SHELBY — Mrs. Verlee Vernishamae Roberts Mask, 72, of 2338 Hoey Church Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. She was a daughter of the late Ben and Nellie Aldrich and retired from the city of Kings Mountain Recreation Department, after 27 years of service. She managed Davidson Swimming Pool and worked in many other capacities at the Kings Mountain Community Center. She was a member of Bynum Chapel AME Zion Church, where she served on the steward, ushers and missionary boards. She was a member of Adah Chapter No. 7 Order of the Eastern Star, lifetime member of the NAACP, Emma V. Kelly Temple No. 748, Daughters of the I.B.P.O.E. of W. Shelby. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in the death by her son, Curtis Lee Roberts; two brothers, John and Louise Aldrich; and one sister, Precola Evert. She is survived by her husband, Gaither Mask of the home; two daughters, Brenda Aldrich Osborne and husband, Terry, and Sandra Aldrich Alston; god-daughter, Debra Crocker and husband, Archie; brothers, Henry and Sue, Bowman and Joan, Bill, all of Philadelphia, Wilber Mack and Albert of Gastonia, Wilard Joe and Dottie of Teaneck, N.J., B.R. Aldrich of Salisbury; and five grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 7 p.m. at Bynum Chapel AME Zion Church in Kings Mountain. Burial will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. J.W. Gill & Sons Funeral home, Kings Mountain, is in charge of arrangements.

Lois Downey
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Lois Newton Downey, 80, of South Broadway Street, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. David Hughes Hobson and Frieda Hobson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Padgett and King Mortuary and at other times at the home a daughter, Linda D. Walker, 265 Georgia Ave., Forest City.

‘Fred’ Sabey
SHELBY — Mr. Frederick “Fred” Field Sabey, 81, of Tryon Estates of Columbus, formerly of Shelby, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital in Rutherford-ton. Born in Rochester, N.Y, he was a son of the late Harold Meyer and Marcia Elizabeth Jones Sabey. He served in the Army during World War II as a first lieutenant. He retired from Cleveland Regional Medical Center as a mechanical engineer. He was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church in Shelby and former Board Member Life Enrichment Center. He was a graduate of University of Rochester, with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering and member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Hope Sabey; a brother, James Sabey; and a sister, Charlotte Greenwood. He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Henderson and husband, Graham, of Atlanta, and Anne Sabey of Decatur, Ga.; five grandchildren, Brian Hill, Anna Koetter, Alicia Jackson, Mary Henderson and Robert Eason; and five great-grandchildren, Jack Eason, Charles Eason, Emma Grace Koetter, Sarah Hill and William Jackson. A memorial service will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at John Knox Presbyterian Church in Shelby with the Rev. William Troutman officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Life Enrichment Center, 1270 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC 28150. Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Archie
SHELBY — Mrs. Ruby N. Archie, 60, of 240 W. Grove St., Apartment 8, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2002, at her home. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Dora and Larry Robbs, 1215 White Ave., Shelby. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Genesis Funeral Service and Chapel.

LINCOLNTON — Mr. Alfred “A.C.” Cobb Sr., 62, of 1004 E. Pine St., died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at his home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ebony & White’s Funeral Service.

‘Maw’ Brackett
SHELBY — Mrs. Lois Brooks “Maw” Brackett, 94, of 2915 Poplar Circle, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 31, 1907, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Joe Brooks and Omie Pope Brooks. She retired from Belmont Mill and was a homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, V.C. “Nick” Brackett; and a son, Fay Brackett. She is survived by a son and two daughters-in-law, Bobby Gene and Faye Brackett of Salisbury and Louise Brackett of Shelby; five grandchildren and their spouses, Keith and Linda Brackett and Linda Rivers, all of Shelby, Gary Brackett and Charlie Brackett, both of Salisbury and Pam and Ron Williams of Wade; six great-grandchildren, Jeremy Brackett of Matthews, Gary Cooper, Robbie Cooper and Donnie Cooper, all of Shelby, Tracy Lanier of Kings Mountain and Ashley Bennett of Wade; six great-great-grandchildren, Christopher and Randy Cooper, Brad Cooper, Justin Cooper, Stephanie Champion, Anthony Pruitt, all of Shelby; and one great-great-great-grandchild, Sydney Champion of Shelby. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church with the Revs. Terry Cagle and Bryan Glisson officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Life Enrichment Center, 1270 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC 28150; or to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

‘Hub’ Sanders
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Mr. Herbert “Hub” Wesley Sanders, 89, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Moosehaven Nursing Home in Jacksonville. Born in Rock Hill, S.C., he was a son of the late Wiley Pinkney and Beulah Chandler Sanders. He lived in Shelby for 75 years of his life. He is affectionately remembered for his friendliness, sense of humor and full enjoyment of life. He retired from Yelton Milling Co., where he was a salesman. He attended New Hope Baptist Church and was a member of the Wagon Wheelers Square Dancing Club and the Shelby Moose Lodge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Warlick Sanders; two brothers, Wiley and Gus Sanders; and two sisters, Mable Queen and Bonnie Cross. He is survived by a daughter, Joyce Sanders Payne of Jacksonville; twins, Gail Sanders Walrath of Jacksonville and Gary Herbert Sanders of Shelby; a brother, Curtis Sanders of Spartanburg, S.C.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Cleveland Funeral Services with the Rev. David Gordon officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Arthur
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Elizabeth Groome Arthur, 98, of 210 Edgemont Drive, Kings Mountain, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital in Kings Mountain. She was born in Guilford County, to the late Marvin and Lela Whittington Groome. She was wife of the late James Henrie Arthur. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Groome and Edwin Groome; and three sisters, Erma Knight, Jean Williams and Melba Baggett. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain. She was active in the Women’s Club, Bridge Club, and the Thursday Afternoon Book Club. She was noted for her award-winning needle work and rose gardening. She was active in politics, a “staunch” Democrat and was the registrar for the West Kings Mountain Precinct for many years. She was a dedicated Braves fan and a homemaker. She is survived by four daughters, Marion A. Thomasson and husband, George B. Thomasson, of Kings Mountain, Jean A. Harris and husband, the late John O. Harris Jr., of Pasadena, Texas, Shirley A. Kinneman and husband, Dr. Robert Kinneman, of Culpeper, Va., and Peggy A. Miller and husband, Winston D. Miller, of Burlington; two close companions, Helen Owens and Joan Carroll; seven grandchildren, Dr. Art Miller and wife, Dr. Aileen Miller, of Burlington, David Miller and wife, Ann, of New Bern, John O. Harris III and wife, Ashley, of Kings Mountain, Elizabeth W. Harris of Houston, Texas, Ann Parker and husband, Paul, of Marietta, Ga., Carol Kinneman of Hollywood, Fla., and Robert Kinneman of Charleston, S.C.; and eight great-grandchildren, Jeff Miller, Ryan Miller, Elizabeth Parker, George Parker, John O. Harris IV, Abbie Harris, Layla Harris and Olivia Miller. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Janice Combs officiating. A graveside service will be in Groometown United Methodist Church Cemetery in Groometown at 4 p.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Christian Activity Center at the church. Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 37, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. Harris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Belinda Spencer
HAMPTON, Va. — Mrs. Belinda Degree Spencer, 53, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at the Centurion Hampton General Hospital. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Fountain of Love Pentecostal Church at 2619 Shell Road in Hampton. The family will receive friends at the home of the brother, Steve Degree at 417 Murdock Circle in Shelby. Genesis Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Rinehart
RUTHERFORDTON — The Rev. Joseph Paul Rinehart, 50, of 910 Old Stonecutter Road, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Rufus Smith. The body will be placed at Crowe’s Funeral Home today from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Forest City. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Mill Creek Church of the Brethren, Building Fund, 1401 Cox Road, Tryon, NC 28782.

Bonnie Godwin
SHELBY — Mrs. Bonnie Hardy Godwin, 22, of 1104 S. Washington St., Apartment B, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. A graveside service was Tuesday in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery. Cleveland Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Roscoe Dobbins
FOREST CITY — Mr. Roscoe Lewis Dobbins, 90, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital, Rutherfordton. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Padgett and King Mortuary with the Rev. Frank Hoyle officiating. Burial will be in Concord Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Euzelia Wood
MOORESBORO — Miss Euzelia Wood, 97, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital, Rutherfordton. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

FOREST CITY — Mr. Lonnie Martin Sr., 72, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be today at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home. ‘Bob’ Brown
CLEARWATER, Fla. — Mr. Robert “Bob” Brown, 46, of 21 N. Evergreen Ave., died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at his home. Born Sept. 2, 1955, in Fort Eustis, Va., he was employed by Target stores as a stockman. He was of Baptist faith and served in the Navy. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Elaine Shull Brown; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Shull of Shelby and Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Brown of Inman, S.C. He is survived by his father, Ballard C. Brown and stepmother, Faye Brown of Spartanburg, S.C.; two brothers, Scott Brown of Hampton, Va., and Doug Stevens of Stafford, Va., a twin sister, Roberta Hirneise of Gainesville, Fla., a sister, Susan Brown of Inman, S.C.; one nephew; and four nieces. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. before the service at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

IRON STATION — Mr. Charles “Slim” Dennis Whisnant, 64, of 223 McMillian Heights Road, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. David Jones officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mrs. Leona Owens Thompson, 85, of 305 Hickory St., died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born in Gastonia, she was a daughter of the late Ben Owens and Martha Pruitt Owens. She was a homemaker and member of the Salvation Army Church. She is survived by three daughters, Martha Thompson of the home, Mary Gault of Gaffney and Ann Pearson of Gastonia; two sons, Boyce Thompson Jr. and Jimmy Lee Thompson, both of Mount Holly; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney. Pallbearers are Mike Gault, Bryan Thompson, Kevin Pearson, Mike Pearson, Eddie Bostic, Arthur Frady and Raymond Thompson. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Eva Mae Cobb Goforth, resident of White Oak Manor, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at home. Born in Oconee County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late John Keels and Estelle Posey Cobb, and the widow of Plato C. Goforth. She retired from Sullivan Southern Manufacturing Company in York, S.C. She is survived by a daughter, Pat Witherspoon and husband, Philip, of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Delmas Cobb of Greensboro and John Cobb of Jamestown; three sisters, Virginia Sneed of Greensboro, Mahrier Smith and husband, Ray, of Kings Mountain and Edith Puckett of Gastonia; three grandchildren, Wanda W. Whetstine and husband, Darrell, Charles Witherspoon and wife, Lynn, and Rick Witherspoon and wife, Pinkie, all of Kings Mountain; and great-grandchildren, Charlie, John and Ashley Witherspoon, Christy and Chad Whetstine. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Mountain Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. John Sloan and Rev. Morris Jordan officiating. FOREST CITY — Mr. Charlie Guy Walker, 93, of 117 Parmer St., died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Florence Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Gantt and the Rev. Kevin Rohm officiating. Burial will be in Cool Springs Cemetery. ELLENBORO — Mr. Leabron Stephen McMurry, 60, of 203 Webb Road, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at his home. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Grays Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with speaker Steven Rhodes. Crowe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
