Susie M. Crudup

HENDERSON — Susie Mae Crudup, 68, of 1000 Foster Road, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at her residence. She was a Vance County native, the daughter of the late James Amos Hargrove and Pattie Reid Hargrove and the widow of the late John Henry Crudup.
She attended Nutbush School.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Kittrell by the Rev. Roy Fleming. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her children, James Henry Crudup and Charlie Lee Crudup of the home, Rev. Andrew Crudup of Concord, John Henry Crudup Jr. of Louisburg, Pattie Green, Della Perry and Annette Crudup, all of Henderson; two sisters, Betty Ann Young of Henderson and Gertrude Hargrove of New York; two brothers, Samuel Hargrove and David Hargrove, both of Henderson; 31 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Garnes Funeral Chapel and all other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be June Alston, James Perry, Alex Obery, George Kersey, LeAndres Perry, Curtis Williams, John Johnson and Zeldan Macon. Floralbearers will be nieces, friends and family.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Ruby D. Smith

HENDERSON — Ruby Dennis Smith, 74, of LaSalle Health Care Center in Durham, formerly of 105 Plantation Drive, Kittrell, died Wednesday, August 2, 2000, in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Born in Missouri, she was the widow of Jesse Wray Smith, of Vance County, who died March 10, 2000. She was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be held Friday, at 2:00 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are two grandchildren, Karen O. Fleming, and fiance, Charles Edward Stokes, of Creedmoor, and Claude D. O’Hagan, and wife, Lisa, of Henderson; and three great-grandchildren, Tabitha Phillips, Brittany Tanner, and Heather O’Hagan.
The family will receive friends Thursday, from 7:30 to 9:00, at Flowers Funeral Home.

Irma F. Ellington

HENDERSON-Irma Frazier Ellington, age 85, a resident of 4307 Dabney Road, died Tuesday night in a local nursing home. She was a native of Granville County and was the daughter of the late Luther and Katherine "Kate" Cottrell Frazier and the widow of Batt M. Ellington.
She was a homemaker and member of the West End Baptist Church where funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 P. M. by Dr. Richard A. Walker. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by two daughters, June E. Daniel of Oxford and Katherine E. Russell of Windsor; one son, Stewart M. Ellington of Lugoff, S. C.; eight grandchildren, Sandra D. Yancey, Dennis W. Daniel, Kevin A. Daniel, Todd E. Daniel, Jennifer E. Kearney, Michael S. Ellington, Janine M. Russell, and Francis B. Russell, Jr.; two great grandchildren, Denise Daniel and Elaine Kearney. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Cornelia Sharon Ellington.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7:00 until 8:30 P. M. at the J. M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at her home at 4307 Dabney Road.
Serving as pall bearers will be: Dennis W. Daniel, Kevin A. Daniel, Todd E. Daniel, Michael S. Ellington, Francis B. Russell, Jr., Dale Yancey and Wayne T. Kearney, Jr.
Arrangements are by the J. M. White Funeral Home.

Mattie B. Brown

HENDERSON — Mattie Bell Brown, 65, of the Guardian Care Nursing Facility, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late James and Mattie Jones Brown.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at Mitchell Baptist Church by the Rev. Daniel Lilly Jr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three sons, Robert C. Brown, Charles H. Brown, Fred J. Brown, all of Henderson; three daughters, Clara L. Brown, Mattie T. Brown and Pattie B. Williams, all of Henderson; one brother, Charlie T. Brown of Henderson; one sister, Mary B. Alston of Henderson; 21 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at 741 Southerland St.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Floralbearers will be nieces.

George E. Howard

HENDERSON — George Ezra Howard, 72, of 413 S. College St., died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at his residence. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Elijah and Mary Kittrell Howard.
He retired from Roses Warehouse after more than 30 years and then worked several years at the Louisiana-Pacific Company.
He was member of Red Bud Baptist Church where he was a usher, a member of the trustee board, parking committee and caretaker of the grounds.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Red Bud Baptist Church by the Rev. John E. Hall. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three sisters, Carrie Lee Daye, Annie Mae Hawkins, both of Henderson, Ellen Jones of Philadelphia, Pa.; and one brother, Willie Howard of Cleveland, Ohio.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service, and other times at the residence of Carrie Lee Daye, 518 Flint St.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Inez D. Parham

OXFORD — Inez Dean Parham, 84, of 6029 Bob Daniel Road, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, in Oxford Manor. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late William and Mary Wood Dean.
She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and a Sunday school teacher for over 40 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith F. Williams. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, William Garland Parham Jr. of Raleigh and Ronald Dean Parham of Henderson; one sister, Julia Dean Bell of Oxford; and three grandchildren.
Contributions may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1171 Hwy. 158-W, Oxford, NC 27565.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Fannie M. Terryl

HENDERSON — Fannie Mae Terryl, 90, of 410 East Winder St., died Tuesday, August 1, 2000, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the late Payton and Alice Kittrell Downey.
She attended Henderson Institute and later moved to New York where she lived for 53 years before returning to Henderson. While in New York, she owned and operated a Children’s Clothing Store. She was a member of Mother A.M.E. Zion Church in New York.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service by the Rev. Evelyn Couch. Burial will follow in the Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are two sisters, Novella Washington and Helen Jones, both of the home.
The body will be on view at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Ida Chavis

WARRENTON — Ida Chavis, 86, of Warren Hills Nursing Center, formerly of Manson, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000.
Arrangements will be announced later by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Mae M. Varker

HENDERSON — Alva Mae McGhee Varker, 95, a former resident of the Courtyard Apartments, died Friday morning in a local nursing home. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late William Henry and Molly Woodlief McGhee.
She retired from Harriett & Henderson Yarns Inc., where she worked for 52 years.
She was a member of the White Memorial United Methodist Church, where funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Ben Sims. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by one son, James William Varker, of Chesapeake, Va.; one sister, Mildred M. Knapp of Yardiville, New Jersey; one brother, Willie R. McGhee of Lynn, Mass.; and one granddaughter.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Florence W. Wortham at 1010 Carroll Road.
Serving as active pall bearers will be James Wheeler, Jr., Ronnie Grissom, Jimmy Grissom, J. C. Watson, Craig Oakes, Earl McFall, and Murel McFall.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the White Memorial United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Phyllis Grissom, 1008 Shirley Drive, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Winderl M. Braswell

OXFORD — Winderl McCoy Braswell, 39, of 4013 Cannady’s Mill Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at Granville Medical Center.
He attended Granville County public schools. For many years he was a self-employed truck driver. He was a member of Pettiford Grove Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pettiford Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Waddell Tapp. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his parents, Wenford Braswell and Lois Burwell Braswell of the home.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.

Charles E. Henderson

HENDERSON — Charles Edward Henderson, 46, of 557 Spring St., died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at his residence. Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Worth M. Aiken

CREEDMOOR — Worth Manard Aiken, 74, of 15033 Creedmoor Road, Wake Forest, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at his home. He was a Wake County native and the son of the late Melvin and Lizzie Keith Aiken.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the 9th Medical Battalion of the 3rd Army in France and Germany. He won the EAME service medal, good conduct medal and World War II victory medal. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Dan Hill. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Jones Aiken of the home; a daughter, Linda Dale A. May of Rougemont; two grandsons; five sisters, Annie Bell Clark and Betty Norwood, both of Wake Forest, Goldie Collins and Patty Neal, both of Durham, Mary Nell Whitman of Greencastle, Ind.; and one brother, James Aiken of Durham.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary’s St., Raleigh, N.C. 27605. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and at other times at the home.

MANSON — Ida Moss Chavis, 86, of Warren Hills Nursing Center, formerly of Manson, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Manson Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. A.A. Brown will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Johnnie Chavis of the home; three daughters, Julia Smith of Richmond, Va., Betty Moss and Baheeran Salaam, both of New Jersey; one sister, Helen Moss of Manson; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

WARRENTON — Keith Antonio Fitts, 28, of the Hecks Grove community, Warrenton, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, after injuries in an automobile accident.

Charles D. Ashworth

OXFORD — Charles David Ashworth, 84, a resident of 206 Holly Drive, died Monday, Aug. 7, at his home.
A native of Transylvania Co., the son of the late Charles D. and Olivia Hancock Ashworth. A member and former deacon of Oxford Baptist Church, a Navy veteran of WWII, helped organize outside Fire Protection Association in Oxford, charter member, past president, and recipient of Melvin Jones Award of the Oxford Lions Club. He was retired as dairy field supervisor with Pine State Creamery.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Oxford Baptist Church by Dr. Steve Bolton. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Laura Norwood Ashworth of the home; two daughters, Gail A. Warren and husband James Michael of Oxford, Brenda A. Gardziel of Woodbridge, Va.; grandchildren, Kathy W. Tucker and husband Stephen of Robersonville, Ashley W. Harrell and husband Lee of Oxford, Kimberly Gardziel and David Gardziel, both of Woodbridge, Va.; great grandchildren, Bailey and Olivia Harrell; a brother, Harry Ashworth of Brevard. A brother, Chan Ashworth and a sister Eleanor Ashworth preceded him in death.
Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to Building Fund, Oxford Baptist Church, P.O. Box 398, Oxford, N.C. 27565. Visitation 7-8:30 Tuesday evening at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home.

William G. Baskerville

MANSON — William G. Baskerville, 78, of 358 White Farm Lane, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was the son of the late Alice Baskerville.
He was a veteran of the US Army.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Ashley Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Wilson Battle.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sisters, Corrine B. Hawkins of Manson and Lucinda Baskerville of Henderson.
Pallbearers will be Michael Pettaway, Robert Chase Sr., Howard Sommerville, William Pettaway, Robert Chase Jr. and Thaxton Jefferson.
The family will receive friends at the home of Corrine B. Hawkins, 358 White Farm Lane, Manson.

Elsie H. Edward

Elsie Hight Edwards, 88, died Friday, August 4, 2000, in Louisburg Nursing Center. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Liberty-Vance United Church of Christ conducted by the Rev. Tammy Ayscue and the Rev. John Yevak. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Edwards was a member of the Eastern Star and The United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Lou Gordon of Clayton; a step-daughter, Shirley Matthews of Henderson; sons, N.J. Ayscue and Cooper Ayscue, both of Louisburg; a step-son, Bill Edwards and wife Ginger of Rural Retreat, Va.; eight grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren.
The family received friends Saturday at Lancaster Funeral Home and at all other times at the home of Cooper Ayscue, 21 Stone’s Way, Louisburg, N.C. 27549.
