Mae Burr Setzer
Mae Burr Setzer, 74, of Haywood County, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Haywood County on Dec. 15, 1930, to the late William Manson and Annie Mae Messer Owen.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joe Brown; her second, husband Willard Setzer; one brother, Manuel Owen; and one sister, Lavada Gibson.
Surviving is one son, Johnny Mac Brown and his wife, Sheila, of Clyde; two sisters, Vicky Bryson and her husband, Charles, of Sylva, nd and Norma Jean Carpendar and her husband, William, of Maggie Valley; four brothers, Clifford Owen of Waynesville, Ray Owen of Clyde, Medford Owen of Waynesville and Danny Owen of Clyde; two sisters, Lois Harris of Waynesville and Lucy Ford of Newport, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Rev. Jerry Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhill cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Phillips, Shannon Bryson, Mike Bryson, Thomas Bryson and Brad Phillips.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 pm Friday at the funeral home.

Adam B. Price
Adam Brently Price, 30, of 30 Leming Lane, Waynesville, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at his residence.
A native of Haywood County, he was the son of DeAnna Leming Price of Waynesville and the late William Price. He enjoyed working on computers and raising pit bulldogs. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Julia Price of Waynesville; two brothers, Christopher Price and his wife, Tessie, of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Anthony Price and his wife, Janice, of Sylva; his maternal grandmother, Blanche Leming, of Waynesville; his fiancée, Tana Smith of Canton; and two nieces and a nephew.
Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Baptist Church cemetery. The Revs. Jerry Nelson and Bruce D. Cayton and deacon Eric Sutton will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Bobby and Brian Leming, Todd Greene, Todd Wilde, Ralph, Ronnie and Tony Price and Chris Ladowski. Honorary pallbearers will be Ryan and John Messer.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Wells Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Waynesville.

Marian M. Petterson
Marian Jeannette Mahanay Petterson, 75, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at Mission Hospitals.
Mrs. Petterson was born April 20, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pa., and was raised in Webster Groves, Mo. She worked as an X-ray technician at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. She is a former resident of Cullowhee and Fort Myers, Fla. She, along with her late husband, William “Bill” Petterson, who preceded her in death in 1990, and the L.F. Petterson’s, were former co-owner/operators of My Grandma’s Pancake Barn in Sylva and local KFC restaurants. She was the daughter of the late Stuart Cornelius and Violet Marguerite Cunliff Mahanay.
Surviving are four daughters, Lieutenant Colonel Peggy Jones and her husband, Dennis, of San Antonio, Texas, Nancy Nixon and her husband, Steve of Wilkesboro, Colonel Kathy Kasun of Virginia Beach, Va., and Patty Boyd and her husband, Reese, of Waynesville; sister, June Shoulberg and her husband, Ken, of Webster Groves, Mo.; grandchildren, Alan and Spencer Jones, Lauren Nixon, Kristen, Karin and Erik Westerberg; Erin and Brittany Boyd; and one great-grandson, Hayden Jones.
Services were held at noon Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home, 714 W. Main St., Sylva. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Charles L. Conard
CLYDE — Charles Lee Conard, 65, of 56 Fire Fly Place, Clyde, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at his residence.
He was a native of Haywood County and the son of Ruby Ford Conard and the late James Howard Conard. He was a self-employed carpenter, a member of Center Pigeon Baptist Church, a member of Walkfar Coon Hunters of Haywood County and a lifelong bluegrass musician.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Jean Stevenson; and a brother, Larry Conard.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jane Ann Henderson Conard; three sons, Jeff and his wife, Billie Conard, Kim D. Conard and Brian and his wife, Laura Murray Conard, all of Canton; sister, Gerri Cook of Canton; three brothers, Bobby Joe Conard of Waynesville, Howard Conard of Asheboro and Jim Conard of Thomasville; and four grandchildren, Jarrod, Austin, Eli and Jenna.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Center Pigeon Baptist Church. The Revs. Alan Blanton, R.G. Garland and Claude Conard will officiate. Burial will follow in Old Thickety cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Canton.

Roy H. Warren
CANTON — Roy Holden Warren, 68, died Sunday, June 19, 2005, at his residence. He was a native of Haywood County and the son of the late Arthur McKinley and Mary Etta Birchfield Warren.
He is survived by a son, Pete Warren of Canton; two daughters, Cindy W. Rogers and her husband Kenny of Canton, and Lena Jaynes of S.C.; a sister, Ruth Lineberger; a brother, R. A. Warren; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, with the Rev. T. M. Gibson officiating. The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Dr. Mack S. Setser
LAKE JUNALUSKA — Dr. Mack Slagle Setser, 85, of 44 Huckleberry Lane, died Monday, June 20, 2005. He was born in Franklin on Jan. 6, 1920, and was a dedicated son to his belated parents, Joe and Harriet Setser. Surviving Dr. Setser is his wife of 60 years, Beulah McMurray Setser; daughter Vicky Setser Hinkley and husband Randy Hinkley of Lake Junaluska; son Hal William Setser and wife Suzy Setser of Wingate; a granddaughter, Jill Hinkley Barker and husband Bill Barker of Lake Junaluska; a grandson, Clayton Williams Setser of Wingate; and a great-granddaughter, Kennedy Victoria Barker of Lake Junaluska.
Mack is also survived by sisters, Margaret Setser Ramsey of Franklin and Jane Setser Wells of Salisbury. In addition to his parents, Mack was preceded in death by brothers George Setser and Tom Setser and sister Mary Jo Setser Sloan.
Dr. Setser was a graduate of Franklin High School, N.C. State University and the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and obtained the rank of Major. He established and owned the Junaluska Animal Hospital, where he practiced veterinary medicine until his retirement. Mack was very active in his profession as a veterinarian. He served on the committee which established the School of Veterinary Medicine at N.C. State University in Raleigh. He was selected by his peers as N.C. Veterinarian of the Year and was a past president of the N.C. Veterinary Medical Association. He also was a member and served as chairman of the Junaluska Sanitary District.
Dr. Setser loved Haywood County and served his community in many ways. He was the chairman of the Haywood County School Board during consolidation of Pisgah and Tuscola high schools and was instrumental in the founding of Haywood Community College. Dr. Setser was an active member of Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees and was a member of the Tullis Sunday school class.
Mack was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He cherished his entire family and was blessed to have had so many friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert E. Fuquay Jr. and the Rev. Woody Adams officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Wayne D. Trantham
Wayne Dwight Trantham, 66, of Waynesville, died Sunday, June 19, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
A native and life-long resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Grover and Agnes Rogers Trantham. He was employed at Dayco for 32 years before his retirement.
He is survived by two daughters, Keisha Trantham and Joy Haney and her husband Terry of Waynesville; two sons, David Trantham of Waynesville and Johnny Mehaffey of Clyde; five sisters, Bonnie Ross and Linda Adam, both of Waynesville, Wilma Dayton of Canton, Marie Brown of Virginia and Katherine Rogers of Charlotte; three brothers, Clinton and Dean Trantham, both of Waynesville, and Doyle Trantham of Tennessee; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, with the Rev. Harry Worley and the Rev. Ricky Mason officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and at other times, at the families’ own residences. Serving as pallbearers will be David Trantham, Jim Meyers, Chad Heatherly, Andy Bolin, Shawn Messer and Bryan Bryant.
Joseph McLaughlin
WEAVERVILLE — Joseph “JoJo” Jordon-McLaughlin, 21, of Supply and a former resident of Weaverville, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2005, from injuries sustained in a tragic automobile and pedestrian accident. A native of Buncombe County, he had resided in Supply since 1998.
He was employed as a heavy equipment operator with Atlantic Yard Care. “JoJo” will be deeply missed by his family and friends and his free spirit will always be remembered by those blessed to know him.
He is survived by his mother, Brenda Russ Blackwell and step-father Joseph Blackwell of Supply; his father, Willie McLaughlin Sr. and step-mother Debra McLaughlin of Swannanoa; a stepfather, Terry Bethune of Boiling Springs Lakes; a maternal grandfather, George Henry Russ Sr. of Hendersonville; paternal grandparents, James and Maryann McLaughlin of Swannanoa; his sisters, Tonya McLaughlin of Swannanoa, Jennifer Force of Myrtle Beach, Holli Vanover of Carolina Beach, and Charity Hammon of Alabama; brothers Willie McLaughlin Jr. of Swannanoa, Brian Blackwell of Supply, Joseph Blackwell Jr. of Supply and Bruce Hammon of Old Fort.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Higgins-Russ Family cemetery in Weaverville. The Rev. Eric Sams will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Crawford / Ray Funeral Home in Canton prior to the graveside service.
James Leatherwood
CANDLER — James Murray Leatherwood, 75, of 340 Treetops Drive, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at St Joseph Campus, Mission Hospitals.
Dr. Leatherwood was born in Waynesville and was a son of the late Glenn Joseph and Alma Duckett Leatherwood and was also preceded in death by a sister Mary Jane Leatherwood Crandall. He was retired as a science professor emeritus from NC State University.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce Layton Leatherwood; one daughter, Dr. Janet K. Leatherwood; four grandsons, Andrew, David, James and Austin; and a brother, Glenn J. Leatherwood Jr.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Dr. Robert M. Blackburn and the Rev. Dr. Richard Smyth officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Building 1, Asheville, NC 28801. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue in Asheville is assisting with the arrangements.
Eric L. Hipps
CANTON — Eric Lynn Hipps, 51, of the Beaverdam community, died Sunday, July 31, 2005 at Memorial Mission Hospital. He was a native of Haywood County and the son of Mary Gladys Mann Hipps of Canton and the late Neal Bennett Hipps. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, David Neal and Marvin Lane Hipps. He was a fiberline operator with Blue Ridge Paper Products for 27 years and a member of Beaverdam United Methodist Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Erica Bailey and her husband Jay of Clinton, Tenn.; a son, Joseph Richard Hipps and his wife Patricia of Asheville; a sister, Kathy Stockton of Candler; a brother, Marion Bennett Hipps of Canton; six grandchildren, Sebastian and Trinity Bailey, Dustin Lumpkins, Christian, Matthew and Taylor Hipps; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, with the Rev. Naomi King and Rev. Gene Worley officiating. The family received friends prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made for funeral expenses.
Donnie R. Pee
CANTON — Donnie Ray Pee of Huffman Drive died at his residence. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and a son of Charles W. and Wanda Pee. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles “Chuck” William Pee, Jr.; and grandfather, Abe Huffman. Pee was employed by Precision Products of Asheville and loved NASCAR racing but most of all he loved his daughter. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Kelly Cierra Pee of Arden; maternal grandmother, Phoebe Huffman of Canton; paternal grandmother, Evelyn Simone of La.; and two brothers, Ronnie Lee Pee and his wife Christy of Sylva, and Jason B. Pee of Charleston, S.C. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, with Rev. Gary Fender officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Michael E. Greenarch
LEICESTER — Michael Eugene “Mike” Greenarch Sr., 47, of 75 Mailon King Road, Leicester, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at Memorial Mission Hospital. Greenarch was born in Haywood County and was a son of Ella Robinson of Canton, and the late Charles Greenarch. He was employed as a driver for Johnson Salvage Yard. Greenarch was a member of Fairmont Baptist Church in Enka-Candler. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Paula “Kaye” Wyatt Greenarch; a daughter, Carla Burris of Canton; two sons, Michael Eugene Greenarch Jr. and Eddie Greenarch of the home; a step-son Terry Holland Jr. and his wife Leigh of Skyland; two sisters, Debra Green and her husband Dan, and Cheryl Hill; a brother David Greenarch and his wife Sue, all of Canton; his step-mother, Carolyn Greenarch of Clyde; and five grandchildren. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Louis Grant officiating. Burial will be at Payne’s Chapel cemetery. Hershel G. Griffin
CANTON — Hershel General Griffin, 80, of Trammell Avenue, Canton, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at his home. A lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late William Elbert and Sally Williams Griffin. Griffin retired from Champion International in 1987 with 35 years of dedicated service and served in the N.C. National Guard. He was a well-known bear hunter, avid fisherman and loved to camp at Lake Chatuge with his family and many friends. Griffin's love for the mountains, for his family and the true kindness he always shared with those blessed to know him shall never be forgotten. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Leonard, Glenn and Danny Griffin. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Willie Mae Reece Griffin; daughters, Brenda Matthews and her husband Gary of Canton, Linda G. Krieble of Telford, Tenn., and Nancy Griffin of Canton; sisters, Ernestine Lanning of Canton and Lynn G. Smallwood of Brevard; brothers, Ray Griffin of Waynesville and Roy Griffin of Canton; grandchildren, Kendra Matthews, Kaine Matthews and wife Ashley, Ivy Palmer and husband Jerome, Samantha Hill, Michael Krieble and wife Kesha, Sarah Hyatt and Jason Hyatt; and great-grandchildren, Ethan Zachary Palmer, Emily Palmer, William Vaughn, Faythe Hatherlee, Savannah Hatherlee and Jackson Kole Matthews. Jeffrey L. Simmons
CLYDE — Jeffrey Lee “Jeff” Simmons, 24, of Thompson Cove Road, died Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, from injuries sustained in a boating accident at Lake Douglas, Tenn.
He was a native of Pensacola, Fla. but lived in Haywood County since 1984.
He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Hubert Simmons and Voncile R. King; and father-in-law, Peter Walsh.
Jeffrey was a 1998 graduate of Pisgah High School and attended Western Carolina University and Haywood Community College. He was a construction supervisor with Palmer Construction of Waynesville.
In his youth, Jeff attended Canton Wesleyan Church and has remained a man of faith. He was an avid baseball player and golfer.
He is survived by his wife of three years, Sky Walsh Simmons; parents, Michael L. Simmons of Clyde and Diane Hardy Simmons of Canton; maternal grandparents, Montez and Maloye Ferguson of Cantonment, Fla.; mother-in-law, Karol Walsh of Cullowhee; two brothers, Kyle Simmons of Clyde and Kevin Simmons of Canton; one sister-in-law, Sally Freeman and her husband Kerry of Rincon, Ga.; one brother-in-law, Jesse Walsh of Cullowhee; two nieces, Kate and Anna Freeman of Rincon, Ga.; and his extended family, Greg and Diane Palmer and family of Waynesville.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Morning Star cemetery, with the Rev. Perry Hines officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
Serving as pallbearers will be Aaron Ingle, Aaron Cassels, Heath Pressley, Hubert Thomas, Greg Palmer, Jason Queen, Scott Turner, Camden Warren, Tyler Palmer and Mike Millares.
Any and all who met Jeff loved him, he was good to everyone and good at all he did. We love you Jeffrey. “And ever has it been, the heart knows not its’ own depths until the hour of separation.”
Vena Maye Carver
Vena Maye Carver, 66, of Waynesville, passed away Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at Chestnut Park Rest Home.
She was born in Haywood Countyon July 31, 1939, to the late Sam and Kate Rathbone Miller.
She loved gardening, painting, dancing, collecting angels, and she especially loved being with friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hayes O. Carver; one son, Jerry Rickman; one granddaughter, Jenine Rickman; and by her second husband, James Cagle.
She is survived by a son, Norman Rickman of Waynesville; three brothers, Sammie Miller of Ga.; Johnny and Willie Miller, both of Maggie Valley; two sisters, Geneva Munn of Wash., and Myrtle Sutton of Maggie Valley; four grandchildren, Jeremiah Rickman, Joshua Rickman, Homer Franklin and Luke Cagle; three great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive her.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations, with the Rev. Jerry Nelson and the Rev. Terry Greene officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

James Marlan Vaughn
CLYDE — James Marlan Vaughn, 62, passed away Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
He was born on July 5, 1943, to the late Elmer and Mary Vaughn.
He served in the US Navy for eight years. He was a truck driver for 36 years. He retired from Landstar Ranger and he was a three million-mile safe driver. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Vernon Vaughn.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Colleen Vaughn; one son, Kevin Vaughn and his wife Erica of Clyde; a daughter, Linda Vaughn of Clyde; two grandchildren, Kyle Vaughn and his fiancée Ivey Henry and Kameron Vaughn; a great-grandchild, Kadan Vaughn; one sister, Diane Cuccatti of Roswell, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Marylou Whidden of Canton; a very special niece, Holly Smith of Clyde; and a special friend for over 40 years, Glenn Swanner and his family.
Service will be held in the Mausoleum Chapel at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park at 11 a.m. Saturday, with his son, Kevin, conducting the memorial services.
Flowers will be accepted, but memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
