Robert Eugene Alexander

LANDIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Robert Eugene Alexander, 74, 511 W. Ridge Ave., who died Wednesday (July 28, 1999) at Big Elm Nursing Center, Kannapolis, after a period of declining health.

Born Nov. 18, 1924, in Landis, Mr. Alexander was a son of the late John U. and Fannie Kirk Alexander. A graduate of Landis High School, he had retired as a purchasing agent at Dominion Yarn. He was a former alderman and town clerk for Landis. A member and elder at First Reformed Church, he was a Scout leader and a volunteer fireman.He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include wife Willa Juanita Weaver Alexander; son Robert Eugene Alexander Jr., Morganton; daughter Susan A. Linn, Bridgewater, Va.; sisters Vertie Lipe, Della Alexander and Margaret Hoke, all of Landis, and Mary Corriher, China Grove; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, First Reformed Church, conducted by the Rev. David P. Franks. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis.

Memorials: First Reformed Church, 212 N. Central Ave., Landis, N.C. 28088.

Rebecca Ellis Weant

Rebecca Ellis Weant, 81, Salisbury, died Wednesday (July 28, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a year of declining health and five days of serious illness.

Born July 28, 1918, in Salisbury, Mrs. Weant was a daughter of the late William Walter and Agnes Pugh Weant. She was a graduate of Boyden High School, Guilford College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received a master of library science degree from the University of Michigan.

Mrs. Weant traveled with the U.S. government in library work with the occupation troops in 1946. She also worked at Enoch Pratt Library, Baltimore, and the Greensboro City Library.

Librarian at Rowan Public Library for 17 years, she volunteered there after her retirement. She also assisted with setting up the library at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member. She was a member of the Daisy Hedrick Sunday School Class.

Survivors include brothers W.W. “Bill” Weant Jr., Granite Quarry, and Robert A. Weant, Salisbury.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Friday, First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas L. Griffis. Private burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: At the church after Friday’s memorial service.

Morgan Samuel Ward Jr.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Morgan Samuel Ward Jr., Summerville, died Wednesday (July 28, 1999) at a Charleston nursing home.

Born Aug. 22, 1919, in Woodleaf, N.C., Mr. Ward was a son of the late Morgan S. and Beulah Sain Ward. A graduate of the University of North Carolina, he served in the U. S. Marine Corps during World War II. Retired as a planner/estimator for Charleston Naval Shipyard, he was a member of the Pipefitters Union and the Oddfellows Union. He was a Methodist.

Survivors include wife Marie Boles Ward; sons Morgan S. War III, Marion, and Joseph W. Ward, Bonneau Beach; daughters Barbara Brady, Linda Torgerson and Betty Hanson, all of Charleston; brothers Robert M. Ward, Durham, N.C., Dan Ward, Marietta, Ga., Denton Ward, Homer, Ga., and William “Bill” Ward, Salisbury; sister Eunice Mae Weldon, Wilmore, Ky.; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. today, Parks Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, 2 p.m. Saturday, Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Mocksville, N.C.

Louise Lowder Hathcock

NEW LONDON – Louise Lower Morris Hathcock, 76, 34926 Locust Lane, died Thursday (July 29, 1999) at Forrest Oaks Healthcare Center, Albemarle.

Born Oct. 11, 1922, in Stanly County, Mrs. Hathcock was a daughter of the late W.S. “Cap” and Esther Mabry Lowder. A member of North Albemarle Baptist Church, she had retired from Wiscassett Mill Co.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Thomas Morris, and her second husband, Grady L. Hathcock.

Survivors include son James Thomas Morris Jr., Richfield; daughter Brenda M. Pence, New London; stepdaughter Evelyn H. Hall, Greenville, S.C.; sisters Annie Tyson, Ansonville, and Nancy Thompson, Norwood; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, North Albemarle Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Wyman Bolin. The body will be placed in the church at 9:30. Burial, Norwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home, Albemarle.

Memorials: Alzheimer’s Association, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, N.C. 28215.

Earl Raymond Fink

Earl Raymond Fink, 75, 108 Stoneybrook Road, died Thursday (July 29, 1999) at The Laurels of Salisbury.

Born Jan. 2, 1924, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Fink was a son of the late Oscar and Maude Bentley Fink. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he also served in the National Guard for 20 years. Retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 4, spinning room, he attended Beulah Land Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughter Mrs. Bobby (Virginia) D. Watson, Salisbury; sons James Ray Fink, Kannapolis, and Raymond Lee Fink, Concord; brother Don Fink, Kannapolis; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Don Crusenberry. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Michael Alvin Grell

MOORESVILLE — Michael Alvin Grell, 56, East Center Avenue, died Wednesday (July 28, 1999) at his home.

Born Jan. 29, 1943, in Rockford, Ill., Mr. Grell was a son of Nina Meinders Grell Tesmer, Colby, Wisc., and the late Robert JohnGrell. He was a 1969 graduate of Marquette University and the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center Nursing School in Wisconsin. Employed by Lake Norman Regional Medical Center for 12 years, he was a nurse specialist in endoscopy.

He was a member of the Society of Gastroenterologic Nursing Associates and St. Therese Catholic Church. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in the Hospital Corps.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Gerianne West Grell, whom he married Aug. 31, 1974; son Robert W. Grell, Mooresville; daughter Michelle Nicole Grell, Mooresville; stepbrother John Tesmer, Colorado; sister Pat Untiedt, Colby, Wisc.; and stepsisters Jean Dahlin, North Dakota, and Joyce Buscher, Montana.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Therese Catholic Church, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. William J. Lynch, S.J. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Cavin Funeral Home.

Virginia S. Aycoth

KANNAPOLIS — Virginia Sweatt Aycoth, 75, formerly of Vance Street, died Thursday (July 29, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after three weeks of serious illness.

Born Nov. 15, 1923, in Marlboro County, S.C., Mrs. Aycoth was a daughter of the late Eugene Floyd and Janie Sweatt Sweatt. A member of Midway United Methodist Church, she had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 4.

Her husband, Colie Aycoth, died March 3, 1998.

Survivors include daughter Janice Whitaker, Byron, Ga.; sisters Lillian Biles, Charlotte, Irene Mullis, Kannapolis, and Ella Mae Sikes, Florence, S.C.; brothers Leon and Gene Sweatt, both of Kannapolis; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Billy Rintz. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of grandson Patrick Wike, 1236 Rural Drive, Concord.

Memorials: Midway United Methodist Church, 708 S. Main St., Kannapolis, N.C. 28081.

Harold Connell

LANDIS — Harold Howard Connell, 75, Landis, died Thursday (July 29, 1999) at his home.

Born July 26, 1924, in Union County, Mr. Connell was a son of the late Ben and Mattie Cuthbertson Connell. Employed by Wackenhut Security, he had retired from Fieldcrest-Cannon and Cone Mills. He was a member of West Point Baptist Church, Kannapolis.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Othelia Barnhardt Connell; son James Connell; foster daughters Nadine Holshouser and Vickey Page; brother Clifford Connell; two grandchildren; and three foster grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Mark Harrell and the Rev. Rick Miller. Burial, Greenlawn Cemetery, China Grove.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home in Landis.

Paul ‘Dag’ Dagenhart

LEXINGTON - Paul Wayne “Dag” Dagenhart, 52, 983 Koontz Road, died Thursday (July 29, 1999) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born May 17, 1947, in Davidson County, Mr. Dagenhart was the son of the late Faye C. Moody and Paul Shifford Dagenhart. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

A U.S. Air Force veteran, he served as an air traffic controller during the Vietname War. Mr. Dagenhart was a member of American Legion Post 8 and VFW Post 3074.

He worked part-time at Lexington State Bank after retiring from the Lexington Police Department.

Survivors include wife Vicki H. Dagenhart; son Billy Dagenhart, Lexington; and sister Jan Victoria Dagenhart Robbins, Lexington.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Timberlake Chapel at Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. John Taylor.

Visitation:7-9 p.m. Sunday, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Memorials: Hospice of Davidson County, P.O. Box 1941, Lexington, 27293.
