Beryl Hart

Mrs. Beryl Stansberry Hart, age 99 of West Jefferson, NC died Thursday, September 20, 2007 at Margate Health & Rehab. Center. Mrs. Hart was born December 10, 1907 in Ashe County to the late Jacob and Lettie Brooks Stansberry. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers: Everette, Ralph and Langdon Ray 'Tooney Stansberry and sister, Retha Edmondson.

Mrs. Hart may be best known in Ashe County for her years of service as assistant to her father, J. D. Stansberry in the offices of Clerk of Superior Court and later in the Register of Deeds office.

Funeral services were held at 4:00 PM, September 23, 2007 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. David Blackburn. Burial was in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 3:00 - 4:00 PM at Badger Funeral Home.

Cynthia Simpkins

Cynthia Marie Simpkins, age 47 of West Jefferson, NC, died Wednesday, September, 19, 2007. Ms. Simpkins was born October 24, 1959 in Wilmington, DE to Charles and Clara Testerman Simpkins. She was preceded in death by her mother.

Ms. Simpkins is survived by:

Daughter: Staci Miller of West Jefferson, NC

Father: Charles Simpkins of Crumpler, NC

Three Brothers: Charles D. Simpkins of Deep Gap, NC, Larry and Carl Simpkins both of DE

Two Sisters: Brenda Soules of Sparta, Nc and Regina Trivette of Todd, NC

1 granddaughter, several, aunts, uncles and cousins

Fredda Davis

Mrs. Fredda Pennington Davis, age 95 of Jefferson, NC died Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at Margate Health & Rehab. Center. Mrs. Davis was born March 4, 1912 in Ashe County to Oscar and Mamie Carson Pennington. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband; Joseph Walter Davis and brother; Earl Pennington.
Mrs. Davis was a member of the Nathans Creek United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and past treasurer. Fredda was a very loving and caring person. She enjoyed quilting and she made quilts for each of her children and most of her grandchildren. She was a talented artist and loved walking and being around people.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, September 21, 2007 at the Nathans Creek United Methodist Church by Rev. Rob Brooks, Rev. Darrell Giles and Rev. Todd Brewer. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 AM prior to the service.

Mrs. Davis is survived by:

1 daughter: Joann Furman of Fayetteville, PA

2 sons: Thomas Wilson Davis of Orlando, FL & Harold Davis of Jefferson

4 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren & several nieces and nephews also survive.

Joann Miller

Mrs. Joann Howell Miller, age 61 of West Jefferson, NC died Monday, September 17, 2007 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Miller was born July 29, 1946 in Ashe County to the late Wert and Grace Partick Howell. She was a member of South Beaver Baptist Church and attended Bethel Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, September 21, 2007 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Mark Harless and Rev. Johnny Goodman. Burial will follow in the Patrick cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 - 9:00 PM Thursday, Sept. 20th at Badger Funeral Home.

4 grandchildren: Rachel & Kimberly Dillard and Austin & Abby Miller, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Billy Mullis

Mr. Billy Gene Mullis age 54 of Valdese, NC died Monday at his home. Mr. Mullis was born in Ashe County to Clarence and Stella Mae Reeves Mullis. He was preceded in death by his father and step-son, Jonathan Bell IV.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Glen Woodie and Rev. Gene Roten. Burial will follow in the Haw Orchard cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Wednesday, Sept. 19th at Badger Funeral Home.

Maggie Roten

Mrs. Maggie Osborne Roten, age 78 of Creston, NC died Monday, September 17, 2007 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Roten was born March 17, 1929 in Ashe County to the late George and Rhoda Roten Osborne. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband; Albert Roten, son; Robert Roten and infant daughter; Judy Roten. She was a member of the Big Laurel Church of Christ in Christian Union. She enjoyed gardening and walking.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the Big Laurel Church of Christ in Christian Union by Rev. Darrell Graybeal. Burial will follow in the Roten cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 PM prior to the service.

Clara Dell McClure DeBoard, age 100 of Las Vegas, NV formerly of Ashe, died Friday, September 7, 2007 at her home. Mrs. DeBoard was born February 2, 1907 in Ashe County to the late Vince and Berta Mayberry McClure.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 17, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Badger Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tommy McClure officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 AM Monday prior to the service.

Mrs. DeBoard is survived by:

Two daughters: Sue Ward of Las Vegas and Betty Chrisco of CA

One brother: Worth McClure of PA

One sister: Ruth Farmer of VA

David Blevins

Mr. David Ralph Blevins, age 78 of Valdese, NC formerly of Ashe died Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at his home. Mr. Blevins was born April 14, 1929 in Rock, WV to the late Oscar and Maggie Blevins. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife: Mary Lee Blevins, sister: Leslie Blevins and, brothers: Lester, Lacy, Reeves, Ernie, Lovie, Harvey and Vernon Blevins. Mr. Blevins attended Trinity Baptist Church. He was a loving father and grandfather.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2007 at 2:00pm at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Scott Moneyham, Rev. Fred Richardson and Minister Danny Mille will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Brooks cemetery in Lansing.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday, Sept. 14th at Badger Funeral Home.

Edna Irene Scott

Edna Irene Scott, age 83 of Hampton, VA, formerly of Ashe County, NC died Sunday, September 2, 2007 at the Sentara Careplex Hospital. Miss Scott was born September 22, 1923 in Ashe County to the late Grady and Fern Davis Scott. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by a sister; Jenny Scott, brothers; Dennis and Joe Scott and nephew; Chris Scott. Miss Scott was a member of Zion United Methodist Church. She was also an associate member of the First United Methodist Church in Hampton, VA. She was lovingly devoted to her family and friends and was always willing to help everyone in any way possible. She was a retired NASA engineer.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 8, 2007 at the Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Brenda Brashear officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Miss Scott will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Franklin Delano Bare

Mr. Franklin D. Bare better known as Frank age 72 of West Jefferson died Sunday, September 2, 2007 at Watauga Medical Center in Boone.

Mr. Bare was born on October 9, 1934 to the late Wilson and Annie Ruth Miller Bare. He worked all his life as a farmer. Including his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Wade Hampton Bare.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2:00pm at Riverview Primitive Baptist Church with Elder James McNeill officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Tuesday at Badger Funeral Home.

Mr. Bare is survived by:
2 nephews: Eric Bare of West Jefferson and Shane Bare of Wilkesboro.

Ruthie Hopkins

Mrs. Ruthie Jane Lyalls Hopkins age 79 of West Jefferson died Tuesday, Augusr 21, 2007 at NC Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Hopkins was born April 8, 1928 in Ashe Coiunty to the late Jessie and Mary Wayne Lyalls. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Oron Hopkins, a son, Ricky Hopkins, a brother, Willard Lyalls and two sisters, Nancy Lyalls and Sally Russell. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at 2:00 PM at Mount Olive Baptist Church cemetery with Rev. Roger Blevins officiating. Mrs. Hopkins is survived by: 2 sons: Johnny Hopkins of the home and Bobby Hopkins of West Jefferson 1 daughter: Joyce Houck of West Jefferson 2 step-sons: Roy Hopkins of Crumpler and Kermit Hopkins of Fleetwood 1 step-daughter: Nena Bare of Millers Creek 2 sisters: Flora Fox of Taylorsville and Johnsie Lyalls of Wilkesboro 6 step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive. Kenneth Ellis Davis

Mr. Kenneth Ellis Davis age 81 of Millers Creek died Sunday, August 19, 2007 at Margate Health and Rehab center. Mr. Davis was born October 8, 1925 in Vermont to the late Kenneth W. and Marion Monroe Davis.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 2:00 PM at Badger Funeral Home Chapel in West Jefferson with Rev. Lyn Lambert officiating.

Mr. Lee May, age 61 of Galax, VA, formerly of Ashe County died Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at Twin County Hospital in Galax. Mr. May was born September 1, 1945 in Ashe County to the late Paul and Ossie Carpenter May. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters; Grace Baldwin, Ruby Eller and Martha Eller.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 - 12:00 Thursday, August 23, 2007 at Badger Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at the May cemetery following the visitation.
