Mary T. Walling ‘Miss Maggie’

COPE, S.C. — Mary Nadine Thomas Walling, 81, of 283 Neighbors Way, Bolentown community, Cope, S.C., and Maggie Valley, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at her home in Maggie Valley.

A native of Orangeburg County, she was the daughter of the late John Henry Thomas and Blanche Bessinger Thomas. She was educated in the Willow Schools near Cope. She served as “Miss Maggie” for the last six years. Walling welcomed and greeted the visitors as they entered the town. She was a member of Two Mile Swamp Baptist Church near Cope and attended Maggie Baptist Church while in North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Brantly William Walling; and four brothers, Amon, Theof, Herman and Allen Thomas.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Annette Smith of Maggie Valley and Julia Marie Brooks of Cope, S.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Henry and Beverly Walling of Cope and Thomas Wayne and Theresa Walling of Leesville, S.C.; one sister, Margariet S. Duncan of Beaufort; one brother, Henry "Son" Thomas of Santee; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Two Mile Swamp Baptist Church. The Rev. Chuck Wells officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Grandsons Jeffrey and Joey Crider, Gregg, Will and Shelley Walling served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were her great-grandsons.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home in Orangeburg, S.C. The body was at the country home of William and Beverly Walling in Bolentown and at Thompson Funeral Home before the services.

Memorials may be made to Two Mile Swamp Baptist Church-Kitchen Fund, 1066 Bonnette Road, Cope, SC 29038; or to Maggie First Baptist, Soco Road, Maggie Valley, NC 28751.

Juanita C. Leatherwood

Haywood County native

Juanita Cagle Leatherwood, 87, of Waynesville, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Manson and Victoria Yarborough Cagle. She was a homemaker and member of Lake Junaluska Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Wayne Leatherwood; daughter, Joann Tucker; two brothers, Berkley and William Cagle; three sisters, Fannie Burr McClure, Amelia “Pete” White and Willie Boone Parton; and a grandson, Charles Grasty.

Surviving are her daughter, Beatrice Conard of Waynesville; one brother, Doye Cagle of Cruso; three sisters, Mary Dotson of Waynesville and Bobbie Jo Miller and Julie Ann Wood, both of Rio Alto, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at noon Thursday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Revs. David Teague and Carl Chastain will officiate. Burial will be in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Owen Shetley, Howard Leatherwood, Bill Buchanan, Walter Leatherwood, Richie Gaddis, Richard Messer and Wayne Grasty.

The family will receive friends for 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at the funeral home. An online guest registry may be signed at www.legacy.com.

William C. McBride

AT&T retiree, veteran

WALESKA, Ga. — William Carl McBride, 71, of Garland Mountain Trail, Waleska, Ga., died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at the home of his son in Marietta, Ga.

He was the son of the late Robert Carl and Florence McBride of Waynesville. He served in the Army in Korea and attended Western Carolina University. He retired from AT&T in Atlanta.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Donna Jo Queen McBride; three sons, Billy, Steve and David, and a daughter, Lain, all of Georgia; one brother, Robert McBride of Wingate; six sisters, Dorothy McCracken of Salisbury, Louise Chambers, Florence Owen, Katrina Jones, Grace Ensley and Sally Deweese, all of Waynesville; and six grandchildren.

Private services for the family will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, at Arlington Chapel in Atlanta.

Lloyd N. Frady

Haywood County native

Lloyd Nelson “Smiley” Frady, 76, of Waynesville, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Ester Frady. He was employed by Lea Industries in the Finishing Department. He was a member of Dellwood Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Frady; and one sister, Emma Messer.

Surviving are his wife, Bobbie Jo Frady; two sons, Ricky Gaddis of Sylva and Jackie Gaddis of Waynesville; one daughter, Roseanne Medford of Sylva; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Rev. Jerry Nelson will be officiating. Burial will be in the Turner cemetery in Maggie Valley.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Gary R. Newlin

Wal-Mart employee, veteran

Gary Russell Newlin, 60, of 26 Pinedale Road, Waynesville, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, from injuries sustained from an automobile accident.

A native of Wichita, Kan., he was the son of the late Wilmer Russell and Doris Larraine Evans Newlin. He had lived in New York before moving to Haywood County in 1994. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was an employee of Wal-Mart Super Center in Sylva.

Surviving are his wife, Bernice Darnell; and one stepdaughter, Bruin Packard of Waynesville.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Crawford/Ray Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bobbie Holland

Haywood County native

CANTON — Bobbie Holland, 78, of 32 Paul Holland Road, Canton, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at her home.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Walter Scott and Pearl Coman Price. She was a active member of Canton Central United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Bernice Hartsock and Tommie Price; and a brother, Walter Scott Price Jr.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Paul Holland; two daughters, Paula Rhodarmer of Canton and Lawanna Johnson of Raleigh; one son, Skip Holland and his wife, Jan, of Canton; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The Revs. Michael Gehring and Roy Kilby officiated.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Christian Academy, 5900 Pigeon Road, Canton, NC 28716.

Wells Funeral Homes of Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Audrey A. Evans

Pennsylvania native

CANTON — Audrey A. Evans, 73, of Canton, Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at her home.

A native of Scranton, Pa., she graduated from West Side High School in 1947. She volunteered at Hospice in Florida and REACH in Franklin.

Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Ronald Evans; six children; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Unity Center of Arden.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, P.O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813 or the Unity Center of Arden.

Mary Roberson

Champion retiree

CANTON — Mary Swanger Roberson, 94, formerly of Spring Street, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002 in Redmond, Wash.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late William Alonzo and Florence Cogdill Swanger. She retired from Champion International with 37 years of service and was a member of Canton First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Canton Women’s Club and a former member of the Oak Leaf Chapter 81 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are one son and his wife, Joe H. and Billie Roberson of Redmond, Wash.; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. The Rev. Dr. Rick Gosnell officiated. Entombment was held at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family received friends from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Bessie R. Holland

Canton native

MOULTON, Ala. — Bessie Rymer Holland, 94, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002 at N.H.C. in Moulton, Ala.

A native of Canton, she was the daughter of the late William Gaston and Emily Constance Allen Gaston. She worked at Champion Paper Company in Courtland, Ala.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Franklin Holland.

Surviving are a daughter her husband, Connie and F.J. “Pete” Noland of Decatur, Ala.; one brother, William Gaston Rymer Jr. of Canton; one sister, Emily Donnacher of Warbash, Ind.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13 at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The Rev. T.M. Gibson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Roselawn Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley, P.O. Box 2745, Decatur, AL 35602.

Donald Leavenworth

CLYDE — Donald "Don" Leavenworth, 71, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at his home.

A native of Bradford County, Pa., he had resided in Haywood County since 1977. He was the son of the late Albert and Charlotte Newberry Leavenworth. He was the editor of the Canton Enterprise for 10 years. He later retired from the Waynesville bureau of the Asheville Citizen-Times in 1996. He had served as chairman of the museum board in Canton for several years. He was a member of Canton Presbyterian Church and was a Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War.

Surviving are wife of 47 years, Dorothee Wells Leavenworth; one daughter, Janet Arrington of Clyde; and two grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Canton Presbyterian Church. The the Revs. Beverly Brock and Riley Covin will officiate. Burial will follow in Bon-A-Venture cemetery, Old Clyde Road.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Canton Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 784, Canton, NC 28716; or to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.

B. Harrison Hall

CANDLER — B. Harrison Hall, 90, of Bryson Road, Candler, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at a local hospital.

A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late T. B. and Rosa West Hall. He was employed by Greene Motor Sales and retired from AnTon Chevrolet. He was a member of Pole Creek Baptist Church, where he formerly served as a Sunday School Superintendent, choir director and deacon. He was a World War II Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Hoglen Hall, who died in 1994; six brothers, Herbert, Ernest, Kenneth, Jasper, Thurman and Fannon Hall; and four sisters, Polly Hall, Legie Hall, Sally Hall Shafer and Emma Hall Roberson.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pole Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Dennis Thurman and G.W. Jameson will officiate. Burial will follow in Snow Hill United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home of Barbara and Ron Harris, 245 Liberty Road, Candler.

Wells Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Pole Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 96 Snow Hill Church Road, Candler, NC 28715.

Claude Norman

Claude Norman, 86, of 25 Genoa Lane, Waynesville, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Nathan and Mary Watson Norman. He was a truck driver for Allison Oil Co. retiring in 1966. He was a member of Grandview Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and was on the building and grounds committee and served as the church treasurer.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Derry, Homer, Henry, Will and Marion Norman; and five sisters, Nora Jackson, Dora Russell Wyatt, Leila Rhinehart and Mollie and Mattie Warlick.

Surviving are his wife of more than 64 years, Lucille Jones Norman; two sons, Robert Bruce Norman and his wife, Jane, and Michael Douglas Norman and his wife, Dottie, all of Waynesville; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Grandview Baptist Church. The Revs. Dr. Jack Roberts and Ted Reeves officiated. Burial was in Buchanan cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jim and Wallace Rogers, Larry Rathbone, Jerry Pace, Dick Chambers, Marvin Downs, Ted Norman and Leonard Davis. The Reed Sunday School class served as honorary pallbearers.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville.

Memorials may be made to Grandview Baptist Church Building and Grounds Fund, 1562 Allens Creek Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
