WILLIAM "BILL" FLIPPIN JR.
HILLSBOROUGH - William Randall "Bill" Flippin Jr. died Monday, May 3, 1999. A native of Tallulah, LA. Mr. Flippin spent most of his life in Memphis, TN moving to Hillsborough in 1972.
Preceded in death by his wife, Jeane Flippin. He is survived by sons, William R. "Buddy" Flippin III of Morehead City, NC, Randall L. Flippin of Dallas, TX; daughters, Lou Turner of Raleigh, NC, Angela Loftin of Efland, NC, Sydney Cole of Hurdle Mills, NC; brother, Tommy Flippin of Palatka, FL; sisters, Barbara Graves of Memphis, TN, Patricia Smithwick of Lubbock, TX and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to your local chapter of the American Heart Association.
Arrangements are with Walker's Funeral Home, Hillsborough.

MARVIN B. GORDON
CLAYTON - Beatrice Johnson Gordon, 72, of 1479 Gordon Rd., died Tuesday, 5/4. Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at McLaurin Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens. Rev. Keith Walters officiating.
She is survived by: husband, Marvin B. Gordon of the home; daughter, Jackie Gordon of Durham; son, Ben Gordon of Prairie Grove, AR; sisters, Lorraine Moore of Bennettsville, SC, Verlie Chamblee of Durham and Barbara Ann Bagley of Columbia, SC; brother, J.E. Johnson of Four Oaks; grandson, Trey Gordon of Clayton; great-grandchildren, Trevor Gordon Gordon of Clayton.
While flowers are appreciated, memorial contributions may be made to Bethesda Baptist Church, 4967 US 70 Bus Hwy W., Clayton, NC 27520.
Family will receive friends, 7-8:30 Wednesday at the funeral home.

ELIZABETH (BETTY) J. HUGHES
CARY - Elizabeth (Betty) J. Hughes, 71, of Cary, died May 3, 1999 at Sarasota, FL.
Funeral service Friday, May 7, 1999 at The Francioni Taylor & Lopez Funeral Home, 704 7th Avenue, Asbury Park, New Jersey at 10 a.m. Interment, Hamilton Cemetery, Neptune, New Jersey.
She was born in Asbury Park and lived in Ocean Twp. before moving to Sarasota in 1990. She was a homemaker and a life member of First Baptist Church of Asbury Park, NJ. She lived six months in Sarasota, six months with daughter in Cary, North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her husband Horace W. Hughes who died in 1993 and brother F. Wayne Ward who died in 1982.
Surviving are one daughter, Gloria J. Gula of Cary and son-in-law Don; a brother Jack Ward of Ocean Twp., NJ; two grandchildren Jeffrey W. and Matthew B. Gula of Cary, NC; nephew Gary W. Ward of Hawaii and niece Doreen A. Fairbank of Cary.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

GAYLE THOMAS KILLEN
KNIGHTDALE - Gayle Thomas Killen, 56, of 314 S. Smithfield Road, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at his home after a lengthy illness. Mr. Killen was a retired computer programmer with IBM.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel. Burial, New Knightdale Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Linda Bogue Killen; son, Russell Benjamin Killen and his wife, Kipley of Raleigh; daughter, Karen K. Banks and her husband, Tracy of Knightdale; grandchildren, Ryan Benjamin Killen, Lauren Marie Banks; mother, Velma Waters of Camden, SC; step-mother, Vera Killen of Milan, Tennessee; sister, Lynn K. Kirk of Milan, Tennessee; brother, Harold Killen of Waverly, Tennessee.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home, 314 S. Smithfield Road, Knightdale, NC 27545.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society, Eastern NC Chapter, 3101 Industrial Drive, Suite 210, Raleigh, NC 27609.

VIRGINIA EASON MATHIS
ROCKY MOUNT - Virginia Eason Mathis, 85, died Sunday, May 2, 1999. She was born March 27, 1914, in Edgecombe County, daughter of the late Levi Duncan and Mollie Galloway Eason. Mrs. Mathis was preceded in death by her husband, Walker Mathis; sisters, Ruby Eason Stone, Sarah Eason LeFrage; brothers, Harvey Eason and Robert Allen "Flap" Eason. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Surviving: niece, Margaret Moore Eason Venable of Winston-Salem; several special cousins.
Graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pineview Cemetery, Section 36, with the Rev. Caswell Shaw officiating. The family will receive friends at the home 708 Parham Street.

WILLIAM G. MOODY
GARNER - William Gene Moody, 66, of 307 King Arthur Trail, died Tuesday, 5/4.
Services will be held 8 p.m. Wednesday following visitation at McLaurin Funeral Home Chapel and also graveside 11 a.m. Thursday in Marsh Swamp Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Ray Wells and Rev. Al Warrick officiating.
He is survived by: wife, Glenda J. Moody of the home; sons, John Moody of Raleigh, Sam Moody of Garner; daughter, Connie Hamilton of Garner; sisters, Ellen "Teenie" Core of Garner, Linda S. Barlow of Wake Forest, Audrey S. Dundee of Wake Forest; brothers, Charles W. Short of Bahama, Joe Short of Siler City; aunts, Bessie Strickland of Raleigh, Ruth Davis of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Jason Hamilton, Kyle Hamilton.
Family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

J. RUPERT PARRISH
BENSON - Mr. Joseph Rupert Parrish, age 77, of 1469 Johnston County Road died Tuesday at Good Hope Hospital in Erwin. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, Benson. Officiating will be Rev. Warren Bock. Burial will follow in Devotional Gardens, Dunn, with Masonic Rites.
Mr. Parrish was born December 7, 1921, in Harnett County to the late Eddie Lester and Ethel Langdon Parrish. He was a farmer and a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. Mr. Parrish served in World War II with the U.S. Army, was a member of American Legion Banner Post 109, a member of the 40 & 8, and served in many other capacities. He was a member of the Angier Masonic Lodge 686, was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rites, and was an Amran Shriner. Mr. Parrish served on the Harnett County Board of Directors for Farm Bureau for over twenty-five years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Agnes Denning Parrish and sisters, Thelma Mason and Audrey Burtchette.
Surviving include wife, Christine Stewart Akerman Parrish; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Sue Parrish, of Angier, Keith and Martha Parrish of Benson, Dwight and Janice Parrish, of Angier and; step-son, Stewart Akerman of Seattle, WA; sisters, Rebeth Mitchell and Joyce Carter, both of Angier, and Marva Whittington of Garner; twin brother, Raeford Parrish of Angier; grandchildren, Mandy Parrish, Kristy Parrish, Kevin Parrish, Jason Parrish and Todd Parrish.
Family will be at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.
Family suggests memorials be made to Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, c/o Juanita Hudson, 2981 Ebenezer Church Road, Benson, NC 27504.

ANN CURRIN RAMBEAUT
WILLOW SPRING - Ann Currin Rambeaut, 61, died Monday. Funeral 2 p.m. Thursday, Sugg Funeral Funeral chapel in Fuquay-Varina. Burial, Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: husband, Elbert Rambeaut; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Steve Allen of Willow Spring; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Stacy Rambeaut of Willow Spring; grandchildren, Stephanie Allen and Neil Allen; brothers, Marshall Currin of Raleigh, Willard Currin of Apex, Simpson Currin of Fuquay-Varina, Edward Currin of Angier, Richard Currin of Willow Spring; sisters, Frances Palmiter and Carolyn Morris, both of Apex; several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Rambeaut was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mary B. Currin and brother, J.B. Currin.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Sugg Funeral Home; other times at the family home, 8329 Kennebec Road.

IRMA T. SHACKELFORD
KINSTON - Irma Taylor Shackelford, 94, died at her home on Tuesday, May 4, 1999, following a period of declining health. She was the widow of John Arthur Shackelford and daughter of the late Ossie and Helen Taylor, all of the Airy Grove Community of Lenoir County. She was a mother and homemaker. At the time of her death, she was the oldest member of Airy Grove Christian Church, which was founded by her ancestors in 1896. A graduate of Hookerton High School, she attended East Carolina Teachers College. She was very active in her church, the Lenoir County home demonstration clubs, and the North Carolina Farm Bureau Women on local and state levels.
Surviving are two sons, Ossie T. Shackelford and A. Hope Shackelford and his wife Margot, all of Kinston; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Howard-Carter and Stroud Funeral Home with the Rev. Annell George McLawhorn officiating. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family will also be at the home of Ossie T. Shackelford, 1100 Country Club Drive, from 1-6 p.m. today and following the services on Thursday.
Memorials may be made to Airy Grove Christian Church, c/o W. Ralph Taylor, Jr., 1046 Taylor Heath Road, Kinston, NC 28501, or to the charity of one's choice.

CHARLES B. SHIVELEY
ROCKY MOUNT - Charles Barton Shiveley, 71, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999. He was born February 5, 1928, in Nemaha County, NE, son of the late Charley and Esther Woods Shiveley. Mr. Shiveley was Principal of Enfield Academy from 1974 until 1984, and Retired Army LTC, where he served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. While in service Mr. Shiveley received numerous awards and commendations including the Legion of Merit for Vietnam and the Army Commendation Medal.
Surviving: wife, Mary Shiveley of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Steve Hewett of Wilson, Gloria Shiveley and Neil Bleau of Morrisville; grandchild, Chris Hewett of Wilson; sister, Amy Gunn of Staunton, IL.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Rocky Mount Memorial Park in the Mausoleum with Full military Rights. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson Funeral Home, Sunset Avenue. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, Disaster Relief Fund, 516 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 8281, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.

EMILY L. STEPHENSON
ROCKY MOUNT - Emily Long Stephenson, 55, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at Nash General Hospital. She was born April 5, 1944 in Franklin County, the daughter of the late George Duke Long and Meta Griffin Long of Franklin County. Mrs. Stephenson was a member of Englewood Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband James Donnie Stephenson.
Besides her mother she is survived by her son, James Lawrence Stephenson of Rocky Mount; one daughter, Kathryn Ann Stephenson of Rocky Mount; one brother, George Long of Raleigh; one sister, Frances Murray of Louisburg, NC.
Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 6, 1999 at Englewood Presbyterian Church with Rev. Drew Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Bowling Funeral Home, 661 English Road, Rocky Mount, NC.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Englewood Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 100 S. Englewood Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.

HERBERTA S. UZZLE
WILSON'S MILLS - Herberta Stuckey Uzzle, age 88, of 398 Main St. in Wilson's Mills died Monday evening. She was born to Olive Tucker and Herbert Stuckey on May 16, 1910, in LaGrange, Georgia, and was married to the late James Thomas Uzzle of Wilson's Mills on September 4, 1934. Mrs. Uzzle graduated from Charles L. Coon High School in Wilson in 1927 and received an AB Degree from Atlantic Christian College in 1931 and a Library Science Degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1969. She taught school at Rock Ridge from 1931 to 1934, Jamesville from 1934 to 1935, Smithfield Elementary in 1947, and Wilson's Mills High School from 1948 to 1969. From 1969 until her retirement in 1972 she was the librarian at Smithfield Elementary School.
Mrs. Uzzle was very active in her church as well as in the community. She was a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a Sunday School teacher for 55 years, a choir member, organized the youth group, Director of Vacation Bible School for many years, C.W.F. president for two terms, Chairperson of numerous church projects, church secretary, church clerk, Outreach Chairperson, World Studies Mission Chairperson, Mill Creek District C.W.F. President, member of C.W.F. State Board for two terms, International Quadrennial Hostess. In the community she was a member of the Extension Homemaker's Club for forty years. Family Life Leader, Educational Leader, Health Leader, Chairperson of "Keeping Johnston County Beautiful" Project, Trustee since 1980. Mrs. Uzzle served as Johnston County NCEA President, PTA Program Chairman, and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She was also Smithfield Women's Club President, Chaplain, Chairperson of Home Life Department, and Secretary, as well as Education Chairperson, Chaplain for two terms, President for two terms, and frequent program speaker for the United Daughters of Confederacy. In 1964, Mrs. Uzzle was named the Wilson's Mills Homemaker's Woman of the Year as well as Woman of the Month of Atlantic Christian College. She was a member of Alpha Beta Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma since her initiation in 1957. She served as first Vice-President from 1967 to 1970 and President from 1970 to 1972. She also served on the Finance, Research, Membership, Publicity, Program, and Legislative Committees.
Surviving are: three daughters, Dr. Elizabeth Mitchiner Uzzle Meldau (Besty) of Raleigh, Virginia Louise Uzzle Kitzmiller (Jenny Lou) of Chapel Hill, Ola Tucker Uzzle Twisdale of Smithfield; a son, James Thomas Uzzle, Jr. of Four Oaks; a sister, Louise Stuckey Smith of St. Petersberg, FL; seven grandchildren, David Kitzmiller, Kim Fehr, Beth Kutsch, Jay Twisdale, J.T. Uzzle, III, Jeff Twisdale, Paul Uzzle, dedicated companion, Shirley Cockrell. Mrs Uzzle was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Rives, and a brother, Herbert Tucker Stuckey.
A graveside service will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the Wilson's Mills Christian Church Cemetery with Rev. Deborah Butt officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Uzzle residence in Wilson's Mills anytime on Wednesday Parrish Funeral Home in Selma is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilson's Mills Christian Church to establish a fund for purchasing an organ, P.O. Box 247, Wilson's Mills, NC 27583.

BEN WIMBERLY
MONCURE - Ben Wimberly, of Moncure, died Monday, May 3, 1999 at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill. He was born June 8, 1925; in Chatham County to the late Charlie and Maude Wimberly.
Mr. Wimberly was a life-long resident of Moncure. He retired from Lee Moore Oil Company of Sanford in 1987. Ben served 12 years in the US Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict and received an Honorable Discharge with a rank of 1st Sergeant. He was a founder and charter member of the Moncure Volunteer Fire Department and also served as an active firefighter. He was community minded and served on the Chatham County Board of Commissioners for 16 years. Volunteered on the Chatham Board of Directors for two years and was an active member of the Haywood Independent Bible Church and choir.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Sarah Faye of the home and his four children. His sons, Randy and Danny of Moncure, daughters, Theresa W. Parker of Moncure, and Lu Ann W. Turlington of Lillington; 10 grandchildren; and many friends. Also survived by one brother, Jack of Effingham, SC; three sisters, Hazel W. Brown of Pittsboro, Mildred W. Simmons of Olivia, Delana W. Wicker of Greensboro.
He was predeceased by his older brother, Charles G. Wimberly of Aberdeen, and a younger sister, Peggy W. Pearce of Charlotte.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, 1999 at Haywood Independent Bible Church. The Reverends Lloyd Black and James Bowden will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery following the service.

WADE C. WOODALL
CLAYTON - Wade Canious Woodall, 70, of F-5 Clayton Manor Apts., died Tuesday, 5/4. Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at McLaurin Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Stony Chance officiating.
He is survived by: wife, Elizabeth H. Woodall of the home; sons, Kenneth Woodall of Clayton, Jerry Woodall of Cottageville, WV, Ricky Woodall of Raleigh; daughter, Becky Woodall of Raleigh. Surviving in addition to his wife and children are: three sisters; two brothers; four grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

REV. JOHNNIE H. BOWEN
ROCKY MOUNT - Rev. Johnnie H. Bowen passed away at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC, Sunday, May 30, 1999. He went to be with the Lord. He was born in Martin County, son of the late William Earl and Maggie Cherry Bowen. Rev. Bowen was the founder and organizer of the Full Gospel Praise and Worship Church that he started, June of 1966 at 562 Nashville Road, Rocky Mount, NC, and has been the Pastor of the church for 33 years. Rev. Bowen was a volunteer chaplain at Nash General Hosptial for 17 years and also served three years as volunteer chaplain at Community Hospital. He served as chairman of the International Gospel Assembly, the organizer and president of "We Care" club, and was a volunteer for transporting handicapped senior citizens to their destinations. Rev. Bowen was the host of the TV Program "Full Gospel Praise and Worship Hour on Channel WRMY for three years. For the last two years, he was host of the Sam program on WHIG.TV.
Surviving: wife, Pattie (Pat) Parker Bowen of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Ann and Paul Buhrke of Ravena, NY; son and daughter-in-law, Don Wade and Karen Bowen of Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Bridgett Nicole Bowen, Daniel Buhrke, Lauren Buhrke and Matthew Buhrke; sister, Daisy Odom of Rocky Mount.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Full Gospel Praise and Worship Church with Rev. Tommy Hagan and Rev. Harold Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends, 7-8:30 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home, Sunset Ave and other times at 700 Kinchen Dr.
