas and Gus Thomas.
She was an employee of the former Longhurst Cotton Mill.
She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Ruth T. Kendrick of Roxboro; two sons, Edward Thomas of Roxboro and Clyde Thomas of Scottsburg, Va.; two brothers, Ernest Shotwell of Maryland and Junior Shotwell of Roanoke Rapids; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Dean Thomas, Steve Thomas, Ricky Kendrick, Mickey Thomas, Jason Thomas, Don Davis, Dale Kendrick, and Merritt Jones. Deacons of Mill Creek Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., today, April 9, at the church and at other times at the home of Ruth Kendrick, 56 Kendrick Dr., Roxboro.
Memorials may be made to Mill Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 1890 Mill Creek Rd., Roxboro, NC 27574.

S. Ballard Ellis

The funeral for S. Ballard Ellis, 75, of 2751 Antioch Church Rd., Timberlake, who died Monday, July 7, 2003, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 10, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Billy Lynch. Burial will be in Surl Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Ellis was a native of Person County, the son of the late James Marion and Maude Evans Ellis. His late wife was Doris Bradsher Ellis.
He was retired from Roxboro Cotton Mill.
Surviving are two sons, Stephen Ronald Ellis and James Donald Ellis, both of the home; and a sister, Clarice Lee of Roxboro.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., today, July 9, in Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Charles Lee, Cecil Lee, Roy Childers, Herman Roberts, Bobby Dunkley, and Lee Oakley.

Perry B. Gregory

DURHAM - A memorial service for Perry Bruce Gregory, 51, who died Thursday, July 3, 2003, will be conducted at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, July 10, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by Elder Pete Hendrix. Burial will be in Flat River Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Gregory was a native of Person County, the son of Alice Allen Melton of Roxboro, who survives, and the late G. Perry Gregory.
He was an electrician in Durham.
Surviving are two sons, Matthew Dave Gregory and Spencer James Gregory, and their mother, Beverly Gregory, all of Durham; a sister, Pamela G. Dollar of Durham; a half-brother, G. Wayne Little of Roxboro; and his paternal grandmother, Annie Chandler Gregory of Roxboro.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service and at other times at the home of his mother, Alice A. Melton, 379 John Allen Rd.

Linwood Harris

The funeral for Linwood Harris, 50, of 509 Broad St., who died Thursday, July 3, 2003, in Person Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness, was conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, July 7, in Obies Chapel United Holiness Church by Elder Thomas Headen. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Harris was a native of Person County, the son of Beatrice Mitchell Harris of Roxboro, who survives.
He was a member of Obies Chapel United Holiness Church.
Surviving are his wife, Rosaline Fuller Harris; four daughters, Lintanya Harris of Largo, Md.; Lindine Creek of Hope Mills, Crystal Harris of Washington, D.C.; and Daria Little of Charlotte; four brothers, Clarence Harris and Bobby Harris, both of Roxboro, Harold Harris and Will Harris, both of Montgomery, Ala.; a sister, Ernestine Atkinson of Dillwyn, Va.; and six grandchildren.

Adrian L. Hunt

The funeral for Adrian Leroy (Al) Hunt, 80, of 208 Barnette Ave., who died Monday, July 7, 2003, in Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston, Va., will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 10, in Roxboro Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnny Richards. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, July 10, in Forest Hill Memorial Park in Lexington.
Mr. Hunt was a native of Davidson County, the son of the late David Bradley and Leona Palmer Hunt. His late wife was Geneva Leonard Hunt, and his late son was William Bradley Hunt.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Hunt moved to Roxboro in 1960 to manage the A&P grocery store. He retired from A&P after 42 years of service as a store manager and supervisor.
He was a member of Roxboro Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.
Surviving are two daughters and their spouses, Bonnie H. and Reid Davis of Roxboro, and Judy H. and Mark Gourley of Goldsboro; two sons and their spouses, Gary W. and Brenda Hunt of Cumming, Ga.., and Richard T. Hunt and Nancy Pace of Hillsborough; three brothers, Fred Hunt and Ralph Hunt, both of Lexington, and Jim Hunt of Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Virgie H. Warfford and Donese H. Sink, both of Lexington; and five grandchildren, Drew Henderson Davis of Oxford, Leigh Palmer Davis of Chapel Hill, Stephen Mark Gourley and Mary Frances Gourley, both of Goldsboro, and Kistler Kathleen Hunt of Hillsborough.
Nephews will be pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, July 9, in Brooks and White Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Forward by Faith Building Fund, Roxboro Baptist Church, P.O. Box 348, Roxboro, NC 27573.

Pauline Pettiford

The funeral for Pauline Pettiford, 80, of 566 Dick Holeman Rd., Timberlake, who died Saturday, July 5, 2003, in Durham Regional Hospital following an extended illness, will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 10, in New Hope Person Baptist Church by the Rev. W.L. Richardson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Pettiford was a native of Person County.
She was a member of New Hope Person Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Marilene Williams and Geraldine Thomas, both of Roxboro; four sons, Glenn Pettiford of the home, Bryce Pettiford, Dewey Pettiford and Leonard Pettiford, all of Roxboro; two sisters, Lizzie Leathers and Mamie Brooks, both of Durham; 26 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., today, July 9, in Cunningham & Nelson Funeral Home.

Minnie P. Puett

The funeral for Minnie Frances Powell Puett, 91, of 693 Providence Rd., who died Tuesday, July 08, 2003, in Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, July 11, in Longhurst United Methodist Church by the Rev. Blanche Gilbert and the Rev. Robbie Biddix. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Puett was a native of Halifax County, Va., the daughter of the late John and Rorie Dunnaway Powell. Her husband was the late Millard F. Puett.
She retired from Roxboro Cotton Mills after more than 40 years of service.
She was a member of Longhurst Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Fill Puett of Timberlake; two daughters, Mary Frances P. Boswell of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Joyce P. Lamberth of Roxboro; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, July 10, in Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Shane Puett, Chris Puett, David Reaves, Paul Dorman, Gordon Powell, Edgar Puett, Larry Clayton and Sandy Smith.

Roy A. Gentry

YANCEYVILLE - The funeral for Roy Allen Gentry, 57, of 335 Hines-Hatchett Rd., Yanceyville, who died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond, Va. after a period of declining health, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 31, in Community Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Smith, the Rev. Buddy Hall and the Rev. Wayne Jones. Burial, with military rites, will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Gentry was a native of Person County, the son of the late Howard C . and Elizabeth Melton Gentry. His late sister was Shirley G. Knott.
A graduate of Bethel Hill High School, he was employed with Kroger Foods for 32 years.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Vietname War, serving from 1966 to 1968.
He was a member of Community Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Foy W. Gentry; a daughter, Melissa Rene Gentry of Raleigh, a step-daughter, Sandra Cobb of Yanceyville; a step-son, Tony Anthony of South Boston, Va.; two sisters, Dorothy Dickerson and Elsie G. Elliott, both of Roxboro; a brother, Steve Carlton Gentry of Roxboro; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be today, July 30, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Community Baptist Church and at other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Harrelson Funeral Service in Yanceyville.

Mary Louise P. Johnson
The funeral for Mary Louise Poole Johnson, 58, who died suddenly on Monday, July 28, 2003, in Greensboro, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, in Mill Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of the late James Lewis and Esdell Paylor Poole.
She was co-owner of Johns Printing & Publishing Co. Inc.
Surviving are her husband, William I. Johnson; a son, Adrian Keith Johnson of the home; four sisters, Freelon Davis of Uniontown, Pa., Cleo Smith of New Rochelle, N. Y., Lucy Williams of Upper Marlboro, Md. and Doris Addison of Roxboro; four brothers, James Poole Jr. of Paterson, N. J. , Charlie Poole of Washington, D. C., Joseph Poole of Roselle, N. J., and Theodore Poole of Roxboro.
Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at Hester, Whitted & Daye Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her brother, Theodore Poole, 276 Jessie Hicks Rd., Roxboro.

Robin B. Nunn
The funeral for Robin Bumpass Nunn, 32, of 210 Shale Circle, who died Friday, July 25, 2003, in Duke University Medical Center following an extended illness, was conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 29, in New Hope Person Baptist Church by the Rev. W.E. Richardson. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Nunn was the daughter of Annie P. Bumpass of Roxboro, who survives.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Terry Nunn; a daughter, Terica Nunn of the home; a sister, Angie Carter Bumpass of Semora; three brothers, Erwin Jr. Bumpass, Eric Jr. Bumpass and Ernest Jr. Bumpass, all of Roxboro; and her maternal grandmother, Annie Pettiford of Roxboro.
Arrangements were by Cunningham & Nelson Funeral Home.

Charlie D. Oakley
The funeral for Charlie D. Oakley (Charlie Brown), 52, of Ole Cabin Rd., who died Sunday, July 27, 2003, in UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, was conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 29, in Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Jeffery Raymond. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Oakley was a native of Orange County, the son of Minnie Clayton Oakley of Roxboro, who survives, and the late Elder Wallace Oakley.
He was employed with Collins & Aikman Corp. for 23 years and with Amoco Food Shop and O'Neil's Quick Stop for 10 years.
He was a member of Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Linda Ellis Oakley; a daughter, Tonya Lynn Oakley of Winston-Salem; a son, Timothy David Oakley of Roxboro; a brother, Bobby Oakley of Roxboro; two sisters, Deanie O. Wade and Elaine O. Gravitte, both of Roxboro; and two grandchildren, Tiffany Lynn Oakley and Taylor Michele Oakley.
Pallbearers were Randy Gravitte, Chris Oakley, Ken Wade, Chris Gentry, Greg Gentry, and John Ellis III.
