WARRENTON -- Walter Thomas Powell, 74, formerly of Warren County, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Washington Adventist Hospital in Maryland.
Arrangements will be announced by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Mae J. Williams

OXFORD -- Mae Jewel Williams, 70, of 6582 Old Roxboro Road died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Ernest and Novella Lawson Lyon.
She was a member of the Holy Temple C.O.G.I.C., where she served as superintendent of the Sunday school, was on the Mothers Board and was a member of the Celestial Choir.
Surviving are two daughters, Martha Palmer of Roxboro and Geraldine W. Jackson of Greensboro; five sons, Elbert C. Lyons and James A. Williams, both of Oxford, Ray D. Lyon of Roxboro, Anthony Williams of Durham and John W. Williams of Raleigh; two brothers, John Lyon of Oxford and Louis H. Lyon of Pottstown, Pa.; 12 sisters, Sadie Lyon, Emma Lyon, Shirley Ball, Doris McCray and Lonie Allen, all of Oxford, Frances Satterwhite, Josephine Green, Mae Brooks and Victoria Williams, all of Roxboro, Catherine Sconers of Hillside, N.J., and Ernestine Sconers and Christine Smith, both of Jersey City, N.J.; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Holy Temple C.O.G.I.C., officiated by Elder John Lyon. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Betts & Son Funeral Home in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Charlie R. Baptist

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Charlie Roosevelt Baptist, 69, of Arlington, formerly of Clarksville, Va., died Monday, March 26, 2001, at Arlington Hospital. He was a native of Chase City, Va., and the son of the late Jim and Margaret Dodson Baptist. He was the widower of Lucille Darden Baptist.
He was a member of St. John Baptist Church of Buffalo Junction, Va., and was retired from Shirley Construction Co. as a heavy equipment operator.
Surviving are three daughters, Julie M. London of Los Angeles, Ann Jones of Clinton, Md., and R. Nancy Baptist of Dale City, Va.; seven sons, Roy L. Darden of Atlanta, George L. Darden of Oxford, Charlie Darden Jr. of Skipwith, Va., Wilbert A. Darden of Burlington, Danny G. Baptist of Clarksville, Va., John L. Baptist of Bullock and Roscue Baptist of Germany; 26 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Baptist of Baltimore and Nannie Tunstall of Richmond, Va.; and one brother, Costella Baptist of Clarksville, Md.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at the chapel of C.H. Harris Funeral Home of Clarksville, Va., by the Rev. Earl Terry. Burial will follow in the St. John Baptist Church cemetery in Buffalo Junction.
The family received friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at 1658 Noblin Farm Road in Clarksville.
Arrangements are by C.H. Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Clarksville.

Julia B. Howell

OXFORD -- Julia Beal Howell, 76, of 500 Prospect Ave. died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late William and Mildred Tingen Beal. She was the widow of Elijah G. Howell Sr.
She was a member of Stovall Baptist Church and was retired from John Umstead Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. John Yount. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are three sons, Elijah G. Howell Jr. of Raleigh and J. Nelson Howell and David E. Howell, both of Oxford; and two sisters, Christine Compton and Louise B. Stone, both of Oxford.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Nelson and Peggy Howell, 107 Della St., Oxford.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home.

William C. King

WISE -- William Clayborn “Pete” King, 70, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at his home. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late John Westley King and Nora Paynter King. He was the widower of Annie Elizabeth Evans King.
He was a painter for many years, a U.S. Air Force veteran, and a member of Wise Baptist Church, Wise-Paschall Ruritan Club and the American Legion.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wise Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert L. Yates. Burial will follow at the Wise cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Theresa K. Bovard of Townsville, Nancy K. Walker of Fayetteville, Nora Jane Spain of Henderson and Julia Dean Hilliard of Lancaster, Pa.; one son, William A. King of Henderson; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be David Richardson, Weymss Harris, Danny Paynter, Gary Paynter, Freddie Paynter and Donnie Mulchi. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Wise-Paschall Ruritan Club.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Charles L. Maynard

BUTNER -- Charles Lynn Maynard, 48, of 503 W. F St., formerly of Sanford, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. He was a Lee County native and the son of Albert and Doris McManus Cox and the late Charles E. Maynard.
He graduated from Sanford Central High School in 1971, attended UNC-Charlotte and graduated from CCCC. While living in Sanford, he was a member of Steele Street United Methodist Church. He was a system application engineer with Nortel Networks in Research Triangle Park for 25 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Bob Baynard. Burial will be in Creedmoor cemetery.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Anna Brogden Maynard; a son, Charles David Maynard of the home; two sisters, Claudia Maynard Key and Anne Maynard Hurley, both of Sanford; and two brothers, A. Leslie Cox Jr. and William Alexander Cox, both of Sanford.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home.

Walter T. Powell

WARRENTON -- Walter Thomas Powell, 74, formerly of Warren County, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Washington Adventist Hospital in Maryland.

Surviving are five brothers, Eric Sr. of Norfolk, Va., Lewis Sr., Alvarez Sr. and Carlton Sr., all of Hyattsville, Md., and Bernette Sr. of Suitland, Md.; two daughters, Brenda Powell of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Linda Powell of Temple Hills, Md.; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Gladys Spruill of Washington, D.C., Sylvia Copeland of Buffalo, N.Y., and Eva Cox of Richmond, Va.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Denis J. Manning

HENDERSON -- Denis Jerome Manning, 38, of 827 Arrow St. died Friday, March 30, 2001, in New Orleans.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Arrangements will be announced by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.

Bradsher Moore

OXFORD -- Bradsher Moore, 67, of 9022 Cornwall Road died Friday, March 30, 2001, at his residence. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Clarence and Bessie Jones Moore.
He was the owner and operator of Moore’s General Store on Cornwall Road and a member of Mount Creek Baptist Church.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by Dr. Delos Miles and the Rev. Lemar Wheeler.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Lee Englebright Moore; one daughter, Shelia Moore Reese of Oxford; one son, Tim Moore of Stovall; one sister, Carolyn M. Sanford of Henderson; and four grandchildren.
The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3500 Westgate Drive, Suite 201, Durham, N.C. 27707, or Gran-ville County Relay for Life, P.O. Box 1602, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation for the family will be from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

Elizabeth G. Parrott

HENDERSON -- Elizabeth Greenway “Lib “ Parrott, 83, of 1770 U.S. 158 Bypass West died Friday, March 30, 2001, in a local nursing home. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Melvin Dorsey Greenway Sr. and Johnnie Bonds Greenway. She was the widow of Solomon Wilson Parrott.
She was a homemaker. She was a lifelong member of Poplar Creek Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and church librarian. She was a member of the Henderson Women of the Moose and the Brookston Bridge Club.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Poplar Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Cam Ford. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Parrott Clarke of Henderson; a sister, Juanita G. Guin of Henderson; a brother, M.D. Greenway Jr. of Henderson; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. Other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Amos Brewer, Chris Brewer, Sonny Parrott, James Nutt, David Parrott, Danny Guin, Phil Guin and Irvin Nutt Jr.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund or the Elizabeth Parrott Library Fund at Poplar Creek Baptist Church, 1371 Poplar Creek Road, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Robert L. Cooke

OXFORD -- Robert Lee “Bobby” Cooke, 62, of 305 Broad St. died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. He was a Granville County native and the son of Lillie Saunders Cooke and the late William R. Cooke.
He was a member of West Oxford Baptist Church and was employed by C-Mac Manufacturing.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. William Nelson. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Wood Cooke; a daughter, Kathy O’Brien of Oxford; two sons, Robert L. Cooke Jr. of Cary and Keith Cooke of Castalia; his mother, Lillie S. Cooke of Louisburg; two sisters, Rebecca C. Weaver of Franklinton and Margaret C. Jones of Henderson; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Joyce H. Crane

PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- Funeral services for Joyce Hicks Crane of 4100 Forrest Hills Drive were held Saturday, March 31, 2001, in Suffolk, Va. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Leonard Moody Hicks Sr. and Ella Rogers Hicks Faulkner.
Surviving are her husband, Richard M. Crane of Portsmouth; two brothers, James W. Hicks of Henderson and Clifton R. Hicks of Norlina; three sisters, Mattie H. Harris of Henderson, Dorothy H. Beck of Wise and Eloise H. Clark of Virginia Beach; five children; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Adrian Davis

WARRENTON -- Adrian Davis, 33, of Warrenton died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center.
Arrangements will be announced by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Suzanne E. Kanoy

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Suzanne E. Kanoy, 73, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
She was born July 26, 1927, in Greensboro, N.C., a daughter of the late Morris Leon and Pauline Tarleton Ellis. She was the widow of Karl Kent Kanoy.
Mrs. Kanoy was a homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro and Henderson, N.C.
Surviving are a son, Kent Kanoy and wife, Chris, of Carrboro, N.C.; a daughter, Caroline Celis and husband, Jose, of Queretaro, Mexico; a sister, Jean Potter of Asheboro, N.C.; three grandchildren, Polly Kanoy, Karl and Suzanne Celis.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home from 4:30 until 6 p.m.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Forest Lawn cemetery in Greensboro, N.C., directed by Hines-Lineberry Funeral Home.
Memorials can be made to Mercy Hospice of Horry County, P.O. Box 1409, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29578.

Elnor Davis-Kearney

HENDERSON -- Elnor Davis-Kearney, 57, of 534 Buffalo Creek Lane, Kittrell, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at her residence.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Clara M. Evans

Clara M. Evans of Brookside Gardens, N.J., died Saturday, March 31, at home.
She was born March 7, 1952, to Annie Hargrove Somerville and Clarence Evans Jr. She was a 1970 graduate of Henderson Institute. She was employed by Coastal Oil Co. for more than 20 years.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by grandfather Thomas “Pat” Hargrove of Henderson; a stepfather, James Somerville of Manson; a stepmother, Earnestine Evans of Linden, N.J.; sisters Beulah E. Bates, Jacqueline Evans, Carolyn Wilkins, Pam Wilkins, Theresa Wilkins and Marion Wilkins, all of Henderson, Talya Somerville, Shirley and Sharon Evans of New Jersey, Stacey Evans of South Carolina, and Barbara Fields of Boston; sister and brother-in-law Annie E. and Samuel Jones; brothers and sisters-in-law Clarence and Karen Evans and Melvin and Cherri Evans of Michigan; brothers Carlton Wilkins, Milton Wilkins and Anthony Wilkins, all of Henderson; aunts and uncles Rosa and Jonnie Williams of Henderson, Maggie and James Burton of New York, Rita and Robert Hargrove of Decatur, Ga., Hattie and Eddie Lewis of Kenansville, and Nora Lean and James Evans of New Jersey; aunts Louvenia Wimbush and Geneva Hawkins of Henderson and Sadie Milligan; uncles James Allen Hargrove of Henderson and Bailey Hargrove of New Jersey.
She also is survived by a very special, devoted and caring aunt, Dale Hargrove of New Jersey, who took care of Evans all through her illness.
Also surviving are a friend, Leon Guy of New Jersey, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral is set for 11 a.m. Thursday at Greater Mount Moriah in Linden, N.J. The Rev. Green will officiate at the service. Funeral services are being handled by Nesbitt Funeral Home.

Wallace C. Ezelle

HENDERSON -- Wallace Carlyle Ezelle, 81, of 1556 Lynne Ave. died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill. He was a native of Roanoke, Va., and the son of the late Carlyle Vincent and Alma Wallace Ezelle.
He was a retired railroad yard conductor, with 40 years of service with Seaboard Coastline Railroad. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Charles Cook. Burial will follow at 4:30 p.m. at Lake View cemetery in Victoria, Va.
Surviving are his wife, Neysa Fleming Ezelle; a daughter, Donna E. LeNeave of Vass; a son, Richard C. Ezelle of Martinsville, Va.; a sister, Catherine E. Hudson of South Hill, Va.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Active pallbearers will be Joe Briggs, Ted Bowen, Walter Ed Hight, John Falkner, Sam Jones, Charles W. Finch, James Finch and Harold Watkins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 114 Church St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Claudie Walters Fuller

HENDERSON -- Claudie Walters Fuller, 85, a resident of 1426 Reservoir St., died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at her home. She was a native of Granville County and was the daughter of the late Henry and Dora Kelley Walters. She was the widow of the late William Thomas Fuller.
She was retired from Harriet & Henderson Yarns. She was a member of the Harriett Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Senior Philathea Class, and was a past president and member of the WMU.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Harriett Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Chris Sorensen. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are one daughter, Mattie F. Riggan of Henderson; three sons, Wesley Fuller of Alert and Johnny Fuller and Newky Fuller, both of Henderson; 13 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Phil Jenkins, Billy Perry, Lawrence Hilliard, Jimmy Hedgepeth, Mike Clayton and Fred Vick.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 tonight at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
The J.M. White Funeral Home is in charge of services.
