Mrs. Hazel Miller Faw Patterson, age 83, of Millers Creek, widow of John Talmadge Patterson, died Saturday, April 7, 2007 at Britthaven Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday 2 p.m., April 10, 2007 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with the Rev. Mace Johnson officiating.
Burial will be in Missionary Baptist Church cemetery in Glendale Springs.
Mrs. Patterson was born October 10, 1923 in Ashe County to Gordon and Verna Wingler Miller.
She was a member of Glendale Baptist Church.
She was retired from Tyson Foods.
She is survived by: three daughters, Patty Spears of North Wilkesboro, Pamela Little and husband, Jim of Winston-Salem, Lisa Johnson and husband, Greg of Millers Creek; two sons, Richard Faw and wife, Shirley of Yadkinville, Ralph Faw and wife, Ellen of Statesville; four sisters, Gladys Barnes of West Jefferson, Nellie Dixon of Laurel Springs, Myrtle Stanley of Hays, Recie Roten of North Wilkesboro; five brothers, Arvil Miller of Virginia, Russell Miller, Donald Miller, Herman Miller all of Ashe County, Bronard Miller of Laurel Springs; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family received friends at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Monday night from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Florence Young Thomas

Mrs. Florence Young Thomas, age 98 of Grassy Creek, N.C. died Friday, March 30, 2007 at the Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson, N.C.
Mrs. Thomas was born near Lansing, N.C., February 7, 1909 to Lee and Matilda Baugess Young.
She was a homemaker and a well known artist, having studied art in several states and attending school in Philadelphia School of Fine Arts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Thomas.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Helton United Methodist Church, Lansing N.C. with Rev. Peter Parish and Rev. Jim Thompson officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday evening at the Helton United Methodist Church.
The family sincerely requests no flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ashe County Arts Council c/o Jane Lonon, P.O. Box 353, Jefferson, N.C. 28640
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and William Plummer of Grassy Creek, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.
Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence Va. is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Ambrose Andrew Gentry, Sr.

Mr. Ambrose Andrew Gentry, Sr., age 92, of Todd, died Thursday morning, June 14, 2007 at Watauga Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 16, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Baldwin Community Church with Rev. Douglas Hardin and Rev. Fred Allen Houck officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethany cemetery.
The family received friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2007 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Gentry was born in Ashe County on Sunday, October 18, 1914 to the late Charles W. Gentry and Minnie Wilcox Gentry.
He worked as a Carpenter.
He was a member of the Baldwin Community Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Joines Gentry; a son, Stephen James Gentry and a granddaughter, Shannon Knox.
He is survived by three sons, Andrew Gentry, Jr. and wife, Gail, of Todd, William Gentry and wife, Carolyn, of Bervard, NC and Joe Gentry and wife, Gina, of Kernersville, NC; five daughters, Carol Sharpe and husband Dennis, of West Jefferson, Betty Gentry Lewis, of Roanoke, VA, Helen Davis, of Greensboro, Margaret Howell, of Bervard, NC and Sherley Vannoy and husband, Max, of Pfafftown, NC; a sister, Virginia Lemly, of Bel Air, Maryland; twenty-one grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Flowers are appreciated.
Pallbearers are as followed: Shawn Gentry, Chris Davis, Kevin Howell, Adam Vannoy, Wesley Gentry, Derek Gentry, Jake Gentry and Shade Gentry.

Mrs. Alice Hamer Huckman, age 87, of Jefferson, formerly of Marathon, Florida Keys, died Saturday, June 16, 2007 at Segraves Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 18, 2007 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve LeaShomb officiating.
The family received friends from 7:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, one hour prior to the funeral service.
She was born in Jersey City, NJ on September 21,1919 and lived in Wilmington, DE, where she raised her four children.
Upon retiring to the Bahamas on her yacht she enjoyed boating, fishing and her artwork.
She was preceded in death by her late husband Boe Huckman and her only son William J. Corrigan, Jr.
She is survived by three daughters, Ann Marie Smith and husband, Joe, of West Jefferson, Patricia E. Shrewsbury, of Newark, DE and Alice B. Corrigan, of Newark, DE; a daughter-in-law, Arlene Corrigan; a sister, Annabelle Witt, of New
Castle, DE; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; nephews and favorite niece, Pam Rowe, of Virginia Beach.
Mrs. Huckman was very talented with all her seascape paintings and her love of flowers and gardening.
She could make anything bloom.
She was active in scouting, her church and the Yacht Club in Marathon, FL.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: Midway Baptist Church, 1670 Mt. Jefferson Road, West Jefferson, NC 28694 or Gideon’s International, PO Box 993, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
The family would like to thank all the caregivers at Segraves Care Center for their love and attention they gave her.

Eula Mabel Bare Phillips

Mrs. Eula Mabel Bare Phillips, age 92, of Fleetwood, died Thursday, June 21, 2007 at her daughter’s home.
Mrs. Phillips was born September 13, 1914 in Ashe County to the late Hiram and Murtie Ann Bare.
In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Greely Vernon Phillips; one son: Gary Thomas Phillips; six brothers: Lawson, Glen, Paul, Walker, Wilson and Kilby Bare; three sisters: Ruth, Attie May and Brucie Faye Bare.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 24, 2007 at 3 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Mark Harless.
Burial followed in the Olds Field Baptist Church cemetery.
The family received friends from 1:30 – 3:00 prior to the service.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by: Three sons: Max Phillips and wife Lillie of Winston-Salem, NC, Greg Phillips and wife Dana of Fleetwood, NC, and David Phillips of Homestead, FL. One daughter: Pansy Jean Miller and husband Clyde of Deep Gap, NC.
One brother: Burrell Bare and wife Helen of Jefferson, NC.
Nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Irene Edna Mahala Price

Mrs. Irene Edna Mahala Price, age 89, of Creston, died Monday, June 18, 2007 at Margate Health and Rehab Center.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wayne Roark officiating.
Burial will follow in the Price cemetery in Creston.
The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, two hours prior to the funeral service.
Mrs. Price was born in Ashe County on November 19, 1917 to the late Robert Mahala and Effie Mahala.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by a daughter, Josie Barker and husband, Howard, of Jefferson; three sons, Gene Price and wife, Wanda, of Lansing, Billy Price and Bobby Price, both
of Creston; special friends, Jim and Ruth Mahala; ten grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; four great, great grandchildren; a step granddaughter; five step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Wanda Elizabeth King Thompson, age 77 of Jefferson, NC died Sunday, June 17, 2007 at her home. Mrs. Thompson was born August 16, 1929 in Mitchell County to the late David Earl and Hazel Farmer King. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Roscoe Thompson.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at the West Jefferson First Baptist Church by Rev. Dr. Calvin Miller and Martin Woodruff.
Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 19th at Badger Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by: One son: David Thompson and wife Anna of Lansing, NC. Two brothers: Jimie King and wife Pat and Guy King and wife Jean, all of Spruce Pine. Two grandchildren: Will and Katie Orr. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Mary Austin Allen, age 81, of Jefferson, died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
A graveside service was held on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery with Rev. Dr. Keith Franklin officiating.
Mrs. Allen was born in Ashe County on Saturday, April 17, 1926 to the late Robert G. and Ola Green Austin.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Jefferson United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvia Allen.
She is survived by her husband, Wiley Bronard Allen, of the home; a son, Robert Allen and wife, Kathy, of Mt. Airy, NC; a sister, Alice Lee Lafferty, of Jefferson; two grandsons, Wes Allen of Ovido, Florida and Will Allen and wife, Jennifer, of Pilot Mountain, NC; 2 great-grandsons, Laton Allen and Levi Banks, all of Pilot Mountain, NC; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Herman George “Sam” Bauguess

Mr. Herman George “Sam” Bauguess, age 81, of Creston, died Saturday, June 30, 2007 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church with Rev. Denton Hart and Rev. Eddie Lewis officiating.
Burial followed in the Flatwoods cemetery.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 2, 2007 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Bauguess was born in Ashe County on Saturday, April 24, 1926 to the late Marion Bauguess and Stella Coldiron Bauguess.
He worked in maintenance at Burlington Industries.
He was also preceded in death by twin sons, Jerry and Gerald Bauguess; three grandchildren, Angelica Grubbs, Teresa Beth Bauguess and an infant grandchild and a brother, Freeman Bauguess.
He is survived by his wife, Della Denny Bauguess, of the home; three sons, George Bauguess and wife, Sandra, of Oxford, PA, Johnny Bauguess and wife, Dianne, of Mountain City, TN and Rick Bauguess and wife, Dorothy, of Creston, the Pond Mountain Community; three daughters, Judy Greer, of Lansing, Juanita Jones and husband, Harold, of Creston, the Pond Mountain Community and Dorothy Grubbs and husband, John, of Granite Falls, NC; a step brother, Junior Roland and wife Doris, of Sunset, MD; twenty-one grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Hettie B. Brooks of Jefferson died Thursday, July 5, 2007 at Segraves Care Center in Jefferson.
Mrs. Brooks was born March 6, 1911 in Ashe County, NC to Curtis and Hettie Shatley Blevins.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Tom Brooks.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 7, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson with Rev. Joe Riley Blevins officiating.
Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends from 10:30- 11 a.m. Saturday prior to the service at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
Flowers were accepted or memorials may be made to Ashe Services for the Aging, PO Box 9, West Jefferson, NC 28694 or Segraves Nursing Care Center Activities Fund, 200 Hospital Ave., Jefferson, NC 28640.
Mrs. Brooks is survived by four nieces and one nephew.

Blanche Owen Francis

Mrs. Blanche Owen Francis, age 92, of Crumpler, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Margate Health & Rehab Center in Jefferson.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Elder John Jackson officiating.
Burial followed in the Healing Springs Baptist Church cemetery.
The family received friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, one hour prior to the funeral service.
Mrs. Francis was born in Rugby, Virginia on Sunday, May 2, 1915 to the late Arthur Greene Owen and Nancy Osborne Owen. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert B. Francis; a daughter, Shirley Lambert; two brothers, Cody Owen and Raymond Owen; four sisters, Alma White, Margaret Jones, Sybil Kilby and Hazel Osborne.
She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Cornett and Faye Fluty, both of Virginia; a grandson, Michael Lambert and wife, Jeannie, of West Jefferson; two granddaughters, Meredith Lambert and Gabrielle Lambert, both of West Jefferson; a son-in-law, David Lambert; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Russell D. Hamilton
Glendale Springs, N.C.

Russell D. Hamilton of Glendale Springs, NC passed away June 29, 2007.
Born in 1914, the son of Swedish immigrant parents, he and his sister Eileen grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Russ attended the University of Minnesota where he explored photography while majoring in engineering.
He married Helen Stanway in September of 1937 and they enjoyed 67 wonderful years together.
They both enjoyed traveling, visiting exciting destinations around the world. Russ’ favorite vacation was visiting the state of Hawaii.
They cherished their family of two children, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Russ worked for Kodak in Minneapolis and then continued his career as an electrical engineer with Western Electric until his retirement, moving to Glendale Springs in 1967.
He was a member of Jefferson United Methodist Church, a member of the Blue Ridge University study-group, was an active amateur radio operator for over 70 years with friends world-wide.
An award winning and published photographer, he had an enthusiasm for the unknown sharing his curiosity and creativity.
He was instrumental in completing the Ashe County cemetery project published in the 1990’s and had a passion for the family’s genealogy.
Russ was actively involved in the mountain community and deeply loved the home he designed in Glendale Springs.
“In our hearts you hold a place that no one else could ever fill…”
Internment services will be held at Holy Trinity Church of the Fresco at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Ashe County Public Library.

William Glenn Miller

Mr. William Glenn Miller, Jr., age 91, of Warrensville, died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at his residence.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Elder John Jackson officiating.
Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 2, 2007 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Miller was born in Ashe County on Friday, September 10, 1915 to the late David and Bessie Miller.
He graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College and taught at Lansing School.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II. In 1951, Mr. Miller began his own business, Miller Insurance Agency.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Avis Miller and a son, William “Billy” Glenn Miller, Jr.
He is survived by three sons, David Miller and wife, Joy, of Jefferson, Kendall Miller and wife, Robin, of Greenville, SC and Christopher Miller and wife, Elizabeth, of Jefferson; three daughters, Jane Shedd and husband, Steve, of Dallas, TX, Karen Miller, of Warrensville and Barbara Thomas and husband, David, of Fleetwood; a sister, Verona Witherspoon and husband, Lloyd, of Jefferson; a special caretaker, Ginny Tedder; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family requests no food please!
