Gregory C. Edmister

Gregory Clyde Edmister of Rocky Mount died Jan. 9, 2006 from complications of a brain tumor. He was 58.

A native of Kinston, he grew up in Chapel Hill. After graduating from Chapel Hill High School, he received a bachelor's degree from UNC. He worked for Carolina Telephone, now Sprint, for 36 years.

A celebration of his life was held Jan. 14 at Maggiano's at the Streets at Southpoint Mall.

Survivors include four children, Zachary K. Edmister, Matthew G. Edmister, Sarah E. Edmister and Stephen G. Edmister; his fiancee, Patricia L. Andrews of Raleigh; and a brother, Russell S. Edmister, of Cary.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gregory C. Edmister Memorial Fund at the UNC Business School, c/o UNC Development Office, 208 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC, 27514.

David R. Hackney

David Ray Hackney of Pittsboro died Jan. 11, 2006 at his home. He was 61.

A Chatham County native, he served in the National Guard for a number of years and was retired from AT&T. He worked at Pittsboro Appliance Sales.

Services will be private.

Survivors include a daughter, Tracee H. Whitaker of Pittsboro; mother, Ernestine C. Hackney of Pittsboro; a brother, Archie Hackney of Pittsboro; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Griffin Funeral Service and Cremation in Pittsboro.

Kathleen Hiskey

Kathleen Hiskey of Chapel Hill and Wilmington died Jan. 7, 2006 at Duke University Medical Center. She was 50.

Born in Nassau County, N.Y., she was raised in Chapel Hill from the age of 3 and graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 1973. She received a bachelor's degree from UNC in 1978. She attended the Boston Museum School of Art in 1978. Prior to her relocation to Wilmington, she was employed at The Chapel Hill News as a graphic artist.

A celebration of her life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Jan. 21 at the home of her parents in Chapel Hill.

Survivors include her parents, Dick and Joan Hiskey of Chapel Hill; sister, Liz Stewart of Durham; and brothers Tim Hiskey of Princeton, N.J., Chuck Hiskey of Chapel Hill and Jon Hiskey of Nashville, Tenn.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chapel Hill Public Library in memory of Kathleen Hiskey, 100 Library Drive, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514.

Charlotte P. Fisher

Charlotte Parker "Parkie" Fisher died Jan. 9, 2006 from complications of lung cancer. She was 86.

A native of Goffstown, N.H., she attended both Wheaton College in Massachusetts and Westbrook College in Maine. She lived in many places, including her favorites, Lima, Peru, and Manila, The Philippines. After retirement, she lived in New Hampshire in the summers and Florida in the winters until she moved to Carolina Meadows.

Her interests included singing with various groups, birding, traveling, needlework, painting and reading.

A small service was held Jan. 11 at Chapel of the Cross. A Celebration of Life is planned for this summer in West Campton, N.H.

Survivors include her husband, Josiah H.V. Fisher; two sons, Josiah and Charles; a daughter, Shirlie; a sister, Barbara Hadlock; a brother, Henry Parker; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Cathleen W. Hester

Cathleen W. Hester of Carrboro died Jan. 17, 2006 at UNC Hospitals. She was 85.

A native of Clover, S.C., she was retired from the B.V.D. plant in Carrboro.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 20 at Woodlawn cemetery in Durham by the Rev. David Woodhouse.

Survivors include a son, William F. Hester Jr. of Durham; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the South Orange Rescue Squad P.O. Box 128, Carrboro, N.C. 27510-128 or the Diabetes. Foundation.

James Warrenfells

James C. Warrenfells of Durham died Jan. 8, 2006. He was 58.

A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., he was a graduate of McCallie School in Chattanooga and UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a lieutenant in the Navy during the Vietname War and became a helicopter pilot. Following service in the Navy he returned to the Triangle and made a career as a payroll accountant in Chapel Hill.

A funeral was held Jan. 14 at the Chattanooga Funeral Home. Survivors include a brother, Shannon Warrenfells III of Rossville, Ga.

John Forsyth

John Forsyth, formerly of Chapel Hill, died Dec. 31, 2006 in West Virginia. He was 69.

He was professor emeritus in the Duke University Fuqua School of Business.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Jan. 23 in the Fuqua Faculty Hall (formerly the Old Faculty Lounge) on the Duke University campus.

Survivors include his wife, Diane; a son, David Forsyth of Maryland; a daughter, Dayna Reist of New York; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the American Diabetics Foundation or the American Heart Association.

Brendan S. Kelly

Brendan S. Kelly of Pittsboro died Jan. 17, 2006 after a long illness. He was 82.

A native of Dorchester, Mass., he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and participated in the D-Day landings of 1944. He settled in Cohasset, Mass., commuting by ferry to State Street Bank in Boston for many years. He retired from management of the foreign exchange department to Fearrington Village in 1988, where he took up bocce and made frequent trips to the coast.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 31 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Joann, of the home; three step-daughters, Katherine High of Merion, Pa., Rebecca High of Chapel Hill and Lacey Hauser of Phoneix, Ariz.; a brother, Kevin Kelly of Seattle; and six grandchildren.

Frederic Cleaveland

A memorial service for Frederic Cleaveland, ex-UNC leader who died Dec. 21, 2005, will be at 3 p.m. Jan. 28 at Chapel Hill Community Church, 106 Purefoy Road.

W. Robert Mann

W. Robert Mann died Jan. 20, 2006 at Carol Woods Retirement Community. He was 85.

He was born in Honea Path, S.C., and received a doctorate in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley. He was retired from the UNC faculty and received the Tanner Award for Teaching Excellence.

He was a founding member of the Chapel Hill Fellowship for School Integration.

A Funeral Mass was conducted Jan. 24 at St. Thomas More Church. A graveside ceremony will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. in Honea Path, S.C.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Mann Kelly of Arvada, Colo., and Monika Mann of Berkeley, Calif.; a son, Charles Mann of Austin, Texas; a sister, Martha Freeman, and three granddaughters.

Donations may be made to the Catholic Medical Mission Board, 10 W. 17th St., New York, N.Y. 10011.

Jane B. Pickard

Jane "Mickey" Brown Pickard died Jan. 21, 2006 at the Georgetown, Ky., home of her sister after a long illness. She was 59.

A Chapel Hill native, she was the daughter of the late Otway Edward and Jane Elizabeth Brown. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Georgetown, Ky., and had attended Christ United Methodist Church in Southern Village.

A memorial service is planned.

Survivors include two children, Jae Elizabeth "Missy" Pickard and Chris Edward Dubs, both of Burlington; and a sister, Mary Lou White of Georgetown, Ky.

George E. Stetson

George Edward Stetson died Jan. 18, 2006. He was 77.

He was born in Oil City, Pa., and received a bachelor's degree from Yale University. He received a master's degree in history from the University of Delaware and a doctorate in geography from UNC. He served in the U.S. Navy and taught military history at Frederick College in Portsmouth, Va., and was a professor of geography at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pa.

A family service was held Jan. 20 at the Church of the Cross in Chapel Hill. An inurnment is planned at the family mausoleum in Greenville, Pa.

Survivors include three daughters, Katherine Ann Stetson of Efland, Mary Elizabeth Stetson of Santa Fe, N.M., and Alice Stetson O'Bryan of Winnetka, Ill.; a son, George Arthur Stetson of Altadena, Calif.; a sister, Elizabeth Stetson Dowd of Charlotte; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

Harry W. Alston

Harry Weldon Alston of Carrboro died Jan. 24, 2006 in a traffic accident. He was 39.

A native of Chapel Hill, he attended Chapel Hill-Carrboro city schools and graduated from the Laurinburg Institute in 1986. He worked in area restaurants, including many years at the Rathskeller.

Funeral services were held Jan. 28 at Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Durham.

Survivors include his mother, Lillian Alston; a son, Tyquan Omar Alston; four sisters, Helen Marie Williams, Judy Ann Alston, Janet Lee Alston and Celeste Diane Alston; four brothers, Oris Alston, Kenneth Russell Alston, Larry Ivey Alston and Demetrius Ernest Alston; and a special friend, Sharon Smith.

Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home.

Ophelia H. Andrew

Ophelia Hooks "Babe" Andrew of Chapel Hill died Jan. 26, 2006 at Carol Woods Retirement Community in Chapel Hill. She was 82.

Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.

Delores T. Bradshaw

Delores Terrell Bradshaw of Mebane died Jan. 26, 2006 at UNC Hospitals. She was 60.

A native of Orange County, she was employed at A.O. Smith and was a member of Central Baptist Church in Mebane.

A funeral was held Jan. 28 at Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Bradshaw of the home; a daughter, Paula Harris Ray of Chapel Hill; a son, Greg Harris of Burlington; a sister, Marie Bradford of Haw River; two brothers, Curtis Terrell of Florida and Dennis Terrell of Virginia; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Chance J. Edwards

Chance Jaki Edwards died Jan. 22, 2006. He was 23 months old.

At the age of four months he was diagnosed with leukemia. Funeral services were held Jan. 26 at Jones Funeral Home.

Survivors include his parents, Antwan Edwards and Penny M. Clark; a brother, Antwan Edwards Jr.; maternal grandparents Glenn and Rockie Wilhelm; and paternal grandparents, Wilbert and Mary Edwards.
