Jimmy W. Marcinowski
CREEDMOOR -- Jimmy Wayne Marcinowski, 47, of 1528 Olive Circle, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, in an automobile accident. He was a Cumberland County native and the son of Bertha Harmon Marcinowski and the late Frank Marcinowski Sr. He was an employee of Georgia-Pacific Corporation.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by Pastor Marc Jackson and Dr. Gary Galeotti.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are two daughters, Heather Marcinowski of Wilmington and Erin Marcinowski of Hillsborough; two sons, Shawn Marcinowski and Jason Marcinowski, both of Durham; two brothers, First Sgt. Bobby Harmon of Creedmoor and Frank Marcinowski III of Durham; and one granddaughter.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be given to one’s favorite charity.
Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at 1199 East Middleton Drive, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.

Daisy Roberson Short
HENDERSON -- Daisy Roberson Short, age 89, a former resident of 542 Sagefield Dr. Henderson died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000 in a local nursing home. She was a native of Vance Co. and was the daughter of the late Eugene and Lena Clark Roberson. She was the widow of William Albert Short and was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Aubrey Florence. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Clara S. Pillow of Richmond Va., Juanita S. Dickerson and Jean S. Roberts both of Henderson, three sons: Horace Short and Phillip Short both of Henderson and William Nelson Short of Oxford, fourteen grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son George Norman Short.
The family will receive friends Monday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral home. At other times they will be at the home of Tom and Juanita Dickerson 3812 Old County Home Road.
Robert L. Briggs
HENDERSON -- Robert Lee “Bobby” Briggs, 76, of 2800 U.S. 1-158 Hwy N., Henderson, died Sunday, December 17, 2000 at Maria Parham Hospital.
A native of Vance County, he was the son of the late James and Beulah Edwards Briggs.
Mr. Briggs was a retired employee of Rose Oil Company and McCracken Oil Company, and was a U.S. Marine Veteran of World War II. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class, and was a former Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Church Treasurer.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m., at Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Gene Wood, Dr. Russell Bell, and Dr. Melvin Vaughn. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Harris “Rena” Briggs; a daughter, Cathy B. Finch, and husband, Robert, of Henderson; a son, James Robert “Butch” Briggs, and wife, Patsy, of Henderson; four sisters, Virginia B. Bradsher, Joyce B. Weathers, and husband, Ellis, and Edna B. Henley, and husband, Robert, all of Henderson, and Roberta B. White, and husband, George, of Emporia, Virginia; two brothers, Clarence G. Briggs, and wife, Clara, of Wake Forest, N.C., and Freddie Briggs, and wife, Faye Ruth, of Youngsville, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Krista Briggs and Robbie Briggs, and wife, Lisa. He was preceded in death by a sister, Hortense Briggs, and three brothers, Utah “Pokey” Briggs, Ronald “Pete” Briggs, and Melvin Briggs.
The family will receive friends tonight, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Ray Branch, Willie Adcock, Sr., Billy Overton, Calvin Adcock, Gary Pulley, Rick Etheridge, Danny Thomas, and C.T. Overton.

James E. Bumpass
OXFORD -- James E. Bumpass, 77, of 8192 Charlie Stovall Road, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at the Oxford Manor Nursing Center.
He was a Granville County native and was a member of the St. Matthew Baptist Church.
Surviving are one sister, Gearlene Harris of Oxford; three brothers, James Ray Bumpass, Roy Haywood Bumpass and John Thomas Bumpass.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday at the St. Matthew Baptist Church by the Revs. Jimmie L. Johnson and Ida Black. Burial was in the church cemetery.
The family received visitors on Saturday at the Betts & Son Funeral Home Inc.
Eugene Cates
OXFORD -- Eugene Cates, 83, of 581 Hwy. #158, Rougemont, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Granville Medical Center. He was a Person County native and the son of the late Hunter E. and Ella Latta Cates.
He was a member and deacon of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, sung in the church choir and was a retired farmer.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Maude Hicks Cates of the home; three daughters, Patricia C. Davis and Sandra C. Whitlow, both of Oxford, and Linda C. Piper of Mebane; two sons, Dales Cates and Ronald Cates, both of Oxford; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

Robert R. Currin
HENDERSON -- Robert Randolph “DOC” Currin, 76, of 1413 Quail Run Road Box 26, Henderson, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, in Durham Regional Hospital in Durham. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Robert L. and Lois Hobgood Currin.
He was a member of Hester Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Lewis Wall. Burial will follow in Hester Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Hall Currin of the home; three sons, Ronald R. Currin, Reginald H. Currin, and Tommy M. Currin, all of Durham; and five grandchildren.

Ruby D. Dean
OXFORD -- Ruby Deale Dean, 89, of 4562 Hwy. 96, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at her home. She was a native of Beaufort County, Va., daughter of the late John F. and Frances Wilson Deale, and widow of Oscar W. Dean Sr.
She held a lifetime career as a registered nurse.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Cam Ford. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Oscar W. Dean Jr. of Oxford; one grandson; one brother, Rupert Deale of Tavares, Fla.; and one sister, Mittie Belle Garrett of Henderson.

VANCE COUNTY -- Irene Terry Eaton, 83, a Vance County native, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, in Newport New, Va.

Irma B. Elliott
OXFORD -- Irma Burns Elliott, 79, of Brantwood Nursing Center, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Granville Medical Center. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and the daughter of the late Milton and Alice Hayes Burnes. She was the widow of John Roy Elliott.
She was a member of Mt. Creek Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Mt. Creek Baptist Church cemetery by Dr. Delos Miles.
Surviving are two daughters, Shirley E. Phillips of Henderson and Norma E. Wall of Oxford; one son, Larry J. Elliott of Charlotte; three sisters, Lucille B. Denny of Durham, Edna Mae B. Arrington of Aberdeen and Betty B. Newton of High Point; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at 1779 Mt. Creek Road, Oxford.

Lillie C. Faulkner
HENDERSON -- Lillie Catlett Faulkner, age 74, a former resident of 1244 Oakridge Avenue, died Monday at Maria Parham Hospital.
She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Joe and Anna Robertson Catlett, and was the widow of Durwood Willard Faulkner.
She was a member of the North Henderson Baptist Church where funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. John Hines Adams, Sr. and the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by two daughters, Sylvia F. Spain and Dianne F. Hilliard both of Henderson; one sister, Mary C. Alford of Kittrell; three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. t the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Jimmy and Sylvia Spain, at 109 Willow Oak Place.

Elsie M. Harris
HENDERSON -- Elsie Mustian Harris, 87, formerly of 1411 Oxford Road, Henderson, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Community Memorial Health Center in South Hill, Va. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late John George and Maggie Hester Mustian.
She was retired from J.C. Penney, Co., where she was employed for 33 years as a sales clerk. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rose Chapel of First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Charles Cook and Shawn Griffith. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Judy H. Cleaton of South Hill, Va.; a son, Mike Harris of Palm Springs, Calif.; a sister, Helen Faulkner of Morehead City; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, immediately following the service, at the home on 1411 Oxford Road. All other times, they will be at the home of Judy Cleaton, 6179 Goode’s Ferry Road, South Hill, Va.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Michael Harris, Jackie Thompson, Timmy Kallam, Jim Faulkner, William Thompson and Christopher Neal.

HENDERSON -- James Ernest Jenkins, 80, of Guardian Care Nursing Care, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. The family will receive friends at 419 Sunrise Avenue.

Josie G. Lassiter
HENDERSON -- Josie Grissom Lassiter, age 99, a resident of 1791 N.C. Hwy. 39 South, died
Sunday in a local nursing home. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Baldy Henry and Sally Davis Grissom, and was the widow of Melville Gray Lassiter.
She was a charter member of Blessed Hope Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Blessed Hope Baptist Church by her pastor and grandson, the Rev. Donnie Perkinson, and the Rev. Jon Owens. Burial will follow in the Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ cemetery.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth L. Perkinson, Mrs. Virgie L. Faulkner, and Mrs. Josephine L. Langley all of Henderson; three sons, Eugene Lassiter, James Lassiter, and Melville Lassiter all of Henderson, one sister, Mrs. Idell G. Abbott of Henderson; 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Thomas Nick Langley and Ronald Lee Lassiter.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Perkinson, 1791 N.C. Highway 39 South.

HENDERSON -- C. Edward “Popsicle” May, age 87, a resident of 1027 S. William Street, died Sunday evening at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late Ernest and Rosa Winstead May. He was a retired Supervisor at the former
Carolina Bagging Co., and was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Men’s Bible Class.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Elmwood cemetery by the Rev. Charles M. Cook and the Rev. George Williams.
He is survived by one sister, Blenda M. Watkins of Henderson; two nieces, Marsha R. Watkins and Velvet M. Satterwhite; and one nephew, Scott Watkins and wife Shirley.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home on William Street.
Serving as honorary pall bearers will be members of the Men’s Bible Class of the First United Methodist Church.

Thomas H. Willcox, Jr.
August 20, 1925 -- December 17, 2000
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Thomas Hamlin Willcox Jr., 75, passed away peacefully at his home on December 17, 2000.
He was born in Norfolk to Thomas H. Willcox Sr. and Elizabeth Winslow Willcox.
He attended local primary schools and graduated from Episcopal High School. During his Navy service in WWII, he attended Harvard Business School and later earned an undergraduate and law degree from the University of Virginia. He became the 3rd generation of his family to enter the practice of law with a commitment to serve others.
He lived his commitments every day with tireless service to the law, dedication to his native city and a courageous passion for equal opportunity.
In 1994, Tom was named Norfolk’s First Citizen capping thirty years of quiet accomplishments in what the Virginia Pilot described as a “crucial but unsung leadership role.”
In the late 1950s when the state’s Massive Resistance stand closed Norfolk’s white high schools, Tom was among the prominent citizens who took a public stand for integration and re-opening of city schools.
In 1962, he was asked to lead Norfolk’s Citizens Advisory Committee on harmonizing race relations working in such areas as fair housing, equal access to building trades and funding for the Southside Boy’s Club
He served as the local United Way’s first Chairman of the Board having already streamlined the organization’s financial operations into a model adopted by other United Way groups.
At various times, Tom was director of the Greater Norfolk Corporation, the Tidewater Small Business Investment Corporation and the United Virginia Beach. He served as president of the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, the United Cerebral Palsy Association, the Norfolk Sertoma Club, and the Norfolk Yacht Club. He also served as a trustee of Norfolk Academy, Blue Ridge School, Virginia Wesleyan College, the Old Dominion University Research Foundation and the University of Virginia’s Alumni Board of Managers.
In the early 1970’s, Tom was instrumental in negotiations for Norfolk’s acquisition of the art collection of Walter Chrysler. He served as president of the Chrysler Board from 1983-1989, leading a successful fund drive for a 12 million dollar renovation that put the museum in the nation’s top 20.
His love for the city of Norfolk was rivaled only by his affection for time spent with family and friends at a vacation home in Nags Head known as “The Happy Shack.”
Tom was also an active member of Christ & St. Luke’s Church and devoted to his family. He gave his children every opportunity and only asked in return that they be honest and happy in life.
Tom’s memory is lovingly cherished by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth F. Willcox, and his three children, Ellen Willcox Ellis, Thomas Hamlin Willcox III and John Ferguson Willcox. He was loved his six grandchildren, Cary Ellis, Doug Ellis, Thomas H. Willcox IV, Matthew Willcox, Carter Willcox and Peyton Willcox, as well as his two sisters, Elizabeth Willcox Crawford and Katherine Willcox Kittrell.
Funeral services will be held at Christ & St. Luke’s Church in Norfolk on Thursday, December 21 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. James W.H. Sell and the Rev. Carlotta B. Cochran.
The Willcox family would like to express its deepest gratitude to the friends who comforted and cared for “Tommy” as he endured over 15 years with Parkinson’s disease.
They ask that memorial donations be made to either The Salvation Army or the Chrysler Museum in the name of Thomas Hamlin Willcox Jr.
