Joan Little, age 65, of West Jefferson, passed away Monday, January 2, 2006, at her home. Mrs. Little was born October 18, 1940 in Tazewell, Virginia to the late Woodrow and Yuna Wilcox Dixon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers; Lester and Junior Clark and Richard Dixon.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 6, 2006 at Lansing Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dwight Barker officiated. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 7 - 9 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2006 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. Flowers were appreciated.
Mrs. Little is survived by her husband, Jack Little; two sons, Michael Edward Little of West Jefferson, NC and Timothy M. Little of Kailua, Hawaii; one daughter, Janet O’Brian of Bossier City, Louisiana; one sister, Betty Clark of Lansing, NC. Also surviving are four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

June Flossie Wilcox Mullins

June Flossie Wilcox Mullins, age 85 of Wilson, N.C., formerly of Ashe, died Sunday, January 1, 2006 at the NC Special Care Center in Wilson, N.C. Mrs. Mullins was born May 22, 1920 in Ashe County to the late William and Ali Stansberry Wilcox. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne and Lee Wilcox; three sisters, Carrie Miller, Norma Kilby and Mae Ham.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, January 6, 2005 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Herb Parunak officiated. Burial followed in the Nella cemetery.
Mrs. Mullins is survived by one daughter, Linda Rosenbaum of Landenberg, Pa.; three sisters, Lessie Roop of Whitetop, Va., Clyde Osborne of Jefferson, N.C. and Flora Sullivan of Lansing, N.C.; granddaughter, Kimberly Jester and husband, Paul, of Landenberg, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Samantha & Zachary Jester of Landenberg, Pa.; several nieces and nephews.

Thomas Foy Prichard
Taylorsville
May 8, 1912 - January 3, 2006
Rev. Thomas (Tom) Foy Prichard, age 93 of 1374 Old Charlotte Rd., Taylorsville, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2006 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. He was born in Alexander County on May 8, 1912 and was the son of the late Carl L. Prichard and Minnie Little Prichard. He was a minister, a member of Liberty United Methodist Church and a member of the Western North Carolina Conference.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Royal W. Pritchard; three sisters, Pearl Moxley, Janie Lee Steel and Ann Upright; one brother, Bill Prichard; and one grandson, Dain Curtis Prichard.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Sloop Prichard of the home; one son, Jerry T. Prichard of Taylorsville; six brothers, Jacob of Graham, David of Burlington, Bruce, Parks, Dan and Lindon Prichard, all of Taylorsville; three sisters, Nora Johnson of Statesville, Rose Jones of Black Mountain and Lucy Combs of North Wilkesboro; four grandchildren, Roger Pritchard of Taylorsville, Jerry A. Prichard of Statesville, Donnie Prichard of Stony Point and Chad Southers of Taylorsville; five great-grandchildren, Amber Prichard, Maia Southers, Curtis Prichard, Mallory Prichard and Lucus Prichard.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 6, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Liberty United Methodist Church with Rev. Brian Rogers, Rev. Donnie Durham and Rev. Terry Prichard officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Thursday evening at the church from 7 – 8:30 p.m.

Gale Spencer Roark

April 25, 1921 - January 6, 2006
Mr. Gale Spencer Roark, age 84, of Jefferson, died Friday morning at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 9, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roger Blevins officiating. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites.
The family received friends from 1 - 2 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2006 prior to the funeral service at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Roark was born in Ashe County on April 25, 1921 to the late Joshua Roark and the late Ella Graybeal Roark. He worked as a superintendent for a mushroom cannery. He was a member of the Army and served in World War II receiving a Purple Heart.
Mr. Roark is survived by, his wife of 53 years, Juanita Dolinger Roark; one brother, Robert Roark of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Grace Webb of Maryland, Irene Roberts of Pennsylvania; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Stacy Shepherd Sturgill
Lansing
April 17, 1915 - January 8, 2006
Stacy Shepherd Sturgill, age 90 of Lansing, N.C., the Helton Community, died Sunday, January 8, 2006 at the Margate Health and ReHab Center.
Mrs. Sturgill was born in Wilkes County, N.C. on April 17, 1915 to Rudy and Etta Royal Shepherd. She was preceded in death by her husband, Isom Sturgill. She was a member of Sturgills Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Sturgills Baptist Church. Rev. Lloyd Day will officiate. Burial will follow in the Byers cemetery in Whitetop, Va. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 10, 2006 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Byers cemetery Fund, c/o Jay Baldwin, Whitetop, VA. The family will meet at the home of Linda Howell, 411 Joe Weaver Rd., Lansing, NC 28643.
Mrs. Sturgill is survived by two sons, Johnny Shepherd of Lansing, N.C., Jerry Shepherd of Jefferson, N.C.; two daughters, Pat Lawrence of Crumpler, N.C.; Linda Howell of Lansing, N.C.; step-daughter, Louella Hubble of Marion, Va.; brother, Fred Shepherd of West Jefferson, N.C.; sister:, Dolly Perry of Creston, N.C.; several step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Mildred McGuire Flynn
August 23, 1928 - February 1, 2006
Mrs. Mildred McGuire Flynn, age 77, died Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson, N.C.
Mrs. Flynn was born August 23, 1928 in Ashe County to Herbert Raymond and Ruth Wadford McGuire. She was married to the late William Flynn and spent most of her life in Winston-Salem, NC. She recently returned to Hillview Family Care Home in Ashe County.
Mrs. Flynn is survived by two sisters, Estelle Smith (widow) of Greensboro, Mary Norman and husband, Richard of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three brothers, H.R. McGuire, Jr. and wife, Destie of Lenoir, N.C., Tommy McGuire and wife, Maxine, of Kansas City, Mo., Haskell McGuire and Anne of West Jefferson, N.C.; one daughter, Judy Hubble and husband, Bob, three grandchildren, Karen Sue Barber, Melissa Lynn Mecham, Brian Ray Hubble; four great-grandchildren, Emma Rain Mecham, Bailey Amanda Barber, Zachry Brett Barber and Braxton Andrew, all of Ogden, Utah.

Ralph Edward Goss
Lansing
September 10, 1914 - February 2, 2006
Ralph Edward Goss age 91 of Lansing, N.C., died Thursday, February 2, 2006 at his residence.
Mr. Goss was born in Lansing, N.C. on September 10, 1914 to the late Cicero Lee and Eleanor Lillian Barr Goss. He was one of the oldest living Masons in North Carolina. He was a member of Sabbath Home Baptist Church. Mr. Goss worked operating heavy machinery and farmed during all his retirement years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Lee Faw Goss. He was a very special brother and a friend to all.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 5, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Larry Shepherd officiated. Masonic burial rites followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends Saturday, February 4, 2006 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home.
Mr. Goss is survived by one brother, Harry Goss of Lansing, N.C. and several nieces and nephews.

Peggy Jane Greer Haas

Died February 1, 2006
Peggy Jane Greer Haas, age 67, of 120 Oak Street, Jefferson, NC, died Wednesday, February 1, 2006, at the home of her son in Sparta.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Libby Haas of Sparta; two grandchildren, Matthew Haas of Sparta and Jennifer Bryant and her husband, Lester Ray, of Mt. Airy; a great-grandchild, Kathryn Michele Bryant; a sister, Frances Nadeen Danner and her husband, Robert, of Orlando, Fla; two brothers, Robert “Buck” Greer and his wife, Marzetta, of Lenoir; James “Jimmy” Greer and his wife, Faye, of Boone; a special friend, Boyd Barnett of Boone; several nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 4 at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Boone. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family gather ed at the church at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Flowers were appreciated or memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, P.O. Box 4072 Pittsfield, Massachusetts 01202. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta served the Haas family.

Gary Lawrence Holman

Mr. Gary Lawrence Holman, age 52, of Todd, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at Watauga Medical Center in Boone.
A memorial service was held on Friday, February 3, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J.D. Walton and Eugene Calloway officiating the service.
Mr. Holman was born in Watauga County on Saturday, April 4, 1953 to the late Charles Holman and to Bertha Fulton Holman.
He is survived by his mother, Bertha Holman, of Todd; two brothers, Joe Holman of Glendale Springs and Jeff Holman, of Todd; a half-sister, Shirley Church, of Todd; five sisters, Loraine Tyrie, of Blowing Rock, Edith Dillard, of West Jefferson, Vickie Mullis, of Laurel Springs, Ann Canter, of Todd and Nancy Toliver, of Creston; several nieces and nephews also survive.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Watauga County Kidney Dialysis Center, c/o Georgia Potter, 337 Deerfield Road, Boone, NC 28607.

Rose Cox Kirby

June 25, 1927 - January 30, 2006
Mrs. Rose Cox Kirby, age 78 of Lansing, the Helton community, and the widow of Bryan Kirby Jr., passed away Monday, January 30, 2006 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 25, 1927 in Rugby, Virginia to the late Joe and Imogene Spencer Cox. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Anita Cheryl Kirby and her brother, Roald B. Cox.
She is survived by two sons, Roald Kirby and wife, Ellie, of Troutdale, Virginia and Russell Kirby of the home; one daughter, Helen Whited and husband, Larry, of Richlands, Virginia; four grandchildren, Bryan Carmody and fiancée, Rebecca Brooks, Patrick Carmody, Elizabeth and Rosy Kirby; a sister, Eleanor Cox of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Betty Kirby Morton of Winston Salem, N.C.; a host of cousins and dear friends.
Mrs. Kirby graduated from Marion Junior College and Lenoir Rhyne College. She did postgraduate study at Appalachian State. She was a retired teacher of French, English and history at the Konnarock Lutheran School and Mt. Rogers High School in Virginia, and at Lansing and Northwest Ashe High Schools in Ashe County, North Carolina.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Thursday, February 2, 2006 at the Helton United Methodist Church in Lansing. Mrs. Kirby laid in state from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. prior to the service. Rev. Tommy McClure and Rev. Peter Parish officiated. Burial followed in the Helton cemetery. The family received friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Wednesday, February 1 at the Helton United Methodist Church. Flowers were appreciated or memorials may be made to the Helton United Methodist Church, 15309 Hwy. 194 N., Lansing, NC 28643.

Mr. William Stewart Miller, age 88, of Fleetwood, died Thursday morning, February 2, 2006 at his residence.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 4, 2006 at 12:30 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tim Roten and Rev. Fred Houck officiating. Burial followed in the Bethany cemetery.
The family received friends from 11:30 - 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, one hour prior to the funeral service.
Mr. Miller was born in Watauga County on Saturday, September 29, 1917 to the late Eurastus Wayne Miller and the late Alberta Rose Blackburn Miller. He was an agricultural farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Clyde Baldwin Miller; a son, Steven Stewart Miller and wife, Bonnie, of Roxboro; two daughters, Sandra Jean Miller Cox and husband, Bill (Dick), of Clemmons and Renna Sue Miller Weaver and husband, Mark, of Warrensville; a sister, Vina Green, of Todd; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Christopher Scott Roark, age 25, died Thursday, February 4, 2006.
Funeral services were held on Monday, February 6, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Sechreast and Rev. Frank Rash officiating. Burial followed in the Roark cemetery.
The family received friends from 10 - 11 a.m. on Monday, one hour prior to the funeral service.
Scott was born on Thursday, July 17, 1980 to Jewel Elwood Roark and Retha Carolyn Elliott. He was a construction worker.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Key Roark; two daughters, Makayla Roark and Madison Roark, both of the home; his father, Elwood Roark, of Lenoir; his mother, Retha Elliott, of Statesville; Paternal grandmother, Dessie Roark, of Creston also survive.

Mrs. Marjorie Ann Calhoun Wiles, age 62, of Warrensville, died Thursday evening, February 2, 2006 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, February 5, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Shepherd officiating. Burial followed in the Calhoun cemetery. The family received friends from 1 - 2 p.m. on Sunday, one hour prior to the funeral service.
Mrs. Wiles was born in Westchester, Pa. on Saturday, February 20, 1943 to the late Virgil Buel Calhoun and the late Mary Jane Haga Calhoun. She worked as a CAN at Ashe Living Center in Jefferson.
She is survived by her husband, John C. Wiles, Jr., three sons, Kevin Calhoun, of West Jefferson, Keith Calhoun and John Wiles, both of Warrensville; two daughters, Kimberly Snyder, of Avondale, Pa. and Cathy Roland, of Warrensville; a step-daughter, Dianne Kellerman, of Costa Rica; five brothers, Don Calhoun, of Cochranville, Pa., Doug Calhoun, of Creston, Dave Calhoun, of Todd, Dennis Calhoun, of Warrensville and Dale Calhoun, of Jefferson; four sisters, Janet Dyck, of Germany, Fran Rush, of the Kennett Square, Pa., Betty Hughes, of Landenburg, Pa. and Dianne Primus, of Coatsville, Pa.; fifteen grandchildren; a great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Ruby Sawyer Arnold, age 77, of Piney Creek, died Tuesday morning, March 7, 2006 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 9, 2006 at 2 p.m. at New River Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Jones and Rev. Charles Arnold officiating. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery.
The family received friends 6 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2005 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mrs. Arnold was born in Crumpler, N.C. on Wednesday May 16, 1928 to the late George Sawyer and the late Myra Wiles Sawyer. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Sawyer and a sister, Thelma Caudill.
She is survived by her husband, R.C. Arnold, of the home; four sons, George Steven (Steve) Arnold and wife, Arlene, of Piney Creek, Phillip Eugene (Phil) Arnold and wife, Evelyn, of Piney Creek, Russell Charles (Charles) Arnold, Jr. and wife, Cindy, of Greensboro and Jonathan Gordon (Jon) Arnold and wife, Pam, of Wilkesboro; three brothers, John “Jay” Sawyer, of Fleetwood, Joe Sawyer, of West Jefferson and Dean Sawyer of Georgia; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Arlie Lee Blevins
Lansing
May 18, 1916 - March 7, 2006
Arlie Lee Blevins, age 89 of Lansing, N.C. died Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at his home. Mr. Blevins was born May 18, 1916 in Ashe County to the late Judson and Cora Barker Blevins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Harold Blevins; a sister, Zella Roten; a granddaughter, Kathy Hatwell; and two infant brothers.
Mr. Blevins was very involved in the community. He volunteered with the Blood Mobile for over 20 years. He served as a board member of the Sharing Center. He also volunteered with the Heart Association and helped with fundraisers for Cancer Research. He was owner of Blevins Store in Lansing for 38 years.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church. Rev. Billy Robinson and Rev. Dan Little officiated. Burial followed in the Scott-Blevins cemetery. The family received friends from 6 – 9 p.m., Wednesday, March 8 at Badger Funeral Home. Flowers were be appreciated or memorials may be made to: Hospice of Ashe, PO Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640.
Mr. Blevins is survived byhis wife, Vernie Blevins; son, J. E. Blevins of Lansing, N.C.; daughter, Beryl Zimmer of Greenville, Tenn.; brother, Hyte Blevins of Jefferson, N.C.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Edna Ham Carpenter

Edna Ham Carpenter, age 89, died Wednesday evening March 8, 2006, at the Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel, 2005 Mount Jefferson Road, West Jefferson, N.C. with the Rev. Larry Shepherd officiating. Interment followed in the Fairview-Carpenter cemetery in Lansing, N.C.
Mrs. Carpenter was born in Ashe County on July 11, 1916. She was the daughter of the late William Riley and Hattie Greer Ham and the widow of Hannie Vinton Carpenter.
She is survived by two sons, Donald Wayne Carpenter and wife, Helen, of Dover, Pa., Roger Carpenter and wife, Virginia, of Bel Aire, Md.; three daughters, Nellie Carpenter of the home, Mary Tucker and husband, Marvin, of East Bend, Willa Mae Wood and husband Jesse of Tobaccoville, N.C.; three half brothers, Charles Ham of Valdese, N.C., Fred Ham of California and Darrell Ham of West Jefferson, N.C.; two half-sisters Volorie Good and Aliene Edwards of West Jefferson, N.C.; six grandchildren, Jessie Wood, Jr., Steven Ray Tucker, Donald Wayne Carpenter, Karin Elizabeth Scott, Thomas Scott Carpenter and Terri Lynn Brinker; six great-grandchildren, Kyrstal Ray Butler, Shaun Curtis Hopkins, Melanie Rose Carpenter, Mackenzie Ray Tucker, Steven Austin Tucker and Aubrey Nizole Scott; several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Robert Warren Carpenter and three brothers, Dean Ham, Edgar Ham and Dale Ham.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Old Richmond Fire Department, Bayada Nursing and the many doctors, nurses and staff at Forsyth Medical Center for their kind deeds.
The family received friends from 1 - 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2006, one hour prior to the funeral service.

Delma M. Goodman, age 70, of Fleetwood, N.C., died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at her home. Mrs. Goodman was born in Ashe County, N.C. on August 3, 1935 to the late Charlie and Nealie Ashley Miller.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at 2 p.m. at South Beaver Baptist Church. Rev. Lawrence Goodman and Rev. Johnny Goodman officiated. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Goodman laid in state from 1 - 2 p.m. prior to the service. The family received friends at Mrs. Goodman’s home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to South Beaver Baptist Church, c/o David Ashley, P.O. Box 1560, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
Mrs. Goodman is survived by her husband, Kenneth Goodman; daughters, Carol Fairchild of West Jefferson, N.C. and Sherl Watson of Fleetwood, N.C.; sister, Geraldine Smith of Bel Air, Maryland; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
