Elsie T. Haugen

OXFORD -- Elsie Thomerson Haugen, 87, of 4045 Joe Hamme Road died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late D. Graham and Katie Saunders Thomerson.
She was a member of West Oxford Baptist Church and was retired from Farmer’s Exchange Supply Store in Durham with 25 years of service.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at West Oxford Baptist Church by Dr. Jim Whitehead. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Bernard “Ben” Haugen of the home; one sister, Lena Mae T. Austin of Durham; and two brothers, Frank Thomerson of Oxford and Sid Thomerson of Durham.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to West Oxford Baptist Church Building Fund, 101 Pine Tree Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation for the family was held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Percy Hawkins

MANSON -- Percy Hawkins, 47, of Manson died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at his residence.
Arrangements will be announced by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Edna P.B. Mitchell

CREEDMOOR -- Edna Pearl Blackley Mitchell, 84, of 891 Green Hill Road, Franklinton, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Jim and Lela Preddy Blackley. She was the widow of Eugene R. Mitchell.
She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and was a health care technician at Murdoch Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church by the Rev. Carl Hunter. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are a daughter, Deborah M. Podger of Franklinton; a son, Ronald D. Mitchell of Jesup, Ga.; a sister, Margaret Wright of Franklinton; a brother, O.L. Blackley of Franklinton; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

Brian L. Nance

HENDERSON -- Brian Lane Nance, 27, a resident of 5000 U.S. 15 South, Oxford, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, in Stuart, Va. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of Marvin Lane Nance of Henderson and Julia Glasscock Collins of Epsom. He was an employee of J.A. Reams Construction Co.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. William Wagnor. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving in addition to his parents are paternal grandmother Margaret Nance of Grassy Creek; maternal grandparents Willie Alfred and Ruth C. Glasscock of Oxford; one brother, Joseph Carlton Nance of Epsom; and one sister, Sherry Lynn Turner of Oxford.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Melvin Scott Nance, Melvin A. Nance, Chris Bibee, Roger Bibee, Chris Bailey, Chris Suchodolski, Jerry Cox and Chris Robinson.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Braxton and Julia Collins, 935 Weldon Road, Henderson.

Clifton M. Peoples Sr.

HENDERSON -- Clifton McDonald Peoples Sr. died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at his home. He was a native of Warren County and was the son of the late Solon McDonald and Maude Holmes Peoples.
He was a retired telephone and telegraph supervisor with the U.S. Air Force and a veteran of the Vietname War. He was a former employee of Roses Warehouse, and he attended Central Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by chaplain Ann Ritter. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens with military honors.
Surviving is his wife, Elsie Bailey Peoples; one daughter, Teresa P. Smith of Henderson; two sons, Joseph B. Peoples of Cary and Clifton McDonald Peoples Jr. of Charlotte; two sisters, Elizabeth P. Buckner of Warrenton and Julia Peoples of Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Dickie Taylor, Mo Casto, Horace Marshburn, Lin Mabry, Dr. Charles “Chuck” Burnham, J.H. Hamm and Cleveland Alston.
The family received friends Monday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Central Baptist Church Nursery Fund, or to Friends of Hospice, P.O. Box 2596, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Lillian S. Wilson

HENDERSON -- Lillian Sanford Wilson, 93, a resident of 606 S. Cooper Drive, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Eugene and Sallie Bett Overby Sanford. She was the widow of Carey Leroy Wilson. She was a housewife and a member of the Dexter Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Neil Woodlief and the Rev. Leon Gupton. Burial will be in the Harris Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Sallie Bett Wilson Dew of Spring Hope and Rose Wilson Wade of Knightdale; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jan Bryant, Larry Bryant, Randall Bryant, Derrick Lewis, Michael Wade and Morris Wilson.
The family will receive friends today from 1 until 1:45 at the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Mrs. Nancy ‘Nina’ Brown

CLARKSVILLE, Va. -- Mrs. Nancy “Nina” Brown, 85, resident of Eppes Forks, Va., died Sunday morning. Mrs. Brown was a devoted wife and loving mother. She is predeceased by a daughter, Faye Slaughter.
Surviving are her husband, Mac Brown; and one son, Ron Brown and wife, Vicky, of Durham; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Rock Spring Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Monday at the home.

Lawrence T. Bullock

HENDERSON -- Lawrence T. Bullock, 56, of 260 West Creek Road died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Guardian Care of Henderson. He was the son of the late Jeff Davis Bullock and Martha B. Bullock.
He was a former employee of the Vance County Board of Education.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Chapel by Minister Mark Joyner. Burial will be in Saints Delight Holy Church cemetery.
Surviving are two sisters, Lena Howard and Freddie Pearson, both of Henderson, and three brothers, Smith Howard Bullock of the Bronx, N.Y., and James Nelson Bullock and John Clifton Bullock, both of Henderson.
The family will receive visitors at the residence.
The body will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Langdon Butler

OXFORD -- Langdon Butler, 93, of 3186 Gela Road died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Granville Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held Saturday in Quincy, Fla.
Viewing was held Tuesday at the funeral home.
Local arrangements will be announced by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

George H. Clark

HENDERSON, N.C. -- George Holt Clark, 66, of 2331 Stewart Farm Road, Henderson, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at his home.
A native of Vance County, he was the son of the late Osby Clyde and Lucy Daniel Hicks Clark.
Mr. Clark was a member of Central Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a retired Shade Formulator with Burlington Industries Inc. Prior to his employment with Burlington Industries, he was a supervisor with Cristex Inc. in Oxford, where he was employed for nineteen years.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, at 2 p.m., at Central Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Alan W. McAlister. Entombment followed in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Daniel Clark; two daughters, Lyn Clark Wilson, and husband, Steve, and Paula Clark Fisher, and husband, Mike, all of Henderson; a son, Craig Holt Clark, and wife, Melinda, of Henderson; a granddaughter, Deanna Louise Clark of Henderson; four grandsons, Steve Ernie Wilson Jr., Matthew Bennett Fisher, Allen Michael Fisher and Trenton Otis Clark, all of Henderson; and two sisters, Inez C. Weaver of Henderson and Janie C. Aiken of Creedmoor, N.C. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marion C. Dickerson, and five brothers, Clyde C. Clark, Dolphus T. “Whitey” Clark, Willard B. Clark, Alton D. “A.D.” Clark and Julian R. Clark.
The family received friends Monday evening, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they were at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers were R.C. Daniel, Tom Stewart, Bud Wilson, Timmy Williams, Ron Sutton, Isaac Pegram, Eddie Allgood and John Allen. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Gene Newton, Gale Ramsey, Donald Pilson, Wallace Greenway, James Hicks and Chuck Elgin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church, P.O. Box 178, Henderson, N.C. 27536, or to Hospice, 1937 N.C. Hwy. 39 N., Louisburg, N.C. 27549.
Flowers Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Thurman Hargrove

WARRENTON -- Thurman Hargrove, 34, of Warrenton died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Arrangements will be announced by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Jackson G. Harris Jr.

STOVALL -- Jackson G. Harris Jr. of Grassy Creek Road, Stovall, died Monday, April 30, 2001. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jackson Greene Harris Sr. and Linda Wilson Harris, and his companion, Robert E. Burner Jr.
He served in the military during World War II and in postwar Japan. After his retirement, he was a faithful member of St. Stephen’s and St. Cyprian’s Episcopal churches of Oxford, serving on the vestry and on the outreach and bookstore committees.
Surviving are his brother, Russell Harris, and his sister, Nell Wilkinson of Richmond, Va.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. A reception for family and friends will follow.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Episcopal churches of Oxford or to the charity of one’s choice.

Hallye B. Heartwell

KITTRELL -- Hallye Brown Heartwell, 91, a former resident of 1780 Kittrell Road, died Tuesday in a local nursing home. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Thomas S. and Maggie Smith Brown. She was the widow of William Russell Heartwell and a member of the Plank Chapel United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. William “Bud” Budzinski. Burial will follow in the Plank Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Henry Brown, Marvin Daniel, Carlton Brown, Bill
Brown, Henry Finch, Joe Weaver and Tim Jenks.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Plank Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Darlene Ranes, 2120 S. Lynnbank Road, Kittrell, N.C. 27544, or to the Kittrell Baptist Church, c/o Winston W. Kerley, 1198 S. Chavis Road, Kittrell, N.C. 27544.

John P. Stevenson

HENDERSON -- John Perkins “Pike” Stevenson, 83, of 3931 Weldon’s Mill Road died Monday, April 30, 2001, at his home. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late John R. and Maggie West Stevenson. He was the widower of Ora Thomas Faulkner Stevenson.
He was a retired farmer and carpenter. He was a member of New Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at New Sandy Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Timothy J. Burgess and J. Marshall Neathery. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Grace Weaver Stevenson; a daughter, Dorothy S. Hedgepeth of Fayetteville; two sons, John T. Stevenson of Nashville and William P. “Bill” Stevenson of Henderson; three stepdaughters, Annie Mae Hoyle, Jean Abbott and Martha Pruitt, all of Henderson; two stepsons, Ray McDaniel and Bill McDaniel, both of Henderson; three sisters, Magnolia S. Abbott, Thelma S. Larimore and Carrie Lou S. Galantis, all of Henderson; a brother, Andrew D. Stevenson of Henderson; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Steve Hedgepeth, Mark Hedgepeth, John R. Stevenson, Leland Clayton, Donald Edwards, Kevin Stevenson, Charles Galantis, Jerry Stevenson and J.H. Smith.

Percy Hawkins

MANSON -- Percy Hawkins, 47, of Manson died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at his residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Refuge Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Warrenton. The Elder Robert Terry Jr., pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oak Level Church cemetery in Manson.
Surviving are his wife, Belinda White; one daughter, Stephanie Hawkins; two stepchildren, Nicole Lofland and David Lofland Jr.; three grandchildren; his mother, Rosa Hawkins; two sisters, Brenda Hawkins and Lisa Ruffin; and three brothers, Thurman, Charles and Samuel Hawkins.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Mattie S. Johnson

OXFORD -- Mattie Strong Johnson, 81, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at the Brantwood Nursing Center. She was the daughter of the late Ed Strong and Claudy Overby Strong.
She was a member of the New Johnathan Creek Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the Missionary Circle, Pastors Aide Club and Senior Choir.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Williams of East Orange, N.J., and Shirley Thorpe of Oxford; two sons, James R. Johnson and Jeffrey Johnson, both of Raleigh; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at New Johnathan Creek Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Robert E. Page. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 tonight at Betts & Son Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Richard A. Susewell Jr.

MANSON -- Richard Allen Susewell Jr., 77, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Abbeville, S.C., and the son of the late Richard Allen Susewell Sr. and Anna Alice Frazier Susewell. He was the widower of Nollie Susewell Jr.
He entered the U.S. Army on March 12, 1943, and saw battle at Normandy, which earned him the EAMET Theater Campaign Medal with a Bronze Service Star and a Victory Medal. After receiving an honorable discharge from the military Jan. 2, 1946, he moved to Inwood, N.Y., on Long Island. He and his family lived on Long Island for 50 years.
During his working years, he was employed as a presser in a dry-cleaning establishment. For the past 11 years, he resided in Manson with his wife, Nollie. For the past nine months, he was cared for in the McKissick Assisted Living Center in Soul City.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday in Brown’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton by pastor Shirley A. Johnson .
Surviving are two sons, Henry Susewell of North Babylon, N.Y., and Eric Susewell of the home; four daughters, Connie Milton of the home, Alice Susewell of Norlina, and Vanessa Alston and Gail Susewell, both of Manson; one brother, John Robert Susewell of Bayshore, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of Connie Milton in Manson.
The body will be on view Friday until 6 p.m. and will lie in state Saturday until the service.
Arrangements are by Brown’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.
