ALFERD "AL' B. GOODRICH
GOLDSBORO - Alferd Benjamin Goodrich, 76, died Wednesday at the Brian Center.
A native of Oconto, Nebraska, he was raised in West Point, Virginia. Mr. Goodrich was the son of the late Charles Edgar and Edna Graves Goodrich. He was a member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church.
Mr. Goodrich was a United States Marine Corp veteran of World War II. He became a member of the Professional Golfers Association in 1951. He began his professional career at Tides Inn, Virginia, then moved to the Beechwood Country Club in Ahoskie, NC. Mr. Goodrich came to Goldsboro Golf Club in 1954. During his career at the Goldsboro Country Club, he was selected PGA Professional of the Year in 1966. In 1975, he was elected President of the Carolinas PGA. He served three consecutive terms from 1975-1977. He was inducted into the Carolinas PGA Hall of Fame in 1993.
At the request of Mr. Goodrich, a private memorial service will be held.
He is survived by his grandsons, Alferd Benjamin Goodrich, II and Chad Hall Goodrich, Jr.; daughters-in-law, Sharon Wells Goodrich and Susan Goodrich Moss; and a sister, Jean Goodrich Morris. He is also survived by other family members who reside in Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Hall Goodrich and sons, Alferd Benjamin Goodrich, Jr. and Chad Hall Goodrich.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chad Hall Goodrich Memorial Fund, 132 Meadowlark Road, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
The family will receive friends at the Goodrich home, 703 S. Claiborne Street.

REV. BLAINE H. GROSE
STATESVILLE - Rev. Blaine H. Grose, age 76, of 403 Jane Sowers Road, Statesville, died Thursday at his residence.
Rev. Grose was born in Iredell County, May 13, 1922, ason of the late Benjamin Harrison and Lena Padgett Grose. A graduate of Troutman High School, he received his B.A. degree at the Theological Seminary, Louisiana College in New Orleans. He attended Penn State and UNC at Chapel Hill while in the military.He served in the Navy in W.W.II where he received the purple heart for wounds he received at Anzio Beachhead. He served churches in Louisana, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Mississippi and on the North Carolina and South Carolina Executive Board of the Baptist State Convention.
He was preceded in death by a brother, W. Ralph Grose, a sister, Atrie Mae Grose, and his first wife, Beatrice Maddox Grose, who died May 13, 1975.
Survivors: second wife, Bobbie Keller Martin Grose; two sons, David Harrison Grose of Shelby and Philip B. Grose of Statesville; daughter, Donna Grose Jolly of Raleigh; stepson, Steven Frank Martin of Winston-Salem; brother, Dale T. Grose of Riverdale, GA; two sisters, Ruby G. Barker and Doris G. Fink both of Statesville; grandchildren, Michelle Leigh Grose and Michael Harrison Grose both of Shelby; step-grandchildren, Carla Gwyn Martin, Ashlei Renee Martin, and Laura Elaine Martin, all of Winston-Salem.
Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Fairview Baptist Church, 349 Turnersburg Highway, Statesville with the Rev. Scott Eanes and Rev. Wendell Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Iredell Memorial Park. The body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service.
The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall at Fairview Baptist Church 7-8:30 p.m. Friday.

MOLLIE B. HOLLOWELL
EDENTON - Mollie Bunch Hollowell, 102, of Britthaven Nursing Home, and formerly of Rocky Hock Road, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999. Preceded in death by her husband, John W. Hollowell, she is survived by a half brother, Luther A. Bunch of Edenton and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Beaver Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Ron Cava.
Friends may join the family at the home of her nieces, Betsy Jones, 106 Donna Dr., Edenton.
Memorial contributions may be made to Rocky Hock Baptist Church.
Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge of arrangements.

LLOYD JEFFRIES
RALEIGH - Lloyd Hoover Jeffries, 69, of 713 Belmont Dr., died Tuesday at Wake Medical Center. Funeral service will be at 2 p,.m. Sunday at the Bazzell Creek Missionary Baptist Church, 1228 Wilbon Rd., Fuquay-Varina with Rev. Norman T. Davis officiating. Burial, Bazzell Creek Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Williams Jeffries; daughters, Jacqueline Evans of the home, Joycelyn Allison of Raleigh, (Renard), Donna Denning of Raleigh, (Billy), Laverne Jeffries-Dunn of Raleigh (Wilbert); sons, Lloyd Jeffries Jr. of Rock Hill, SC, John Jeffries of Monmouth, NJ, (Patricia); mother, Mary Ruth Jeffries of Raleigh; sisters, Vedie Jeffries of Raleigh, Jean Woods of Garner; brother, Rev. Archie Brown of Raleigh; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

MARGARET P. KELLER
RALEIGH - Margaret Hughes Porter Keller, age 90, a patient at Mayview Convalescent Center, died Thursday following an extended illness.
Mrs. Keller was a native of Raleigh. She received her education at St. Mary's in Raleigh and Salem Academy in Winston-Salem. She made her debut in Raleigh in 1927. Upon marrying, she lived in Charlotte for a period of 40 years during which time she was employed as a receptionist at Mercy Hospital. She returned to Raleigh in 1971. Mrs. Keller was a member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church and a sustaining member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
She is survived by her son William Vernon Porter, Jr., a professor at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois; a brother, William H. Hughes III, of Springmoor Retirement Community, Raleigh; sister Mrs. Katharine Hughes Harriss of Rex Convalescent Care Center, Raleigh; two nieces, Elizabeth Latham Harriss and Susanne Peterson Stephenson of Raleigh; nephew, Martin R. Peterson, Jr. of Cedarburg, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Miss Heleah Porter of Charlotte; and additional great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Edenton Street United Methodist Church 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
Funeral arrangements are being made through Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on St. Mary's Street.

WILLARD I. LEONARD
LILLINGTON - Mr. Williard I. Leonard, 92, a native of Nash County, died Thursday, Jan 7, 1999 in Good Hope Hospital in Erwin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Gladys Womble Leonard. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday, Lillington Baptist Church. The Rev. Mark Morris officiating. Burial, Harnett Memorial Park.Visitation 1-2 p.m. Saturday at Lillington Baptist Church; other times at the home of Robert Womble.
Surviving: one sister, Venie Turner of Enfield.

VIRGINIA C. OUTLAW
MOUNT OLIVE - Virginia Cottle Outlaw, 85, died Thursday. Funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday, Tyndall Funeral Chapel. Rev. Joe Forbes officiating. Burial, Wayne Memorial Park. She was a native of Teachey in Duplin County and was the daughter of the late James Johnson and Ella Mae Teachey Cottle, and was the widow of Theo V. "Joe' Outlaw and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mount Olive.
Surviving: son, Joe Carroll Outlaw of Mount Olive; daughter and son-in-law, Betty Ann O. and Louis G.Clarke of Hopewell, VA; brothers, William Cottle of Waterville, Maine, and Norman Cottle of Knoxville, Tenn.
Visitation at funeral home one hour prior to the service.
A Tyndall Service.

JANE C. SEAGROVES
RALEIGH - Funeral services for Jane Collins Seagroves of Raleigh who died Saturday will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street.
The family will receive friends 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, prior to the service. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.

NANCY ROTHROCK SINK
SALEMTOWNE - Mrs. Nancy Rothrock Sink, 76, died Thursday, January 7, 1999 at Salemtowne. She was born June 30, 1922 in Forsyth County to Mitchell and Pena Hine Rothrock. Mrs. Sink was a lifetime member of Friedland Moravian Church and was a charter member of the Winston-Salem Quilt Guild. She was preceded in death by a sister, Berta Mae Shaw.
Surviving are her husband, G. Ricks Sink of Salemtowne; one daughter, Gay Sharon Brothers and husband Walter of Cary, NC; two sons, Danny Sink and wife Mamie of Chester, VA and Terry Sink and wife Berry of Clemmons; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister Betty Hayorth of Kernersville; two brothers, Robert Rothrock of Kernersville and James Rothrock of Winston-Salem.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Friedland Moravian Church with Dr. Steve Craver and Rev. Norwood Green officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard.
The family will receive friends following the service.
Memorials may be made to Friedland Moravian Church, 2750 Friedland Church Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27107.

TELFAIR L. "TARPIN SMITH
ANGIER - Telfair L. "Tarpin" Smith, 86, of Willow Spring, died Jan. 6, 1999 at a Raleigh Hospital. Funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday, Fellowship Baptist Church, Willow Spring Rev. J. Waggoner and Rev. Jim Aycock officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Inez Young Smith; daughters, Faye Jones and husband, Allen of New Hill, Mary Tart and husband, Morris of Fuquay-Varina, Sue Higgins and husband, Danny of Angier; sons, Thomas J. Smith Sr. of Raleigh, Leonard T. Smith of Garner; sister, Lula Moore of Kittrell; brother, Garland Smith of Florida; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby Lee and Raeford.
Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday, Overby-Johnson Funeral Home, Angier.

ANN C. THOMPSON
MEBANE - Mrs. Elizabeth "Ann" Chappell Thompson, 56, of 2120 Saddle Club Road, died Tuesday, January 5, 1999 at her residence.@obitt ext:She was the wife of Mr. Matt Lee Thompson Jr. of the home and was born October 29, 1942 in Wake County. She was an employee of the N.C. State Credit Union in Carrboro and was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Truby Johnson Chappell and Mrs. O'Vivian Baker Chappell. She was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral service 3 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 1999 at Lebanon United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Jim Greenlee will officiate.
Surviving: husband, Mr. Matt Lee Thompson Jr. of the home; daughters, Mrs. Lori Newton Blalock of Efland, Ms. Tracy Ann Newton of Mebane; one son, Mr. Timothy Paul Dean of Efland; two grandchildren, Samantha Brittany Blalock and William Kendall Dean, both of Efland.The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane, from 7-9 p.m. Friday; other times at the home.

MITTIE JEAN PARKER WALL
KNIGHTDALE - Mittie Jean Parker Wall, 61, of 208 Split Farm Trail, died Thursday, January 7, 1999 at Rex Hospital. Mrs. Wall worked for over 20 years as an assembler of space shuttle parts with AVX Corning Glass. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday, January 10, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel. Burial, New Knightdale Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving: daughter, Wanda W. Smith of Knightdale; son, Tony L. Wall of Knightdale; stepdaughter, Billie Jo Thornburg of Fuquay-Varina; stepson, Bobby Gene Wall of Rocky Mount; sisters, Mavis P. Wall of Raleigh, Romie P. Hall of Benson, Rosaline P. Stewart of Four Oaks; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren.
Mrs. Wall was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Wall Jr. on February 10, 1998.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service & Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545.

EDWARD CLAUDE WOODALL JR.
ZEBULON - Edward Claude Woodall, Jr., 48, of 4005 Quarry Road, died Thursday, January 7, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. Graveside service 2 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 1999 at Watkins family cemetery off Louisbury Road, Wake Forest.
Surviving: son, Edward Claude "Eddie" Woodall, III of Jacksonville; stepdaughter, Shannon Irelan of Wendell; sister, Janice Woodall Robertson of Zebulon; grandchildren, Courtney Creech, Cheyanne Irelan, Colton Irelan, Chase Irelan,; niece, Robin Davis; nephew, David W. McDonald; great-nephews, Cameron Davis and Bryant McDonald.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, January 8, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service & Crematory, in the Visitation Parlor of the Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home of Janice and Bob Robertson, 4005 Quarry Road, Zebulon, NC 27597.

ELISE LOWERY ADAMS
FUQUAY-VARINA - Elise Lowery Adams, 85, of 4124 Hilltop-Needmore Road in Fuquay-Varina, died Monday, April 19, 1999. Funeral, 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Sugg Funeral Chapel. Burial inMontlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
Mrs. Adams (Granny) was born June 11, 1913; the daughter of the late Clarence and Minnie Lowery. She retired from Cornell-Dublier in 1979. She was preceded in death, by her husband, Zeb Adams; sister, Elvira Norris and brother, Aaron Lowery.
Surviving: son, Dr. Larry Adams and wife, Malinda of New Bern; daughters, Annie Lou Weaver and husband, Waylon of Fuquay-Varina; Pat Montague and husband Frank of Raleigh; brother, Linwood Lowery of Mechanicsville, VA; sisters, Ruby Moore and Pansy Harrison both of Raleigh, Lucille Holloman of Hope Mills; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. today at Sugg Funeral Home.

DR. N.F.J. (SY) MATTHEWS
RALEIGH - Dr. N.F.J. (Sy) Matthews, Emeritus Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina State University, died after a long illness on Sunday, April 18, 1999. A visitation for family and friends will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, on Wednesday, April 21, from 7-8:30 p.m. The funeral is at Brown-Wynne on Thursday, April 22, at 2 p.m., followed by burial at Montlawn Cemetery. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that contributions be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC 27605.
Dr. Matthews was born on August 9, 1931, in Clinton, NC. He was the youngest of the three sons of Anna Matilda Jones Matthews and William E. Matthews. He received his doctorate from Princeton University in 1964 and accepted appointment in the Department of Electrical Engineering at North Carolina State University in that same year. Sy retired in May, 1998, after 34 years of outstanding service to the department and the university. He is survived by his wife, Betty, his daughter Betty Ann Beckham of Louisburg, NC, his sons James P. and Robert P. Matthews, and his brother Carroll H. Matthews, all of Raleigh, NC.
Throughout his long career at NCSU, Sy was a dedicated and distinguished teacher. He received Outstanding Teacher Awards in 1967, 1975, and 1988 and the NCSU Distinguished Achievement Award in 1992. He was a member of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers and was named Alumni Distinguished Professor for the years 1992-1994. He was also an outstanding colleague and member of the university community. He regularly assisted not only young faculty members seeking to further their careers, but also older faculty members and administrators who often sought his sage advice. He served on numerous committees and was instrumental in structuring one of the best undergraduate programs in the nation. He also served as Director of Graduate Programs for the department in 1984-85. Sy devoted the last thirty years of his research to developing a unified field theory that joined accepted theories of electromagnetism and gravitation, culminating in 1999 with publication of his monograph "Unification of Electromagnetism, Kinematics, and Gravitation" which presents a set of equations that achieve the unification he (and others) for so long sought to establish.
Sy Matthews was a dedicated and devoted husband, father, brother, and friend. He was one of the finest people who ever lived and will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
