NELLIE SPENSER JONES
KINSTON -- Nellie Spencer Jones, 91, of 1302 Rhem St., died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999 at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson, NC. Mrs. Jones was born in Rockingham and was a life long resident of Kinston. She was a member of Queen Street United Methodist Church for over 75 years where she was an active member of the United Methodist Women, the Fidelis Sunday School Class, and the Senior Adult Group of the Church. She was also a member of the Kinston Woman's Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was the widow of Levin Kirkman Jones Sr.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999 at Queen Street United Methodist Church. Rev. Randall Baker and Rev. Dr. James Donald Phillips officiating. Interment, Pinelawn Memorial Park.
Visitation, 7-9 p.m. Monday and other times at the residence.
Surviving: daughter, Bettie Jones Phillips of Henderson; son, Levin Kirkman Jones Jr. of Kinston; sisters, Edna Kuehn of Longmont, CO., Dorothy Keel of Jacksonville, NC; grandchildren, Margaret Phillips Heifferon of Greenville, NC, Mary-Beth Phillips Ritchie of Wilmington, DE, Donald Kirkman Phillips of Henderson, NC, Levin Spencer Jones of Kinston, NC; great-grandchild, Logan Andrew Ritchie of Wilmington, DE.
Memorials may be made to Queen Street United Methodist Church in lieu of flowers.

RENA W. KIRK
FERNANDINA BEACH, FL -- Mrs. Rena W. Kirk, 90, passed away Friday, January 8, 1999, following an extended illness. She was born June 3, 1908, in Springs Creek, NC. Mrs. Kirk of Newport, NC was residing with her daughter and son-in-law, Lucille and Mac Garner of Fernandina Beach, FL.
She is also survived by a son, Larry Kirk of Welaka, FL, and eleven grandchildren: Rodney Garner of Virginia Beach, VA, Dr. Tod Garner of Fernandina Beach, FL, Deborah Kirk and Dennis Kirk of Greensboro, NC, David Kirk of Hertford, NC, Denise Doman of Crestview, FL, Kenny Kirk, Kevin Kirk and Kelly Kirk of Goldsboro, NC, Kerry Kirk of Greenville, NC, and Karen Mical of Graham, NC; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Mathew West and Bob West of Durham, NC, Mayhue West of Raleigh, NC; and one surviving sister, Carlyle Dickens of Enfield, NC.
During her lifetime, Mrs. Kirk achieved much in the service of the Lord and her fellowman. She was a past recipient of the North Carolina Woman's Auxiliary Life Membership in recognition of her long time work with the group. She served the Eastern District Woman's Auxiliary Convention as vice-president for four years and president for six years. She was a member of the Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church in Newport, NC, and taught Sunday School for 23 years. She also served many years in the church choir.
Mrs. Kirk's attitude toward service was summed up in an article she wrote for the Woman's Auxiliary Devotion: "We show our love to others because of the love we have in our hearts--to be a Christian means we will constantly be looking for opportunities to go and do the things that please God and bring joy to others." She believed "when we do the small things in life to the very best of our ability, the rewards are great and pleasing."
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church in Newport, NC. Burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. on Monday at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, NC.

CHARLES M. LEWIS SR.
YOUNGSVILLE -- Charles M. Lewis Sr., 70, of 100 Ryans Run, died Saturday, January 9, 1999.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Franklin County, 1937 N.C. Hwy 39 N, Louisburg, N.C. 27549; or to the American Cancer Society, 620 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, N.C. 27603.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m.,one hour prior to the service, January 12, 1999 at the funeral home.

JANE T. LONG
TARBORO -- Jane Taliaferro Logan Long, 80, died in Tarboro on Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999. The daughter of Conrad Travis and Mary Jarman Logan, she was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 19, 1918. She spent her youth in Harrisonburg, Virginia where she graduated from Madison College (now James Madison University) with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma and Kappa Delta Pi Sororities. Following graduation she taught school in Warrenton, Virginia.
Mrs. Long became a resident of Tarboro, NC in 1946 and was employed there for twenty years as office manager of Edgecombe County Memorial Library. A member of Calvary Episcopal Church, she served as treasurer, teacher, chorister and altar guild member. She was also a member of the Episcopal Church Women, The Tarboro Woman's Club, the Edgecombe Garden Club and the Board of Visitors of Kanuga Conferences. An enthusiastic supporter of the Boy Scout movement, she played an active role in the local Cub Scout Program.
Mrs. Long is survived by her husband, Peter James Long, of 614 N. Howard Circle, Tarboro; two sons, Peter James Long Jr. of North Augusta, SC and Thomas Lewis Long, of Rosewell, GA; a granddaughter, Vicki Louise Landenberger of Cockeysville, MD; three grandsons, Peter James Long III of Charlotte, NC; Andrew Lewis Long and Thomas Nelson Long, both of Atlanta, GA; a great-grandson; James Todd Landenberger of Cockeysville, MD; two brothers, Joseph Talfourd Logan of Easton, MD; and Conrad Jarman Logan of Tarboro; as well as nieces and nephews.
A burial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in Calvary Episcopal Church with the Rev. William Smyth officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to: Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, U.N.C. Chapel Hill, NC; Edgecombe Homecare and Hospice, 2213 St. Andrew St., Tarboro or Calvary Episcopal Church, Tarboro, NC.
The family will receive friends in Clark Hall, Calvary Episcopal Church on Monday, January 11 from 7-9 p.m.

RUTH W. MASSEY
ZEBULON -- Ruth Williams Massey, 76, of 605 Proctor Street, died Saturday.
Graveside funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Massey Family Cemetery.
Surviving: husband, Harold Massey of the home; sisters, Margie Cox of Rolesville, Mary Bunn of Louisburg, Sue Pearce of Richmond, Va.; brother, Charles Williams of Rolesville.
Mrs. Massey's body will lie in state at Massey Funeral Home prior to the service on Tuesday.
Arrangements by Massey Funeral Home, Zebulon, 269-6600.

R. GERALD McLAMB
BENSON -- Mr. Robert Gerald McLamb, 71, of 263 Beasley Rd., died Sunday at the VA Hospital in Durham.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Unity Advent Christian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Billy Keene. Burial will follow in Banner Chapel Church Cemetery.
Mr. McLamb was born December 2, 1927 in Johnston County to the late Valton and Lessie Temple McLamb. He was a retired auto and tractor mechanic. Mr. McLamb was a US Army Veteran of WWII and a member of the Banner Post 109 American Legion. Mr. McLamb was a member of Unity Advent Christian Church.
Surviving include wife, Zadie Lee McLamb and; daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and William R. "Bill" Johnson of Benson; sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Dianne L. McLamb of Benson, Donnie and Julia N. McLamb of Benson, Ronnie and Donna W. McLamb of Dobson; sister, Dorothy Dot B. Tart of Benson; brother, James "Jim" Hiram McLamb of Wilmington; seven grandchildren, John Louis McLamb, Chris Johnson, Tracey McLamb, Amy McLamb, Justin McLamb, Austin McLamb and Karie McLamb; five great-grandchildren, Johnathan McLamb, Dustyn McLamb, Colby McLamb, Dylan McLamb, and Taylor McLamb.
Family will be at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson from 7-9 p.m. Monday and other times at the home.

LORNA M. MOORE
RALEIGH -- Mrs. Lorna Mudge Moore, 102, died Friday, January 8, at Mayview Convalescent Center.
She was the widow of Hyman H. Moore who died in 1962.
Born in Waltersville, Miss., Mrs. Moore spent most of her youth in northwest Pennsylvania. The family moved to North Carolina in the early 1900's. Mrs. Moore's first job was with the telephone company in Washington, NC. She was transferred to Raleigh in 1920. She was married icon in 1922. She later worked for a number of years with the Oak City Laundry and Dry Cleaners.
During World War II, Mrs. Moore was a regular volunteer with a USO club in downtown Raleigh where soldiers with weekend leaves were entertained and provided places to stay in area homes. Many spent more than one weekend at the Moore home. Some stayed in touch with Mrs. Moore for yeas, sending postcards and Christmas cards which she collected in scrapbooks.
Mrs. Moore remained intensely active well into her 90's, participating in Golden Years Club events, bowling, playing bridge and engaging in a variety of needlework and craft hobbies. She also traveled extensively in the United States and made one trip to England.
She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church where she belonged to Circle 9.
She had no children but played second mother to a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. At the time of her death she had four great-great-great nieces and nephews.
Surviving immediate nieces and nephews include: Harley and Marilyn Mudge and Virginia and Sidney Knott of Raleigh; Shirley and Chuck Hayes of Fuquay-Varina; Earl Herndon of Pittsboro; Ginny Weeks of Pikeville; Tommie Anne and Carl Campbell of Woodbridge, VA; Nancy and Ed Barden of Lancaster, PA; and Melanie Mudge of Sewanee, TN.
Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Monday, January 11, at Mitchell Funeral Home on St. Mary's St. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mitchell's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Montlawn.
The family wishes to express appreciation to Annie Oglesby who, as helper and friend, enabled Mrs. Moore to live independently until after her 101st birthday.

RALPH F. OWENS
RALEIGH -- Ralph F. Owens, 71, of Raleigh, died Sunday, January 10, 1999.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Hope Cemetery in Bonlee, N.C.
Surviving are son, David R. Owens and wife, Deloris of Raleigh; daughter, Anne Owens Thames of Elizabeth City, and their mother, Catherine Owens; son-in-law, Paul Thames and four grandchildren, Michael and Ian Owens and Vanessa and Nick Thames.
Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street.

WILLIAM W. PERSON
RALEIGH -- WilliamW. Person of 528 Dorethea Drive, son of the late Levin Person and Mrs. Mary Edna Alston Person, born January 20, 1924 in Vance County, was called home on Monday, January 4, 1999.
Mr. Person moved to Wake County at an early age and attended Wake County public schools. In January 1942 he was inducted into the US Army. During his three years, service, he received the Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was employed with State Distributors, which later became Empire of North Carolina for 45 years.
Memorial service will be held Monday, January 11, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Haywood Funeral Home chapel.
He leaves to cherish his memory a son, William P. Williams of Oxford; sisters, Mrs. Berdie P. Hunter of Raleigh, and Mrs. Annie E. Smith of Durham; three nieces, a nephew and a host of other relatives and friends.

HAROLD G. TAYLOR
SEABOARD, N.C. -- Harold George Taylor, 77, died Saturday, January 9, in his home, Rt. 1, Seaboard.
A native of Northampton County, he was the son of Troy and Ruby S. Taylor and was preceded in death by a son, Lt. Commander Walter Cleveland Taylor of the US Navy.
Mr. Taylor was a retired farmer, a former First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps serving in World War II as an Operations officer, a deacon at Galatia Baptist Church, a member of Seaboard Lodge No. 456 of the Woodman of the World, and he held several Agriculture related positions in Northhampton County.
Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Janet White Taylor of their home; two daughters, Nancy T. Pope of Wilson and Jan T. Samuel of Beaufort, S.C.; a son, Daniel H. Taylor of Seaboard; three brothers, Dalton Taylor of Mountville, S.C, Marion Taylor of Newport New, Va., and Travis Taylor of Pendleton; a special sister, Faye G. Glover of Seaboard; and six grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday 2 p.m. in Galatia Baptist Church by the Revs. David Foster, Lonnie Armstrong and James Scarborough. Burial will follow in the Seaboard Cemetery.
Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway is in charge of arrangements where a visitation will be held Monday, 7-8:30 p.m.
In Lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that donations be made to Roanoke Chowan Hospice, 521 W. Myers St., Ahoskie, N.C. 27910.

HOMER R. WADFORD SR
ASHEVILLE -- Homer Richard Wadford, Sr., 68, of 566 Old County Home Road went to be with the Lord January 9, 1999.
Mr. Wadford was born August 25, 1930. He was the son of William and Oma Wadford. He was a resident of Wake County until 1977, and then moved to Asheville. He was a graduate of Millbrook High School in Raleigh and Edwards military Institute in Salemburg. Mr. Wadford was a founder of Neuse Tile Service, Inc. where he served as president for many years. He was a charter member of Neuse Baptist Church and served in many capacities under the ministry of H. W. Carey until moving to Asheville. In Asheville he was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Mr. Wadford started the gospel singing group "The Singing Americans" and traveled with them for several years helping spread the gospel. He also was the founder and president of Tile It, Inc., in Asheville until his retirement in 1997.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Sue Wadford of the home; three children, Ricky Wadford of Louisburg, Cindy Wadford Hall of Wake Forest and Kim Wadford Hipp of Asheville; brother, David L. Wadford of Wake Forest; six grandchildren, Chris Wadford, Tina Sykora, Summer Timberlake, Chase and Seth Hall, and Shawn Hipp; two great-grandchildren, Megan and Dillon; five nephews and two nieces.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Baptist Church in Asheville with the Rev. Ralph Sexton, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church "Mission Fund," 216 Shelburn Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.

CHRISSIE GOINS WHITE
WHITEVILLE -- Mrs. Chrissie White, 83, of Smyrna community, died at home on January 10, 1999 after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. White, born in Columbus County on February 19, 1915, lived in the Smyrna Community, just West of Whiteville.
The daughter of Alex Goins and Mattie Smith Goins, she attended Smyrna Community School and graduated in 1934 from Whiteville high School.
Her husbands preceded her in death. George Wesley Hooks, Owen Donald Prease,and Harry Delmas White.
A member of Smyrna Baptist Church since 1927, for some years she served as the church historian and, for several decades served as head of the floral committee, providing flowers for the alter each Sunday. Often these were from her own garden in Smyrna. In addition, Mrs. White was an active member of the Smyrna Women's Missionary Society and for years served as an officer of the organization.
Survivors include: children, James Alex Hooks of Lumberton, Dr. Georgia Grey Hooks Shurr of Fearrington Village, North Carolina, Donnis Prease Krueck of Charlotte, North Carolina, Alexis Jane Prease, J.D. Esq., of Whiteville and Lighthouse Point, Florida; grandchildren, James Wesley Hooks Jr. of Lumberton, Lindsay Caroline Hooks of Lumberton; daughter-in-law, Susan Hooks of Lumberton; sons-in-law, William Howard Shurr, Jeffrey Brinson Krueck, and Allen Wilson Cox Jr. of Clarkton and Lighthouse Point of Florida; sisters and a brother, Eileen Gore of Whiteville, Iris Powers Stephens of Elizabethtown, Maxine Jordan of Clarkton, A.G. Goins of Whiteville.
Memorial service will be Tuesday, January 12, 1999 at 2 p.m. at the Smyrna Baptist Church, with Reverend Oscar Holland and Reverend Merle Johnson officiating, with burial following in the Smyrna Church Cemetery.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Society or to the Chrissie White Floral Fund of Smyrna Baptist Church.
Visitation will be Monday night January 11, 1999 at McKenzie Mortuary from 6-8:30 p.m.
