Susie W. Daniel

OXFORD -- Susie Wilson Daniel, 82, of 3115 Tar River Road died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Durham Regional Hospital. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and the daughter of the late Earl and Nellie Elliott Wilson.
She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Revs. Mark Tilley, Tommy Robertson and Daniel Tilley. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are four daughters, Carolyn D. Fuller of Clarksville, Christine D. Hicks of Henderson, and Nell D. Wallace and Brenda D. Brogden, both of Oxford; a son, Darious B. Daniel of Oxford; two sisters, Dorothy W. Short of Bullock and Edna N. Clifford of Oxford; three brothers, W.B. Newby of Lake City, S.C., and Harold Newby and Garland Newby, both of Bullock; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, T. Lynwood Daniel, and a son, Thomas Earl Daniel.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 2076 Sanders Road, Stem, N.C. 27581.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Brenda Brogden, 3114 Tar River Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home.

Curtis Gilliam

WARRENTON -- Curtis Gilliam, 68, of Warrenton died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Solid Rock Faith Ministries in Warrenton by Bishop Moore H. Bynum, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Luly Mae Jones Gilliam; two daughters, Adrienne Lewis and Diretha Daniels, both of New York; six grandchildren; five sisters, Helen G. Cherry of Windsor and Amaza M. Byrd, Gloria Williams, Diane Sutton and Nettie Hargrove, all of New York; three brothers, Tim Gilliam and Mike Gilliam, both of Windsor, and Frank Gilliam of New York.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton until being taken to the church one hour before the services.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Dolly Harwell

HENDERSON -- Dolly Jene Williams Harwell, 43, of 840 Lamb St. died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced by Garnes Funeral Services.

Blenda M. Watkins

HENDERSON -- Blenda May Watkins, 83, of 1027 William St. died Wednesday night, Feb. 27, 2002, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Ernest and Rosa Winstead May. She was a member of the First Congregational Christian Church.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. George Williams and the Rev. Sherrod Johnson. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Edgar Clifton Watkins of Henderson; one daughter, Marsha R. Watkins of Tampa, Fla.; and one son, Jon Scott Watkins of Wake Forest.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at her home, 1027 William St.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Christian Church, 427 Rowland St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Annie J. Williams

WARRENTON -- Annie Jones Williams, 79, formerly of Warren County, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at White Manor Nursing Home in Charlotte.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Baptist Church in Macon by the Rev. Alvin Cason, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, William and Joe; her stepchildren, Percy Jr., Mary, Laura, David and James; one brother, Cleveland; one sister, Molly; three grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Bonnie P. Evans

HENDERSON -- Bonnie Jane Parham Evans, 41, of 248 Orville St. died Saturday morning, March 9, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Robert Sterling and Bessie Lawson Parham.
She was employed for 13 years with Americal and was a former employee of American Home Star.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Alex Poindexter, the Rev. Ronnie Faircloth and the Rev. Leon Gupton. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by her husband, Jasper Evans Sr.; one daughter, Emily Michelle Evans of the home; one son, Jasper Evans Jr. of Greenville; three sisters, Deborah Boyd,
Mary Satterwhite and Patricia Norwood, all of Henderson; and three brothers, Robert Parham Jr., Timothy Parham and Charles Parham, all of Henderson.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Mildred Evans, 565 S. Cooper Drive.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Robert Parham Jr., Timothy Parham, Charles Parham, Tracey Satterwhite, Larry Evans and J.T. Patterson.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Katie L.A. Gregory

HENDERSON -- Katie Louise Arnold Gregory, 75, of 7706 U.S. 15 North in the Stovall community died Friday, March 8, 2002, at her residence. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late William and Lucinda Pettiford Arnold.
At an early age, she joined Stovall First Baptist Church, where she served on Pastor’s Aid and on the Usher Board for more than 50 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Stovall First Baptist Church by the Rev. Terry Taylor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence. The body will be on view Monday at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service of Henderson.

James E. Hawkins

HENDERSON -- James Earl Hawkins, 65, of the Townsville community died Friday, March 8, 2002, from an auto accident.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Arrangements will be announced by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Robert W. Payne

MACON -- Robert W. Payne died Saturday, March 9, 2002, in Raleigh.
Arrangements will be announced by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Robert M. Stegall

WARRENTON -- Robert M. Stegall, 78, of Route 1, Warrenton, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Community Memorial Healthcenter. He was the son of the late Herbert B. and Carrie Stevenson Stegall. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Harry V. Stegall.
He was a lifelong member of the Warren Plains United Methodist Church and served on various committees and was a trustee for many years. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a Mason in the Johnston Caswell Lodge in Warrenton. He also was a past member of the Warren County Cattlemen’s Association, worked with Bullock Oil Co. for many years and was a retired farmer.
Surviving are his wife, Dora Alice M. Stegall; two sons, Robert Myrick Stegall Sr. of Garner and Michael Herbert Stegall of the home; one grandson; and one brother, Ernest W. Stegall of Charlotte.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Warren Plains United Methodist Church by the Revs. Mark Clayton and Mike Freese. Burial with Masonic rites will follow in Greenwood cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Warren Plains United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Arrangements are being handled by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

O’Donald Terry

HENDERSON -- O’Donald Terry, 55, of Route 1, Clarksville, Va., died Friday, March 8, 2002, from an auto accident.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Nannie Manning, 1086 Townsville Landing Road.
Arrangements will be announced by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Lillie M. Warren

HENDERSON -- Lillie Mae Warren, 76, of 740 East Ave. died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center. She was a Vance County native and the widow of Matthew Warren Jr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wright Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Joseph L. Ratliff. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara W. Carroll of Henderson; two sisters, Lillian Fields and Mary Burton, both of Philadelphia; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive visitors at the residence of Barbara W. Carroll, 748 East Ave.
The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Arcelia H. Wood

HENDERSON -- Arcelia Hester Wood, 83, of Guardian Care of Henderson died Thursday, March 7, 2002. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Tom and Ada Hester.
She worked and retired from J.P. Taylor Tobacco Co.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph Ratliff. Burial will follow in the Elmwood cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Marie H. Evans, 72 Kings Road, off N.C. 39 North.
The body will be on view at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service until taken to the church one hour before the service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Canella B. Baity
HENDERSON -- Canella Jeanne Beckwith Baity, age 71, a resident of 815 Meadow Lane, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Maria Parham. She was a native of Durham and was the daughter of Ruby Pierce Beckwith of Henderson and the late Coy Andrew Beckwith. She was a graduate of Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, N.C.
A faithful member of the First Baptist Church, she was a member of the Ruth Gordon Sunday School Class and member of the choir. She was also a soloist, Adult Bell Ringer and recently a choir mother for the children’s choir. Being active in the community, she was a member of the Nosegay Garden Club, on the Board of Directors of the Henderson Community Concert Association, performed in several productions of the Henderson Parks and Recreation musicals, and was also in the former Junior Woman’s Club and in several revues.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church by Dr. Marion D. Lark.
Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, John Brewer Baity, of the home; two sons, John Brewer Baity Jr., and wife Lee Cawthorne Baity, of Nags Head and Coy Beckwith Baity, and wife Lindley Stroud Baity, of Youngsville; one sister, Faye B. Rose, and husband Thomas Benton Rose III, of Wrightsville Beach; three grandchildren, Amanda Baity, Jordan Baity and Ashlyn Baity; and four nephews, Thomas Benton Rose IV, Andrew Cameron Rose, and wife Vicki, David Paul Rose, and wife Janice, and Robert Pierce Rose, and wife Pam.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home on Meadow Lane.
Serving as active pallbearers will be George C. Allen, James G. Beck, Robert K. Catherwood, Dr. Ben F. Currin, David W. Edwards, John H. Falkner, Charles W. Finch, Dr. Donald H. Gwynn, S. Phillip Harris, William Blanton Hartness, Robert L. Hubbard Sr., Robert G. Kilgore, William H. Mast, Dr. Richard J. Noel, Glenn W. Powers, Walter J. Rublein, Dr. Gilbert F. Sellars and Felix C. Simmons.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Hospice, P.O. Box 2596, Henderson, N.C. 27536, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Alma C. Robinson

HENDERSON -- Alma C. Robinson of 225 Truman Ave. died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at her residence.

OXFORD -- Alex Santana, infant son of Alejandro and Teresa Arenas Santana, died Monday, March 12, 2002, at Granville Medical Center.
Arrangements will be announced by J.M. White Funeral Home.

Jennie B. Small

OXFORD -- Jennie Bullock Small, 78, of 304 Hicks Mill Road died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Granville Medical Center.
She was the widow of James Small Jr.
She was a member of Tally Ho Baptist Church and a member of Queen Esther Chapter No. 536, Order of Eastern Star.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tally Ho Baptist Church by the Rev. Moses Fletcher. Burial will follow in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving is one daughter, Brenda Henry of Oxford.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.

William A. Benson Jr.
WARRENTON -- William Alexander Benson Jr., 81, of Warrenton died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Warren Hills Nursing Center. He was the son of the late William A. Benson Sr. and Elizabeth Cheek Benson.
He served in the Coast Guard during World War II. He was a faithful member of the Warrenton Baptist Church and a barber in Warrenton for 50 years. He was a Mason and a member of the Shriners.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Warrenton Baptist Church by the Rev. David Brooks. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Smith Benson.
Surviving are one son, William A. “Billy” Benson of Plymouth; one daughter, Barbara Benson Williamson of Gilbert, S.C.; one brother, Robert “Bob” Benson of Augusta, Ga.; two sisters, Francis Aycock and Patsy Choplin, both of Warrenton; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Charlie Fitts

WARRENTON -- The Rev. Charlie “Ray” Fitts, 77, of Boyd’s Rest Home in Macon died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at R.H. Greene Funeral Home Chapel in Warrenton by the Rev. Lawrence Harrison. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Macon.
Surviving are one sister, Rosebud Fitts of Norristown, Pa.; and three brothers, Roger and Sheppard Fitts, both of Norristown, and Eddie B. Fitts of Macon.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Laura Henderson

HENDERSON -- Laura Henderson, 74, of 655 Haywood Wright Road died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital.
The family will receive visitors at 271 S. Beckford Drive, Hillcrest Apartment No. J34.

Alma C. Robinson

HENDERSON -- Alma Chavis Robinson, 55, of 225 Truman Ave. died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late McKinley Chavis Sr. and Isabelle Ridley Chavis.
She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph L. Ratliff. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Gwendolyn C. Scott of Raleigh and Willia Lavern Robinson of Cary; her mother, Isabelle Chavis of the home; two sisters, Josephine Richards and Constello Chavis, both of Henderson; four brothers, McKinley Chavis Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., William Chavis Sr. of Wrightsville, Ga., and Constant Chavis and Ervin Chavis, both of Henderson; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.
