John B. Childers

SYLVA — John B. Childers, 82, of Sylva, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004. He was the son of the late Robert and Ivory Buchanan Childers. He was a Army veteran. He retired from Nantahala Power and Light as a line crew foreman. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jeanette Cabe Childers; three sisters, Marie Frizzell, Anna Belle Jones and Luna Brown; and four brothers, Howard Sylvester, Blane and Alvin Childers. Surviving are his wife, Etta Carter Childers; three sons, Johnny, Robert and Ray Childers, all of Sylva; five daughters, Ann Ivalee Taylor and her husband, Harrell, Betty Frady and her husband, Asbury, all of Whittier, Marie Swanger and her husband, Bobby, of Waynesville, Joyce Smith Sitton of Sylva and Terrie Snyder and her husband, Frank Hinson, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one stepson, Alvin Carter and his wife, Elaine, of Sylva; four stepdaughters, Darlene Burrell and her husband, Donnie, Rosetta Gates and her husband, Donald, Irene Gregg and her husband, Bobby, all of Sylva, and Debbie Tucker and her husband, Ron, of High Point; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Old Savannah Baptist Church. The Revs. Dennis Burrell and Eddie Dietz officiated. Burial was in the Old Savannah cemetery. William McInvaille Jr.

TAMPA, Fla. — William E. McInvaille Jr., 59, of Tampa, Fla., died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, in Tampa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise M. and William E. McInvaille Sr.; and a sister with whom he had lived with in Waynesville, Sarah Anne Judy Ray. McInvaille was a 1962 graduate of Waynesville Township High School and a member of the band. He obtained a bachelor’s and a master’s degrees from University of South Florida. He was assistant to the dean at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa. Surviving is one sister, Sandra Thatcher Rector of Odessa, Fla. A gathering of storytelling and remembrance led by Donald Davis and David Morgan will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church of Waynesville. Trinity Memorial Gardens in New Port Richey is in charge of arrangements.

James R. Warren

CANDLER — James Robert Warren age 79 died Tuesday, Jan. 06, 2004, at Mission St. Joseph’s Health System. Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth B. Gorham MAGGIE VALLEY — Ruth Alan Braymer Gorham, 91, of Maggie Valley, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Samuel C. Green

CANTON — The Rev. Samuel Charles “Jake” Green, 77, of 46 Star Ridge Road, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late William Harley and Nancy Elizabeth Jones Green. He was employed by Stamey Roofing for 15 years and was an evangelist with The Church of God. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Helen Shipman Green, who died in 2002; three granddaughters; and two brothers. Surviving are three sons, Gene West and his wife, Debbie, of Asheville, Charles J. Green and his wife, Irene, of Canton, and Terry L. Green and his wife, Carrie, of Canton; three daughters, Nancy Smith of South Carolina, Delores Payne and her husband, Bobby Joe, of Canton, and Wanda Green and her husband, Troy, of Canton; 15 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren. Graveside serviced will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Liberty Baptist Church cemetery. The Revs. Betty Drake and Jerry Mathis will officiate. Pallbearers will be Matthew Rathbone, Junior Singleton, Jeremiah Green, Allen Mathis, Samuel Green and Shannon Williams. The family will receive friends at the home of Charles and Irene Green, 3171 Asheville Highway, Canton. Charles R. Haynes

Charles Richard Haynes of Waynesville died Wednesday, June 11, 2003.

A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Fulmer and Eliza McGowan Haynes. After graduating from Clyde High School, he served in World War II. He worked briefly for Champion International. Most of his adult life, he worked alongside his wife in a poultry business and later at a daycare. He was a member of Dellwood United Methodist Church and VFW Post 5202. He volunteered at The Open Door soup kitchen.

He was also preceded in death by a son, David Lee Haynes; a sister, Loree Henson; and a brother, Gerald Edwin Haynes.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Roberta Moody Haynes; one daughter, Charleen Haynes Ballard; one sister, Joann Leonard of Clyde; one brother, Harold Haynes of Hazelwood; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Dellwood United Methodist Church followed by military rites conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47.

The family will receive friends after the services at the church.

Chonda J. Hill

MAGGIE VALLEY — Chonda Jolene Hill, 28, of Maggie Valley, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Britthaven Nursing Home in Franklin.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of Joe and Pat Hill of Easley, S.C., and Angelus and Steve Knight of Maggie Valley. She was a 1992 graduate of Tuscola High School and was a cashier at Phil’s Grocery in Maggie Valley.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Wesley and Ann Gibson; her paternal grandparents, Sam and Mary Hill; and her step-grandparents, Smith and Faye Knight.

Surviving are a son, Allen Cagle of Maggie Valley; a daughter, Joei Zeit of Maggie Valley; two brothers, Wesley Moody of Haywood County and Tony Williams of Easley; and two sisters, Cheryl Moody Dyson of Haywood County and Michelle Allen of Greenville, S.C. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Revs. Ronnie Powell and Erma Bond will officiate.

The family will have a private burial service at a later date at Dellwood cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chris Cagle, Andrew Carver, Jerry Christopher, Brian Bradley, Scott Rowlins, Jerimiah Parton, Jeremy Carver, Jeff Sutton, Jeff Smith and Bobby Knight. Honorary pallbearers will be Wesley Bradley, Rick Rice, Danny Howell and Dale McMahan.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the family home in Maggie Valley.

Francis Payne Jr.

CRUSO — Francis Payne Jr., 67, of Cruso, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Francis Payne Sr. and Ruth Medford. He retired from the National Park Service in 1991. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He later joined the Army Reserves, the N.C. National Guard and was a member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Emily Shawn Payne.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Helen Ledbetter Payne; one daughter, Rebecca Cooley and her husband, Kevin, of Canton; one son, Derek Payne and his wife, Shannon, of Canton; two sisters, Marie Baker and Bonnie Payne, both of Candler; a half sister, Blanche Brown of Candler; two brothers, Sherman Payne of Canton and Walter Payne of South Carolina; two half brothers, Bill Payne of Canton and Glen Payne of Candler; and three grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. The Revs. Jerry Ensley and Bobby Winebarger Jr. officiated. Burial followed in the New Cruso cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 47 and the VFW Post No. 5202.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Betty N. Chambers

Betty Nichols Chambers, 75, of Walter C Road, Waynesville, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Silas and Annie Cabe Nichols. She retired from Wellco Enterprises.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Corbett Chambers Jr., who died in 1975; three sisters, Edna Kerley, Gladys Ray and Mary Lampley; two brothers, Jack and Harry Nichols; and a grandson, Stephen Chambers.

Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Morrow and her husband, Bennie, of Waynesville; one son, David Chambers; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Cove Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Jesse Hollingsworth and Bobby Rogers will officiate.

The family will receive friends following the service.

James T. Herron

WHITTIER — James Therlo Herron, 66, of Camp Creek Road, Whittier, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Swain County Hospital.

A native of Hazel Creek, he was the son of the late Nathan Earnest and Josie Laney Herron. He was a 1955 graduate of Swain County High School and had been a resident of Jackson County for the past 40 years. He was a land surveyor, in business since 1959, with offices in Swain, Jackson and Haywood counties.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Harlan Herron.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Patty Lou Reagan Herron; three sons, Randy Herron and his wife, Karen, of Waynesville, David and Jeff Herron, both of Whittier; a daughter, Sylvia Elizabeth “Beth” Higdon, and her husband, Gus, of Bryson City; a sister, Helen Kirkland of Bryson City; and three grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Moody Funeral Home in Bryson City. The Rev. Tom Harris will officiate. Burial will be at the Reagan Family cemetery in Whittier.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Nannie B. Wells

Nannie B. Wells, 87, formerly of Bethel, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the Brian Center.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Henry F. and Alice Kerley Miller. She worked in the piece good department of Belk of Waynesville for more than 20 years. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and a life member of the Woman’s Sorority of Christian Services.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ellis Wells, who died in 1983; a daughter, Judy Wilson and her husband, Charles Wilson; and two sisters, Hortense Grasty and Lenoir Bridges.

Surviving are two daughters, Joy Truitt and her husband, Lynn, and Linda Hannah and her husband, Dennis, both of Waynesville; one sister, Marie Ensley of Old Town, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. The Rev. Art O’Neil officiated. Burial was in Greenhill cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

The family received friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Natalie N. Schenke

Natalie Sue Noll Schenke, 70, of Waynesville, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native and 41-year resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, she had also resided in Sarasota, Fla., for 26 years prior to moving to Waynesville last year. She was the daughter of the late Arthur E. and Beulah Mae Hillard Noll. She was a member of the Sarasota Yacht Club and was a member of Roselawn Community Baptist Church of Cincinnati.

She was preceded in death by a sister, June Lessel.

Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Robert C. Schenke; four daughters, Linda Vining and her husband, Bill, of Naperville, Ill., Donna Swindell and her husband, Tod, of Tucson, Ariz., Gale Smith and her husband, Sherman, of Eugene, Ore., Karen Rogers and her husband, Scott, of Cincinnati, Ohio; one son, Steven Schenke, and his wife, Kim, of Nokomis, Fla.; two brothers, William B. Noll of Panama City Beach, Fla., and James Noll of Cincinnati; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Dorothy H. Miller

Dorothy Clara Hembree Miller, 74, passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, after a brief illness at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was born on Sept. 10, 1929, in Haywood County to the late Harry and Clara Medford Hembree. She graduated from the Waynesville Township High School in 1947. She then married Mr. Linuel Miller in November of 1947. She became widowed in 1954. Through the years she lovingly served her family and was very active in church. She was currently a member at Waynesville Christian Fellowship Church. God gave her a very unique prayer ministry for people all over the world. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband Linuel Ray Miller in 1954; one brother, Bobby Hembree; and one sister, Marie Hembree. She is survived by her son, Philip and his wife, Peggy Miller, of Lyman, S.C.; a daughter, Mary Ann and her husband, Don Smith, of Waynesville; one brother, Gibert Hembree of Michigan; two sisters, Lillian Hannah of Waynesville and Dolores Helmly of Cumming, Ga.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Waynesville Christian Fellowship Church at Lake Junaluska. Elder Clayton Davis officiated. Burial was in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Visitation was held from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Garrett Funeral Home. At other times, the family can be reached at their home in Waynesville. James R. Cutshaw

James Robert Cutshaw, 79, of Waynesville, passed away Jan. 18, 2004, at Canton Christian Convalescent Center. Born in Haywood County on Oct. 6, 1924, to the late J.P. and Hazel Evans Cutshaw, he married Ruby Green in 1945 in Clayton, Ga. They have always made their home in Waynesville. Mr. Cutshaw worked at American Enka for over 40 years performing various duties. He served as a deacon of the Richland Missionary Baptist Church where he was a member. His family expressed that enjoyed walking, watching wrestling and playing softball with his friends and family. He is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Truman, Kenneth, Troy, Tommy and Joe Cutshaw; two sisters, Willie Pitt and Maye Cutshaw. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Ruby Green Cutshaw of Waynesville; one son, James and his wife, Melanie Cutshaw, of Waynesville; one daughter, Barbara and her husband, Charles Miller, of Waynesville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at the Richland Missionary Baptist Church in Waynesville. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church. The Rev. Virginia L. Shell

LAKE JUNALUSKA ‹ Virginia Law Shell, 80, of South Lakeshore Drive, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Dothan, Ala., and was the daughter of the late Clinton and Margaret Stokes Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Burleigh Law, who died a martyr in 1964 while serving as a lay missionary in the Congo. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Clinton Williams. She attended Asbury College, was a graduate of Florida State University and Alliance Francais in Belgium. She received her master of arts from Scaritt College. She was employed as director of family worship for the United Methodist Church and was instrumental in developing the marriage enrichment program for the United Methodist Church. She was a lifetime member of the board of directors of Good News, had published three books, and had touched the lives of thousands. She was also a member of Long¹s Chapel United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Donald L. Shell; one daughter, Margaret Howell and her husband, Andrew, who are missionaries in France; four sons, David Law and his wife, Leveda, and Paul Law, who are missionaries in the Congo, Allyn Shell and his wife, Carol, of Silver Spring, Md., and Peter Shell and his wife Charlotte, of Schweinfurt, Germany; two sisters Jane Kelley of Lake Junaluska and Anne Williams of Tallahassee, Fla.; one brother, George Williams of Rockledge, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Long¹s Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Robert E. Fuquay Jr. and Bishop Edward Tullis will officiate. Maggie Green

CANTON ‹ Maggie Reece Huffman Green, 88, of 477 Mount Zion Church Road and formerly of Canton, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Thomasville Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Lucy Inman Reece. Mrs. Green moved to Thomasville in 1978, was a homemaker and attended Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Thomasville. She was preceded in death by her late husbands, Reath Huffman, who passed away in 1956; and Theadore Green, who passed away in 1974; and also preceded in death by a daughter, Geraldine Inman. Surviving are three sons, William Huffman and his wife, Mary Lou, of Thomasville, Carroll Huffman and his wife, Mary Ruth of Greenville, S.C., and Thadus Huff and his wife, Shirley of Thomasville; two brothers, Clyde Reece of Canton and Charles Reece of Canton and two sisters; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 30 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Crawford/Ray Funeral Home with the Rev. Ernest Messer officiating. Burial was in Riverside cemetery. Jack Long

Jack Long, 59, of Saddle Ridge Drive, Waynesville, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County. He was the son of the late Lawrence and Elsie Sutton Long. He is survived by two daughters, Lesa Chambers and Rebecca Price, both of Waynesville; two sons, David Long of Waynesville and James Ashe of Sevierville, Tenn.; two sisters, Oma Lee Gunter of Waynesville and Annie Allison of Hot Springs; three brothers, Robert and Junior Long, both of Newport, Tenn., and Claude Long of Waynesville; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the Cove Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Billy Ferguson and the Rev. Jerry Nelson officiated. Burial was in the Davis cemetery. The family received friends from noon to 2 p.m. Monday prior to the services at the church. Pallbearers were Richard Gaddis, Bryan Chambers, Steve and Tony Long, Keith and Owen Shetley. Wilma M. Hooper

Wilma Moss Hooper, 86, of Waynesville, passed away Jan. 16, 2004, Friday evening at the Brian Center. She was born on May 15, 1917, in Jackson County to the late Lambert and Octavia Moss. She was a Wellco retiree after 25 years and was a member of Hazelwood Baptist Church and the Waynesville chapter of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl D. Hooper in 2000; one brother, Wymer Moss; and one sister, Melba Norris. She is survived by her two sons Ross Hooper and his wife, Her Lou; and Gary Hooper, both of Waynesville; one daughter, Carlene and her husband, R.L. Madison, of High Point; one brother, Leighton Moss of Glenville; two sisters Mildred Moody and Selma Bryson both of Rock Hill, S.C.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Services were held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at the Hazelwood Baptist Church. The Rev. Don Letzring officiated. Burial was in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. David D. Shepard

CANTON ‹David D. Shepard, 75, of 3690 Newfound Road, Canton, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at his residence. He was a native of Macon County and a son of the late Clyde and Minnie Lanning Shepard. He was a member of Plains United Methodist Church for 50 years. David retired from Champion International with 33 years of service. Upon his retirement he was the owner of Daves Christmas Tree Farm for 15 years. He was a United States Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Barbara J. Shepard; three daughters and their husbands, Janet and Grover Honeycutt of Knoxville, Tenn., Pam and Bob Jennings of Virginia Beach, Va., and Patti and Mark Green of Canton; sister, Lula B. Hooper of Shingle Town, Calif.; brother, Vance Shepard of Lake Junaluska; and four grandchildren, Jeremy and Jordan Honeycutt, Kristen Jennings and Misti Bud Green. The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Plains United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kelley Jones and Mr. Grover Honeycutt officiating. Burial was in Bon-A-Venture cemetery on Newfound Road in Canton. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services in Canton. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, Home Health Building, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721. CANTON ‹ Jeremy Shannon Seeley, 28, of 80 Raby St., Canton, and Fort Campbell, Ky., passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004. Crawford/Ray Funeral Home is caring for the Seeley family and will announce the arrangements.

Walter Reynolds Jr., 51, of Westwood Circle, Waynesville, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville will announce arrangements.

Kristine A. Gillet

Kristine Alison Gillet, 51, of Waynesville, died Monday, May 17, 2004, at Mission Hospitals. A native of Milwaukee, Wis., she was a loving daughter of Dorothy L. Gillet of Milwaukee and the late James Gillet. She was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh and received her master’s degree in nursing from the University of Virginia. She taught clinical nursing at Mission/St. Joseph through Western Carolina University. In addition, she helped found and operate Saints and Scholars Book Co. She was a woman of strong faith who was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sylva and often attended the Basilica of St. Lawrence D.M. in Asheville. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Jeffrey M. Minick; her loving children, Kaylie, Jake, Jon Pat and Jeremy Minick; and her dear sisters, Karyl Boyd and Debra Gillet Horvath and her husband, Richard. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Ray Williams at 2 p.m. Friday at the Basilica of St. Lawrence, followed by a reception in Laurentine Hall. Interment will be private. A rosary and vigil are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue after which the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Triumph of the Cross Conf., Helen Gordon, 4 Gudger Chapel Road, Leicester, NC 28748; or donations may be made directly to her family to help with her children’s education expenses.
